This is the Cuddle Cactus Cowl. The 3D texture of this project is created using a technique called stacked stitches.

Most of my patterns with this technique focus on striped color work, but this this project uses the increase and decrease technique to create a three-dimensional surface texture.

Day 7 of recreating my old photos, how did I do today?

2+ years of hormone replacement therapy changes your physical abilities. Although I've gotten a lot stronger, even without exercise, I've lost a lot of my flexibility. It was very hard to hit this pose and recreate the photo because my arms don't bend that way anymore.

The project shown here is the Eccentricity Shawl 9n Ravelry. This shawl was designed as a gentle introduction to the stacked stitch technique. Panels of short row lace give the piece its asymmetrical look and name. This pattern is well suited for adventurous knitters who are comfortable knitting shawls, but have never tried the stacked stitch technique before. Instructions for pattern modifications and yarn substitution are included in this pattern.

The Winter Wave Hat was a spontaneous project inspired by the arrival of a new family member. I used two 100g skeins of bulky weight yarn in contrasting colors. This project features a simple stacked stitch motif worked in 2 colors in the round. Stacked stitches are a increase and decrease technique used to create wavy color work. Only one color is worked at a time in this project. It's a good starting place for any one new to this technique who wants to practice with a quick and (relatively) easy pattern.

I know it's a strange time of year to publish a hat, but it's still cold enough to wear this today when I arrive in Wisconsin. It's also perfect timing for those of you who live in the southern hemisphere.

Yarn: BULKY

Small size uses 60g of MC and 30g of CC.

Large size uses 67.5g of CC and 37.5g of CC.

Finished Size: 18" (20") / 46 (51 cm) circumferenceat ribbing, unstretched, to fit 20-23" (23-26") / 53-60 (61-66) cm head.

Needles: Size 8 (5mm), 10 (6mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 14 sts and 19 rows = 4 x 4” square in stockinette stitch on larger size needles.

Colors are hard, but you can always try them out with crayons.

I don't always have an easy time picking colors. This project was a bit of an internal struggle to find the right combination and rhythmic pattern of stripes. As you can see below I acted the struggle out in the photo shoot.

When I sell a pattern, I like to offer my customers a chance to color in their own version and try out their yarn choices on paper. It's only fair that if they're investing in something, and I don't just mean $6, I mean investing time and energy, that they get to see a preview of what their project might look like.

Then, of course, I like to use Photoshop to see what color combinations I've missed.

Color theory is a complex area of study. But when it comes to knitting swatching is your friend, coloring sheets will help you find your way, and the friendly people at your local yarn store can always help.

There is no right answer to color, it is a personal choice and nobody can tell you what you like.
