In the shower after Nikolai dominates Price in the ring. Here is Part 1.
cw: dom Nik and sub Price, choking (properly this time), frotting, handjob, brief oral, captain’s first subspace; there are no safe words here nor clear cut negotiation. It’s as messy as the two men involved. @jgvfhl has been waiting patiently, so cheers, bud! (Also @aprilplage and @27potatochips were interested? Apologies if not.)
Price stood under the hot shower with his hands on the cool tiles and his head bowed. He tried to focus on the sensation of the water running over his skin, the faint smell of bleach that lingered in the air, the thrum of the old boiler working over time, anything to ground him. His prick ached, standing erect and untouched, and he stared at it with lidded eyes, the flushed skin blurred through the steam and droplets of water on his lashes.
He's never felt like this before. It was like he was floating just outside his body, and yet, somehow, every part of him was sensitive, primed. The world had soft edges, muted almost, but he could tune into a single droplet of water tracking down his spine. He knew it was connected to what had happened in the ring - had felt it descending while he knelt at Nik’s feet - but it was… alien. He felt vulnerable, like he was balancing on a precipice and he could tumble over if he lost focus for even a second, and it… it fucking frightened him, and Price wasn’t accustomed to fear.
This was a bloody nightmare. How could he want such things? Why did the thought of such a violent loss of control not make him balk? He was an officer, decorated, meant to be the best, this was a fuckin’ disgrace, this–
A large shadow loomed behind him. He felt its presence before he heard the footfalls of the man it belonged to splash into the pools of water around the drain, scent gathering in the whirls of steam around his face. He didn't turn - couldn't turn - to reveal his predicament, but that didn't matter. The shadow came to him, a big hand settling cautiously on his hip, Nik's musky cologne distinct to Price’s sensitive nose.
Price didn't pull away. Nik's fingertips sent sparks skittering over his skin, and Price dropped his chin to inspect those weatherbeaten fingers as they gently traced a small scar that curled over his hip bone. In that moment, they were the center of his entire universe.
“Tell me no,” Nik said in a low timber that shot straight to Price's groin. The word should have fallen out of his mouth easily, and he knew Nik would respect it. But Price said nothing, his head bowing further between his shoulders as Nik stepped closer. That hand drifted to Price’s stomach, nails raking through the soft trail of hair around his belly button just as warm lips pressed to slant of muscle sweeping down from Price’s neck. “Tell me no, John.”
There was still a tiny distance between Nik’s body and his. Price could feel the brush of damp hair against his back, knowing Nikolai’s impressive chest pinned him made his mouth water, the whisper of something big against the curves of his arse, and every muscle fiber, every inch of skin, tingled with the need to feel it all. At first, he resisted, holding fast, his fingers curling into his palms. Nik didn't push, only stroked that small area just below where his belt should sit; intimate, never easily accessed, and Price thought he might crack in half if he didn't feel the whole of Nik against him in the next thirty seconds.
Price pressed his knuckles into the tiles and arched his body back a little further, moaning softly when he met the resistance of Nik’s body; the immovable bulwark that had forced Price to the ground and ripped his control away, arm at his throat, strong legs pinning his hips. Nik flattened the hand on Price’s belly and held him there, the thick heft of his cock against the cleft of Price's backside, unashamed of his arousal. He opened his mouth to suck a deeper kiss into Price's neck, and stroked up Price’s torso to cup his chest. “I know what you need,” Nik whispered against Price's skin, “but you need to be good for me. You need to relax.”
Price was pulled taut, his back rigid, his arms firm. A gulf yawned out before him and Nik was asking him to fall into it, trusting that his arms would be there to catch him. Price let out a shaky breath, his chest burning from where he'd been holding it, and slowly tilted his head back to Nik's shoulder. The water hit his face and his eyes blinked furiously into the spray, resisting the urge to close because that was the next step, wasn't it? Closing his eyes surrendered his link to the world to Nik’s care.
Nik turned his face into the bristles of Price's beard and nuzzled with a contented hum. He stroked a nipple between finger and thumb, a soft touch that still made it harden with pleasure, sending sparks through Price’s chest, his knees shaking. “Ty kraséevyi…” Nik murmured breathlessly, relishing the responsiveness of Price's body to his touch. “So eager.”
“Nik, please.” Price didn't mean for it to sound like a sob, but it did and he clenched his teeth with the shame of it, his quivering cock no less desperate as it curved upwards, drooling.
Nik followed the contour of Price’s chest and collarbone to his throat, teasing his bobbing Adam's apple before his palm flattened. His thumb and fingers pressed into the soft skin beneath the hinge of Price’s jaw and squeezed. Price let out a soft, choked moan, his eyes rolling back as his body throbbed with relief and euphoria.
It wasn’t the same chokehold as on the mat, a ruthless crushing of the windpipe to cause as much damage as possible, but he still felt the soreness there and it only added to the descent. If his mind had been clear Price might have identified the reason for the lightheadedness, the rush, as a restriction of his carotid artery, but all he could think about was how easily Nik could snap his neck. How little effort it would take for that huge palm to clamp down and Price's consciousness - his life - to slip away if Nik willed it. He had worked with Nik for so many years, knew what he was capable of, and the sick thrill of it made Price feel weak.
“Beautiful,” Nik repeated in English this time, his voice deep and husky at Price's ear, “the way you want to give yourself to me like this.”
Price growled. Or tried to. It started deep in his chest and ended in a choked gasp as Nik tightened his grip on his throat enough to make stars glitter behind his eyelids. Putting him squarely back in his place. The noise that punched out his chest was more snarl than moan, but Nik sounded delighted. “Or do you wish to fight me again? You want me to take ownership of you, tame you like an animal, captain?”
