Our pilot this time is Small Town Love by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern (Trophy Wife, Booksmart). Small Town Love is about a sparring mother and daughter in rural Michigan who are forced to lean on each other when they become pregnant at the same time. Listen to Andrew’s interview with Sarah and Emily to hear about how the first script they wrote together, Booksmart, took eleven years to reach the screen; what Emily learned from working with David Mamet; why they made the transition from film to TV; and how you can tell when an idea will actually make a good TV show. This week I was given 3 different magazines which included editorial illustration the 2 images you see are from the 1949 issue of ‘Punch’ magazine, looking trough this magazine really helped me write parts of my essay as I was able to see the difference in materials used on different time periods, for example I posted an I,age of the New Yorker issue on race from 1932 and the quality of this magazine seemed to be a lot better than the punch magazine. This really surprised me and proved my point that the New Yorker were ahead of times it was published 10 years prior. Another book a looked at was 50 years of illustration. Where I found a really interesting piece on politics. It was a piece of Richard Nixon, who was the only president to resign. This seemed to be quite disrespectful towards America. Scarfed created this illustration of Nixon wiping himself with the American flag, this shows a great disrespect and is also quite offensive as the flag symbolises the country and for someone who represented the country, seen to be doing this is not going to give off a good impression. After looking at both of these sources it has given me more of an is sight of what editorial illustration is, I have also looked at different illustrators such as Syd Hoff, Arthur Szyk and Saul Steinberg I think that Steinbergs work interests me the most as he created a lot of illustrations around the Second World War.
