Meeting and Dating T.B. Player

- Just to start things off: Ethan Embry once said in an interview that he named his character Toby/Tobias because that’s what T.B. sounds like. (The initials originally stood for The Bass Player as a sort of inside joke). So that’s what I’ll be calling him.

- You and Toby were introduced to each other by Faye. Prior to being introduced, the bassist had spotted you at your job, and while he was just one of the hundred or so people that would have been in or around your store that day, you were the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen.

- He quickly developed a crush on you and soon enough, it had become routine for him to spend his free time lingering around there. Sometimes he’d loiter out front by the window, other times he’d come in and pretend to shop; occasionally buying something so that he didn’t look completely suspicious. Either way, he’d always sneak glances at you and try to work up the nerve to ask you out.

- He’d always try his best to come up with something clever to say; even something not so clever if need be, but any time he came face to face with you, his mouth went dry and he lost his train of thought; only managing to say a shy hello and stutter out short, quiet answers to all of your polite customer service questions.

- Finally, after a month or two of him wasting his savings on random things he didn’t need, he decided that it might be in his best interests; emotionally and financially, to ask for a little help.

- So, after practice one day, he asked if he could talk to Faye and; after asking her vague questions that left him with little reassurance, he finally told her who the mystery girl was and to his surprise, she actually knew you.

- Granted, the two of you weren’t sisters or anything, but you had been friends in high school and she wouldn’t have minded catching up with you. So when he got over his initial shock and asked if she “thought she could introduce the two of you or maybe bring you around sometime”, she smiled and said that she’d see what she could do; leaving him smiling widely and excitedly making his way out of the garage.

- Keeping her promise, she took a trip to the store you worked at and greeted you with familiarity, catching up with you as she looked around the shop and pretended as though her being there was just a coincidence.

- After a bit of conversation, she asked what time you got off and told you that you should come and see her boyfriends band rehearsal, saying how they were really good and that you’d love them. You doubted her opinion of them; it was her boyfriend after all, but you liked hanging out with her in high school enough to be willing to sit through potentially bad music in order to reconnect; you didn’t have any plans anyway.

- So you arrived at her house the next day and she introduced you to everyone; giving a special little “and this is Toby” as he tripped over something on the floor.

- He gave you a big, somewhat embarrassed smile and an awkward wave as he greeted you; though his previous humiliation faded as soon as you mentioned how you “think you’ve seen him around your store”; as though you’d actually be able to miss him with how much time he spends there.

- You don’t know how hard he had to work to keep his attention on his playing with you sitting on the couch only a few feet away from him. It was like driving down a long stretch of road with a cop right behind you: he felt the need to pay special attention to every little thing he did; as though he’d royally mess up and you’d think he were a loser for the rest of your life.

- And yet, his playing seemed completely trivial in comparison to the ability to finally talk to you. Now that you’ve been introduced he feels as though he can speak to you like a normal person; even if he’s still a bit shy from time to time.

- So the two of you start to get to know each other and even begin hanging out outside of the usual places you’d come across one another. He sort of follows you around like a lost puppy: asking if he can come whenever you’re doing something or offering his help whenever you may need it; all while asking Faye about what you thought of him.

- You think it’s kind of cute and while you certainly have your doubts, it’s sort of hard not to realize a guy has a crush on you when he’s offering to carry your groceries and eagerly walking you home from work every day.

- He spends months making himself into your number one man and once he’s proudly become the first person you call whenever you need help; or just want company, he finally decides that it’s time for him to shoot his shot.

- So he tries he luck and does so, asking if you’d like to go out with him sometime and smiling at you when you agree, asking “yeah?” with a little smile just to make sure that you actually do.

- For your first date, he takes you to an arcade loaded up with quarters and the two of you have the time of your lives. He probably tries to win you one of the big stuffed animals that they have hanging up but only manages to get you a little prize. You act like it’s the same thing and kiss him on the cheek, effectively showing that you really don’t mind and cheering him up completely.

- He definitely asked Faye if the two of you talked and if you had a good time or wanted him to call you. She finds it really cute to watch both sides of your relationship fall in love with each other.