The hand that had steadied Price at his belly now slid lower, over his thigh and then up the inside to cup his sac in the seat of his palm. Price felt more vulnerable like this, Nik’s big hands cradling the most vulnerable parts of him, than if he had a gun pressed to his temple. His limbs were glued in place, rigid with obedience and desperation, paralysed by Nik’s touch and the silky rumble of his voice.
“But I think you would prefer me to take, no?” Nik licked and bit at Price’s ear, then trailed down the edge of his jaw through his beard. Price's fingers gripped at the tiles, nails digging into the grout, meek little noises escaping his throat as his prick drooled precum over the back of Nik’s wrist. Nik played with his balls, squeezing, tugging, and then let them slide along the top of his thick shaft as he slid it between Price's thighs. “Legs together, captain.”
Price did as he was told. Limbs that had been leaden suddenly inspired into action by Nik's command. He clamped around the hard length of Nik’s cock, the velvet soft skin of it bloody beautiful against his inner thighs. Nik groaned, nuzzling his face into Price's wet hair as he rocked back and forth, shifting his prick only a few inches at a time. “Mm, ya vsyu zhizn' zhdala tebya…”
“Nik, fuck… N-Ni–ah…” Price felt the pressure against his taint, nudging beneath his balls, and then Nik’s big palm wrapped his cock, stroking in time with the slow roll of his hips. The friction walked the fine line of too much, but this wasn't entirely about pleasure. It was about ownership, just like Nik had promised. Nik was using Price's body as he wanted, choking it, restraining it, pleasuring it and taking pleasure from it. Price had no choice but to obey.
“I know you want more,” Nik said, his voice thick and low with lust. “But I will use your hole in private, where I can… mm, where I can take my time with you, where.. ahh, good boy… where no one can interrupt.”
Price panted, whimpered, subdued by the large hand at his throat, intoxicated by the power of Nik’s body rutting against him, his mind unable to focus on anything but the blind obedience demanded of him.
If he lifted his hands from the tiles he lost his one anchor to the world, he threw himself purely to Nik’s mercy, to keep him standing, to hold his body as he used it. Nik’s fist moved faster, thumb sweeping the precum from Price’s slit, squeezing on the upstroke with every slap of his hips against Price’s backside. Nik bit marks into his shoulder through low moans, and listening to Nik grow increasingly erratic, losing himself in dominating Price’s body, threatened to throw Price over the brink. “John, you’re so… good, ya mechtayu o tvoyem tele… mm, ah… hochyu tebya… yebanyi, ah!”
Nik pulled away and spun Price, pushing his back to the wall with a hand returning to his throat, their lips crushing together in a kiss that was all teeth and tongue and a burning passion that stung. The fingers that had teased Price’s cock now took one of his wrists, pinning it to the cool tiles and then sliding up until they intertwined with Price’s. “Is this what you want—what you need, solnyshko?” Nik whispered into the bristles of Price’s beard, biting gently at the line of his jaw.
Price couldn’t speak. Words seemed impossible. Instead, he squeezed the hand in his and rolled his hips into Nik’s, tilting his head to capture Nik’s lips, his mouth yielding to the tongue that licked into it immediately. The hard line of Nik’s body trapping him to the wall, the feel of his thighs, the pelt of hair down his torso that Price was going to bury his face in later rubbing into his skin, slick with water and precum, the bite of Nik’s teeth in his throat, in the meat of his shoulder, it built to a dizzying, overwhelming crescendo. Price finally cried out, his knees giving way as his cock spilled between them. Nik held him up, one arm looping around Price’s waist as his cock twitched and spent in the curve of Nik’s hip.
”So good, John… look at you, kraséevyi…”
Nik lowered Price carefully to the floor, leaving him on his knees as he rose back to his full height, taking the back of Price’s head to feed his cock into the slack mouth awaiting it. Price felt like he was floating on air, his open hands turned up on his thighs, his shoulders and back slumped, and the velvet steel of Nik’s cock on his tongue felt like a divine fucking rite.
Nik was close; his balls drawn tight, teetering on the edge, and it took only a handful of thrusts into Price’s eager mouth before he was spending down his throat. Price’s eyes rolled back at the rich, musky taste of him, choking on it even as he lapped at the underside of Nik’s glans, his eyes watering, cum spilling over his lips and down his chin.
Two strong hands slipped around his head and held it, Nik’s forehead pressed to his, and they knelt in breathless silence under the torrent of hot water together, their tryst washed away and leaving only their quivering bodies as evidence of what had happened. Price had thought he was listless before, but now he was floating outside himself, the warm buzz burrowing deep into his bones, a dreamy calm blanketing his mind where before there had been anxious unease. He was so aware of every inch of his body, and every part of Nik touching him, every kiss that Nik pressed to his face; beneath his eyes, on his cheeks, his lips, his chin. Price had never felt anything like it, had never felt as close to another person as he did now, mentally, physically... fuck, emotionally. It was difficult to clutch onto a thought. All he wanted to do was sleep.
Price didn’t remember how they got back to his room, only the warm towel wrapped around his body and the soft fleece of his joggers, followed by the familiar comfort of his bunk and Nik’s heavy body pressed close in the quiet. He lashed out a hand and Nik caught it, guiding it down to his face where he kissed it gently. “Rest, I have you.”
I have you.
And Price trusted that he did.
It was so easy to give into the heavy weight pulling him under.
Price slept heavier than he had in years, his body a deadweight against Nik’s chest, and when he surfaced the world returned in a thick fog. He saw the flickering red numbers of his alarm clock first—2200–fuck, when—had he? He had slept away the entire afternoon and evening. “Fu—ck.”
