A.S Roma 3 Genoa 1FT
Tumblr media
Following a tough loss to Juventus last weekend in a 2-0 victory over Parma in the Copa Italia as Roma advance to the quarterfinals Roma would get right back on track with a opportunistic chance to pick up a massive three points before the Derby next weekend. Roma have arrived at the beginning of the schedule again as they went on the road to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to face relegation-threatened Genoa for the second time this season. These teams played it back on matchday 1 in what was a wild 3-3 draw. Roma had an opportunity to win the season series against a team that has struggled for points. Genoa would be without their top two scorers and Roma took advantage of those moments. Even without Nicolo Zaniolo Roma managed to give Genoa the business. In the opening couple minutes of the game Cengiz finally got on the scoresheet again giving Roma a 1-0 lead early. Roma dominated the run and play and we’re in complete cruise control. Roma double their lead right before halftime as Leonardo Spinazzola caused an own goal as Roma ran out to a 2-0 lead. Then right before halftime Genoa got themselves back in the game just seconds before the end of the half. In the second half of Genoa felt a lot of momentum as they constantly were pressurizing Roma. For much of the second half Genoa were in this match and looking to draw even. Despite this Roma had their opportunities but a Mistake by Genoa cost them. As Edin Dzeko scored a late goal due to an unfortunate mistake that gave Roma a 3-1 lead. The momentum that Genoa had was swept from underneath them as Roma went on to secure a massive three points as they win their first League match of the new year after back-to-back losses Roma have put together two victories in a row that will give this team momentum and confidence for the Derby next weekend as the traveling fans left with smiles on their faces.
Tumblr media
Paulo Fonseca team came out with the 4-2-3-1 formation as they typically do the Portuguese manager would make just a couple of adjustments ahead of this match. Alex Kolarov would giving the day off as Leonardo Spinazzola starts for Roma just a week after nearly moving to Inter Milan. Beside him would be the usual centre-back Partnership of Gianluca Mancini and Chris Smalling. Patrolling the right back would be Davie Santon while Alessandro Florenzi would rest for their game against Juventus on Wednesday. In the defensive Midfield we would see Jordan Veretout and Diawara. It would be a very young attacking Midfield. In the central position as always would be Lorenzo Pellegrini who is in a terrific form. On the left wing returning to the starting lineup would be Justin kluivert. On the opposite side on the right wing would it be the Turk Cengiz Under. Then up front as Romans main Striker would be Edin Dzeko who was rested on Thursday who didnt play due to suspention.
Tumblr media
After preparation and predictions the match was just about to get underway in the heart of Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Genoa is in search for points while Roma was looking for their first League win of the new year. Things would start fast and furious for the Romans as they asserted their dominance in the game very early. Cengiz Under tried an ambitious early strike. Despite the miss I’ve seen him score from those types of distances eventually one of those is going to hit the back of the net. The Turkish star is someone that has not played well this season and has dealt with injury problems. He is a player that needs that confidence to push him forward especially with the injury to Nicolo Zaniolo. A few minutes later he would find that moment that should help him immensely. In the fifth minute Justin kluivert set up Cengiz who struck from distance a shot that initially looked like a cross. It went right near the foot of the Pellegrini but the touch was not needed as the Turkish star hit an outstanding strike that ended up in the back of the net to give Roma a 1-0 lead. It could not have been a better start to the match after failing to deliver in front of goal in their previous two league matches. It would be Cengiz under second goal of the season with his first coming in the reverse fixture to start the new season. It’s hard to say how much it will help but it certainly give the Turk some confidence going forward. For the most part Genoa was not really in the game as Roma were in complete control of it having an advantage not only within style of play but in possession as well. Even though Leonardo Spinazzola had nearly joined Inter a week earlier he was pretty special in the match. He tried to pick out a cross for Edin Dzeko. The big Bosnian got his head to the ball but the goalkeeper was able to make the save from close range. Just a few minutes later Edin Dzeko nearly missed a cross from the wing just hitting the top of his head as it went out. It was a really close chance for the Bosnian you could tell by the frustration. Near the half-hour mark Justin kluivert found a Cengiz inside the Box the Turkish star try to double the Roma lead but Perin made the save. Just a few minutes later Edin Dzeko came close again this time by a Lorenzo Pellegrini cross his header was very close just nearly missing. Within minutes later Roma had another opportunity. Roma were given a free kick just outside the box. Without  Kolarov on the pitch Lorenzo Pellegrini stepped over the ball with a chance to prove himself from a set piece. Lorenzo Pellegrini struck a really well hit free-kick that just nearly missed. You could see the curve on the ball as it just had a little too much power. The goalkeeper would have had no chance to save it had he hit it a little lower. Roma were hunting for that goal before they knew it they would have a second. in the 44th minute Leonardo Spinazzola did a tremendous job cutting inside before firing a intended cross that Genoa put in the back of their own net. A really Sensational play by Spinazzola who dribbled through Defenders before finding a gap that ultimately ended up being a goal. It would give Roma a 2-0 lead. Just a minute later Genoa wouldn’t get right back into it Pandev received a sublime cross from Midfield Genoa ended up minimizing the deficit right before halftime. after 45 minutes Roma had a 2-1 lead thanks to Cengiz and Leonardo Spinazzola.
