MY AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE Pt. IV - Manly Beach, Sydney
MY AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE Pt. IV – Manly Beach, Sydney
One of my favourite beaches in Australia has always been Manly, just east of Sydney harbour and a 20 min. ferry ride from the city’s Circular Quay. My travelling companion, Suzi, is also a fan of Manly so the first thing we did when she arrived in town was head down to the ferries  for our Manly adventure. The trip was relaxing and scenic, going past the glamorous neighborhoods with multi-million…

Colt and Jody have the best on-screen relationship I’ve seen in years
They may be one of the best relationships period. It’s been almost a month since seeing this and I still can’t get over it. I just love them so much and must now list the reasons why (spoilers ahead):
-Before the accident, they clearly had a genuine connection and cared deeply for each other, even if the relationship was still new.
-Their separation and relationship in general was crucial to the story and not just something thrown in for dramatic effect.
-Colt’s reasoning for disappearing actually made sense (even if he didn’t handle it the right way).
-Colt doesn’t even consider Gail’s offer at first but he’s ALL IN the second he hears Jody’s name.
-Even when Jody’s angry with him for showing up out of nowhere, he tells her how happy he is for her.
-Literally everything about the fire scene is *chef’s kiss*🤌🏼 (and Jody, sorry to tell you this but it’s definitely not a “fling” if you’ve been spinning out over this for the last year and a half).
-Colt’s upset with Gail for lying to him, but more so for the fact that his presence surprised and upset Jody.
-Jody’s the sexy bacon, and she was all along
-Good old-fashioned car cry (this scene was equal parts hilarious and sweet)
-Jody apologizes for the multi-take fire stunt, but Colt says he deserved it. He also wants to make up clipping the camera to her (he’s actually the sweetest🥹)
-High on drugs, Colt goes straight in for the hug and can’t hold back from telling Jody how pretty she is.
-Colt’s celebration when she calls him first, and then he basically drops everything he’s doing to talk to her.
-He drops everything again to help shoot her dream shot, the “one-er”
-Finger guns and Jody inviting him to karaoke
-Gail rips out the rug from under Colt and his only concern is not missing karaoke with Jody.
-“Do you think we’re close to rekindling? I mean it feels like it to me…”😂
-Jody’s heartbroken face when he doesn’t show up😢 She wanted him there so bad. And the subsequent power ballad😭
-He’s literally been dragged across the Sydney harbor bridge and thrown through a car window and a hundred other things and yet he still sprints to try to get to Jody in time.
-Jody doesn’t believe for a second that Colt is responsible for the murder (he apparently spent 23 minutes ushering a cockroach out of her room once and insisted they let it live😂).
-Colt’s “I’m still in love with you” phone call💔
-Jody just knows he’s still alive and isn’t about to give up hope
-She beats the crap out of him when he’s in the costume and he’s so chill about it👍
-“It’s just a stupid movie.” She doesn’t even care about her dream movie she’s spent her whole life working toward. He’s way more important to her than that!🤯😵
-Then he just fires right back and makes it clear he cares about her and her dreams so much more than he cares about himself😩 (what in the selfless-love-in-a-Hollywood-action-film is this!?)
-Her kissing him first😘
-Colt just wants to keep kissing even when they’re interrupted☺️😍
-The reference to spicy margaritas and swimming costumes from a conversation they had 18 months ago
-Colt gets the recording back and excitedly holds it up to Jody, but literally all she cares about is that he’s okay❤️
-Another kiss!
-🎶I was made for lovin’ you baby, you were made for lovin’ me🎶
-He cheers her on at Comic-con
-Jody and Colt and Jean-Claude on the beach being a happy family. What they’ve got is even better than the movies! 👫🐕🌅
What else am I forgetting? Idk but for real, if you haven’t seen it yet you should right now! Even if you have seen it, go buy it and give it the support it deserves!