”Ahh, welcome back to the land of the living,” Nik said softly, and Price rolled over. It was difficult. The bunk was built for one man and Nik wasn’t exactly a small second. By the time Price had settled, he was so close their noses touched and his entire vision was consumed by sleepy brown eyes. “We need to talk, Jonathan.”
Price swallowed hard, his toes curling, his cheeks warming. “Yeah," he croaked, his voice raw. "Reckon we do.”

Andrew Barclay & Sons 2227/1947 seen derliect at the Rotorua Ngongotahā Railway Trust. (2021)
New to Challenge Phosphate Coy Ltd, Ōtāhuhu as an 0-6-0ST steam locomotive, it served with them until 1966 when it moved up the road to Westfield Freezing Co.
In 1972, it was taken to A. & G. Price's works in Thames and rebuilt to a diesel locomotive, likely due to the boiler ticket expiring. From there, it continued to work at WFCo until 1996.
It was initially preserved by a fledgling Goldfields Railway, but in 2008, it was sold to the Rotorua Ngongotahā Railway Trust. It ran briefly but suffered a transmission failure that was never repaired.
By 2023, the entire fleet of locomotives based at the completely defunct trust were sold. Where 2227 is currently, I have absolutely no idea.

Image 1: a typical modern electric slime tram, with adorable "streamlining" and an Advanced Steam commuter train.
The steam engine is an Advanced steam engine with the gas generator boiler fired automatically using microcontrollers, with compound cylinders, steam super heaters, etc. The driver controls the locomotive electronically from a cab at either end of the train. Advanced steam engines were developed due to skyrocketing oil prices which drove up the price of electricity and made diesel hydraulics much less cost effective to operate. Old style steam locomotives would not have been considered up to snuff and the maintenance facilities for them had dwindled, but Advanced Steam sought to solve the maintenance and servicing problems. Most advanced steam was utilized for very large scale applications like freight hauls and migration trains, but the concepts could also be employed on smaller scales.
Image 2: Locomotives of the Slaibgloth Coal Mine. These comprise about 30 2-8-0+0-8-2 Garrats, 5 Shays, and 5 "easy" (non-articulated) locomotives utilizing spare engine sets from the Garrats and spare boilers from the Shays.
The Garrats were built in 2346 A.D. and retired in 2379 A.D. (two years ago) for service bringing coal carriages from the coal pits up to the interchange at the Glooiw & North Eastern. It is unusual for a coal burning steam engine to remain in revenue service--the majority that remained in use after the development of Diesel-Hydraulics were decommissioned with railway electrification and the ones that remained were mostly converted to oil burning. The Slaibsgloth steam engines meanwhile persisted right up until the closure of the coal mine. Glooiw & North Eastern has acquired the 40 locomotives. Their fates are uncertain but railway preservation groups remain optimistic.

What Fuel would NWR Steam Engines use Today?
Tumblr media
This is a question that I think a lot of people in the fandom are asking, especially with ever-more stringent environmental laws, the war in Ukraine cutting off Russian coal and the end of coal mines in the UK and the western world.
So, what exactly are Sodor's options if Sir Topham Hatt wants to run a steam railway in the 21st century.
I will do a separate post based on what I think the Fat Controllers do to ensure their engines run safely and profitably into the 2020's, but this post is all about fuel. Now, let's talk options:
1: Coal:
This is what Sodor is already using, and is the option that I think Sodor would enter the 2000's with. However, the UK has been rapidly closing coal mines since then, with the last deep coal mine in the United Kingdom, Kellingley colliery in North Yorkshire, closing in December 2015, and many of the mines that produced engine-grade coal already being closed. From this point on, the NWR has two options really: American anthracite coal (which is in decline) or Russian anthracite coal. Most British heritage railways used Russian coal due to its cheap and plentiful nature, leading to their current predicament of skyrocketing prices caused by tariffs and a cut-off from the Russian coal supply. Polish coal is an option some railways are switching too, however this is also quite expensive and not as plentiful as the previous coal.
Another option would be Australian bituminous coal, which is a worse coal for engines but is far cheaper and more plentiful. This would be unlikely, but could potentially be used as a desperate measure by the railway while searching for a better and more permanent option. Remember, bad coal causes a lot of havoc on Sodor even when considering different grades of anthracite coal.
Tumblr media
2: Electricity:
If you've ever watched Train of Thought's video on electric steam (find here), then you may just know what I'm about to suggest. During the 1940's, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) converted a pair of steam engines with pantographs and used the electricity to boil the water. There was also a patent taken out in Canada as recently as 1992 for a steam engine that uses electricity to boil the water.
The pantograph part of the design would not happen - as much as Sodor has updated and modified their engines, whacking a pantograph on them would be crossing a line. So, what are the other options? Well, they could potentially use a third rail, and hide the converters and other pieces inside the bunker or tender, with what space remains being a perfect spot for extra water storage. Another option is batteries in the place of the bunker or tender, this in essence turning the engines of Sodor into battery engines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The issue here is that the batteries are not really very efficient above the size of a Tesla, and a third-rail system has the potential to cause issues with any safety equipment on the ground (GWR had problems with their AWS system when travelling near the Southern Railway or the London Underground).
The battery version is something I could see being implemented on branchline and shunting engines however, as they could stay near charging ports and best utilise the extra range and lower emissions such a change would bring, without having as many drawbacks. Another advancement would be using an electric battery to preheat the boiler and to power the electrics in the coaches.
3: Biodiesel:
Before anyone goes insane about the idea of converting the NWR engines to oil-fired, I think I should say that I mean torrefied biodiesel pellets, as tested by the CSR in the USA on steam locomotives since as early as 2016 (article linked here). Torrefied biodiesel pellets have similar qualities to coal, including the fact that they can be shovelled and stored similarly to coal.