- Your first kiss happens a few dates later. The two of you are at a county fair and he’s redeemed himself and managed to win you a big teddy bear so you’re sitting on a bench at the end of the night with the huge plush on your lap. One thing leads to another and though he’s still kind of nervous, he works up the courage to lean over and kiss you. …He’s still not sure if actual fireworks went off or if it was just the kiss.

- Once again, he calls up Faye when he gets home but this time, he doesn’t need any advice, he just needs to let out his giddiness as he borderline shouts and talks a mile a minute.

“I did it! I kissed her! Oh my god! She hasn’t called you has she? Oh my god I love her. I mean it, I really love her.”

- Mr. White might want the two of you to ease up on the pda in an effort to appeal to the ladies in the audience but it’ll all be done in vain since Toby’s incapable of stopping the lovestruck looks and the adorable nickname filled greetings he gives you; even when he’s meant to be playing a bachelor. Which means it doesn’t take long for the man to give up and just let him be “the taken one”.

- Thankfully for everyone, most of his preferred pda is completely sweet and family friendly so you won’t have to train him in an attempt to keep up his all American reputation.

- He honestly adores girls who are naturally affectionate; he even tends to prefer it over being affectionate himself. He’s a bit shy so having someone who will take the lead and lean their head on his shoulder or hug his arm is a win win for him.

- He can never get enough of pecks on the lips and cheek kisses.

- Soft, sweet kisses that have you breaking apart in a smile. Kissing him is honestly like magic medicine: no matter what mood you’re in, it’ll cheer you up in an instant.

- He loves using pet names and having them used on him. He alternates between calling you by a nickname, calling you honey, calling you baby, and calling you a multitude of other pet names on the daily.

- Please don’t use his full name when speaking to him because he will think that you’re upset with him and it will momentarily give him a heart attack.

- The two of you rarely go a night or day without cuddling; so long as you can help it. You tend to snuggle as close together as possible so you usually end up being a tangled mess of limbs once you’re safe and sound under your covers.

- You sort of mommy him from time to time. He’s a child at heart which means he isn’t always the most responsible person in the world, because of this, you’ve somewhat taken to taking care of him.

- You’ll act like a nurse when he’s sick, fuss over him, have him lay his head on your lap or shoulder, borderline baby talk him, etc. Every time you do, he looks at you like you hung the moon; you’ll never feel as loved as you do when you catch his eyes on you after you just got finished doing something sweet for him.

- You can always count on him to help you out with whatever you need him to. Just because he finally has you as his girlfriend doesn’t mean that he’s stopped being your voluntary slave. He still acts like your butler, he just gets rewarded for it to the highest degree.

- Whenever he goes and gets something, he always gets you one; regardless of whether you asked for it or not. If he’s thirsty than you have to be, right?

- He always gets all bright eyed and flustered whenever you compliment him and call him handsome. Your praise means the world to him, no matter how often you give it.

- You thought you were his cheerleader? Good one. He’s constantly fawning over you: everything you do is great to him and every accomplishment of yours is like one of his own. Not even your own parents are as proud of or supportive of you as he is.

- Once the band really takes off, he treats you to a bunch of fancy dinners and expensive dates; wanting to share his new and exciting lifestyle with you as best as he can.

- He genuinely doesn’t care how long you take to get ready: he’s always patient and willing to wait and will still compliment you on how good you look; even as you’re running late because of it.

- Going to ice cream parlors.

- Spending entire days at amusement parks.

- Going to Disneyland. For a man who wants to be in the army, he sure loves childish things.

- Movie dates.

- Dancing together.

- Sometimes Toby just completely disappears and that's just something you’ll have to get used to. He gets distracted pretty easily so don’t be surprised if he occasionally shows up late when you're supposed to go out or is gone when you turn to look back at him.

- Going sight seeing with him.

- Having your romantic moments interrupted by the guys in the band, or his manager; especially while he’s on tour.

- Listening on the radio for his music and excitedly freaking out whenever it plays. Your entire family probably thinks that you’ve gone somewhat crazy but at least one person is just laughing and shaking their head at you as they sigh about young love.

- Celebrating all of his accomplishments together.

- Validating his ideas and making sure that he knows he’s appreciated in the band.

- Going to his shows and/or on tour with him.

