This is an utterly delightful mash-up of the theme song from The Story of Ming Lan with pingtan (评弹), a style of singing/oral performance using a Wu dialect from the Suzhou region! It was a popular form of entertainment and storytelling for hundreds of years and is a living art that has been passed down through the generations, surviving even the iconoclasm of the Cultural Revolution.

I love pingtan because it reminds me of my grandfather, who passed away last year. He grew up in Shanghai and told me stories about how he, as a young man, would go to teahouses and listen to pingtan while enjoying some watermelon seeds and a pot of tea. Now when I hear pingtan, I remember his face and his laughter.

Suzhou -The Oriental Venice

Suzhou ist eine westlich von Shanghai gelegene Stadt, die bekannt ist für ihre Kanäle, Brücken und klassischen Gärten. Ein Tapetenwechsel tut uns gerade gut und wir genießen die Abwechslung zu Peking. Mit dem Zug ging’s am 25.12. nach Suzhou. Nach etwa fünf Stunden kamen wir an, wurden von unserem Guide „Peter“😃 und Fahrer abgeholt und fuhren zum Hotel. Danach starteten wir unser Sightseeingprogramm. Zuerst zum Tempel Ding Hui, einer der ältesten Tempel in Suzhou. Danach zum Shuangta Market, ein Food-Market, und danach zur Pingjiang Road. Alles im dem Alten, ursprünglichen Teil von Suzhou. Am Abend besuchten wir dann die Kunqu Opera and Pingtan Show. Im Fuxi Tea House zeigte uns die Darstellerin wie man sich zur Kunqu Opera schminkt und wir konnten dem musizieren und Gesang zuhören, verstanden haben wir leider nichts, doch ein Teil übersetzte uns unser Guide. Es war trotzdem ein tolles Erlebnis.