Tumblr media
They don't really look that different to coal, do they? And in this trial, the engine they were trialling it on (Milwaukee County Zoo Train No. 1924) not only ran on 100% torrefied biodiesel, but also reached just under 200PSI. CSR has also ran tests on standard gauge engines, and the fact is that the Skarloey Railway would probably be an early adopter.
Furthermore, Sodor is a primarily agricultural island, and due to globalisation, the farms would be looking to find new crops with which to make a profit from, as the prices of cheap international products hurts their smaller farms. The NWR looking at biofuels would be a golden opportunity for them, and the NWR would have the crops needed for biodiesel locally, decreasing shipping costs.
The issue with biodiesel as a fuel is that it does not burn as hot as conventional coal, and it burns quicker. It does however start burning sooner, meaning setting a good fire in the mornings would be easier.
Tumblr media
Railways using steam power are currently being faced with these major issues, and Sodor would probably be at the forefront of the debate, as its heavy usage of steam and early diesel engines makes for problematic encounters with environmentalists. However, Sodor would also be one of the largest supporters and financers of steam research, and would, in my opinion, use a mix of electric steam and biofuels to preserve their fleet of engines well into the 21st century. And yes, it would be theoretically possible to create an entire scientific essay out of this.
One again, pictures are not mine, and remember to tell me your ideas!

🚂 In need of some cool engines for TTTE OCs? Look no further! 🚃
Here's a list of all sorts of unusual and little known engines to make into your next OCs!
Tumblr media
1082 class electric locomotive: Not much is known about this engine, so information is fragmented. This Austrain steam engine was powered by electricity heating up the water in its boiler through electric coils. The hydroelectric system was apparently 50 years ahead of it time and was built in response to the rising prices of imported German Coal during WW2. This engine and ones like it Sweden, were scrapped after the war ended. I'll never understand why. Such a self sufficient engine could have been the key to many break throughs.
Tumblr media
2. DRG Class 05: This German streamlined engine was made in response of record breaking streamlined diesel engines made earlier. In 1936, this engine set the world speed record for reaching 124.5 mph, while hauling 217 short tons. However this record was later beaten by Mallard, (Yes, that Mallard. The LNER Gresley one.) on a technicality. Mallard was on a slightly downhill line, and with a heavier train. Interpret that as you will. If you want Gresley family drama, I have a feeling this engine would make a great OC to start it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. B&O #305 Camel: This unique engine was trademarked by the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in the 1900s. It's unusual build allowed to pull trains up steep mountains. This build also came with a terrible flaw. Since the cab was placed directly above the boiler, it became very hot and anyone in it would not only be uncomfortable, but in terrible danger if if the engine ever derailed. And there was very little protection for the crew. In short, it was like an overbred dog. Created purely for one purpose, and not with health or safety in mind. More information can be found at the B&O website.
Tumblr media
4. The Rail Pickup Truck??? (GMC Switch Engine): Well, if you need a Fankid that's a cross between a steam engine and a pickup, I've got you covered! Haha! Not much information on these, except that they were used during WW2 and were modified for rail use.
Tumblr media
5. Ateliers Moës-Freres Diesel: This little guy is absolutely adorable! He'd definitely make an cute OC! This engine one of many diesels built by the popular Belgian company Ateliers Moës-Freres. They're were know for making exceptional small diesel engines. Even ones that looked like steam engines! Unfortunately, I couldn't any information on what exactly this engine's name is. But if anyone does know, please contact me so I may add it!
Tumblr media
6. M-497 (Nicknamed Black Beetle by the press): This futuristic engine was once the fastest engine in North America! It was an experiment, developed by the New York Central Railway. Two J47-19 Jet Engines were attached to a streamlined Budd Rail Diesel Car. The experiment was successful, with the engine reaching a speed of 183.68 mph. Despite the successful run and the valuable data gathered, the project was considered to quote "not considered viable commercially". Black Beetle continued to run after the jet engines were removed, until retirement in 1977 and being scrapped in 1984.
And that's it for now! If you guys like these OC ideas, make sure to let me know, so I can make another one! Also, it's important to note, that I am not an expert on engines. If you see any misinformation here, please let me know, so I can correct it.
Thanks for reading!

69.   “You’re so skinny if you turned sideways and stuck out your tongue, you’d look like a zipper.”
70.   “You know, we’ve been pretty tough on the kid. What do you say we cut him some slack?”
71.   “Don’t you ever close that book?”
72.   “In this passage here, the shepherd seems to be leading up to something. He calls it the Heart of Atlantis. It could be the power source legends refer to.”
73.   “Sometimes I get a little carried away, but hey you know, that’s what this is all about. I mean, discovery, teamwork, adventure. Unless, maybe you’re just in it for the money.”
74.   “I guess I’m still a little rusty at this. I haven’t gone camping since…well…the last time my grandpa took me.”
75.   “I never got to meet your grandfather. What was he like?”
76.   “No offense, but how does a teenager become the chief mechanic of a multi-million dollar expedition?”
77.   “I took this job when my dad retired, but the funny thing was he always wanted sons, right? One to run his machine shop and the other to be middleweight boxing champion. He got my sister and me instead.”
78.   “It was like a sign from God. I found myself in that boom.”
79.   “Trust me on this, you don’t wanna know. Don’t tell him. You shouldn’t have told me, but you did, and now I’m telling you, you don’t wanna know.”
80.   “All right, who’s not dead? Sound off.”
81.   “Who are you strangers and where did you come from?”
82.   “Your manner of speech is strange to me.”
83.   “Bout time someone hit him. I’m just sorry it wasn’t me.”
84.   “How do they know all these languages?”