- Whenever you’re around him before he goes on a television show or on stage, he has you check him over and give him a good luck kiss; usually leading to you having to pull him back quickly so that you can wipe the lipstick off his lips.

- He namedrops you constantly: doesn’t matter if he’s on the stage or on a radio show, if they have a chance to say something, he’s going to bring you up like the lovesick puppy that he is.

- He thinks it’s absolutely adorable whenever you ask for autographs and things like that; regardless of whether it’s for your loved ones or just for yourself.

- Whenever he’s on tour, he always remembers to send you letters and little gifts in the mail. And whenever you’re able to visit him, he makes sure to get you something before you leave so that you can take it home with you and not miss him so much. He’s definitely gotten you some little plush that you clutch to your chest while you’re in your pajamas and on the phone with him.

- He always makes sure that you have pictures together before he leaves for any extended period of time.

- Good morning, goodnight, and other check in phone calls whenever you can’t be around each other.

- He definitely picks you up, in a tight hug and spins you around whenever he’s really excited and/or is reuniting with you after a long time.

- He gets so excited whenever you get him any kind of gift or surprise him with a knock on his dressing room door. It’s a close second to the puppy that you surprised him with when he came back from tour to visit you: even if it was technically just yours, it’s partially his now and he may or may not refer to it as “the baby”.

- He might be the star of a world famous band but he still runs in front of you to open doors and holds his gold suit jacket over your head when it’s raining. No matter how famous they got, Toby always stayed humble and treated you like the most important thing in the world.

- Your family would have no choice but to love him. He’s handsome, young, famous, polite, and intent on joining the military: he strikes out on all the typical 1960s ideals. He’s like a more familiar Elvis.

- Writing him letters once he’s in the army.

- He won a purple heart in Vietnam but something tells me that if there was a wasp or a spider in your home or near you, he’d be two steps away from using you as a meat shield. He’ll be brave but only for you and only by throwing the nearest book at it or jumping to hit it before jumping back as quickly as he can.

- He literally can’t leave if you don’t tell him you love him; or whatever your version of it is: it gives him a complex. He’ll go to leave and say it, repeat himself when you don’t say it back and if you don’t say it then, he’ll immediately think that you’re mad at him and make that stereotypical stressed out hum noise before doubling back to see what’s wrong or if he can finally make you say it.

- A lot of the time, Toby is just oblivious to other peoples interest in you and even if he wasn’t, he’d be kind of flattered by it: like he’d pat himself on the back for scoring such catch. Even so, he’s more insecure than jealous, usually needing a bit of reassurance before he’s back to his happy go lucky self again.

- Toby is a sweetheart but he’s wholeheartedly willing to kill for you. He was getting ready to go into the army, he’d be more than capable of fighting to protect you and he’d do it in a heartbeat.

- I honestly think that he’s incapable of fighting with you. He’d absolutely hate doing it and would do whatever he could to stop an issue from turning into an argument. The two of you have had maybe one fight in your entire relationship and it’s due in part to his ability to talk things out like an actual adult.

- He always offers a genuine apology whenever he messes up and most of his mistakes are just that; mistakes, so it’s pretty hard to hold them against him.

- He tells you that he loves you constantly and is prompted to say it by the littlest of things.

- Pretty early on in your relationship, you had him over for dinner at your house; probably at the insistence of your parents, and you were entirely sure that your father would scare him off with all of his overprotective questioning. But then, your dad asked a question like “what do you want with her” and before anyone could protest, he responded with “well I intend to marry her, sir.”, as though it were the most obvious and sure thing in the world, stunning everyone into silence. Ever since then, you’ve been sure that he was the one.

Player Review-Aero Fighter Special/Sonic Wings Limited (1996) Developers-Video System Publishers-MediaQuest Programmers-Yukio Kaneda Composers-Naoki Itamura Series-Aero Fighters Platforms-Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Arcade, Android Genres-Vertical-Scrolling Shooter Modes-Single-Player, Multiplayer Aero Fighters Limited/Sonic Wings Special is a mash-up of the first 3 games. Most people who have played this, probably played it on a console like PS1 or Sega Saturn, i've never seen this in an arcade.

