⭕️ Social distance in public in India is a real challenge, as on average people standing in line has already its own dynamics. On #Christmas #Eve 2018.... I was #standinginline to pick up an item at a respectable local establishment today. As the line inched forward I study the interactions. Sometimes it takes longer so I #meditate as I wait. My turn comes. I lift my finger to point to the item, the #server acknowledges the couple behind me instead. Takes their order and they move to the #cashregister. I make #eyecontact with the server. No reciprocation. He picks his head back up, takes the order of the next person behind me and off they go to pay. I finally lean in and say, “Excuse me, may I place my order? I have been waiting here for a few minutes and two other parties’ who were behind me were taken care of. I was wondering if #Iaminvisible .” I say this #withasmile and coming from a #placeofunderstanding..... I know that no one really likes to work on #ChristmasEve or a #holiday . I immediately #exerciseperspective, to put myself in the place of my opposite, to understand their possible #challenges and #obstacles . Yet, deep inside I wonder if I looked different (had not shaved yet) or truly AM invisible. If today, as in this specific time in our society, not speaking up is equivalent to non-existence despite being fully present in front of someone. Are we not recognized if we are not familiar in looks? The server wakes up.... almost as if he has been jolted by a taser. He #apologizes and takes my order. I thank him, tell him I understand that especially today it is hectic and wish him a #merryChristmas and #happyholidays . Off I go to pay. I have practiced all my life to improve my #presence with everyone around me, #accepting and #acknowledging them. It is intriguing to study, begin to understand and exercise being fully present everyday.