85.   “Maybe English is in there somewhere.”
86.   “We are explorers from the surface world. We come in peace.”
87.   “Welcome to the city of Atlantis.”
88.   “There were not supposed to be people down here. This changes everything.”
89.   “You know the law. No outsiders may see the city and live.”
90.   “Your majesty? On behalf of my crew, may I say it is an honor to be welcomed to your city.”
91.   “You presume much to think you are welcome here.”
92.   “I know what you seek and you will not find it here. Your journey has been in vain.”
93.   “Some obstacles cannot be removed with a mere show of force.”
94.   “Return to your people. You must leave Atlantis at once.”
95.   “May I respectfully request that we stay one night, sir? That would give us time to rest, resupply, and be ready to travel by morning.”
96.   “Your heart has softened. 1,000 years ago you would have slain them on sight.”
97.   “1,000 years ago the streets were lit and our people did not have to scavenge for food at the edge of a crumbling city!”
98.   “We were once a great people. Now we live in ruins. The kings of our past would week if they could see how far we have fallen.”
99.   “If these outsiders can unlock the secrets of our past, perhaps we can save our future.”
100. “What they have to teach us we have already learned.”
101.   “Our way of life is dying.”
102.   “Our way of life is preserved. When you take the throne, you will understand.”
103.    “The king and his daughter don’t exactly see eye to eye. She seems to like us okay, but the king…I don’t know. I think he’s hiding something.”
104.     “If he’s hiding something, I want to know what it is.”
105.     “Someone needs to talk to that girl.”
106.     “I have some questions for you and I’m not leaving this city until they’re answered.”
107.      “I have some questions for you and you are not leaving this city until they are answered.”
108.      “There is so much to ask about your world.”
109.      “You are a scholar, are you not? Judging from your diminished physique and large forehead, you are clearly suited for nothing else.”
110.       “How did you get here? Well, I mean, not you personally but your culture. How did all of this end up down here?”
111.        “It is said that the gods became jealous of Atlantis. They sent a great cataclysm and banished up here.”
112.        “All I can remember is the sky going dark and people shouting and running. Then a bright light, like a star, floating about the city. My father said it called my mother to it.”
113.        “Are you telling me that you remember because you were there. No that’s…that’s impossible.”
114.        “How is it you found your way to this place?”
115.        “If it weren’t for this book, we never would have made it.”
116.       “Legend has it that your people possessed a power source of some kind that enable them.”
117.      “You mean you can understand this? This right here, you can read this?”
118.       “Such knowledge has been lost to us since the time of the flood.”
119.       “Follow the narrow passage for another league. There you will find the fifth marker.”
120.     “It looks like some sort of vehicle, but no matter what I try, it will not respond.”
121.     “That’s an easy thing to miss. You know, you deserve credit for even getting this far.”
122.      “This is great! With this thing I could see the whole city in no time at all!”
123.      “My grandpa used to tell me stories about this place as far back as I can remember. I just wish he could be standing here with me.”
124.    “Don’t forget to eat the head. That’s where all the nutrients are.”
125.    “The most we ever hoped to find was some crumbling buildings, maybe some broken pottery. Instead we find a living, thriving society.”
126.    “We are not thriving. True, our people live, but our culture is dying.”
127.     “We are like a stone the ocean beats against. With each passing year, a little more of us is worn away.”
128.      “I have brought you to this place to ask you for your help. There is a mural here with writing all around the pictures.”
129.      “You do swim, do you not?”
130.      “This is amazing! A complete history of Atlantis!”
131.      “It’s the heart of Atlantis!”
132.     “Don’t you get it? The power source I’ve been looking for, the bright light you remember. They’re the same thing!”
133.      “What’s going on? What’s with all the guns?”
134.      “I am such an idiot. This is just another treasure hunt for you.”
135.      “I would’ve told you sooner, but it was strictly on a need-to-know basis. And, well, now you know.”
136.      “I had to be sure you were one of us. Welcome to the club, son.”
137.      “I’m no mercenary.”
138.      “I prefer the term adventure capitalist.”
139.       “You’re the one who got us here. You led us right to the treasure chest.”
140.       “What’s to know? It’s big. It’s shiny. It’s going to make us all rich.”
141.        “You think it’s some kind of a diamond. I thought it was some kind of battery. But we’re both wrong.”
142.        “That crystal is the only thing keeping these people alive. You take that away and they’ll die.”
143.       “Academics. You never want to get your hands dirty.”
144.      “Think about it. If you gave back every stolen artifact from a museum, you’d be left with an empty building. We’re just providing a necessary service to the archeological community.”
145.     “Do yourself a favor. Don’t be like him. For once, do the smart thing.”
146.      “You will destroy yourselves.”
147.      “I suggest you put a bandage on that bleeding heart of yours. It doesn’t suit a mercenary.”
148.     “The heart of Atlantis lies in the eyes of her king.”
149.     “You don’t have the slightest idea what this power is capable of.”
150.     “I can think of a few countries who’d pay anything to find out.”
151.     “All it says here is that the crystal is alive somehow.”
152.     “Why don’t you translate and I’ll wave the gun around.”
153.     “Hold your horses, lover boy.”
154.     “So this is how it ends, huh? Fine. You win. You’re wiping out an entire civilization but, hey, you’ll be rich.”
155.      “That’s what it’s all about, right? Money.”
156.      “Get off your soapbox. You’ve read Darwin. It’s called natural selection. We’re just helping it along.”
157.     “Look at it this way, son. You were the man who discovered Atlantis, and now you’re part of the exhibit.”
158.     “Be serious. This is wrong and you know it.”
159.    “We’re this close to our biggest payday ever and you pick now of all times to grow a conscience.”
