Location : Rest And Be Thankful The Rest and Be Thankful forms part of the A83 which runs from Tarbert to Campbelltown. The section sits roughly 10 miles after Tarbert and marks the highest point of the road. The road is named for the stone that was inscribed with the words Rest and be Thankful by the soldiers who built the original military road, the creation of which was ordered by General wade during the Jacobite Rebellion. The stone however fell into ruin and was replaced with a plaque. The name can also be attributed to the climb out of Glen Croe, It’s long and steep climb would force travellers to rest at the top and be thankful the hardest section was over. The now infamous road was completed in 1941. But the road has been plagued by issues since. Issues due in large part to the location of the road. Sitting in Glen Core it is surrounded by mountains, such as The Cobbler (Ben Arthur), also known as the Arrochar Alps. And also in part to that lovely Scottish weather This photo was taken roughly 9 months since the last major landslide in August 2020 after heavy rainfall, which destroyed a section of the road. Only to be followed by another in September 2020, having only been reopened for 5 days. Work has been ongoing since then to repair the road, which is now open in a single lane, light-controlled manner, and also to implement landslide protection measures. After years of concerns, alternative routes are now being looked into, and plans are being considered to open an alternative road. Although it has it issues, one thing is for certain it is a beautiful spot. Location: Inverary Pier The Vital Spark, a clyde puffer, first built in Hull in 1944, has had 4 names during its life. She was first known as Vic 72, then the Elseda before being known as the Eilean Eisdeal, and finally being renamed as Vital Spark after Inverary writer Neil Munro’s stories and BBC TV show based on them, in 2006. She was initially built as a store carrier. The boat was then motorised in 1969 and became a cargo vessel, which remained one of her main functions until being withdrawn from service in 1994. She was, at one time, also used around islands for dredging coal form other sunken vessels. Vital Spark is registered with National Historic Ships UK, due to it being one of a few puffers still in use, and is deemed to be of national importance. It now currently sits at Inverary Pier, located on Loch Fyne. Inverary Pier at the moment is centre of a fundraising effort. The pier has been privately owned for over 20 years, but now the community group Inspire Inverary along with the community council have the opportunity to bring the ownership back to the community. It I the communities hopes that ownership would allow work to be carried out to enable the pier to open to the public once again, to enjoy a walk along the pier or simply just to be able to launch from the pier. To be able to do this, a fundraising campaign was kicked off in September 2020, through a donation box located at the start of the pier and through a GoFundMe page. Location: Blackness Castle Built in 1440, Blackness Castle sits on the South shore of the Firth of Forth. Residing on the shore and due to its long narrow shape the castle has often been referred to as 'The Ship That Never Sailed'. The castle sits overlooking the Firth of Forth, along with the Famous Bridges; Queenferry Crossing, Forth Road Bridge and the Forth Bridge. In recent years, the castle has featured on screen a few times, most notably in Mary Queen of Scots, Outlaw King, and Outlander. Wow! I have now spent just over a year with my D3500. So here is one of the very first photos I took with the D3500. And a photo from my first outing and the notorious wind tripod incident. Strange year it's been. I had imagined of going out places and going wee road trips with my pal (when he could be bothered to put up with me)... Well that didn't happen, did it. #GaelicWordOfTheDay : Remembrance Day = Latha a' Chuimhneachaidh Today is #RemembranceSunday with Wednesday being #ArmisticeDay. this photo was taken of a small memorial in Port Ellen, Islay. The annual march past the cenotaph was worlds away from what it is normally, which is understandable. However year after year, we are reminded that the day is growing closer that #WWII is no longer going to be first hand accounts, but mere stories passed down. We unfortunately no longer have any #WWI veterans and the same will soon be said for WWII. My fear is that there are still people out there who deny the atrocities that happened, or those out there who have not learned from our ancestors what that level of hatred can do to the world. Who knows, maybe the world will learn from history rather than peoples first hand accounts. #GaelicWordOfTheDay : #Balloon = Bailiùn #Glasgowcitycentre is not only home to an iconic shopping street, it is also home to the Glasgow #CityCentreMuralTrail. The first #mural was created in 2008 through Glasgow city council to breathe some life back into old or empty buildings. It wasn't until 2014 that Mural Trail was officially launched and has been growing ever since. There are 29 currently Murals dotted around Glasgow City Centre, you can download a map to help you fin them all, and the trail was recognised as a top attraction by #TripAdvisor this year. Before the pandemic you could also pay for a guided walk through the trail. It's a great way for locals and tourists alike to see the city whisky also recognising the amazing talent of the artists. I hope that I will be able to get back again soon and follow the trail myself. The Mural below is "The World's Most Economical Taxi" created by the artist Rouge One. It lies just hidden away down #MitchellStreet. #GaelicWordOfTheDay : #Lighthouse = Taigh-solais A staple of Turnberry, Turnberry Lighthouse sits between the 9th and 10th hole of the Aisla course. It was built on what is believed to be the moat of Turnberry Castle, thought to be the birthplace of Robert the Bruce. It was built in 1873, making it the oldest man made structure on Turnberry course, bar the castle ruins. It beamed its first signal on the 30th of August, 1878. Flashing once every 12 seconds, as all UK lighthouses do, switching to automated flashing in 1986. Another sunset aside Aisla Craig. (Gaelic: Creag Ealasaid) Aisla Craig sits approximately halfway between the traditional emigrations route from Belfast to Glasgow and was given many nicknames over the years. The small island is home of one of only two sources f Microgranite, which is used to make curling stones, with the last harvest being in 2013.
