I haven’t done a #struisemonday in months, and for a moment I was wondering if I had made a mistake in going for one today... First up was Tom8, a relatively flat not dry Saison with tomatoes - worth the experimental try (poging) but I’ll definitely pass in the future. Then I pulled out this 2019 edition Kill & Destroy IPA, and after it poured flatter than Tom8, I wondered if I should just end the night early. Yet I knew patience was needed for an 18% ABV beer, and patience paid off - just loved this Bourbon barrel aged IPA, from the sweet balanced bourbon alcohol, the dried tropical fruit juice, the dry wood, the cinnamon spice dancing on my tongue, the lingering bitter dried citrus peel, to ... . To tell you the truth, I wasn’t so excited about this cask strength XXXX Quadrupel 2016 Grappa Reserva after first opening it... a bit flat quite strong red vinous alcohol and cardboard musty woody tannins, but after taking a sip my thoughts swung to the better side, to thicker malts, chewy toffee, milk chocolate and nuts, not to mention the spice, mineral salts, and woody bitters, among other things. Glad I grabbed a bottle. Thumbs up. Been a long time since I experienced a Struise Monday... The first whiff and memories of those university years in San Diego (tequila), the second whiff and images of caramel ice cream sauce float by (pun intended?), the third whiff and nuts - you name it, dry and green, round and almond shaped (read to the tune of AC/DC’s Big Balls), all present, forth whiff and who cares... The Struise Brouwers’ 2 Reserva, a wheat ale ripened for 4 years on rum barrels. I have to say I prefer one of their dark BA stouts, but I must admit I’m happy enough. This weekend, someone I know said this 17% ABV Zombination III Urbi et Orbi, a (massive?) stout aged on Octomore (Bruichladdich) Scotch whisky barrels, wasn’t a beer. Now, I don’t know what the various brewers think, those who joined the Struise Brouwers when they brewed this abomination (zombination?), but when I first arrived to Belgium 17+ years ago, I didn’t think Gueuze or Flemish Red’s were beers. So, as I sip this sweet pitch black whisky-peated, vinous plum Porto’d (and much more...) baby, I smile as my definition of beer is once again pushed beyond “traditional” boundaries. This Cuvée Delphine Vintage 2013 from the Struise Brouwers, their Black Albert aged on Four Roses Bourbon barrels, was just lovely. I don’t care about any comparisons with other vintages or other beers, this was simply delicious. Punt (nl). (Am I whacked? Just... lovely... being damned every-so-often is just... lovely... dark chocolate turning into cold hot fudge... some coffee... some subtle prune fruits and nuts adding the usual Struise balance... lovely yet still typical, then as this 13% ABV Black Damnation XIV Talisman (Black Albert aged in Talisker Scotch whisky barrel) warmed up the volatile whisky essence became more pronounced, introducing also some peaty spice with hints of the North Sea's salts; for the rest, just lovely (I love the multiple refills of this tiny 8 cl glass)... dark chocolate turning into cold hot fudge... some coffee... ... This 11% ABV Vanilla Bourbon Dream 2013 (Pannepeut barrel aged for 3 years in Woodward reserve bourbon barrels with 5 or so Madagascar vanilla beans) by the Struise Brouwers) was one to let sit and dream about instead of bulldozing though with 10 other beers on a beer-packed Saturday afternoon; when cool the vanilla took precedence, though as it warmed up the bourbon barrel added more and more color to the base bitter milky acidic roasted chocolate malts and Struise prunes.
