Suzanne Wilton, an escapee of Lydia Quigley’s house of ‘sin and corruption’. She used to be ashamed, afraid to even try to rebuild her life, but when Amelia decides to take a chance and move on with Violet Cross it’s clear Amelia’s mother will need help.  Slowly Suzanne is beginning to find hope, although she planned to be nothing more than a helper, a daughter in all but name, she is far more, finding herself falling, and falling fast, for Florence Scanwell, but can she help Florence forgive herself?

Henry Mansfield Cannon Memorial Chapel
36 Westhampton Way
Built, 1929
Architect, Charles M. Robinson
VDHR 127-0364-009
Tumblr media
December 2019
A masterpiece of Late Gothic Revival nestled away on the UR campus.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — front/north façade
Rising from a concrete foundation veneered with concrete incised to look like cut stones, the walls are constructed of steel frame clad with red brick laid in Flemish bond. The entries have original doors of paneled wood with iron detailing. A large rose window highlights the primary façade and Gothic pointed-arch and lancet windows are found on the remaining walls. The window openings on the east and west elevations have stained glass replacement windows with concrete tracery. The front-gabled roof is sheathed with variegated slate tiles.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — detail of pinnacles
A rectangular apse at the back of the chapel also has a slate-covered gabled roof. The eaves of the roof are trimmed by brown metal gutters that drain to brown metal downspouts. Rooftop elements are restricted to parapets that mask portions of the roof on the front and back walls of the building. A rich deployment of original stone and molded and cast concrete decorative elements is a character-defining feature of the building. Pinnacles at the east and west ends of the primary façade, window and door surrounds, drip molds, belt courses, and accents on brick buttresses all were constructed using molded concrete.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — showing quoins & quatrefoils
Concrete quoins of varying sizes are located at the edges of walls and around some windows and doors. Other concrete features include decorative reliefs and sculptural elements in foliate and other patterns above doors and windows and at the corners of walls on all sides of the building. Other concrete features include decorative reliefs and sculptural elements in foliate and other patterns above doors and windows and at the corners of walls on all sides of the building; these typically mimic quatrefoil or other designs found in Gothic tracery.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — trumpet-playing angel relief
Quatrefoil ornaments flank the pointed arch. Above the pointed arch, a stone carving that reads “Cannon Memorial” in stylized Gothic lettering spans the entry bay, and is flanked by trumpet-playing angel reliefs. This name block is topped with a gabled parapet that has three foil arch reliefs. To either side of the entry, recessed bays include small windows with stained glass panels and concrete drip molds and quoin surrounds.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — rose window detail
On the main block, the primary façade features symmetrical composition, with a centered entry block on the first story, a rose window above the entry, double foil arch and opening in the gable, and a cross on top of the gable. Set within a slightly projecting bay, the rose window has twelve foil arch traceries radiating from the central circle. The stained glass was installed in the rose window during the mid-1980s.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — entry bay detail
On the west wall, an entry bay projects from the fourth bay, beneath the stained glass window. Accessed via a brick wheelchair ramp, the entry is similar in style and ornamentation to the primary entry on the north façade. Double-leaf, original wood doors are surmounted by a molded concrete surround and pointed arch with a large cinquefoil design. Above the pointed arch, a gabled concrete parapet bears a centered blank shield flanked by leaf ornamentation. At each corner is a relief of a kneeling angel.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — rear/south façade
The rear wall of the chapel has battered brick buttresses at each corner, each with concrete accents. A sloped, slightly projecting bay topped with concrete incised to look like stone is between the buttresses. A concrete water table extends the length of the wall. Immediately below the water table, at the ground level are two vents and one small window, each with a simple concrete surround. The window appears to be original to the building, while the vents likely were added at a later date to accommodate mechanical systems.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — memorial garden
A memorial garden is on the east side of Cannon Chapel. A brick and stone wall encloses the garden, with iron gates placed on the north and south walls. On the west wall, a wood gate leads to the neighboring Wilton Center. The landscaped area features brick and stone walkways, benches, ornamental plantings, and a central fountain. Low wing walls extend from the base of each buttress on the chapel’s east wall. Each wing wall is composed of brick and stone block and is topped with a concrete planter. The memorial garden is intended for the scattering of ashes.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — nave
Cannon Memorial Chapel is a nave plan with a center aisle, small side aisles, and an alter area. The narthex and small rooms to either side are contained within the entry block on the north façade. The narthex features original paneled woodwork, historic-period tile flooring, and a plaster ceiling featuring a raised geometric pattern. Double leaf, paneled wood doors lead to the nave. Within the nave and to either side of the narthex doors are single-leaf wood doors. The east door opens to a prayer room, while the west door leads to the chapel guild room.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — nave
The interior of the chapel features a soaring, vaulted timber ceiling supported by arch braces. Wood pews flank the aisles. Carpet covers the aisles while the remaining flooring is wood. The space is lit by stained glass windows on all sides. A cast concrete molding runs around the entire interior space just below the bottom edges of the pointed arch windows. The area below the molding has been painted to look like blocks of stone in varying shades of tan. Raised wood panels with molded surrounds are beneath each window and include a name plate with a dedication for each window. Above the molding are white plastered walls.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — detail of stained glass windows, east side — “Law and Justice” (left), “Commerce and Industry (right)
The theme for the windows is “Let All the Universe Praise Thee, O God.” From north to south, the stained glass windows on the east wall are titled “Praise” (installed 1985), “Law and Justice” (1986), “Commerce and Industry” (1986), “Creation” (1987), “Prophets” (1986), “Incarnation” (1986), and “Redemption” (1986). From north to south on the west wall, the windows are titled “Prayer” (1985), “The Sciences” (1985), “Art and Humanities” (1987), “University Window” (1986), “Hope and Renewal” (1985), “Pentecost” (1986), and “Resurrection” (1985).

