A big bright smile enlightened your face when you heard the final whistle blow coming from the TV. You felt a wave of relief mixed with happiness, although the game ended with a great win from Chelsea, you couldn’t relax until the referee put an end to it. Mason again had an amazing performance, giving his life on the pitch and scoring two goals that made him Man of the Match once again, for the third time in a row.
You felt your heart swell in pride, no words could describe how happy and proud you were for him. Seeing him happy on the pitch, assisting his mates and scoring goals was something that always made you more enamored by him, his love for what he did was probably the thing that you admired the most in him.
“Daddy won again!” In her blue Chelsea jersey, Maya exclaimed in pure happiness, her smile as big and bright too, the same as yours.
She had been over the moon with so much pride for her daddy over the last week, not missing one match and always chanting Mason’s name when he appeared on the screen. When Mason returned from Italy she managed to stay awake until he got home later at dawn, refusing to sleep until she could tell how proud she was of him.
“Yes baby, he did.” You beamed at her when she leaned closer to you, her big eyes looking up at you.
“Can we eat ice cream to celebrate?” She asked with a grin, batting her eyelashes when she rested her chin on your arm.
You let out a laugh slip past your lips and shook your head slightly, bumping her nose with your middle finger. “Maybe after dinner, alright honey?” You stroked her hair and she just smiled nodding.
“We can have vanilla ice cream, daddy likes it a lot.” She rumbled whilst coming down from the sofa, smiling at you before squatting down to pay attention to her toys now.
You felt your heart warming at her words, she always made sure to make small notes about what Mason liked or disliked ever since she started spending more time with him. Their bonding was only getting stronger and that was something that you would always cherish.
After chatting a bit more with Maya you got up from the sofa deciding to start preparing your dinner, since you had the idea to make homemade pizza because it was Mason’s favorite and after today he deserved it. You knew it was gonna take some time until everything was finished, so you put some music on your phone and started getting some ingredients you needed, always taking glances to the living room to watch your girl. The time passed and Maya even came to help you in the kitchen, both of you having fun and dancing together whilst cooking. Moments like these you wanted to memorize forever.
The sound of and engineer turning off outside was enough to catch your daughter’s attention and she climbed down the stool with you helping her, and when the door opened and Mason’s figure come into vision she ran straight to him, and he had time only to let his bag on the floor before catching her in his arms on a big hug.
“Daddy, you did really good today!” She smiled at him, her small arms wrapped around his neck.
Mason’s smile was bright and illuminated his whole face, you felt your stomach flutter when his eyes locked on yours. His big brown eyes shone with so much happiness that you could feel and notice from a distance, your heart warming at how happy he was.
“Thank you, baby.” He left a kiss on her temple and stroked her hair fondly, “Did you enjoy watching the match today?”
“Yes! It was so cool when you scored that goal,” Maya exclaimed, her eyes shining in adoration when she responded. “Mummy and I screamed so loud!” She imitated exactly how you two had done earlier while watching the game and that got laughs from all three of you.
Mason grinned and Maya nodded her head smiling. “Well, I guess you two were really happy.”
“Mummy said we can have ice cream to celebrate!” Again Maya batted her eyelashes at you with her sweet smile as you raised your eyebrows and crossed your arms.
“I said maybe, miss.” You walked closer to them, poking her cheek when she pouted. Mason just snorted when he alternated looking between you and Maya.
“Please?” She joined both of her hands and gave you the best puppy eyes that all of you knew you couldn’t deny a thing to her.
You sighed defeated after thinking for ten seconds and just nodded your head, “Okay we can have ice cream after dinner.” Maya squealed in Mason’s arms clapping her hands in happiness and making you both laugh at her cuteness. “Go pick up your toys then we can eat, okay?” You caressed her strands as she nodded.
Maya gave Mason a quick kiss on the cheek before he squatted down and put her on the floor, and after your eyes followed her to the living room, you turned to look at Mason again and he was already beaming at you. Not wasting time your arms wrapped around his neck and his hands rested on your waist before hugging you tight, his breathing tickling your neck as your hands played with the strands of his growing hair.
“Congratulations on your win, babe.” You mumbled with a smile, feeling him sighing in content in your embrace. You pulled away slightly just to study his face, his beautiful smile and the look in his eyes making your heart race in your chest. Leaning closer you felt his lips brushing on yours before kissing you passionately, his tongue roaming past your lower lip and you felt your knees weak. “I’m so proud of you. We’re so proud of you.” One of your hands came to stroke his face.
“Thank you,” He said smiling, his cheeks blushing a little at your words and your smile only got bigger. No matter how many years you were together, Mason still blushed when you complimented him.  “Did you enjoy the game too?”
“Yes, you know I love watching you play,” You pecked his lips again, his hands now stroking your waist. “You were amazing today as always. Maya was over the moon with that goal, she almost fell from the sofa celebrating.” Mason tipped his head back whilst laughing and you did the same when you remember how it happened.
“I’m glad I made my girls happy.” He pressed a kiss on the corner of your mouth before catching your lips on another passionate kiss, his hands stroking your back when you sighed in content in his embrace this time.
You both spent some minutes just exchanging some kisses and sweet words before your bubble was interrupted by Maya complaining that she was hungry, so you let Mason go change into more comfortable clothes than his tracksuit while you and Maya set the table so the three of you could eat dinner.