160.    “We’ve done a lot of things we’re not proud of. Robbing graves, plundering tombs, double parking. But nobody got hurt. Well, maybe somebody we got hurt, but nobody we knew.”
161.     “She has been chosen. Like her mother before her.”
162.     “In times of danger the crystal will choose a host. One of royal blood to protect itself and its people. It will accept no other.”
163.     “The crystal thrives on the collective emotions of all who came before us. In return, it provides power, longevity, protection.”
164.     “In my arrogance I sought to use it as a weapon of war, but it’s power proved too great to control. It overwhelmed us and led to our destruction.”
165.     “That’s why you hid it beneath the city, to keep history from repeating itself.”
166.     “If she remains bonded to the crystal, she could be lost to it forever.”
167.    “The love of my daughter is all I have left.”
168.    “My burden would have become hers when the time was right, but now it falls to you.”
169.    “Return the crystal. Save Atlantis. Save my daughter.”
170.    “I followed you in and I’ll follow you out. It’s your decision.”
171.    “I think we’ve seen how effective my decisions have been.”
172.    “Let’s recap. I lead a band of plundering vandals to the greatest archeological find in recorded history thus enabling the kidnap and or murder of the royal family, not to mention personally delivering the most powerful force known to man into the hands of a mercenary nutcase who’s probably going to sell it to the Kaiser! Have I left anything out?”
173.  “It’s been my experience when you hit bottom, the only place left to go is up.”
174.  “I didn’t say it was the smart thing, but it is the right thing.”
175.  “We better make sure he doesn’t hurt himself.”
176.  “This is it! We’re going to rescue the princess! We’re going to save Atlantis! Or we’re going to die trying!”
177.   “I love it when I win.”
178.  “We were in this together! You promised me a percentage!”
179.  “I have to hand it to you. You’re a bigger pain in the neck than I would have ever thought possible.”
180. “I consider myself an even-tempered man. It takes a lot to get under my skin, but congratulations! You just won the solid-gold kewpie doll!”
181.  “That’s a darn shame, because I’m just getting warmed up!”
182.   “Atlantis will honor your names forever. I only wish there was more we could do for you.”
183.  “You sure you want to stay? There’s a heroes welcome waiting for the man who discovered Atlantis.”
184.  “I don’t think the world needs another hero.”
185.   “Let’s go over it again, just so we got it straight. You didn’t find anything?”
186.  “I hope this piece of proof is enough for you.”

HELLO INTERNET! WELCOME TO THOMAS THEORY!
The show that is not original in the slightest but doesn't care! Before we start I figured I should explain some things. This is not meant to be taken seriously and if I say something as a joke, please don't attack me. I'm not trying to hate on these creators. But with that out of the way lets get into this!
Now for those who don't know somehow The Stories of Sodor is A Thomas and friends fan series made by the Australian YouTube Victor Tanzig in his own unique take on Thomas and friends and his work is PHENOMENAL. The man won an award for it in The Steamy awards! But in season 5 I got to wondering about Mr Hall's Seam Diesel Conversion, otherwise known as SDC. Basically you put a motor in a steam engines boiler to save money which in theory should work, but I'm not so convinced. I think that behind the scenes Mr Hall is unintentionally bankrupting BR.
So if we go online the average cost for a Diesel engine varies but since most the engines on Sodor are mainline tender engines I just used the class 40 diesel motor as a baseline. Now I couldn't find the exact numbers as the price would only be calculated for the whole locomotive at about $3,00,000. So we'll just say about $1,000,000 as my best guess. Now that's a LOT of money for conversion not including the gears and modifications that need to be made. On top of that engines like Emily are extremely old and would probably need complete rebuilds to make the old metal they have able to keep up with the stress. Now the recent April fools episode leaked from Victor's Patreon isn't canon however Patrick makes a good point about engines needing to be completely changed to fit bigger engines as technology advances or else they can't keep up.
So there you have it folks! Mr Hall has unintentionally bankrupted British Rail! I think metal fatigue is gonna be the least of your worries. But hey! That's just a theory! A THOMAS THEORY! Thanks for listening!

The Spine has a guilty pleasure
(This was written in October and just sat in my notes app until now.)
This fic is basically 4 headcanons wrapped into a very short story.
Spine was chirping and clicking to himself quietly, a few whistles also escaping his voice coder as he spoke in this automaton language. This had been how he’d spoken for most of his life when he wasn’t with humans, having taken 3 years to learn English properly, so he found comfort in speaking this way to himself.
He was currently off at the store to buy some things the Walters had needed and they’d sent him by himself. He didn’t like being out of the house alone, it stressed him out, so he was attempting to sooth himself as he read the list over and drummed his fingers on the push handle of his shopping cart.
Humans were looking at him, sometimes pulling their children closer. He knew why, he was big after all. It’s not every day one sees an automaton at the store, let alone a 7ft tall automaton quietly speaking to himself.
He sighed as he looked over to the seasonal section, he could see the Halloween decor and was tempted to go grab some, buy some new accessories for one of his siblings or even just look at the various costumes, all too small for himself.
After a few seconds he started moving again and turned towards it. He really shouldn’t be letting himself be tempted by this section, the plastic skeletons and cowboy accessories weren’t necessary after all, but every time he was sent unattended he had to go look.
He was mentally debating with himself, deciding if he actually wanted this plastic gun, when he saw the candy. He couldn’t eat, he didn’t have anywhere besides his boiler for food to go and the mechanical organ was extremely delicate, but as he saw the candy corn he whined and put the toy gun down.
He carefully picked up a bag of candy corn off the shelf an observed it and the price, it was affordable and a decent enough quantity. Flipping it over and reading the ingredients didn’t show anything weird in the list. He quickly opened the “seat” and placed two bags down into it… this should last him a while and he probably won’t get found out if he only ate a few pieces at a time and spaced it out enough.
