You can support the creating of these videos by buying the music: https://ift.tt/fn2EIxG All sounds in this track came from the K1r, including the drums. There are a few custom patches in here as well, which are available to download from https://ift.tt/6u4wna5 The Kawai K1r (1988) is a rack mount version of the K1 synth which uses Kawai's "VM additive synthesis tone generator", with a selection of 256 basic waveforms, including 52 PCM samples. Building a sound involves mixing up to four of the waveforms, with the ability to add ring modulation as well, but as with so many digital units of the time, it's a slow process diving through the detailed menus on that small LCD screen. Fortunately, there's a VST available from Nils Schneider that's very close to the original sound (some envelopes sound a little different on my K1r compared to the virtual instrument) - you can find it here: https://ift.tt/2LhveYI Music: "Jumping the Shark" (C) Copyright 2022 Alfonse ALFONSE Store: https://ift.tt/bUHVJfl Website: https://ift.tt/kb36OSA Twitter: http://twitter.com/alfonsemusic Instagram: https://ift.tt/pH7Be8f Soundcloud: https://ift.tt/6gNtn9R by Alfonse

Vintage sound 3. From the Live Room 2...
Live jam featuring Ian Bostic on drums and Alfonse on the Novation Bass Station ii. Two more tracks of synth overdubbed later, with delay provided by the Boss DD7 digital delay pedal. Some additional reverb was added to the synths at the mixing stage.

Alfonse is back...
Casio SK-1 sampling keyboard (1985)
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the Casio SK-1 sampler or its factory sounds. Individual drum hits were sampled from slowed-down SK-1 rhythms, to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the SK-1 itself. If you hear something in the track and can't quite figure out where it came from, that was probably a vocal sample. It has a great 8-bit / 9.38kHz lo-fi sound; grainy and interesting...
The aim of this new series of videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools.

From the Live Room 3
Live jam featuring Ian Bostic on drums and Alfonse on the Novation Bass Station II, as well as the classic Roland SH2 monosynth from 1979. With the tuning of VCO2 going a bit unexpectedly wild on the original jam, I ditched the SH2 bassline and re-recorded it on the Bass Station afterwards, followed by a thoroughly understated lead part using the SH2, with effects provided by the Boss CH-1 Super-Chorus pedal and Boss DD7 and Vestax DDX digital delay pedals.

Yamaha Portasound PSS-680 MusicStation FM keyboard (1988)
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the PSS-680. Individual drum hits were sampled from the drum pads and processed (the 680's kick drum is horrible, so that needed some attention for a start...), to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the PSS-680 itself.
The 680 has a 2 operator FM synth on board, which can be edited via the Digital Synthesizer parameters on the front panel; there are limited editing options, but enough to get a cool range of sounds. It also has Midi In, Out and Thru, allowing for plenty of cool connectivity with controllers, computers and other hardware. It's basically identical to the PSS-780, aside from some different coloured pads and other parts, and has the same sound chips as the PSS-480 and 580, which were the next rung down in the product line.

One of a series of synthjams from January 2022. Download them here: https://ift.tt/xS1p5Kk This one is inspired by the third Jamuary challenge from Cuckoo (#cuckoosjamuarychallengeshittygear), although there's really only one bit of gear in this setup that truly fits that epithet and that's the Realistic Concertmate Rhythm Box, which was overpriced at £5 (have to admit the kick and snare have a nice warmth to them, though). For the other parts, I sampled my voice into the Yamaha VSS200's lo-fi sampler, used the nicely gritty filter on the Casio MT400V and padded it out with a bit of Casio MT52. Music: "Robot Coalition" (C) Copyright 2021 Alfonse Download the track here: https://ift.tt/2PEjkXb Yamaha Portasound PSS-780 MusicStation FM keyboard (1989) The PSS-780 almost identical to the PSS-680, aside from some different coloured pads and buttons, a few new rhythm patterns and a pointless re-numbering of all the voices, and it has the same sounds as the PSS-480 and 580, which were the next rung down in the product line. The 780 has a 2 operator FM synth on board, which can be edited via the limited Digital Synthesizer parameters on the front panel. More than that, it also has Midi In, Out and Thru which gives you the capability to access even more parameters via MIDI SysEx messages; a number of editors exist to modify and build your own patches. All sounds you hear in this track (other than the kick drum) come from the 780 and custom patches were made using Martin Tarenskeen's excellent PSS-780 panel for Ctrlr. https://ift.tt/3hJ9A9l All the patches from this track and my other keyboard demos featuring the 580, 680 and 780 can be downloaded free from my website, https://ift.tt/3tPUEuM If anyone with a 680 or 780 is looking for a solution to that really invasive whining on the output, there's a video by James Bennett looking at the issue here: https://youtu.be/wWX7BCtU3mI (Note - I have no ability with electronics, so haven't tried to replicate it, but it makes for an interesting video!)