(Stetson University) — Rudolf von Beckerath, of Beckerath organs, plays the 'house organ' at the home of Music School professors Paul and Janice Jenkins on North Sans Souci in DeLand, Florida — 1961
In 1936, a Hammond electric organ was installed in the chapel. In 1961, the present pipe organ was constructed. The German organ builder, Rudolph von Beckerath, prepared the drawings, and the University's music director, Dr. John White, and the University organist, Professor Suzanne Kidd (later, Bunting) guided negotiations. The organ pieces were fabricated in Hamburg, Germany, then shipped to Richmond in 36 crates. Three German workmen from Hamburg installed the instrument in nine weeks under White’s and Bunting’s supervision. Von Beckerath supervised the final installation and voiced the pipes.
Tumblr media
December 2019 — pipe organ
The third Beckerath organ in the United States, it has 1,200 pipes (40 ranks) of tin, lead and wood, the largest measuring 16 feet, the shortest being smaller and thinner than a soda straw. A direct connection between each key and each pipe creates the sound. Robert Noehren played the dedicatory organ concert on Feb. 9, 1962. Within a short time the von Beckerath organ became known to organists in Europe and America as one of the finest installations in the country. The organ is included in “A Collection of Noted Organs and Organists of the World,” by H.J. Winterton.

(Rocket Werks RVA Postcards) — University of Richmond campus, circa 1915
The original conceptual plans for the University of Richmond campus were conceived by Ralph Adams Cram, a Richmond architect and principal of the firm Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. Cram had extensive experience designing institutional campuses, and believed that the Collegiate Gothic style was most appropriate for college campuses.
The University’s new chapel would be dedicated to Henry Mansfield Cannon, like T. C. Williams, a Richmond tobacco entrepreneur with a soft spot for UR. The architect selected to design it was Richmond’s own Charles M. Robinson, who would have considerable success with the design of public school campuses in Virginia over the course of his career.
Tumblr media
(Mary Washington University) — Charles M. Robinson — 1867-1932
For James Madison University in 1908, Robinson developed a comprehensive plan for the campus with a Beaux Arts scheme. He also developed plans for Radford University and Virginia State College in 1913, and also designed eleven buildings for the latter. He would go on to serve as William and Mary’s College Architect from 1921-31, where he would design over 60 buildings in support of his Georgian Revival master plan.
Robinson’s work on Cannon Chapel followed the Collegiate Gothic architectural precedents set by Cram, but it also displayed his own interpretation of the style, with more elaborately embellished and decorative Gothic features than the Cram buildings. (VDHR)
Tumblr media
(Conproco) — 2013 repairs
Old buildings need renewal and the chapel has twice received makeovers, in 1976 and 2013.
(In 1976) the acoustics were improved by removing felt covering from the perimeter walls and placing carpet over the tile flooring. The roof, windows, front stairs, and walk received repairs. New lighting, heating, ventilation, and public address systems were installed. The renovation budget was not sufficient to install central air conditioning, but a forced air circulation system was installed. Several pews were removed from the front rows of the chapel, allowing the chancel to be reshaped by building the aforementioned wood platform in their place. At the same time, the choir loft was restructured to have a capacity of 80 people. (VDHR)
The 2013 work was more extensive where parapet stones and pinnacles were  removed and repaired, thru-wall flashing and copper caps were installed, and corroded rebar and masonry cracks were addressed. (Conproco)
Tumblr media
(VDHR) — 2012 nomination photo
But that’s good. You give 84 year-old buildings all the TLC they need so that they’ll be around for another 84 years. Cannon Chapel continues to serve a vital mission for the university. Yes, it’s a unique alternate venue for meetings, concerts, and special events. It’s also a place of worship and where ceremonies of faith, like weddings or interments, can be observed. It speaks well to UR’s Baptist roots.
It’s also Mac-Daddy beautiful, so what’s your excuse? Check it out.

New Post has been published on https://toldnews.com/world/who-controls-canadas-indigenous-lands/
Who controls Canada's indigenous lands?
The courts in Canada are grappling with a decision central to the relationship between Canadian and traditional indigenous laws.
The dispute involves the construction of a multi-billion dollar gas pipeline in the province of British Columbia.
It’s a project which has exposed a rift between elected and hereditary chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en people, who disagree about whether to allow the pipeline to be built through traditional lands.
