The Monas Hieroglyphica, or Hieroglyphic Monad, is an esoteric symbol invented and designed by John Dee – Elizabeth I of England’s Magus and Court Astrologer – circa 1564. The Hieroglyphic embodies Dee’s vision of the unity of the Cosmos and is a composite of various esoteric and astrological symbols. The Hieroglyphic Monad consists of the composition, from top to bottom, of a figure that synthesizes the traditional symbols of astronomy and cosmology: the moon (crescent), the sun (circle), the four Elements (cross), the fire (two semicircles). We find the numbers 1 (the circle), 2 (the line), 3 (the cross: two perpendicular lines intersecting on a point) and 4 (the four segments of the cross). There are also the seven -then discovered- planets: the Sun and the Moon as well as Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn. ☿ This is the latest one I crafted, as usual, upon order, entirely by hand and from sustainable, recycled Sterling Silver. @caroll.noxatra immortalised, on film, this little corner of my Atelier.