You all chatted a little while eating, Maya always asking questions about the game to Mason that were more than happy to answer all of them. After having dinner, you let her have a bit of the ice cream she was craving since earlier that day and you yourself couldn’t resist having some too. The three of you agreed on watching a movie after dinner, Maya not giving a chance for you two to choose another movie rather than The Little Mermaid.
After twenty minutes into the movie, Maya was already half asleep on Mason’s lap. You were cuddled to his side, your hand stroking the strands of your daughter's hair. “I think we should bring her to the Bridge next game.” You whispered, catching his attention that was focused on the TV.
“Really? Do you think she will like it?” He raised his eyebrows in surprise, turning slightly to face you.
“She’ll love it Mase,” You raised your head to look better at him. “You know, she’s really proud of you.”
The smile on his face was full of adoration and the look in his eyes were pure love when he looked down and caressed Maya’s face, your chest swelling with so much love you could hold for both of them.
“I love her.” He whispered, enchanted by her features that looked so much like you.
“She loves you too.” You whispered back, your hand coming to stroke his cheek and his eyes found yours again.
No matter how much time passed you’d always feel weak on the knees when he looked at you, the butterflies on your stomach making an appearance whenever his eyes locked on yours.
“I love you,” He mumbled in a low voice, leaning closer to you.
And whenever he said those three words, your heart would trumble in your chest. Because you feel it, not just when he said it, but when he looked at you, when he touched and when he kissed you. That was something that you wanted to have forever in your life.
“I love you too.” Whispering back, you pressed your lips on his in a gentle but still full of love kiss.

In the frame
Tumblr media
Words: Elizabeth Rust; Photo: Lima Charlie
When I arrive at Brown & Co on East Dulwich Road, inside there are a group of three-year-olds from Little Jungle Nursery. The group are gathered around Karoline Oruain Mason, aka Karo, who is explaining to the children how to frame a picture.
Karo holds up a painting of a brightly coloured flower in a vase. She puts a frame around it, then asks the group: “What does a butcher sell?” A little girl says “Chicken”. Karo nods. “What does a baker sell?” This time a little boy says, “Bread!” “That’s right,” Karo says. “And we sell picture frames for all your paintings.”
Karo then comes over to me and says, “They’d been staring through the window for quite some time, so I invited them in!” Karo is warm and friendly, and I’m not surprised that she welcomed the children in unannounced.
Karo has worked at Brown & Co for 22 years. When she started it was known as Thames Gallery and was run by Pauline Brown, Pauline’s late husband Steve and another couple. There were two shops then, one in Putney by the Thames – hence the name – and the other here in East Dulwich.
Originally the Putney shop was the gallery and the East Dulwich premises was the workshop. When the lease expired on the Putney space and the other couple decided they wanted a career change, this left the East Dulwich unit, which is now a shop on the group floor and a workshop in the basement where the bespoke frames are made.
“Last year we decided to do the shop front up, and we thought about changing the name from Thames Gallery to Brown & Co,” says Zoe Brown, Pauline’s daughter who now works full time at the shop.
To announce the new name, they created a huge framed sign and hung it in the window: “Dear customers old and new, after our recent shopfront refurbishment, we seek to reassure you that we remain the same team behind what was Thames Gallery.
“After some 33 years in this spot we realise that actually we are nowhere near the River Thames. So with that in mind we have decided to change the name of the shop to take in our family name, and reflect the fact that it is and remains a family business.”
Zoe is still concerned that locals don’t know that she and her mum still run the business. She’s keen for everyone to know that she’s been working at the family business since she was 15 years old.
Five years ago she decided to take the role on full time after her stepdad Steve got sick and her mother took care of him until he sadly passed away. “Mum taught all her three children how to do it. It’s just second nature to me,” she says.
Brown & Co sell artwork produced by local artists, and I pick out an etching by Oscar Eaton. It’s a black and white image of two men trudging through the snow.
There’s a wall of potential frames in all colours of the rainbow, with different finishes, textures and woods.
Zoe explains that whenever someone comes to her with an artwork to be framed, she always stands back and studies whatever it is. She then asks questions about where it will be placed in their home and makes suggestions about what frame, mat and glass would be most appropriate. “At the end of the day, what we are doing is protecting whatever is being framed,” she says.
At the back of the workshop is the current project she’s working on. An American client has asked Zoe to frame her old school pictures. This time she’s added a modern frame around the image of a 1980s schoolgirl to give it a new lease of life.
There’s also a film poster, The Breakfast Club, which she says will probably be hung in an office, paintings by schoolchildren, vintage Japanese prints and Parisian dining scenes. Every single image has been carefully framed and cared for by the team at Brown & Co.
Zoe takes me to the basement where Lucio and Marcel are working. The two men are surrounded by planks of wood, which they cut to exact dimensions to fit around images. Every week they make 40 to 60 bespoke frames.
Spring is a busy time of year Zoe says, as people are getting their homes ready after winter and thinking how to spruce up their homes. After the frame has been created, it then goes upstairs where Zoe and Karo lay the prints, making sure everything fits to exacting standards.
But how does Zoe feel about a bog standard IKEA frame? “What we do is make something that will last longer. Those frames may warp, and they may damage the image because they haven’t been mounted correctly. We also have many more options besides black and white to choose from and we can respond beautifully to the image. And we’ll go to your home! We can suggest what the best options are,” she says.
