Surah Yusuf, 56-57: Are Good Deeds Rewarded in This Life Too?

Is there reward for good deeds in this world apart from reward in the Hereafter?

Praise be to Allah.

Yes, Allah has promised the believer who does righteous deeds reward in this world, as well as the greater reward which awaits him in the Hereafter. Allah says: {مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْرَهُم بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ} 'Translation' {Whoever works righteousness -whether male or female- while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)} [al-Nahl:97] Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Allah guarantees to those who believe and do righteous deeds reward in this world with a good life, and Paradise on the Day of Resurrection". The rewards in this life for some good deeds have been mentioned in the Qur'aan and Sunnah. These include the following: 1. Spending for the sake of Allah Allah says: {وَمَا أَنفَقْتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ يُخْلِفُهُ ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ} 'Translation' {and whatsoever you spend of anything (in Allah's Cause), He will replace it. And He is the Best of providers} [Saba' from the verse:39]. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: «Allah says: 'O son of Adam, spend and I will spend on you» (Narrated by al-Bukhaari [4407]; Muslim [993]). Spending for the sake of Allah is one of the means of increasing one's provision. 2. Being easy-going with a debtor who is facing hardship, concealing a Muslim's faults and helping him. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: " «Whoever relieves a Muslim of some distress in this world, Allah will relieve him of some distress on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is easy-going with a debtor who is facing hardship, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and in the Hereafter. And whoever conceals a Muslim's faults, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah will help His slave so long as His slave helps his brother» (Narrated by Muslim [2699]). 3. Being humble for the sake of Allah. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: «Wealth never decreases because of charity. No person shows forbearance but Allah will honour him and no one is humble for the sake of Allah but Allah will raise him in status» (Narrated by Muslim [2588]). Al-Mubaarakfoori said: "raise him in status" means in this world and in the Hereafter" (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi [6/150]). 4. Upholding the ties of kinship It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: «Whoever would like to have his provision increased or his lifespan extended, let him uphold the ties of kinship» (Narrated by al-Bukhaari [1961]; Muslim [2557]) . With regard to the extension of one's lifespan there is a well-known scholarly discussion, which is that lifespans and provisions are decreed and cannot increase or decrease. {لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ ۚ إِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهُمْ فَلَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً ۖ وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ} 'Translation' {when their term comes, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment)} [Yoonus from the verse:49]. The scholars came up with several answers to this issue, the most correct of which: That this refers to an increase of blessing during one's lifetime, being guided to do good deeds and to make use of one's times in ways that will be of benefit in the Hereafter and to make the most of his time for the sake of Allah. The second suggestion is that it refers to what the angels see and what is in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz, etc. For the angels see in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz that a person's lifespan will be sixty years, unless he upholds the ties of kinship, in which case another forty years will be added to his life. Allah knows what will happen to him in that regard. This is the meaning of the words: {يَمْحُو اللَّـهُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَيُثْبِتُ} 'Translation' {Allah blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills)} [al-Ra'd from the verse:39]. With regard to what Allah knows and what He has already decreed, nothing can be added to that; such a thing is impossible. With regard to what people see, they see that it is increased. This is what is meant by the hadith. (Sharh Muslim [16/114]) And Allah knows best.

During times of hardship, it’s essential to remember there are effective ways to deal with any difficulty.

Here are 7 practical steps to help you face any difficult situation

Salah. Make sure you stick to praying on time – 5 times a day. Never miss a salah and do your best to pray each Salah with sincerity as if it’s your last salah in this world.

Read Quran. This Quran is so beautiful that no matter what difficulties you face you’ll find solace in it.

Make Dua. Especially the dua for removing anxiety.

Give Sadaqah. Give lots of charity, as much as you can, because it helps push away hardship. And if you can’t give money, even kind words or physical sadaqah can do (i.e. helping people physically or emotionally).

Set Goals and Have Vision. Don’t let shaytaan play with you and keep replaying the video of your hardship in your mind over and over again, move on! Set new goals, new projects, and remember you’re with Allah, nothing should stop you!

Wake up Early. Wake up before fajr and work on your ideas and projects, or simply read Qur’an. Getting busy before day break is a definite way to move away from your hardship and overcome challenges. Get most of your ideas/work done in these early hours, these are blessed hours.

Hardship is Not Lost. Remember, Allah will never forget the injustice/hardship you faced, so don’t worry about seeking revenge or trying to get justice

In the end, I pray that Allah (Subhanahu Wa’Tala) removes all your ordeals and hardships, blesses you all with a good life and helps you remember Him day and night, for “Verily, with remembrance of Allah, do hearts find rest”. (Surah Ar-Ra’d , verse 28)

This life is not the life we’ll get justice in. If this was the case, there would be no need for a Day of Judgement or Akhira.