In just a few weeks, NCIS will be going down under for the franchise's first international adventure. After first debuting in Australia, NCIS: Sydney will air on CBS alongside NCIS and NCIS: Hawaii. And while that might seem confusing at first because it's a show about a branch of the U.S. Military, the first thing you need to know about NCIS: Sydney is that it's inspired by a real NCIS office located in Perth, Australia. And it was also created by a real Australian, executive producer Morgan O'Neill.
In an interview with The Messenger, O'Neill offered some teases that should please any fan of the NCIS franchise, as well as any fans of Australia. Here are a few tidbits to help tide you over while you wait for the premiere.
The cases on NCIS: Sydney are based in reality
O'Neill was thrilled to find that NCIS officers "do this all day, every day in Australia," which is to say they partner up with the Australian Federal Police to solve crimes. "What it allowed us to do is to create NCIS's first actual blended family, where you've got American NCIS agents and Australian AFP agents working together, and having to do so really quickly, because crime is not going to stop just because they've got some jurisdictional issues," he explained. "The cases that NCIS is dealing with in the first season of NCIS: Sydney are exactly what these guys do day-to-day and on an increasing basis, as far as I can tell."
Sydney is an important backdrop
While the actual NCIS office is in Perth, the fictional one is in Sydney, where the Australian Navy and American Navy ships dock together in the harbor. "It's one of the few Navy bases in the world where their fleet command is in their central business district," O'Neill explained. "So when anything happens...you're in the middle of town. You're in the world's biggest harbor on the world's biggest island. So they're really busy guys, as you can imagine."
The city gets to show off
O'Neill says we will "100 percent" get to see all the classic Sydney sights, like the opera house and the famous Harbour Bridge, partly because it's impossible not to. "Like, if you stick a camera on a boat in the middle of Sydney Harbor, and you just go 360 [degrees], you're going to see massive limestone and sandstone cliffs, you're going to see the opera house, you're going to see Lunar Park...I'm biased, but it's one of the world's most beautiful cities, so it's impossible not to show that."
That said, O'Neill also promised there would be "a different version" of Sydney portrayed in the series that might be a treat for locals. "We really spent a long time looking for locations and trying to find stories that angled into Sydney in a way that was unexpected, that was genuinely authentic, that reflected the real diversity of Sydney, because Sydney is a crazy multicultural city."
There will be dangerous animals
"The truth of the matter is when Americans think of Australia...I guarantee top 10 is the dangerous critters down there, a lot of them, in land and sea," O'Neill explained. "And that's a reality, that's not a fabrication. Lots of things that will bite you and hurt you, so we wanted to play into that idea, without making it Crocodile Dundee."
But it's still 'NCIS' at heart
When it came to joining Australian and American culture, O'Neill was thinking of the Australian term "larrikin," which he described as "a kind of cheeky roguish, anti-authoritarian strain that Australians tend to have." He wanted to figure out how to translate that feeling for international viewers, but then when he sat down to watch a whole bunch of episodes of NCIS, he discovered he might not need to.
"I realized that kind of larrikin, anti-authoritarian, kind of scrappy underdog quality is actually NCIS," he said. "I mean, that's what they are. They're the under-resourced, poor cousins. They're the smallest of the 17 military intelligence agencies, and that's Australia, that sense of 'do more with less,' can-do attitude. NCIS is a perfect fit for Sydney."

Monday, July 29 - Sydney
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After three extremely active days we decided to slow it down a bit and catch up on a few places in Sydney we wanted to explore. We are staying out by the airport tonight because of an early flight to Broome tomorrow, so checked out of our downtown hotel and had them hold our bags. We walked past and through the large cathedral here, as well as a sports complex (they were playing pickleball down below on indoor courts) before getting to the park land referred to as The Domain. This was once all the Governor's property (his domain), but in the late 1800's it was donated to the city for the Botanic Garden and surrounding parks, including Mrs. MacQuarie's point (now also named for one of the aboriginal people who originally called this land home).
Because of its age, the Botanic Garden has many old trees and specimen plants, many of which we had missed when we hurried through on Friday. Since it was quite chilly and windy, it made sense to be in among the gardens and walls. One of the highlights here is their succulent garden, which has sections for both Old World and New World succulents. The variety of aloes alone was amazing. There is also a great deal of bird life - this Cockatoo had figured out how to drink from the top of the fountain. There was also a timeline exhibit of the aboriginal story, and just how relatively recently they were given voting rights and included in censuses. Australia does seem to be making an effort to recognize a lot of the First Nations peoples by renaming places, and acknowledging the wrongs of the past. But there is still resistance in some political factions, so it's a slow process.
We also passed this fancy "folly" in a corner of Hyde Park - it was sheltering a drinking fountain (probably not the original use). Further on was another folly dedicated to one of the mayors. It does seem like the later Victorian era is when the major push of building occurred here in Sydney, and many structures from that time have been repurposed into museums. And there are also the requisite memorials to war dead, as well as a large statue of Captain Cook, the "discoverer" of Australia. As the aboriginal response goes, "we didn't know we were lost".
We walked out further under the Harbor Bridge and found a nice exhibit about the fort that had been there originally. When it was decided to build the bridge, the defensive structures were pretty much razed, although they still have a few guns there. It doesn't seem like an area very many people visit, but then there are so many other places to explore around the Harbor, since it is so vast.
We eventually wound up for a late lunch at the Fortune of War pub, where we were able to sit outside, sheltered from the wind and with a propane heater to keep us company. We missed the delightful weather from last week, but the food and beer were excellent. Originally we had thought to take some additional ferries around the Harbor, but the wind, cold temperatures and mostly cloudy skies made it less than appealing, so we headed back to our hotel, stopping along the way to pick up some food for breakfast and a salad for a light dinner.
We got our bags, walked to the train, and got to our airport hotel just before dark - perfect timing. From here it will be a short walk to our terminal tomorrow morning, and we are planning an early bedtime. When we were originally thinking about our stay in Sydney, we were worried that we wouldn't find enough to do for four days, but we barely scratched the surface. For a big city, it is extremely manageable with plentiful, frequent trains, ferries, buses, etc. and lots of museums, parks and walks. We could easily spend another four days, but will be moving on.
Tomorrow we take two flights to get to Broome and we will be able to pack away our gloves and fleece hats until we get back to the states. It will be dry, warm, and sunny in Broome, which will be a change from the New South Wales winter.