As he continued on with the shopping he’d originally been sent out to do he wondered if the Walters knew he did this, he’d been doing it for years and had always been careful to not hurt his boiler with this guilty pleasure of his but he must have still smelled somewhat sweet for a while after eating it. He had to have some sort of sugar residue in his boiler when it was cleaned… steam vented from his neck as he pushed the thoughts aside and glanced down at the list before taking a loaf of bread, if it had been an issue someone would have come to him about it.

Tuesday 5.. March 1839
7 40
2 ½
cousin came just after breakfast 35 minutes with A- before dressing – finish dullish cold wind-whistling morning F37° inside and 33° outside at 9 a.m. breakfast at 9 20 in ½ hour – read a few pages and made  a little note or 2 before breakfast – afterwards with Robert Mann + 2 at the top terrace, and set him to lengthen the temporary flag in front of the house with Robert the joiner ordering about door into Johns’ pantry to 2ft. 8in. broad and 6ft. 3in. high – then had Booth – charged him to see that Mark Hepworth understood that he was bringing the stuff from St. Annes’ street Northgate by the cube yard – the glazier (Firths’ man) here mending windows – putting a new tap on the kitchen pipe and removing the once-intended housemaid closet (little field reservoir) water pipe – to come again on Thursday to fix it in another place – about 11 or afterwards had Messrs. Holt and Garforth – the latter had examined the drum of the steam engine – he said it will not do as it is – it wants the small shaft taking out, and making smaller so as to work easily in its place – and the thread at the end wants to be coarser so as to throw it in and out of geer quicker – G- would do all the above work, being all that is required, in 2 days, supposing the screw to be made which would take one day in making – that is, G- would do the whole in 3 days for the sum of two pounds – asked him how much he thought the engine-business would cost more than it ought to have done – he asked £300 – I turned to Holt and said I laid that to him he ought not to have let it been so – he said, it was somebody elses’ fault (SW.’s) not his (Holts’) – he could not help it – I merely said, if I got off for £300, it was as little as I expected – on talking the matter over I said as G- would answer for setting the drum right in 3 days, I could want that time longer – after waiting – (been delayed) 6 months 3 days longer did not signify much and the Scotch engineer deserved no better from us than to let him fail again – so Holt to leave the drum to its fate, and merely let the Low moor people know to fit up the boiler with the extra piping required so that that might be ready when the cylinder arrived – Holt and Garforth and if possible Mr. Harper to be here to see the engine tried – Holt said he never was in such a place in his life as A-‘s Hinscliffes-pit – a throwdown of 5d. or 15? yards – wondered how they got the coal – ½ acre of Hannah Walkers’ coal to get – would consider a few days about the value of the remainder of the coal A- has to get – unlet – to stick up to the present price £200 to see what Hinscliffe really would give – but he would hardly give (Holt thought) so much as £150 per acre – mentioned to Holt Mark Hepworth having told me on Saturday that Speight of Scholes would come forward to prove that he had helped to get and measure the Hinscliffes’ father and Walsh and co. stole from my uncle – Holt to take Mark Hepworth with him and go over to Speight and inquire into the matter – Thomas Pearson killed one of the pigs this morning – the horses ordered for 2pm. and came about that time – but I was with Robert the joiner in the tower cellar cutting away part of the bottle crate opposite the door, and moving the lead pipe – dressed – off with A- in the carriage to Heath at (near) 3 – about an hour there – went with A- she going there to see Mr. Wilkinson and tell him her wish to give up the Sunday schools’ at midsummer – Mr. Wilkinson not at home – gone to Huddersfield on the surrogate business it being the 1st Tuesday in the month – Miss Wilkinson and Mr. and Mrs. Fenton received us – the latter at the gate, and turned back with us – Miss W- nervous and sorry at A-‘s giving up the schools’ but much obliged and behaved very well seeming very anxious to settle matters to the satisfaction of his fathers’ parishioners – Mr. and Mrs. Fenton, too, very civil etc. etc. but it struck me that he was neither sorry nor surprised at A-‘s giving up – from incidental conversation I should think Mr. F- a supporter at heart of the Oxford Tract men, and .:. not anti Roman Catholic – he maintained that there were no conversions - the Roman Catholics opened their purses to build chapels but the congregations were Irish – no conversion – F- had 300 or 400 in his late parish (Ilkley) never preached against them – no conversions there  unless there was a farm to let or something of that kind – (Mr. Middleton the squire there an influential Roman Catholic) – when I mentioned the tract-men, and asked what could be thought of them, F- made no answer – suspicious silence! I am heartily glad A- has at last mustered up resolution to get rid of these schools in creditable time – before any hint, clerical or otherwise, that better management than hers might be attained – from Heath to Mr. Parkers’ – had P- in the carriage – Sunday little business of A-‘s; and I mentioned the Hinscliffe coal-trespass – P- says we must file a bill in chancery – has heard of the Manns’ business with Mr. Freeman – Report says the Manns are worth a thousand pounds – Robert told me this morning Mr. Alexander had had a letter from Mr. Higham purporting that F- would let them off on paying £50 – if not would proceed against them – from Mr. Parkers’ to Whitleys’ – ordered Wilds’ map of Asia minor – then to Nicholsons’ but did not get out of the carriage – home at 5 ½ - Robert had lengthened out the flagging way in front of the house (with old causeway stones) to within 4 or 5 yards of the terrace wall – A- and I walked there till after 6 – then about in the house – dressed – dinner at 7 – A- read French in the dining room – coffee – asleep – read the newspaper till 10 – then wrote all the above of today till now 11 ½ pm finish dullish day – came upstairs at 11 50 at which hour F37 ½° inside and 31° outside – above ½ hour with A- left her at 1 5 – then sewing up a napkin for cousin  till two and twenty five minutes

Choosing the Right Espresso Machine for Your Coffee Shop
The espresso machine is the heart of any coffee shop. It’s the cornerstone of the barista’s craft, responsible for delivering that rich, aromatic shot of espresso that coffee lovers crave. Whether you’re opening a new café or upgrading your current equipment, choosing the right espresso machine is a critical decision. With so many models and features available, it’s essential to understand what to look for to meet your needs and ensure consistent, high-quality coffee.