The elected councils have jurisdiction within the boundaries of the reservations to administer federal government legislation, but not the wider traditional territory which the pipeline would pass through.
The hereditary chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en nation are stewards and protecters of 22,000 square km (13,670 square miles) of traditional territory, outside the reservations.
They are concerned about the impact of the project on their land and natural resources.
Hereditary Chief Na’Moks of the Tsayu clan, which is part of the Wet’suwet’en people, told the BBC: “You always have to put the environment first.”
So what’s behind the dispute, and who have the courts favoured?
The pipeline
The proposed pipeline would carry gas to the port of Kitimat from the interior of British Columbia, a journey of 670 km (420 miles), passing partly through indigenous lands.
The construction company Coastal GasLink has reached deals with elected indigenous councils along the route.
Image copyright PA
Image caption Protesters in Vancouver have been trying to get the project stopped
This involved permission to build the pipeline in return for local jobs and investment in the area.
Coastal GasLink says it also consulted the hereditary leaders.
But the chiefs say that did not happen, and that they did not give their approval because of environmental concerns.
Suzanne Wilton, a communications adviser for the company, told the BBC: “Coastal GasLink initiated consultation with the Office of the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs in June 2012 by providing formal notification of the proposed project.
“Since then, Coastal GasLink has engaged in a wide range of consultation activities with Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs.”
Chief Na’Moks responded: “That is their statement…we ensured that we stated at any meetings that these meetings cannot be misconstrued as ‘consultation’.”
Protests by groups supporting the hereditary leaders’ decision have followed near the proposed construction site, and across Canada.
In December, the Supreme Court in British Columbia issued an injunction so that construction could go ahead, and protesters were ordered to remove barriers from access roads.
Police arrived to break up the barriers and remove the protesters, 14 of whom were arrested.
But this provincial Supreme Court ruling was only temporary, and it will shortly make a final decision on the case.
Who speaks for indigenous peoples?
At its heart, this is a dispute about who represents and speaks for Canada’s indigenous communities.
Responding to a question at a recent town hall meeting, Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau highlighted the problem of dealing with two distinct groups of indigenous representatives.
“It is not for the federal government to decide who speaks for you. That’s not my job,” he said.
Hereditary chiefs are chosen by elders and clan members.
The elected indigenous councils were set up by the federal government under the Indian Act of 1876, which defined “Indian” status in Canada, and were designed as a means to assimilate indigenous people.
As such, the elected councils remain a controversial legacy of the past.
Image copyright PA
Image caption A protest camp on a road near the pipeline construction project
“Canada has a long and terrible history in regards to indigenous people,” said Justin Trudeau at the same town hall meeting.
“We have not treated indigenous peoples as partners and stewards of this land.”
The Indian Act does not recognise hereditary indigenous chiefs, although they do often serve on elected councils, and the two groups work together on community-wide projects.
“We are hereditary chiefs,” Chief Na’Moks told local media recently in British Columbia, and, referring to the route through which the pipeline would pass, he said “we have control of this land.”
“What’s called the hereditary system is the historic legal and political and economic system of the Wet’suwet’ens, which was in place for thousands and thousands of years before Europeans came to what became Canada,” says Val Napoleon at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
The decision
A federal Supreme Court ruling in 1997 gave indigenous people title over their own traditional lands which had not been ceded to the government.
This gave hope to First Nation communities across Canada which had been campaigning to protect their lands from developers.
Tensions have remained in some areas over precisely which indigenous representatives have these rights in Canada.
It’s a complex issue as indigenous leadership structures vary across the country.
But the forthcoming ruling by the Supreme Court of British Columbia will have important implications for the future of the Coastal GasLink pipeline through Wet’suwet’en territory.

