John Chavis, born free in 1763 he was an abolitionists and Minister. He used law books to educate himself. In 1808, John Chavis opened a private school in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he taught black and white children. He was vocal leader in the abolitionist movement. His outspokenness may have cost him the allegiance of some white families. While only a few black abolitionist ministers in Virginia and North Carolina were allowed to openly express their views, the Nat Turner-led slave rebellion of August 1831 in Southampton County Virginia made such dissent unacceptable. After Turner's victorious revolt Virginia and North Carolina passed laws restricting free African Americans, mainly ministers', freedom of movement and barred their education. - Winston Kennedy -------------- The Turner revolt impacted the psyche of North American slavery to the extent that it caused a deep depression in the minds of white slave holders concerning the contempt in which they were held by the enslaved and a greater fear on the daily basis for the violence that the enslaved could visit upon them without notice. There is a saying in Haiti. I believe it is "Violence happens without the bell being rung." Chavis could no longer practice ministry, his professions in North Carolina. He became, however, more vocal in his condemnation of slavery and fought for the rights of African American citizens. Foul play may have lead to Chavis’ mysterious death in June of 1838. He was survived by his wife, and son, Anderson Chavis. --------------- 1889-1892; Wilson Library Manuscripts Department , University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; John Chavis Biography, North Carolina State University Division of Archives and History, http://www.ncsu.edu/ligon/about/history/Chavis.htm Contributor: Johnson, Tekla Ali - See more at: http://www.blackpast.org/aah/chavis-john-1763-1838#sthash.RavsRD3M.dpuf https://www.instagram.com/p/CakdC-xJNlC/?utm_medium=tumblr

On This Day In TCXPI History Marcus Garvey, "The Principles of The Universal Negro Improvement Association" In this speech given in New York City on November 25, 1922, Marcus Garvey explains the objectives of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, the organization he believed would lead the worldwide movement toward black liberation. Over five years ago the Universal Negro Improvement Association placed itself before the world as the movement through which the new and rising Negro would give expression of his feelings. This Association adopts an attitude not of hostility to other races and peoples of the world, but an attitude of self respect, of manhood rights on behalf of 400,000,000 Negroes of the world. We represent peace, harmony, love, human sympathy, human rights and human justice, and that is why we fight so much. Wheresoever human rights are denied to any group, wheresoever justice is denied to any group, there the U. N. I. A. finds a cause. And at this time among all the peoples of the world, the group that suffers most from injustice, the group that is denied most of those rights that belong to all humanity, is the black group of 400,000,000. Because of that injustice, because of that denial of our rights, we go forth under the leadership of the One who is always on the side of right to fight the common cause of humanity; to fight as we fought in the Revolutionary War, as we fought in the Civil War, as we fought in the Spanish American War, and as we fought in the war between 1914 and 1918 on the battle plains of France and of Flanders. As we fought on the heights of Mesopotamia; even so under the leadership of the U. N. I. A., we are marshaling the 400,000,000 Negroes of the world to fight for the emancipation of the race and of the redemption of the country of our fathers.

Walter Moses Burton was recognized as being the first Black elected sheriff in the United States. He also served four terms as a State Senator in Texas. Burton was born in slavery in North Carolina on August 9, 1840. He was brought to Texas from North Carolina in 1850, enslaved by a planter, Thomas Burke Burton, who owned a plantation and several large farms in Fort Bend County. At the age of 21, while still a slave, he was taught how to read and write by his owner. After the Civil War, Burton bought several large plots of land for $1,900 from his former enslaver, making him one of the wealthiest and most influential black people in Fort Bend County. In 1869, Burton was elected sheriff and tax collector of Fort Bend County. He was the first African-American elected to public office in the County. He served as Sheriff and Tax Collector until 1873, using a white deputy to arrest those who broke the law while he was in office. Along with these duties, he also served as the president of the Fort Bend County Union League. Union leagues were formed throughout to mobilize black votes for Republican candidates, to fight against violence towards Black citizens, and to campaign against re-establishing voting privileges for former Confederates. In 1873, Burton campaigned for and won a seat in the Texas Senate. He served four terms, from 1874 to 1876 in District 13, and from 1876 to 1883 in District 17. He was one of only four African-Americans to be elected to the Senate in the 19th century. Burton is best known for opposing county convict labor and helping to found Prairie View A&M University. During his time in the Senate, he championed for the education of African Americans. Among the many bills that he helped push through was one that called for the establishment of Prairie View Normal School (now Prairie View A&M University). Burton died in 1913. sources: http://www.blackpast.org/aaw/burton-walter-moses-1829-1913#sthash.Xg594045.dpuf Historically Fort Bend: WALTER MOSES BURTON, PIONEER POLITICIAN https://www.instagram.com/p/CF2UH5ulmpm/?igshid=9j3t3cxrgobg