That’s when a customer comes into the shop. He would like an image framed, one he picked up while traveling in Mumbai. It’s a brightly coloured image with lots of gold, reds and greens. He asks Zoe to find a white frame, something very simple to go with the rest of the artwork at his home.
As Zoe explained to me before, she looks at the image, admires what the man has brought in and then suggests a white frame, and also a gold one. And while the man likes the idea of the gold frame, he goes with his original idea of a white one with a white matting. Zoe takes his details and explains that it will be about three weeks to complete the framing.
After he leaves she says to me: “You really need to listen to the customer. He wanted to go fast. Some people want to go fast. Then some people want to stay. Last summer a lady stayed for two hours, and that’s OK. This is a people-driven, social job. I can easily spend hours with someone, because this is going into their home and we want it to be nice.”

(also i was wondering if you guys would like me to turn this into a series? i was just thinking about some follow on’s abt their domestic life and stuff, let me know if you like this idea!)
Tumblr media
“I think it’s a little crooked.” You tucked your lips, tipping your head to the side a little whilst watching Mason arranging the carpet in Maya’s bedroom.
He looked up at you with narrowed eyes, getting up from his spot and walking over you. Gently he held your face, raising your head so you could see right this time. “And now it’s not.”
“Oh.” You breathed, the carpet now looking perfectly wry in your vision and you giggled turning to face him. “Sorry babe.” You pecked his lips.
“Don’t judge my hard work.” He said dramatically and you just rolled your eyes at him, tucking your lips in a soft smile. Mason scanned the bedroom, checking all the furniture he had changed a million times in the past hour, “Do you think she’s going to like it?” He looked back at you, eyes filled with worry.
“She’s going to love it, don’t worry Mase.” You reassured him, your arms circling his waist to bring him closer. “She loves everything you do, if you had put on a duvet on the floor with some plushies she’d be over the moon, trust me.” You said matter of factly, his laugh vibrating in his chest making you smile wide.
The past month had been nothing but crazy for you, after the day you accepted moving in with Mason your routine went upside down. Neither one of you wanted that to take long, so with the weeks passing by Mason helped you gather your and Maya’s stuff at your old apartment so he could take it to his - and now yours - house. It took about two weeks for you to gather everything, some days you felt a little stressed because moving in can be very handful, but in the end it was more than worth it.
Maya was over the moon with all that changed in her life in that month, every day that passed making her more excited to finally be in her new home. It took you a couple of days to sit and talk to her about everything, maybe fearing that your daughter wouldn’t like that idea too much but like always Maya had proved you wrong.
“Sweetheart, I need to talk to you about something.” You said sitting on the sofa besides Maya, her big emerald eyes turning from the telly to look at you.
“About what, mummy?” She asked, full attention to you now.
For everyone it seemed to be a simple task, just tell her and bear with it; but for you it wasn’t simple, even if you practiced what to say to her in your mind days ago. Maya was a very intelligent child even for her age, and you were more than proud about it, but she tended to be very sensitive to some things. You had to be careful with your words, because even if she understood things fast, you didn’t want her to be uncomfortable with that. You knew she loved Mason just as much as he loved her, but anyway it was a big change.
“Come here,” You patted your legs and she climbed onto your lap, her emerald eyes blinking at you. “Did you like spending the week at daddy’s?” You asked first, just testing waters with her and by just noticing you had mentioned Mason her eyes lighted up.
You both had spent last week at Mason’s, he himself suggested the idea so Maya could be more familiarized with the place and a new routine, even if she had been there so many times before. Mason had picked up at school all week just like he promised her, fitting his routine with yours and hers at the same time. And she absolutely loved that, every day she came home she started babbling about how he had taken her to eat ice cream or the bad jokes he had told her all the way home.
Ever since she started calling him that way, with so much love and caring, you didn’t imagined their bond could grow any more, but she even cried a little before you went back to the apartment, complaining that she didn’t want to leave her daddy but you both reassured her it wouldn’t be too long.
“Yes!” She responded with a big smile, “We did a lot of fun stuff!”
“We did, right?” You smiled back at her, caressing her soft hair. “What if we did that everyday? Would you like that?”
You scanned Maya’s face and when she gasped and a bright smile took upon her face before she nodded fiercely. You smiled back, all of your worries vanishing in a second. Besides fearing her reaction, deep down you knew she’d be over the moon with the idea of moving in with Mason, just like you were.
“So we could do that, we’re not gonna live here at the apartment anymore. Me and daddy agreed to live together, all three of us, so we can’t stay here anymore. Is that okay with you, baby?” You asked calmly, your eyes searching for any negative reaction from her and finding nothing more than exciting.
“We gonna have a big house now?” She grinned and squeaked in your lap, making you laugh at her words.
“Yes sweetheart, we’ll have a bigger house now!”
She threw herself in your arms, laughing in joy and you just hugged her tight, sighing in relief. It was indeed easier than you thought it would be, you cursed yourself mentally for letting your worries take over you, but in the end it all went more than perfectly.
“I’m happy, mummy.” Maya said after pulling away from you, her eyes were as bright as her smile and that made your heart swell with so much love.
“I’m happy too, baby.” You kissed her forehead, putting some strays of hair around her ear. “I love you.”
“I love you too, mummy.” She kissed your cheek and hugged you again.
You explained to Maya that it would take some weeks until you were finally installed at your new house, but that didn’t keep her from bragging to everyone she saw that she was going to live with her mummy and daddy in a big house. That’s all she kept talking about over the weeks, and it made you more excited than you’d ever thought it would be too because taking that next step with Mason was something that meant a lot to you. Being with someone that actually cared and loved not only you but your daughter too felt like living a dream.
