...im not going to be able to finish subnautica below zero. its just such a far cry from the beauty and curiosity of the first game that its kind of offensive. heck, its a far cry from the first early access release version.
i liked cozy research experience. i liked alan being a prick from the get-go. i liked how the game didn't hold your hand in the early days. i liked the hints at how the story would go (live khaara sample ends up shot off to the research satellite, find and befriend sea emperors to fix it, alan gets a warper body along the way; i looked up story spoilers for the final release version and it IS SO BAD, people say the first story would have been bad but it would have been better than THIS). they changed it all for brownie points and just ended up creating forspoken long before forspoken itself became a meme.
the only good part about the game was the base building updates, but they put a lot of those back into og subnautica so there is honestly no reason to play below zero except possibly bile fascination.
if the true subnautica 2 they're announcing this year ends up being less like 1 and more like below zero then i give up.

back to going through my backlog, finally going to finish subnautica below zero after dropping it halfway through early access because i was disappointed in the way it was going.
not even two minutes in and the main character throws out a line on the same level as "did i just move stuff with my freakin mind???" and im worried.

Al-In.  Or Al-An?  Or just Alan?  I don’t remember how he spelled it, all I know is that I’ve got a new A.I. boyfriend.
no seriously, the dude tells you flat out that he wants you to stay with him forever, what else am I supposed to do with this information.

WHALE, WHALE, WHALE, WHAT HAVE WE HERE?
one of two leviathans currently in the game, and I love them, and you can ride on their backs, and I wanted to cry

to be fair to angry people on steam confused about sam and robin’s relationship, “we shared a womb” is a weird friggin line and i do not think any human being would ever actually say that to their sibling.
although to go against said angry steam users, if they kept playing and paid attention they would soon see that robin/al-an is the canon ship of this game.
at the end of the day, though, its just steam being angry.

subnautica has me trained because the second i hit a void in below zero i about-faced and noped away.  even though ghost leviathans don’t spawn in below zero.
also, no joke, the first time i came across one of the bonesharks swimming around the cargo rocket island, my brain went, “WAIT I KNOW THAT JACKASS”  not sure why my brain went there but okay.

im doing some speculations on subnautica: below zero’s story
one of the most fun parts of subnautica’s early access was trying to piece together the story when all there was basically was “you crash land, there’s fish, you need to leave but you can’t, and at the very end there’s a big squid turtle.”  just trying to connect all the dots and etc.
so i’m going to do all my story speculations right now, come back in a few months and we’ll see how close i was.
also contains actual spoilers, so proceed carefully
so what bit of story is confirmed is: you are robin, you are a xenolinguist, you get locked out of an alien facility that says your name, you end up lost at sea after your base gets destroyed, you swim around and talk to your sister, you find an A.I. that wants you to stay with him forever and you download him to your head, you send your sister a biological sample of yourself, your sister and her boss get freaked out over the sample, the A.I.’s name turns out to be Al-An and he gives you the specs to build him a new robot vessel.  that’s the definite voice-acted bits of story so far.
there are other bits and pieces that pop up, such as a dialogue that plays when you pick up enzyme 42 from the sea emperor.  this dialogue (coupled with another dialogue that played randomly for me, which again had your sister trying to figure out what the hell happened to your sample)  implies that everyone on the floating station caught the khaara bacterium.  and seeing how Al-An tampers with your sample before you send it off (he states that he’s hiding his presence in the scan, but idk you guys), i’m pretty sure he somehow added the khaara to it.  so i’m pretty sure your A.I. buddy is going to betray you, its wheatley all over again.
someone else also found this really confusing bit of dialogue where marguriete (sp?, i’m just gonna say marge from now on) shows up with a dead snow stalker, bitches about stuff, says she wants your alien tablet, then kicks you out of her base.  so i’m assuming you need the alien tablet to get into the facility, but marge being as awful as she is won’t let you.
so now why do you need in the facility?  my guess is that’s where the sea emperor is, its been there the whole time.  and you must free it for the enzyme to save your sister.
so thats my speculation so far.

already makin new friends in subnautica below zero.
so far its....ok?  I mean, it’s pretty barebones, so don’t go into it expecting content on the level of the original game; if you want to support the devs and watch the game grow, THAT should be your motivation for buying it now.  there’s a story, but I really hope we are getting the cliffnotes version right now because that story just breezes right by, even if you’re taking your time.  there’s a lot of voice-acting, which makes the game feel much less lonely than the first one and I don’t know if I like that or not yet.
BUT the new flora and fauna are astounding, and i’m excited to see where they’re going with the story.

went back through my old subnautica tag and its actually kind of sad how high my hopes were for below zero.
to the point where i am going to install it and force myself to complete it.  after finishing the first game again.
also on the topic of subnautica 3 rumors, i saw an article from around below zero’s full release talking about some ideas they were throwing around.  they wanted it to be a thematic sequel rather than a literal one.  they were thinking about making a game that played like subnautica but took place in a human body.  if they go through with this, then i have no hopes at all for subnautica 3 to be good.

there was a job posting for someone to work as a senior narrative designer on subnautica 3.
i should feel more excited but below zero was such a step back from the first game (and i say that as someone who was super hyped and loved al-an and all that jazz), like they looked at everything everyone loved and hated about the first game and put emphasis on the “hated” parts and toned back on the “loved” parts.  if they do that again for subnautica 3, i shudder to think of how bad it will be.
then again, they could learn from their mistakes, keep the lonesome aquatic atmosphere, go back to exploration-based story and away from dialogue-based story, maybe add a touch of intentional horror to spice up the unintentional horror?  it could happen?  even in this day and age of game development where devs tend to spite their fans for saying criticisms about their creations instead of using them to grow?

I wanted to post a video here of Subnautica’s ending, but they were all so clickbaity and cringey that I decided to make one myself.  Even if I do have potato graphics.
OBVIOUSLY SPOILERS BUT STILL YA KNOW.

I made a Sea Emperor Sugar Scrub!
I used half a cup of coconut cane sugar, bright blue sugar sparkles (they’re the glittery bits in the photo, they didn’t show up blue here but i promise you they are blue in person), extra virgin olive oil (kept adding it spoonful by spoonfuul until i got the shown consistency), and a few drops of soap scent (i used an “after rain” type scent).  made my skin feel real nice and smooth!
side effects may include using flowery, complicated prose to describe how precursors tried to force eggs to hatch.