This life is a life of duality; there’s good and bad, justice and injustice, mercy and oppression, love and hate, truth and falsehood..etc. Your role in this life is to live your life according to how Allah (Subhanahu Wa’Tala) asked you to do, seeking His pleasure, avoiding His anger. And Allah (Subhanahu Wa’Tala) promises you in many places in the Quran, that if you do just that, He’ll give you a ‘good’ life. Allah says in the Quran:

“Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, verily, to him will We give a new Life, a life that is good and pure and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions.” (Surat Al-Nahl, Verse 97)

“He that is righteous and patient,- never will Allah suffer the reward to be lost, of those who do right.” (Surat Yousef, Verse 90)

Our Lord, pour out on us patience and cause us to die as Muslim. (Quran: Surah Al Araf, Ayat 126)

And completed My favor upon you.(Quran: Surah Al Maidah Ayat 3)

The Good Deeds and bad deeds are not the same. return evil with good.(quran: Surah Fussilat, Ayat 34)

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.(Quran: Surah Al e Imran, Ayat 103)

And seek help in patience and prayer.(Quran: Surah Al Baqarah, Ayat 45)

But They plan, and Allah Plans, And Allah is best of Planners. (Quran: Surah Al Anfal, Ayat 30)

And ease my task for me. (Quran: Surah Taha, Ayat 26)

Whoever does righteousness, male or female while believing, We will grant them a happy life. (Quran: Surah An Nahl, Ayat 97)

And say my Lord increase me in my knowledge. (Quran: Surah Taha, Ayat 114)

You preffer the life of this world, While the hearafter is better and more lasting. (Quran: Surah Al Ala, Ayat 16)

And who despairs from the Mercy of his Lord, Except those astray?. (Quran: Surah Al Hijr, Verse 56)

Do good with your parents.(Quran: Surah Al Isra, Verse 23)

And say my Lord increase me in my knowledge. (Quran: Surah Taha, Ayat 114)

Did he not realize that Allah is watching. (Quran: Surah Al Alaq, ayat 14)

Fear Allah, surely Allah is aware of all your actions. (Quran: Surah Al Hashr, Verse 18)

So let not this present life deceive you. (Quran: Surah Fatir, Ayat 5)

Take care of your souls.(Quran: Surah Al Maidah, Verse 105)

But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.( Quran: Surah Al Baqarah, Ayat 165)

O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful. (Quran: Surah Al Imran, Verse 130)

He (Solomon) said, "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower." (Quran: Surah Sad, Ayat 35)

And if Allah touches you with harm, no one can remove it but He. and if He touches you with good, then He is able to do all things.(Quran: Surah Al Anam, Verse 6)

Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication. (Quran: Surah Ibrahim, Verse 39)

And Allah is the best of Sustainers. (Quran: Surah Al Jumuah, Ayat 11)

Indeed, Prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing. (Quran: Surah Al Ankabut, Verse 45)

And He is with you wherever you are. (Quran: 57:4)

Say "whos is lord of the havens and earth?" Say "Allah". (Quran: Surah Ar Rad, Ayat 16)

Sufficient for us is Allah, and the best Disposer of affairs. ( Quran: Surah Al e Imran, Verse 173)

No person knows what he will earn tomorrow. (Surah Luqman, Ayat 34)

And it is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. (Quran: Surah Al Anbiya, Ayat 33)

And we have certainely beautified the nearest heaven with starts. (Quran: Surah Al Mulk, Ayat 5)

And to recite the Qur'an." And whoever is guided is only guided for himself; and whoever strays - say, "I am only of the warners." (Quran: Surah Al Anam, Ayat 92)

And put thy trust in Allah, and enough is Allah as a disposer of affairs.(Quran: Surah Al Ahzab, Ayat 3)

And ever is your Lord, Seeing. (Quran: Surah Al Furqan, Ayat 20)

If you are grateful, I will give you more. (Quran: Surah Ibrahim, Ayat 7)

So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it pay attention, that you may receive Mercy. (Quran: Surah Al Araf, Ayat 204)

The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception. (Quran: Surah Al e Imran, Ayat 185)

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, A guidance for those conscious of Allah. (Quran: Surah Al Baqarah, Ayat 2)

Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. (Quran: Surah Al Insan, Ayat 30)

Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. (Quran: Surah Yunus, Ayat 55)

So wait patiently (O Muhammad SAW) for the Decision of your Lord, for verily, you are under Our Eyes. (Quran: Surah At Tur, Ayat 48)