On the console version there are 7 teams and 14 pilots, the arcade version offers 6 teams and 12 pilots. Alot of your favorites like Keaton, Mao-Mao & Hien are present in this game. Spanky is back, but for some reason his name was changed to Whity and Ellen & Cindy are also in the game but Cindy's name was changed to Cincia. I'm not sure the reason for the name change considering these are major characters in the series. Chaika & Pooshika, Kowful the Viking, T.B. A-10, Lord River N. White are also some recurring characters that are playable here. Each team has a secret machine that is unlockable and there is also a secret team that exists in the console version. This is the first game in the series to offer unlockable content which I guess adds to the replay value but that's assuming you even find the unlockables intriguing enough to go after them. I'm a completionist and I like to explore games fully so this was a much-needed addition for the home entertainment systems as far as i'm concerned.

For this game, Video System adopted the same philosophy as they did with the third entry of the series where your playthroughs won't be exactly the same because there are different levels you COULD play at different stages but that's not necessarily the level you WILL play.

I have a few issues with this game and they are as follows: First of all, this came out a year after Aero Fighters 3 but it doesn't appear to be as impressive graphically. Second of all, this game doesn't really seem to add that much to the series. I like the addition of the unlockables and because it's on PS1, you are able to utilize the memory card and get back to the action at your leisure but for the 4th game in a series, this just doesn't appear to be all that special (no pun intended) and in story it seems to actually take place after the 3rd game but there isn’t a whole lot different with the characters except some likely pointless changes.

THE GOOD -Although games like this were tailor made for the arcade which means you are pretty much expected to beat it in one sitting, I like being able to utilize the memory card and come back to it.

-The addition of unlockable material gives the game a sense of replay value and variety as well. Beating the game takes quite a bit of time though so it's up to you whether you care enough to actually unlock everything.

THE BAD -This game doesn't really add much to the series and considering it was the last game before the series took a complete detour into a more realistic 3D setting, that's a drag.

-Aesthetically this is probably the most boring game in the series outside of the original. Video System didn't do enough to really make this feel like it's own stand alone entry.

I give this game an 8.3 out of 10 SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTING

Siobhan casting ray of sickness on the DM and, later, Adaine having to quickly clarify that she didn’t cast ray of sickness on Kristen when she was existential crisis barfing.

No one can say “lunch lad” without breaking composure immediately.

Riz trying to confer with the rat. AND THEN IT WORKED LATER. WHAT.

“You were the angel of eating the right amount of food?”

I love Gorthalax. He’s so well spoken and awkward but also really frank and earnest. That whole conversation was gold.

Everyone trying to hardline veto Kristen becoming a warlock. Also I checked and warlocks don’t have healing spells which, for this mishap prone group, is, uh, not good.

“Is he my dad?” is becoming my favorite running joke.

Oh thank Sol, Gorgug went to heaven. Sucky orc heaven, but I knew he was a good boy.

If there are multiple heavens and hells, which one do you go to if you don’t actively worship a specific god?

“Your dad is a demon.�� “Uh, your dad is a pirate and we’re not rude about that.” “Um, actually, he’s a privateer” “MMM.”

I love that it took them like a solid 5 minutes to make the connection from, “The portal needs a direct connection to Sol” to “Maybe they were trying to make Kristen the portal” because that conversation was all over the place.

Gorgug acting like for even a second he knew what perditional condradoxy meant.

Why is this show so rat focussed?

Adaine, who has only ever eaten fancy food up until a month ago: Only being able to grant ice cream wishes is a bad thing????

Ally going all shocked disbelief when Fig wanted to disguise herself as a pre-med student as if they weren’t just suggesting Kristen join TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.

That being said, WHAT? FIG WHAT?

“Roll opposed athletics to medically fight the sand demon”

GUN DOCTOR RIZ

And then it just turns into an episode of GREY’S FREAKING ANATOMY (which is a show that must be amazing in a setting like this btw. Like, how do you jump the shark in a world where ice cream genies are a thing?)

This is Fig’s second fake job now that I think about it. She also rolled really well to be a fake bouncer. Wait, Jawbone works at their school now so he has to know she was lying, right?

Anyway, that was peak bard.

Man, Brennan is such a good DM. I don’t think I ever would have let that nonsense sequence happen in my game but it was so freaking good.

