Fighting the Energy Vampires

Does your home have energy vampires? Most homes in the U.S. have several. Though ominous-sounding, energy vampires are any electronics or appliances that use electricity even when they aren’t in use. This phenomenon is also referred to as “standby power,” which includes circuits that continue to be energized even when the product is turned off.  With our gadget-fixated society, the number of these devices continues to grow - as well as the number of locations where the power is used. 

The amount of electricity used by vampires is minimal, but when combined with several others the result can be quite substantial. The best way to combat this common problem is to simply unplug the culprits after using them. But sometimes this is easier said than done – especially with gadgets that have become a ubiquitous part of everyday life. Milestone believes in conservative energy consumption, which saves both energy and money. We’ve compiled a list of vampires to weary of – and some practical ways to defeat them.

Vampire Hunt

· Unplugging the Product – While this may seem to be the easiest and most obvious answer to fighting standby power, it’s not as simple as it sounds. This is especially difficult if you have multiple people in the household beholden to gadgets and electronics. Consider a mandatory time in the evening when everyone must turn off/surrender their gadgets. Televisions and computers are easier to police, but some TV’s will lose programmed information if unplugged. Not every energy vampire can be eradicated entirely.

· Gadget Control - Leaving smart phones and pads plugged in all day/night isn’t good for the device – or energy use. Keep place in a central location for everyone to keep their device when not in use. A place on the kitchen island or a box by the front door (complete with signage) to encourage the unplugging of devices is a good way to ensure vampires are not sucking power for hours.

· Kitchen Patrol – There are several small appliances that are plugged in all the time, yet only used occasionally. Go through the kitchen and unplug that toaster oven, coffee maker or microwave that is only used once a day/week. Yes, it is a hassle to reset a clock – which are available on many small appliances. Consider using only one clock in the kitchen. If you are consistent with your unplugging, the annoying flashing signal on the time screen will only appear when you are using the item.  

· Charging Station - The average charger consumes .26 watts of energy when not in use – and 2.24 watts when connected to a fully-charged device (according to Energy.gov). Consider creating a charging station with a smart power strip in a central location. This way you can “unplug” all of the chargers at once simply by turning off the strip.

· Smart Power Strips – In addition to using a smart power strip for a charging station, try using a strip in areas where there are several electronics in close proximity. Several devices can be plugged into a strip at once, which would make it very easy to turn off multiple items at the same time.