“Did you finish here? I need help to unpack my last suitcase.” You pouted your lips, feeling his arms circling around your shoulders.
He nodded his head, leaning closer to press his lips on yours in a chaste kiss. “Yes, you can go start unpacking, I’m gonna gather all this plastic here.”
“Okay.” You mumbled before kissing him again, smiling in between and pulling away to walk back to your bedroom.
When you entered your newly bedroom, you sighed seeing your last suitcase opened on the bed with the amount of clothes you forgot you had. You were glad Mason had a closet that fitted his and your stuff, otherwise you’d be lost not knowing what to do with that many clothes and shoes.
Not long enough after you started folding your clothes and separating your clothes, you felt a pair of arms around your waist and his chin resting on your shoulder. Even if you couldn’t see his face from the angle, you knew he was smiling and that made you smile the same, leaning your back at his chest. Mason kissed your cheek softly, starting to press kisses along the uncovered skin of your neck, grinning when he felt you shiver under his touch.
“Are you gonna help or just hinder me?” You asked, giggling when his beard tickled you a little.
“I have some more interesting ideas…” He turned you so you could face him, a smirk playing on his lips as he pulled you closer to his body.
“Oh, do you?” You raised your eyebrows, your arms wrapping around his shoulders and tipping your head to the side.
Mason just nodded before brushing his lips against yours, his teeth nipping your bottom lip before kissing you passionately. His tongue darted out, asking permission to deepen the kiss and you just gave in to his touch, sighing in content when one of his hands came to your face to caress your cheek. He pushed you slowly until the back of your tights hit the bed, lying you down onto the mattress and pushing some of your clothes on the floor before he came under you, one of his arms supporting his body over yours.
“Mase, my clothes…” You whined parting the kiss, looking at the mess on the floor and frowning at your boyfriend, who just shrugged.
“Shush babe, we have more important business here.” He kissed your cheek, before kissing the tip of your nose and making you laugh at his words, then his lips were back on yours.
Your hands went straight to his fluffy hair, pushing him even closer to you. Mason hummed between kisses, one of his hands traveling under the shirt you were wearing and his fingertips caressed your skin, drawing random patterns that made you shudder under his touch. His mouth found your neck again, his teeth nipping at your collarbone before kissing it again and a soft moan left your lips.
You rocked your hips against his, hearing him grunt and you spread your legs wider so he could adjust his position between them. His kisses started to become a little sloppier, your own mind starting to fog with all the sensations, your hand traveling under his shirt and your nails taunting his toned abs, feeling his muscles clench under your touch. He rocked his hips against yours this time, your stomach flipping when you felt his boner on your tight and that made you whine between his kisses.
Both of you got carried away with the steamy make out session, your mind only wanting and anticipating his touches before you heard a loud honk of a car outside that made you jump in startle and pull away from him breathless. “Mase, get off me.” You pushed him off from you, hearing him whine in annoyance and he rolled to the side.
You climbed off the bed and got your phone from the bedside table, confirming that the honk you heard was from your sister's car and she was waiting outside with Maya. She went to a little friend’s birthday party that afternoon and spent some time with her auntie, your sister being more than happy to spend the day with her.
“Leah is back with Maya, I’m gonna go get her and you tidy up here.” You said already fixing your hair on a ponytail, unwrinkling your clothes in front of the mirror.
“What? Why?” Mason whined and pouted, looking at you from the bed as you just scoffed.
“Because you made a mess.” You poked your tongue out at him before leaving the room and walking upstairs.
You checked yourself on your phone screen one last time, making sure that you were presentable. When you opened the door and followed to the gates, you smiled when you saw Maya and your sister already waiting outside the car.
“Mummy!” Maya came running to you with a big smile on her face, you scrunched down a little just to be at her height. “Mum look, I’ve got a butterfly!” She exclaimed excitedly, pointing to her cheek where setted a face painting of a butterfly.
“Wow baby, you look so pretty!” You smiled admiring her painting, your hand stroking her hair.
“She almost made me get one too,” You heard your sister’s voice and stood up laughing, giving her a hug. “But I wouldn’t be as pretty as her.” Maya laughed this time.
Maya hugged your legs when you stood up, blinking up between you too. Leah handed you the bag with your daughter’s stuff, “Do you want to come in? I can make us some tea.” You smiled at your sister.
“You know I’d love too Y/N, but I have to go. Promised Patrick I’d be home by five so we could have dinner together.” Leah pouted a little but you just giggled, nodding your head. “But we should do something together though.”
The moving process really made you busy, and you felt a little guilty because you didn’t have time to spend with your sister, she was your bestfriend and you missed her. “Let’s have lunch this week, I’ll text you.” Leah smiled and went to hug you.
You both said your goodbyes, and after your sister hugged Maya and went back to her car, you held your daughter’s hand and headed back into the house. You left her bag by the sofa in the living room, walking straight to the kitchen. “Are you hungry, baby?” You asked her as she struggled to stand up in the stool by the counter and you giggled before helping her carefully.
“No mummy, thank you!” Maya smiled and you pressed a kiss on her forehead.