Jane Powell (born Suzanne Lorraine Burce, April 1, 1929) is an American singer, dancer, and actress. Jane rose to fame during her childhood as a singer in her hometown of Portland, Oregon, and signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer while still in her teens. Once there, the studio used her vocal, dancing, and acting talents, casting her in such musicals as "Royal Wedding" (1951) with Fred Astaire, "A Date with Judy" (1948) with friend Elizabeth Taylor, and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (1954) with Howard Keel. In the late 1950s, her film career slowed, leading her to a prolific theater and television career.
In 1985, she relocated with her fifth husband, former child star Dickie Moore (died 2015), to New York City and Wilton, Connecticut, where Jane Powell is still active in local theatre. (Wiki)

Wkwkwk. Setelah semuanya dateng, kita mulai praise and worship. What A Beautiful Name - HIllsong. So happy! Dikomunitas ini aku belajar banyak tentang "acceptance" dari kelebihan dan kekuranganku atau orang lain, it was like my second home. Dari sharing mereka sejak pertama kali udah jadi budaya untuk open dan apa adanya, dimulai dari leadernya, its really help da inspire others to be open up juga walaupun ke orang baru. Inspiring. Sebelumnya aku mo ngomong 1 kalimat aja gemetar, takut salah dan lebih memilih diem daripada salah ngomong, terus aku belajar kalau apapun cerita kita, it will gonna be hard and different, but its okay untuk terbuka dan cerita. Dan dimanapun kita berada, kita akan terus belajar tentang diri kita dan orang lain, memperlengkapi diri kita sendiri to be Christ-like. Aku diberkati dengan banyak hal dengan komunitas yang tepat, komunitas yang fix our eyes to God, we worship and loving God together and personally-- the way we love God, its amazed me. Everyday. Karena aku bisa ngerasain dampaknya setiap hari yang merembet sampai kehidupan pribadi dan pekerjaan aku, in a good ways. One thing yang aku belajar, that we need to respect our leaders and value what others shared to us, karena ketika kita menghargai kita otomatis akan membuka diri kita untuk diberi dan kita jadi lebih bisa menerima dengan baik apa yang akan diberi dari Tuhan lewat orang lain :) I really value my leaders yang udah selalu ada, membantu, menginspirasi aku dan mendampingi pertumbuhan aku sampai aku siap menabur. Kak Elkana, Bang Josh, Ci Siska, Ci Juna dan Ko Yohan. They're my leaders that I will always look up to. Dan punya temen-temen yang jadi my second family, the right persons where I run to, dari Barito, GS8 ke GS15 ga pernah bias tiap kali ngasih advice. Wkwkwk. Aku bener-bener pengen sebut satu-satu sih: (Baritos: Kak Olin, Endah, Matthew, Elisa, Samuel, Suzanne, Wilton, Vily, Tamara, Farven, Bang Olan, Qitto, Suryo, Himavanta, Enjel, Fenna, Olop, Danny, Ribka, Febby, Stanley, Moren) (Gs8: Kevin, Ci Febby, Gebby, Vina, Rindang, Chun Gyi, ko Daniel, Ronny, Will, Sherly, Rini, ka Liza, ko Jon, ko Michael, Ci Patricia) (Gs15: Anthony