Cengiz Under finally scores again Spinazzola shows his quality as Roma ran out to a 2-1 lead.
It was a really spectacular first-half Roma were consistent they were fluid everything seemed to be going their way. However conceding a goal as quickly as they did made the game a little bit more interesting. Genoa went into halftime with a little bit more confidence than they had before. Scoring late gave them the mentality to try to go forward and get themselves back in the game. genoa knows how much they need points especially this season as they are deep in the relegation Zone and struggling to get themselves out of it. They came into the second half with some energy and tried to crawl back into the game. Stefano sturaro came close from a shot from a complicated area to kick off the second half. However Genoa continued to come forward and look incredibly dangerous. They nearly came close on several opportunities but Pau Lopez completely denied them. In what was one of the biggest moments of the entire game Genoa nearly scored from a header from close range. Goldanigga connected on a header that nearly could have and probably should have went into the back of the net. However Pau Lopez extended making an absolutely Sensational save getting his hand on the ball pushing it out right underneath the crossbar. One of the best saves we have seen this season without question it was a vital part of the game and Pau Lopez came through in a huge way. Just a few minutes later Antonio Barreca tested Lopez from outside the box but once again Pau Lopez made a tough save to keep Roma’s lead intact. Pau Lopez may not have had a lot of work to do but he made big saves and really crucial moments of the game. Genoa had that momentum and had the opportunity to break through it was starting to swing in the other direction. After a save on Jordan veretout and misses by edin dzeko and Leonardo spinazzola Roma went to the bench. Bryan cristante came in for Jordan veretout. They came through with momentum a lack of clinical finishing from Genoa and the goalkeeping abilities of Pau Lopez allowed Roma to take back the momentum. Genoa made a  mistake and Roma took full advantage of it. After a poor pass from Perin Lorenzo Pellegrini picked off the ball just a few meters in front of the box  before picking out a short pass into Edin Dzeko who converted from close range as the ball rolled into the back of the net to give Roma the 3-1 lead. At this point it was all but over never say never but it was going to take something momentous for Genoa to get back into it. It would be the 98th goal Edin Dzeko has scored for Roma as he approaches 100 goals with the club. All the momentum has been taken away after Roma took the lead. Roma nearly increased their advantage as Justin kluivert struck for outside the box came very close to giving Roma yet another goal. In the closing moments Padev shot from close range was denied again by Pau Lopez. The late save signaled the end of the match as Roma held on to earn an important 3-1 victory with another impressive display from Paulo Fonseca men as they reclaim their Champions League spot they had slipped out of the week before.
Edin Dzeko Puts the Icing on the cake scoring his 98th Roma goal as he seals vicotry for the Romans
Roma pick up a massive three points this evening. With the Derby this weekend and a quarterfinal match up against Juventus in midweek Roma really needed points to give them some momentum and confidence going into those two games. Roma had yet to pick up a league win since the winter break ended.  They got their mojo back as they start to heat up. Back-to-back victories for Roma as they win the season series against Genoa. Genoa may not be the most physically imposing team in fact they are likely to be relegated this season. Despite this Roma have struggled at times at the stadio Luigi Ferraris it is a very tough place to play and has a very intimidating atmosphere. Roma dominated the first half and were in complete control throughout the match. Even when Genoa started to show some real qualities Roma were able to hold their own. It wasn’t necessarily an ugly Victory but it was a match that challenged them. Roma were able to get through that obstacle as they tried to build on back-to-back victories in what will be two of their biggest matches of the season in the upcoming week. Under finally find the back of the net for the first time since the opening game of the season. He is not playing with a lot of confidence having dealt with injuries and inconsistencies it is good that he got that goal. Hopefully the Turkish star can build on that throughout the rest of the season with Nicolas Zaniolo out with injury he will have plenty more opportunities to Showcase himself even though he is likely to be sold in the summer. Roma had a lot of opportunities to break this game open in the early part of the game as well as late. When is Genoa started trying to come back Roma showed incredible qualities defensively. Not only did they play well defensively but the defensive Midfield continued to play together and make a really big plays an important spots Diawara looks like a superstar in the making as he put together yet another Sensational display. Lorenzo Pellegrini continued his hot form with an assist as well as making some really big plays late in the game. Even when it looked like they were going to come back Roma did a really good job and holding it off.  The man-of-the-match tonight goes to Pau Lopez even though Roma had control the good portion of the game Pau Lopez made an absolutely outrageous save when it was a one-goal game. If he doesn’t perform at that high level it would have changed the momentum of the game. Roma went on the road into a tough place to play and did exactly what they were expected to picking up three points in the second half  it was shaky at times but collectively it was an inspiring performance that will only give them more confidence for the Derby next Sunday. On top of all of that Edin Dzeko scored his 98th goal for Roma as he settled the result it wasn’t always pretty but Paulo Fonseca has Roma back on track  as he sees his team win at the Lugi Ferriris.
