Down a Rabbit Hole I Went

I screwed up. I didn't think that using an ancient language on a piece of tumblr merch was necessary but I forgot what site I was on :) . This is tumblr, of course it has to be in linguistically accurate cuneiform. I went and hired an expert on Ancient Semitic Languages and Cultures. There aren't as many as you'd think that are willing to translate text for an internet gag so I'm so happy I found Paul.

Notes on the translation from the translator:

I used the ventive suffix on the imperative "give (rib+am)" which is a special feature of Akkadian that indicates the motion of direction. It makes it a little bit more authentic. The longer version actually includes the words "to me (ana iasim)", but a typical Akkadian speaker probably wouldn't have needed to say that.

Also, for the word "money" I used the Sumerian (KUG.BABBAR) instead of spelling out the Akkadian, because that was a common feature in Akkadian scribal writing. For the font I was happily surprised that Google has a Cuneiform font, so not only is it correct but it looks pretty neat too. Right now you can buy both versions in the shop but cuneiform version won't ship for a week or so as I have to order new stock with the new design.

Okay so hello! I managed to get the 4th tier bundle of the graphic novel and I'm so grateful. But it was only out of pure luck that my bf managed to get the email nearly ten minutes before most. While I get why the brand itself (Sleep Token as a brand, not as the musicians behind it) would drop something like this all cryptically, I really wish they wouldn't so we'd have time to prepare more. But that's not that big of an issue to me right now.

My bigger issue is that there is a shit ton of merch that's often overpriced as hell depending on where you get it from and the only thing that comforts me is that it would be, as far as I know, extremely rare that the band themselves would be all that involved if at ALL with the pricing and what *kind* of merch it is. Their music easily reflects that they (especially Vessel and II, hopefully III and IV are more involved in the next album<3) are a quality over quantity band like you mentioned, so I definitely think this is more on RCA.

After they switched to RCA, Idk it seems like the merch/tickets side of things kinda got fucked? And, not to be delusional, I'd imagine Vessel isn't too happy abt that lol but I genuinely think they don't have control over this. The graphic novel is clearly different tho. Although I do wish they'd picked anyone but Sumerian lol /half-joking.

So, please don't listen to anons who think these grown men need to be defended against valid opinions and/or criticisms that are worded well, such as your post. Take care of yourself and if you don't want to keep this topic going in your blog you can simply ignore this or answer it privately.

I agree. The problem is that whether it's the band or the label making the decisions, it still reflects on the band because they are the face of the brand Sleep Token. RCA is great for exposure and opportunities, but they're also extremely exploitative, as any other label. I'm very much aware of that. And I'm very much aware that they have their hands in it. BUT it STILL reflects on Sleep Token's image. I didn't think I'd have to explicitly discuss the exploitative structures of the music industry to voice a critique about one singular band. 🙃 This is not directed at you, btw. It just felt like I was holding a gun to Vessel's head and told him what to do and insulted his entire family in the process to some. 😭

You can very much love and support artists and still critique their business practices (and I don't think I was being rude or unfair with my wording), especially when you want them to thrive in the future.

Anyways, thank you for being a reasonable human being. I've seen too many rude and condescending messages the past week, so I really appreciate your message! 😭🫶

Someone said they don't owe us anything because they're giving us music. Really? They're giving you music? Because unless I've missed something Bad Omens aren't paying for my Spotify subscription and they didn't gift me all the physical copies of their work I own. They're in a position where they're able to have a full time career in music and not just as a side hustle because of their fans. Without people buying the music, the tickets and the merch, they're left doing a regular ass job like anyone else.

Do they owe any of us anything personally? No, but I don't think anyone of sound mind is expecting them to be on socials constantly interacting and befriending anyone. There's a difference between something being parasocial and being shown gratitude. Or are all the other artists out there thanking fans, and in some cases literally stating that they wouldn't be where they are without them, crossing a line and being weird? And I'm not even just talking about the last few days, other artists I follow show constant gratitude about live shows, releases, all sorts, and they still manage to sell me a whole lot of stuff I don't need without it feeling like that's all their fans are to them.

Another anon said that maybe they're busy. Yep, busy promoting Jesse Cash's side hustle, and yet completely disregarding their own fans.

Obviously they've got to sell things as part of the game, but part of the game is also having some humility and gratitude towards your fans. I know they're guys but they need to learn that sometimes foreplay is important, but it seems all they want to do is fuck.

How can some of you not see that they're happy enough to use social media to call people out on being fucking annoying, but they can't bring themselves to show any thanks. If they can't handle their growth then they should have gotten help with that, not taken it out on the fans. They might not be thrilled with the way Sumerian handle things, but the fans didn't sign the contract, that's on them.

And yes, I know they're grateful at their live shows, but 4m+ people aren't attending those. Just like 4m+ people aren't being problematic within the fanbase. And yet 4m+ people are being disregarded for the part they've played in their success.

People need to stop accepting and justifying their shitty behaviour, or thinking their silence on anything good happening to them is reasonable.

There's a symbiotic relationship between artists and their fans, neither exists without the other.

this isn't in defense at all, but man I don't think anyone does black friday sales anymore :( it's been shit anywhere I've tried to shop (except Sumerian Records, to which I had already had a big purchase the week before. everything was half off for BF next week. death.)

Oh no, you're good. The only band that I can think of that really do black friday sales still is MIW but that was just solely on their tour merch they put up recently. I just needed to do that rant because I've been sitting on it for a whileeee, haha. For Sumerian, I don't really buy from there besides stuff from Hot Topic, as I had a bad experience with them + they're a shit company from what I've seen / heard.

After almost 6 months of near silence from Sumerian Records, they’re home 😭

Edit: they’ve changed distributors since all of this happened, but be cautious ordering from Sumerian Records! I’ve still received no formal communication from them about why my IN STOCK records took 6 months to get to me. I got a mild “oops, something happened” and that’s it. I’ve had to get info about the situation from fucking Reddit. If you want merch, PLEASE support bands on their own webstores when you can!

If it’s not related to BO this is the second time Sumerian has played with my feelings. First the Japanese release with the same loading screen and now as far as I’m concerned, the BO merch website is not related to the record label so maybe they’re trying to bait people with whatever happens on the 28th.

Super stoked to have ordered some bad omens merch on the restock day. I am wondering why I felt the need to pay extra for a vinyl when I could have got a different version from Sumerian for less (the reason is, I have ADHD and very much blanked on the availability of the other versions despite some of them being on my Pinterest wish-list 😅🫣) but green is my favourite colour so I’m good with that. A lil treat for achieving my competencies at work to get a bump from next month. A lil treat for keeping up this whole adulting game full time, tbh.