Oil vs wild rice: Enbridge, opponents gear up final U.S. pipeline push
CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) – Canada’s Enbridge Inc (ENB.TO) faces an indefinite delay to its biggest-ever capital project if a U.S. state regulator denies its preferred pipeline route through Minnesota, but a victory would spell relief for Canadian oil shippers and northern U.S. refiners.

Some pipeline opponents, which include environmental and Native American groups, are trying to convince the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to kill the project. Others oppose only Enbridge’s proposed new pipeline route, saying it would consume more land and threaten Native Americans’ traditional harvest of wild rice from wetlands.
Enbridge wants to replace the aging 1,031-mile (1,660-km) Line 3 pipeline that runs from Alberta to Wisconsin.
Worsening bottlenecks in Alberta have steepened a price discount for its heavy crude, and several pipeline projects that could ease the situation face stiff opposition.
Line 3, placed into service in 1968, operates at half its capacity due to integrity concerns. Its replacement would allow it to return to approved capacity of 760,000 barrels per day.
Regulatory approval may be pivotal to restoring investor confidence in Enbridge, whose stock is down 18 percent this year, partly on debt concerns, even as the S&P TSX energy index .SPTTEN is up slightly.
The PUC is set to decide late this month whether the total $7 billion project is necessary and if so, what route it should take. An administrative law judge recommended in April the expanded pipeline should follow the existing route.
Enbridge prefers a new route that bypasses an indigenous reservation, avoids some ecologically sensitive areas and prevents a pipeline shutdown of up to one year.

It hopes to start construction in Minnesota in November. A different route would require a detailed evaluation that would set back plans to start the added oil flow by late 2019, said Guy Jarvis, Enbridge’s executive vice-president of liquids pipelines and major projects.
“A ruling by the PUC of anything other than our preferred route is clearly going to put the timeline for this project in jeopardy,” he told Reuters in an interview.
The late stages of Enbridge’s biggest-ever, three-year outreach effort will marshal Minnesota’s refiners, business and labor groups to lobby state legislators and other “influencers” for the project, Jarvis said. To those groups, Line 3 means a $2.5 billion investment in the state, more jobs and less crude traveling by rail.
“It’s a full-court press,” Jarvis said. “.. They can carry the message of what it means in Minnesota better than we can.”
For Flint Hills Resources, a unit of Koch Industries, Line 3 is critical to supplying its Minnesota refinery with adequate volumes of Canadian crude to produce fuel and asphalt, said spokesman Jake Reint.
“We’re not getting the crude we need right now.”
FIGHT OVER RICE
Enbridge’s opponents have their own gameplan.
Aboriginal environment group Honor the Earth hopes to sway Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton to help kill the project.
The governor has no formal role in the commission’s deliberations, but carries valuable influence, said Tara Houska, national campaigns director for Honor the Earth. The state commerce department has already said Enbridge has not shown the project is needed.
A spokesperson for Dayton said the governor has made clear that the PUC operates independently of his administration. Last month, Dayton vetoed a bill that would have allowed Enbridge to bypass the PUC.
Honor the Earth argues that expanding the pipeline tramples on tribal rights to harvest wild rice, hunt and fish in the area. The wild rice issue is “critical to this decision,” said Catherine Collentine of Sierra Club, another environmentalist group opposing Line 3.
The company will work to protect wild rice areas during pipeline construction and operation, Enbridge spokeswoman Suzanne Wilton said.
The Canadian oil industry faces opposition to other pipeline projects, and views approval for this one as a badly needed victory.
“It’s very important for the industry to prove they can, not (only) get lines built, but lines increased,” said Kevin Brent, vice-president of investments at BlueSky Equities, which owns Enbridge stock.
A loss in Minnesota “would be terrible for investor sentiment,” he said.
