Coaches for a JuJitsu Program Just for Kids

With JuJitsu gaining popularity in Southern Maine, serious steps need to be taken to secure your spot within the SEO ranks.

That sounds too business-like, but reality makes it so true. Even when you are the best gym for jujitsu for kids in the Southern Maine’s market, you still want to create a “level” that informs and educates potential and existing clients.

Over the past 3 years, we have been shooting Photography, doing Graphic Design, and Video for Stonecoast’s social media and website. As a headshot photographer here in Portland Maine, I press the importance on Image Branding. You are the face of your future is what I tell my clients. I wanted to make sure that when someone walks into Stonecoast that they know who is who.

Coach Durfee has probably one of the most welcoming personalities, and the kids love it! He’s created an environment of coming to have fun (not babysit your kids), train hard and you better leave the class with some sweat on the mat. He encourages 2 classes a week and I know at least one kid who’s there 5 days a week for 2-3 classes.

With these headshots, I wanted to show this serious side, and of course the coaches welcoming personalities with a smiling image. I mean this is JuJitsu and when we think of self-defense or MMS, or if you know JuJitsu, you know it’s not all smiles on the mat. In fact, although I have never been to Coach Durfee’s adult JuJitsu gym called The Academy which is location not far away in Portland. And knowing some of the dads who’s kids do the Stonecoast program say it’s the same energy, smiles off the mat and sweat on the mat there as well.

Coach Shaun Durfee has created a, “dare I say”, self-defense program for kids that’s trains them to…… GO……when they are being bullied or randomly engage with physical violence. These kids are learning to 1) Diffuse a situation, while maintaining a self protection distance, 2) To end the threat, but not go further than necessary, 3) Amp up the self-esteem to not be someone’s victim, but to have self confidence and direction. 4) To training with Love and Respect.

The kids program is aimed at 4 years old to 16 years old, and if they train hard they can make the “black belt” in the kids program and walk into the Adult Program as an Blue Belt. From what I hear the average time for na adult to get a with no bjj kids training is about 12 years. I find that respectable and I’m sure it beats sitting on the couch bored… If you have bored time in your life…. Wish I did……

Morgan Talty is the author of the debut novel Fire Exit, available from Tin House.

Talty is a citizen of the Penobscot Indian Nation. His debut short story collection, Night of the Living Rez, won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Sue Kaufman Prize, the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize, the New England Book Award, the National Book Foundation's 5 Under 35 Honor, and was a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award, the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award, and The Story Prize. His writing has appeared in The Georgia Review, Granta, Shenandoah, TriQuarterly, Narrative, Lit Hub, and elsewhere. Talty is an assistant professor of English in Creative Writing and Native American and Contemporary Literature at the University of Maine, Orono, and he is on the faculty at the Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing as well as the Institute of American Indian Arts. He lives in Levant, Maine.
