Rusty Redesign

I wanted to try my hand at coming up with my own Stex costume designs.

FYI, this is just for fun. I am not a professional costume designer nor am i designing for an actual show.

That being said, i am an artist who has been studying the fascinating way costume designers use outfits to tell audiences about characters for years.

In coming up with this design, I took a lot of elements from Rusty costumes i really like and looked at a lot of pictures of actual steam trains while putting this together. I really wanted it to be recognizable as Rusty and visually very clear that this is a humonoid train.

I wanted to give the impression of him being smaller then the other engines so i gave him rounded pauldrons to really smooth out the line of his shoulders. I also gave him clothes that, while i envisioned them as padded, denoted a softer figure. I really like it when Rusty's lower arms and legs are really built out so i had to include that. Also, I tried to picture actual people wearing these while designing this and i figured extra padding for such a physically demanding role would be a good idea. One of the main points in the show is Rusty 'crashing' after all, performers need as much protection as they can get.

I really like the idea of him having a short ponytail in addition to the headband and thought it could potentially work really well with different hair textures.

I also tried to work the microphone into the design instead of trying to hide it. I thought that the railings (Whatever those things on the train are called) looked like it would be just the thing to emulate.

The number on Rusty's chest is the same as the one generally printed on the knee pads of the costume.

I worked really hard on this and i am so proud of how it turned out. I'd love to hear what everyone thinks. <3

StEx fandom: "Greaseball is stupid lol" *insert "himbo" comment or illiteracy joke*

Me, a fan who actually pays attention: "Actually, he is not. Certainly not Jeff Shankley's original Greaseball. There was nothing to indicate him being a Himbo™️, although I do think he and Dinah have unfortunately been dumbed down over time, but that's a conversation for another day. Furthermore, if you're joking about someone being "illiterate," then you are either ableist or classist. And lastly, GB had just been injured when he misspelled "Sorry"; he was likely concussed.

Electra Redesign

Well, this one took a while. IRL stuff put this on hold for a while but he's finally done. This redesign was done in the same vain as my Rusty Redesign and my Greaseball Redesign.

My thought behind this one was to lean into his iconic original look but with a twist. I ended up abandoning the teal for a more blue and purple look, with a few red accents to really pop. I had him be primarily white since that lends itself more to the idea of him being sleek and new. Also, white stage costumes tend to make performers often look like they're glowing under the lights which i thought would be a good vibe for him. I also chose this palette with the idea that he'd match more with his components, who would keep their purple, blue and red palettes but with darker bases so Electra remains easily identifiable.

His helmet is based off of the sleek rounded look many of the electric engines i looked up have.

Of course, i had to give him a giant mohawk. It just wouldn't be Electra without an epic and over dramatic color block mohawk with lightning bolts. I added a bit of a mullet tail for possible sassy hair tossing potential. Also to really lean into that campy over the top 80s vibe. My thought was that his mike would either be hidden by the high collar or the skullcap/helmet that keeps his hair in place.

I kept his makeup very much on brand with his classic look, big lashes and star points highlighting his cheekbones, though in this case it's lightning bolts. I gave him bright red lips to pull that part of the palette into his face.

As with my Greaseball design i leaned very heavily into the optical illusion department, though to a lesser extent. I gave him wide pauldrons and a 'V' design on the front to give a broad shouldered but slim appearance. His pauldrons have a sharp point and design to to really push that illusion.

This costume wound have several layers, consisting of a bodysuit/leotard, short vest with the collar and the back monitor (pictured in the right corner) and a separate front piece with the chest monitor which would attach to the vest and belt as well as the bodysuit/leotard by snaps. This would subtly build out the performers upper body and reinforce the 'V' shape.

Since part of Electra's thing is him putting on a show and being a spectacle i added lots of things on the costume that would light up. Little yellow lights sticking out of the hair, lights on his thighs and from the monitors on his back and chest.
