Beyond the well-trodden paths lie hidden places brimming with history, natural beauty, and cultural intrigue. These off-the-beaten-path destinations offer a chance to explore Sri Lanka in a more intimate and authentic way. From the historic ruins on Delft Island, where wild horses roam amidst Dutch colonial remnants, to Lipton's Seat in the misty highlands, offering panoramic tea plantation vistas, each hidden spot tells a unique story.
Tumblr media
The Nine Arches Bridge near Ella captivates with its old-world charm and scenic surroundings, while Polonnaruwa's lesser-known temples reveal intricate carvings and ancient Buddhist art away from the crowds. Mannar Island, off Sri Lanka's north-western coast, offers pristine beaches and a peaceful escape, while nearby Adam's Bridge sparks curiosity with its mythical connections. These hidden gems not only showcase Sri Lanka's diverse landscapes and rich heritage but also promise unforgettable experiences for travelers seeking exploration beyond the ordinary. Discovering these secret places reveals a side of Sri Lanka that goes beyond the guidebooks, inviting visitors to delve into its hidden wonders and lesser-known narratives.
Here are some secret and hidden places in Sri Lanka.
1. Delft Island:
Tumblr media
Delft Island, off the northern coast of Jaffna, is a peaceful haven renowned for its historical significance and rustic charm. This little island, which is reachable by ferry, is peppered with historic remains, including relics of Dutch colonial architecture and a distinctive Baobab tree. Wander or ride a bicycle around the island to see the free-roaming wild horses and take in the peaceful ambiance.
2. The seat of Lipton:
Tumblr media
Lipton's Seat, which is well worth the trip, is a stunning panoramic viewpoint in the central Highlands, close to Haputale. This viewpoint, named for the Scottish tea mogul Sir Thomas Lipton, who used to enjoy the view, offers a panorama of verdant tea plantations that tumble down into valleys below. Photographers and lovers of the outdoors frequent this location because of the enchanting atmosphere the early morning mist and dawn produce.
3. The Bridge with Nine Arches:
Concealed amidst the verdant surroundings close to Ella, the Nine Arches Bridge is a remarkable architectural feat constructed during the British colonial period. This bridge, which spans a ravine and is encircled by tea plantations, is best seen from a distance or up close while taking a scenic train trip. Hikers can travel through tea estates to viewpoints with breathtaking views of the bridge and the scenic surrounding area.
4. The Secret Temples of Polonnaruwa:
Tumblr media
Despite being a well-known ancient city, Polonnaruwa has undiscovered temples and ruins. These lesser-known temples, such as the Lankatilaka and Tivanka Image House, are located away from the main archaeological sites and feature magnificent Buddha statues in serene environments along with elaborate sculptures. Discovering these undiscovered treasures offers a more profound understanding of Sri Lanka's abundant cultural legacy away from the masses.
5. Adam's Bridge and Mannar Island:
Tumblr media
Mannar Island, a less-travelled destination in northwest Sri Lanka, is renowned for its immaculate beaches, varied birds, and cultural legacy. Some people think that the neighbouring Adam's Bridge, a series of limestone shoals, is the remains of a bridge that Lord Rama constructed in the Hindu epic Ramayana. For individuals who appreciate the natural world and old Sri Lankan mythology, this place provides a serene haven.

As we all know, several mythological places associated with Lord Ram are in Sri Lanka. IRCTC's Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra tour package covers destinations like temples of the ancient time including Munneshwari, Munnawaram, Hanuman Temple, Koneshwaram Temple, Ashok Vatika, and many more. This Ramayana tour package Ex-Delhi is all-inclusive and affordable for the duration of 06 Nights - 07 Days.  Below mentioned are some sites included in the Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra package and their significance associated with Ramayana;Koneswaram temple  – The Temple of the Thousand Pillars and Dakshina-Then Kailasam is a classical-medieval Hindu temple located high above the bay. The temple is one of the "Pancha Ishwarams" (Abode of Shiva) The Hakgala Botanical Garden (Ashok Vatika): When Ravana abducted Sita, he kept her at this place, insisting that she marry him. It was here where Hanuman brought her lord Rama’s ring with the news that he was looking for her. He offered to take her back, but she denied saying it would be an insult to Rama’s honour if he did so. Seetha Amman Temple, Seetha Eliya: The stream that runs from the hill catered to the day-to-day needs of Sita during her exile at Ashoka Vatika. She used to take a bath in this stream. Now there is also a temple of Rama Parivar by the side of this stream. It is interesting to note that footprints akin to Lord Hanumans are found by this river -some small and some large. Divurmpola: When Rama killed Ravana and liberated Sita, many people questioned her purity, and this is where she gave Agni Pariksha- a test to prove her chastity by offering herself to the fire. However, she came unscathed and proved her holiness during this ritual at this place.Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, Ramboda: Hanuman was searching for Sita on these hills of Ramboda, therefore the Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka built this temple with Hanuman as the main deity. Special Poojas are conducted on every full moon. Gayathri Pedam:- This is where Meghnath, Ravana’s son, propitiated Lord Shiva with penance and poojas and was granted extraordinary powers by lord Shiva. Kelaniya Temple:- After King Ravana’s death, Ravana’s brother Vibhishana was coroneted as the king of Lanka by Lakshmana at Kelaniya. Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple:- This is the temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and the only temple in the world to have a chariot of Anjaneyar. Muneswaram Temple is the first temple for Shiva (Munnu + Eshwaran). A Shiva lingam was already built here when lord Rama visited the place. So it is believed that this temple was here even before the Ramayana, this means a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was already existing here before Rama’s penance.Manavari Temple: Manavari is the first lingam installed and prayed to by Lord Rama, also called Ramalinga Shivan. Rama installed his 1st lingam for Shiva at Manavari, about 5 km from Munneswaram, near the banks of Deduru Oya. The lingams followed this at Thiru Koneshwaram in Trincomalee, Thiru Ketheeshwaram near Mannar, and Rameshwaram in India. These Tamil Ishwaram temples are traditional places of Shiva worship but are also dedicated to Vishnu’s Avatar, Lord Rama.