You chatted with her whilst you made yourself a snack, smiling when she got excited telling you all about her amazing day. You heard footsteps coming from the stairs and not long enough Mason appeared on the kitchen door frame, his bright smile on his lips when he saw Maya and she didn’t waste time on coming down the stool and rushing towards him. He scrunched down a little and she jumped on his arms, hugging him tightly. “Daddy look, I’ve got a butterfly!” She pointed to her cheek just like she did when she saw you.
“It looks amazing, sweetheart.” The smile she gave him made your heart stumble a little, no matter how much time passed you’d never never get over the way they both loved each other. “That deserves a picture.” Mason smiled and lowered himself just to put Maya on the ground, bringing his phone out from his pocket after. Maya laughed while making a pose when Mason pointed his phone at her, taking countless pictures and videos of her. You just smiled watching them, giggling when Maya complained about the blurry pics your boyfriend took of her.
“Daddy, can we play football?” She asked a little later, looking up at Mason with puppy eyes and he looked at you with the same expression and you rolled your eyes.
“Nuh uh, no football, you played all day honey. It’s time to shower and put on some comfortable clothes.” You could hear her whining and complaining, knowing too well she didn’t like to be contradicted. When you turned to look at her, Maya was already pouting and you sighed, lowering yourself to be at her height. “There’s no reason to be upset baby, you can play with daddy tomorrow. Besides, we got a surprise for you.” Her whole demeanor changed and her face lighted up at your words, making you smile.
“Really? What it is?” Her voice was filled with excitement and you giggled, stroking her hair.
“If we tell you then it’s not a surprise.” Mason was the one to say and that made Maya frown, crossing her arms in front of her body.
Mason couldn’t help laughing at the little girl, taking her in his arms again and giving her a little kiss on the cheek. He asked her to close her eyes and she did as he told, asking about what it was and you both didn’t respond immediately, just walked up the stairs and stopped in front of Maya’s room. Your heart was beating a little faster now, anticipating her reaction already knowing she would more than love it.
“Ready?” Mason asked her softly and she just nodded her head.
The three of you entered the room, Mason covering her eyes with his hand so she could not see it yet. He turned a little to look at you, the excitement clearly in his eyes too and you smiled at him, feeling as giddy as him. After he removed his hand out of her sight, Maya blinked slowly to adjust to the light in the room before she started to look around, her eyes wide as she scanned the room. Mason seemed a little apprehensive because Maya didn’t said anything at first, but when she turned to look at him with that bright smile of hers all of his worries disappeared.
“This is going to be your room now, did you like it?” He managed to ask, smiling as big as her.
“It’s so pretty, I loved it!” She exclaimed in full happiness, clapping her hands making both of you laugh. Mason put her back down letting her rush around the room, neither one of you containing the giddy feeling of seeing Maya happy like that.
You felt like your heart would combust with so much love and happiness, never in your life you imagined being so happy like this. A lot has happened to you since Maya came into your life, things weren’t always easy and at difficult times you almost gave up, but ever since you met Mason and decided to let him in things had been more than great. You couldn’t put into words how much you were grateful for him in your and your daughter’s life.
“Thank you daddy,” Maya said with her biggest grin, asking for another hug from Mason that he wasn’t able to deny.  He got her in his arms again, her small hands wrapping around his shoulder. “I love you.”
Mason sighed and closed his eyes, peppering a kiss on her temple. “I love you too, baby.”
You felt your eyes tear up at the scene in front of you, feeling overwhelmed with so much love and bliss. Mason opened his eyes and looked at you, giving you his beautiful smile and opening his other arm so you could join the hug and you wasted no time in leaning closer to him, one of your arms circling his waist and the other caressing Maya’s back.
You left out a content sigh, a smile on your lips as well knowing there was no place you rather be than there, in the arms of the man you loved alongside your beloved daughter.

“Mummy, can we have pancakes?”
You snorted as you struggled to find your keys without dropping the little girl in your arms. As you finally managed to crack the apartment door open, you scrunched down to let Maya run straight to the living room.
“No pancakes sweetheart, it’s almost dinner time.” You said leaving your and your daughter’s nursery bag on the couch, leaning down at her height when you saw her pouted lips. “We can have them for breakfast tomorrow, what do you think?”
Maya smiled big, nodding her head and you felt your heart swell at that sight. Almost five years and you still couldn’t believe that you managed to create the most beautiful and amazing child. It was difficult at the beginning, being just you and the baby you find out you were expecting from a man that clearly wanted nothing to do with you too. So many times you thought of giving up, but just looking at your daughter’s features and that feeling would go away in a second.
Being a single mom was really difficult, but you were glad you had the support you needed from your family and loved ones.
“Can I watch The Little Mermaid?” Maya asked, her big emerald eyes looking at you just like a lost puppy, and to that you couldn’t say no.
“Of course baby, but let’s get changed first.”
After you changed Maya and yourself in comfortable clothes, you put her favorite movie on TV and went to the kitchen to start preparing dinner. You got carried away humming the songs from Little Mermaid that you already knew by heart and smiling listening to your daughter singing along too. Your attention was caught by your phone vibrating in the kitchen island, and when you saw your boyfriend's name popping up on the screen your smile just got bigger.
Tumblr media
After that quickly chit chat with Mason, you focused on cutting the vegetables again. And after twenty minutes, you could hear the front door unlocking and Maya fussing in the living room, running straight to greet her favorite person.
“Masey!” She screamed in happiness, hugging his legs with her small arms.