In this blog, we’ll explore the different types of espresso machines, key features to consider, and tips for making the right purchase for your coffee business.
Types of Espresso Machines
Espresso machines come in several types, each with varying levels of automation and control. Your choice will depend on your shop’s volume, the skill level of your baristas, and the kind of coffee experience you want to offer.
1. Manual (Lever) Espresso Machines
Manual espresso machines are designed for skilled baristas who want complete control over the brewing process. With these machines, the barista manually controls the pressure and flow of water through the coffee grounds by pulling a lever.
Pros: Allows maximum control over the extraction process, offering a unique hands-on experience.
Cons: Requires expertise and practice, not ideal for high-volume cafés or inexperienced baristas.
2. Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines
Semi-automatic machines are the most common in specialty coffee shops. They automate water temperature and pressure but allow the barista to control the extraction time by manually starting and stopping the shot.
Pros: Balances control with automation, making it accessible for most baristas while allowing for creativity.
Cons: Still requires some level of skill to operate efficiently.
3. Automatic Espresso Machines
Automatic espresso machines simplify the brewing process by controlling both the water pressure and the shot timing. With the push of a button, the machine consistently delivers an espresso shot, making it ideal for busy cafés.
Pros: Consistency and speed, ideal for high-volume operations.
Cons: Limited control over the extraction process compared to semi-automatic machines.
4. Super-Automatic Espresso Machines
Super-automatic machines are the most user-friendly option, handling every step of the brewing process, from grinding the beans to frothing the milk. These machines are perfect for establishments where efficiency and consistency are priorities.
Pros: Fully automated, easy to use, minimal training required.
Cons: Limited customization, higher price point, less hands-on control for baristas.
Key Features to Consider
When choosing an espresso machine for your coffee shop, several factors will determine which model is the best fit for your business. Here are the key features to keep in mind:
1. Boiler Type and Capacity
The boiler is a crucial component of an espresso machine, as it heats the water needed for brewing and steaming milk. Espresso machines typically have either a single boiler, dual boiler, or heat exchange system:
Single boiler: Less expensive, but can’t brew and steam milk simultaneously.
Dual boiler: Allows for simultaneous brewing and steaming, ideal for busy cafés.
Heat exchange: Uses one boiler for both brewing and steaming, striking a balance between cost and functionality.
If your coffee shop expects high traffic, a dual boiler or heat exchange system will keep things running smoothly without compromising on quality.
2. Temperature Control
Temperature stability is critical for producing consistent espresso shots. Look for machines with PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controllers, which allow precise temperature control. Consistent water temperature ensures a balanced and flavorful espresso.
3. Portafilter Size
The portafilter holds the coffee grounds during extraction. Most commercial espresso machines come with either 58mm or 54mm portafilters. A larger portafilter offers better consistency and control over the extraction, which is why 58mm is the industry standard for professional machines.
4. Steam Wand
For milk-based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos, the quality of your steam wand matters. Look for machines with a powerful, easily adjustable steam wand that allows baristas to froth milk to the desired texture and temperature. This feature is essential for creating velvety microfoam for latte art.
5. Durability and Maintenance
Investing in a durable, easy-to-maintain espresso machine will save you time and money in the long run. Look for machines built from high-quality materials such as stainless steel, with easy access to internal components for cleaning and repairs.
6. Size and Footprint
Consider the physical space available in your café when choosing an espresso machine. Larger machines with multiple group heads (the parts of the machine that brew espresso) will take up more space but allow for more drinks to be made simultaneously.
7. Grinder Compatibility
No espresso machine is complete without a high-quality grinder. Pairing your espresso machine with a reliable grinder is essential for consistency. Consider whether the machine you choose is compatible with the grinders you’re considering or if you’re looking for an all-in-one machine that includes grinding.
How to Choose the Right Espresso Machine for Your Coffee Shop
Selecting the right espresso machine depends on several factors specific to your coffee shop:
1. Volume of Customers
If your café sees a high volume of customers, opt for a machine with multiple group heads and dual boilers to allow your baristas to brew multiple shots at once and steam milk simultaneously. For smaller or slower-paced shops, a single-group semi-automatic machine may suffice.
2. Barista Expertise
If your baristas are skilled and enjoy having creative control over their coffee, a manual or semi-automatic machine may be the best fit. However, for shops focused on speed and consistency, an automatic or super-automatic machine will streamline the process and ensure consistent quality with less training required.
3. Budget
Espresso machines can range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. While it can be tempting to choose a lower-cost machine, investing in a durable, reliable machine will save money in the long run by reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
4. Future-Proofing
Consider the long-term needs of your business. Will you expand your café or increase your coffee menu? Choose a machine that can grow with your business, so you won’t need to upgrade sooner than necessary.
Conclusion
Choosing the right espresso machine is a vital decision for any coffee shop owner. The machine you select will influence the quality of your coffee, the efficiency of your operations, and ultimately, your customer satisfaction. By understanding the different types of espresso machines and the features that matter most, you can make an informed choice that sets your coffee shop up for long-term success.
