Aloha Friday! Repost from @juansharks This is me telling these large female tigers to take it easy, there is only “Juan” of me to go around. It is so rare to see even one tiger shark theses days with population studies estimating less than 30,000 world wide. Both of these large tigers took interest with me at the same time and I have both arms out ready to redirect and go over the top of them if I needed to. In this case the one to my right just needed a little touch from my camera and the one to my left I redirected toward the one to my right. Crazy to think that a 14ft animal weighing at 1400lbs would be so cautious, calculated, non-confrontational, timid, and actually easy to redirect using the right technique. The immense beauty found underneath the water surface has a diversity that always leaves us speechless. Photo by @juansharks Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea. Their name is due to their large size, similar to some whales. Also like baleen whales, whale shark feed on plankton filtering large amounts of water to collect their meal. They are one of the only 3 species of sharks that filter feeds, along with the megamouth and the basking shark. #repost @juansharks ・・・ The Galápagos Islands in Ecuador are home to the only place known were you can document massive pregnant whale sharks. It breaks my heart to here that a huge fishing boat was caught with thousands of dead sharks on it fishing in the boarders of the Galapagos. I am glad to hear though that Ecuador is making an example out of the fisherman and enforcing their marine protected areas. Nightmare or a dream come true? For me the nightmare would be to see a ocean without sharks like this tiger shark keeping the ecosystem healthy. This massive female tiger shark has been named the "General" in our shark Id program, named in honor after one of our captains aunties. The General has been hanging out at our main survey site for the past few weeks now. As big as she is she is still very shy but her presence always demands respect. This was shot during a epic pelagic dive with with @oneoceandiving yesterday.