Mason managed to scrunch down with the supermarket bags still in his hands, almost falling when Maya jumped to hug him tightly. A breathy laugh leaving his lips, hugging her back sideways with his free arm. “Hello princess, how are you?” You felt your stomach flutter with butterflies when you saw his brown chocolate eyes shining with pure love while talking to your babygirl.
You’ve met Mason a few years ago, Declan was the one to introduce you both. It didn’t take too much for you to fall for him, his charm and beautiful smile along with his cocky and funny jokes was enough to make your heart beat a little faster. But you also learned he could be a little shy, just when he asked you out for the first time and stuttered between his words and that made you fall for him even more.
At that time, you were really scared to be involved with someone else having a three year old to take care of, you were afraid to introduce new people into Maya’s life, mainly men - even if you haven’t been with anyone since her birth. But Mason was a prince from your dreams, literally. Still to this day you remembered how his eyes shined when he first met your daughter, how caring he was to her, always asking what she liked to do and to watch, and for Maya it wasn't different. She loved him from the beginning; they were attached to the hip, she loved to see him playing football, running around with him saying she would be a footballer just like him.
You couldn’t wish for someone better, Mason was really the man from your dreams and you loved him with your entire heart. And you knew, just by the look in his eyes, that the feeling was reciprocated.
“I drew you in class today!” Maya said with her biggest grin, “Do you wanna see it?” She was jumping excitedly.
“Of course I wanna see it!” He beamed at her, and not long enough Maya ran to her room looking for her drawing.
With that, Mason walked over to you, his lips tucked in a smile that made your knees weak. Leaving the bags on the counter top, he approached you sliding his arms around your waist and leaning a few inches closer to your face, his eyes scanning your features and making your cheeks blush a little. “Well, hello to you too, pretty girl.”
“Hi, Mase.” You said with a grin before leaning and pressing your lips to his in a sweet kiss, the tip of his tongue pressing around your lower lip and you let him deepen the kiss, your arms locking around his shoulders as your hands found his short locks. You hummed in content, letting you get distracted by your boyfriend kissing you. “Missed you.” You whispered after parting your lips from his.
“I missed you too, babe.” He pouted and you smiled, peppering kisses along his face, hearing him laugh and squeeze your waist.
Mason had a crazy schedule being a footballer and with you not working from home everyday tended to be quite hard to see each other every other day, especially since you haven’t moved in with him yet.  That was something both of you discussed a few times, Mason would always ask why you haven’t moved to his house already, claiming that the house was too big for him and he needed you and Maya there with him. You never gave him a full answer, because even if you knew him completely for over two years and loved him as much as you do, you were still scared of something that even yourself couldn’t tell right what it was.
You were both interrupted by a very excited Maya running back from her room, her drawing already in her hands as she pointed to it. “Masey, look! I draw you, me and mummy!” Mason stepped away from you, groaning a little while lifting the little girl in his arms, the smile never leaving his face.
“Wow, it looks amazing!” He gasped, looking in awe at the paper in his hands as if it was the most beautiful peace of art he ever saw.. “Aren’t you an artist yourself, Miss Maya?”
She squeaked and laughed when Mason tickled her side, “Did you like it?” Your daughter dared to ask, looking anxious for his answer.
“Of course, baby, I loved it. Can I keep it?”
“Yes!” She almost yelled, clapping her hands and making the three of you laugh.
You walked over to the counter top, back to finish cutting the vegetables and some ingredients so you could finally eat dinner. You could hear Mason and Maya chatting about their days, your daughter telling him about how she learned new things at school and your boyfriend always being so attentive to what she was saying. They kept talking until your little girl asked if he could play with her, and he immediately said yes. She ran to her room again to gather her toys and you felt Mason’s arms wrapped around your waist and you leaned your back against his chest.
“How was your day?” He asked softly, kissing your neck and making you shivered against his lips.
“Mhmm, it was good. Didn’t have too much paperwork to do, so it was kinda peaceful.” You answered, maneuvering some pans to the stove. “How about yours?”
“Tiring.” He sighed dramatically, which made you snort. “But I managed to nutmeg Reece for the first time in my life, so I guess it was good.”
You both laughed at that, and after you finished the dishes you turned around, your arms wrapping around his shoulders again. “What an achievement!” You said with sarcasm in your voice and he rolled his eyes.
“Actually, it is a big achievement, so I deserve a reward.” Mason grinned and that was your time to roll your eyes at him.
“A reward? For nutmeg Reece?” You raised your eyebrows and just scoffed at him, trying to turn around to the stove but Mason was faster placing his hands at the kitchen counter, on the both sides of your hips, locking you there.
“Please?” He asked you with a put on his lips and the puppy eyes he knew you couldn’t resist.
Another eye roll from you but this time with a breathy laugh, as you leaned in pressing your lips against his in a chaste kiss. He frowned at you when you parted, making you laugh. “I gave you a reward, so now let me go so I can finish dinner.”
“That was not the reward I was talking about.” The smirk on Mason’s lips and the way his eyes darkened a little was enough to understand what he was talking about. You gasped at his words, slapping his arm and moving away from him.
“Get out you perv,” Mason laughed at you, giving your bum a squeeze and you turned to him with eyes widened. “Mason!”
“Sorry babes, it’s just hard to resist.” You narrowed your eyes at him, ignoring the way your heart beat fastened and your cheeks blushing, trying not to get worked up at the wrong moment.
Neither one of you said anything anymore as Maya came back with her toys in hand, demanding that Mason go to the living room to play with her. You just smiled seeing your boyfriend agree with your girl and went play with her as you worked on finishing dinner. It didn’t take and the dinner was ready, the three of you eating together and making small talks between the meal. Maya excitedly talked about going to the park the next morning just as you planned all week.
After finishing dinner, all three of you now were cuddling on the sofa while watching some film that wasn’t The Little Mermaid anymore. Maya was already fast asleep in Mason’s lap, her head resting against his chest and his arm around her, while you had your head resting against his shoulder. You took a look at your daughter, your heart swelling at the sight of Mason holding her so safe. It always made you feel things when Mason was holding Maya, the way he was so caring and attentive to her was one of the many reasons you fell harder for him every passing day.
“I should put her in bed, “ You began whispering, already getting up from your spot but Mason Just Shook his head.
“Stay Y/N/N, I’ll do it.” He whispered back, a sweet smile on his lips.
And just as Mason was about to get up from his position, Maya sensed the change of positions and stiffed in his arms, gripping his hoodie with her small hands. But what made you two completely froze in spot was when you heard her soft voice saying, “Daddy, no.”
Mason looked at you with eyes widened, his heart beating faster in his chest, you stood there in the same shock as him, not sure what to say or do. He cleared his throat after what it was two or three minutes, caressing her hair in assurance. “It’s okay princess, just going to put you in bed, okay?” At that, Maya just hummed and got back to her peaceful sleep and Mason managed to get up with her, smiling at you before walking to your daughter’s bedroom.
You sat back on the sofa, your heartbeat a little faster than usual as you tried to comprehend what just happened. Ever since you found out you were pregnant, Maya’s progenitor didn’t want anything to do with your pregnancy, he rejected you and your daughter, and you knew it would be hard to raise a child on your own, but you never gave up. Maya knew she wasn’t like other kids that had a mum and dad at home, and you struggle to not let your daughter down because she didn’t have a father figure in her life. That’s why it took you months to introduce Mason into her life, because if he was like other men you got involved with, it had no point in that.
But Maya was intelligent for someone so little, although sometimes she asked you why she didn’t have a dad, it never took a toll on her. You worked hard to give your daughter everything she needed, even if you had to be mum and dad at the same time. But you knew sometimes she missed it, even if didn’t show it directly to you.
When Mason came into Maya’s life you knew something changed, for all the three of you. It wasn’t the same to have a dad and mum, but she had Masey to hold her hand when she needed, to swing her in the park, to build a snowman when winter comes around, someone you know that both of you could trust with your heart and soul. Knowing Maya was starting to see Mason as a father figure made you emotional, because the fact that she loved and trusted him enough for that made you also relieved.
Relieved because you knew Mason was the man of your life. Two years together was enough for you to know that you wanted a life and so much more by his side.
“She’s a light sleeper, isn’t she?” Mason’s voice startled you, as you were so lost in your thoughts to notice he was back. He smiled at you, seating comfortably by your side and opening his arms for you to cuddle him.
You smiled and hummed, cuddling on his side, your head leaned on his chest as one of his arms were around your waist and the other caressed your hair. Both of you stayed in silence for a few minutes, the film still playing but none of you paying attention to it.
“Did she just call me daddy?” Mason asked in a small voice, making you shift slightly to look up at him. Looking from close, you could see his eyes tearing up a little and that made your chest swell at his reaction. “I’m sorry, it’s just-” He was about to excuse himself when you kissed his lips.
“Mase… It’s okay,” You ran your fingers against his jaw, feeling his beard tickle you a little. You were not sure what to say, so you leaned to kiss him again this time more passionately. Your mouth opened so he could deepen the kiss, feeling his soft against yours and making your stomach flutter.
He gave you a few more kisses, making you both smile between them. “I liked it.” He whispered, eyes looking into yours.
“What?”
“That she called me her daddy.” He said, his cheeks turning slightly pink. “I always dreamed of having a girl, you know. And I love her, just as much as I love you.” He caressed your cheeks this time, making you give in to his touch.
“We love you too.” You whispered, “So much.” You kissed him again, earning a chuckle from him. “And I think she likes having a daddy, too.”
The next morning, you woke up at giggles and plates rattling in the kitchen. You soon got up from bed, not wanting your kitchen to turn into a warzone as you knew Mason and Maya had no cooking skills. When you entered the kitchen, Maya was standing in a stool with Mason behind her, securing for her not to fall whilst your daughter tried hard to mix the ingredients for pancakes in a bowl. You couldn’t resist the need to capture this moment, so you took some photos of them with your phone before Maya noticed you in the room.
“Mummy!” She exclaimed excitedly, asking Mason to put her down and she came running to you. “We’re making pancakes!”
You scrunched down to hold her in your arms, hugging her tight and giving her a kiss on the cheek. “Good morning baby, did you sleep well?” You beamed at her when she kissed your cheek back.
“Yes I did,” She looked at you with her big emerald eyes, shining with joy. “Masey is teaching me how to make pancakes.” Maya exclaimed with a big grin, looking between you and Mason.
When you looked at him with raised eyebrows, it seemed like she forgot what happened that night, but none of you said anything. “Well, is he teaching you right?”
Maya nodded fiercely, making both of you laugh a little as you put her back in the stool and went to give your boyfriend a good morning kiss. “Slept well, babe?” He asked you in a sweet tone and you nodded, giving him another kiss.
The three of you spent the morning making various pancake flavors, with fruits and chocolate, until Maya started asking what time you were going to the park. After giving her a shower and choosing a comfortable outfit for the day, you too got in comfortable clothes and asked Maya to gather the toys she wanted to take with her.
“Are you okay?” You managed to ask Mason when he was waiting for you in the living room, seeming a bit off this morning.
“Yeah babe, I’m fine.” He smiled at you and kissed your cheek, but you could sense that something was off. And you knew it was because of the way Maya called him this morning.
You sighed but your thoughts were interrupted when Maya came back from her room with her bag of legos in one hand and football in another. That made you laugh a little, and when Mason turned to see why he let a breathy laugh escaped his lips.
“Is that all, honey?” You asked, already taking your purse from the sofa.
“Yes, mummy!”
And with that the three of you managed to leave your flat, Mason driving to the park that was near to your neighborhood.
The day went more than satisfying, Maya played with all of the other kids at the park and when she got tired of them she asked if Mason could play football with her, and to that he obviously said yes. You captured some pics and videos of them playing, laughing when your daughter managed to score goals against your boyfriend, and he turned out to be more competitive than you thought he would, scoring goals against Maya making her whining in protest.
And when evening came and Maya started to whine about wanting to go home, you and Mason gathered her toys and he drove back to your flat, stopping at a drive thru to get something so you all could have lunch at home.
The three of you were now seated on the living room floor, eating the take outs Mason had bought from the way home. Maya was having the time of her life while eating her chips, and when Mason stole one of her she looked at him and frowned. He laughed and stole another one, making your daughter whine in protest.
“Daddy, stop stealing my chips!”
And there it was again, his heart beating faster as he stopped in his place. You look up at him, his eyes watering again as he just stood there not knowing what to say. Silence took place and Maya felt that something had changed, because when she looked up at Mason and saw his tearing eyes she shrugged and looked back at you.
“Did I say something wrong?” She asked in a small voice, looking between you and Mason searching for an answer.
“No baby, of course not.” Mason said, reaching for the little girl and holding her in his lap. “You didn’t say anything wrong, don’t worry.” He gave her a reassuring smile.
“But why are you crying?” She asked, her eyebrows frowned still not understanding.
Mason looked at you, searching for help as he didn’t know how to speak to Maya about that. You smiled at him and sat closer to both of them, your hands caressing your baby girl hair.
“Baby, would you like Mase to be your dad?” You asked softly, but feeling your heart beat faster too when Maya gave you the most beautiful smile you had ever seen in her face.
“Yes!” She squeaked, clapping her hands whilst shifting in Mason’s lap to look up at him. “Masey, would you like to be my daddy?” She asked him, her emerald eyes shining with the idea of having him as her father. Mason looked at you, this time the tears running down his cheeks as he nodded to Maya.
“Of course princess, I would love that!” Maya yelled with such excitement, hugging Mason tightly and he didn’t waste any time in reciprocate, hugging her just as tight. The look he gave you made your knees weak and the butterflies in your stomach flutter in. You could feel the tears running down your cheeks too, and you went to hug them too.
Maya was only four years old but she was more intelligent than other people, and that evening she proved it to you one more time. She knew Mason wasn’t her biological father, but the bond they had built within those last two years of your relationship was enough for you to know that he was the one designed to be her father.
The three of you spent the evening watching films and playing around, Maya was more than happy every time she said “daddy, look!” to something that caught her attention and Mason giving his attention straight to her.
That night, Mason tucked her in bed again, having a small conversation with Maya whilst rearranging her blankets in the small bed. You leaned against the door frame, watching them both with your heart at ease with the sight of the man of your life with your bundle of joy.
“Yeah, I promise I’ll pick you up from school next week.” He said to her, a lovingly smile on his face when Maya grinned. “Now go to sleep honey, it’s already past bedtime.”
“Good night daddy, I love you.” Maya said with a small voice, eyes already closing.
Mason kissed her forehead, tucking her hair behind her ear and saying “Good night princess, I love you too.”
After tucking Maya in bed, you and Mason went to your bedroom and as soon as he closed the door, he let out a breathy laugh and shook his head. “I’m the most lucky man in the whole fucking world.” He said and you laughed, shaking your head while finishing your skincare night routine.
Mason hugged you from behind, peppering kisses along your shoulder and neck. “I love you so much.” He whispered, and you smiled, turning around and not wasting time in kissing him properly.
Your hands found his hair and his hands found your hips, squeezing it when he felt your tongue against his. You hummed in response, pushing him closer to you whilst your hands traveled up and down caressing his back. “I love you too, Mase.” You whispered when you two parted, appreciating his beautiful features.
“Move in with me, please Y/N,” Mason pleaded you, his forehead against yours as your heart missed one beat. “I can’t live without you anymore.” His tone made you shiver, and at the moment when you noticed that he was talking about you and your daughter, all of your worries disappeared in one motion.
“Okay.” You whispered to him, smiling when he pulled away to look in your eyes. “I move in with you. We can’t live without you anymore either.” The smile he gave you made your whole night.
He started peppering kisses along your face, your cheeks, your nose, your jaw, your eyes, and all you could do was laugh. Mason laid you on bed, fitting between your legs and still kissing everywhere he could get.
“Thank you, thank you so much.” His voice was so sweet and that made you feel giddy, opening your eyes to look at his brown chocolate ones.
“Thank you Mase, for making us so happy.”