Adaine using mage hand to rig heads or tails with Fabian and Gorgug. She’s my favorite.

Fabian, the same day they had a huge battle with MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS: We dont fight children. Don’t you though?

“No I never get what I want.”/”I often get what I want and I’m very satisfied” Tag yourself.

Adaine being proud of figuring out the bus system. I feel like I wrote that. Also, I just moved to NY and same girl.

Jawbone being a great counselor is 100% funnier than him being an incompetent one like I would have assumed.

Good on Adaine for doing an arcana check on her gift because that whole sequence threw up trap alarm bells in my head. (Did they even tell Gorthalax about the tin flower? And I feel like he should hate rubies at this point, not be giving his daughter a Ruby guitar pick).

Oh, btw, I loved all the stuff with Fig and her dad. Emily roleplayed that so sincerely (when she wasn’t messing around). I especially liked the part before he left when she was lie, “Why didn’t you have someone come get me?”

THE INITIALS T.B. ON THE FRONT. The realization dawning on Murph’s face was incredible.

“Huge bird tits” EMILY. MIDDLE NAME. AXFORD. STOP DESCRIBING SEXY ANIMALS.

This group is so bad at tag team lying. From a meta game standpoint, they players are super good at RPing but they choose to RP people who are just so bad at improv. Especially Emily. What an agent of chaos.

Adaine just cutting through the nonsense and casting friend on Skarnk.

Was Brennan a psych major or something? I feel like we keep getting taken on these journeys through the human (you know what I mean) mind. (That whole sequence with Shellford was so depressing).

It must be so weird to live in a world where at 14 year old can potentially know a spell that lets the read your thoughts.

OK so Kristen. My question is, did Brennan and the group know how far Ally was gonna go with her? Because the entire group always seems hysterically caught off guard by every crazy thing that comes out of Ally’s mouth, but like as themselves, not just as their characters.

Man I hope Ally’s childhood wasn’t as dramatic as Kristen’s.

Kristen: Do you guys mind spitting up? Famous last words, girl.

“Praise Helio, we’ve got to go.”

Emily goading Ally into making another truly terrible speech.

Gorgug insisting on always standing in front of everyone.

That Thing You Do! is one of my all time favorite movies. It would be pretty easy to Hellcheerify (sorry Jeff, you’d be kicked out of the band in favor of Jason, because Unnamed Freak kinda has to be the also-unnamed bassist T.B. Player). But I wondered… could I possibly Greatmage it?

Picture it. Hawkins, Indiana; 1984. Eddie has flown away to L.A. and stardom, leaving his former bandmates struggling to go on. Jeff and Gareth are considering giving up entirely, but their bass player convinces them to try again. His friend Mike has written a song he thinks is pretty good, and gotten them a spot in a local talent show.

Then it mostly follows the plot of the movie, with Gareth changing the tempo of Mike’s song from a ballad to a faster and much more catchy tune. They win the talent show, get a steady gig, make their own records to sell, and eventually get a manager and a recording contract, joining the company’s tour of Midwestern state fairs. It's the Red Wedding of the NBA Style Wars. Tonight, before Game 3 of their playoff series with the Pacers, the Cleveland Cavaliers turned up wearing Thom Browne—all Thom Browne. It wasn't just a few of the team's star players or fashion plates wearing the designer's easy-to-spot shrunken silhouette, it was all 15 team members, including head coach Tyronn Lue. If Russell Westbrook in a shredded sweatshirt or Chris Paul's sideline suits made waves in the world of style, this was a tsunami.

From LeBron James to J.R. Smith to Jordan Clarkson, each entered Indianapolis' Bankers Life Fieldhouse wearing made-to-measure Thom Brown gray Super 120s twill suits, with a white oxford shirt, a tie, cashmere cardigan with 4-bar band detail, and black pebble grain boots or sneakers, with some carrying T.B. duffels and bags (and in LeBron James's case, one epic alligator Mr. Thom bag that rings in at a cool $41K). The fits were unmistakably Thom Browne, the kind that Browne's team—and the designer himself, who is a king of uniform dressing—wear on the daily. While it may not be daily, James & Co. will be wearing their looks again; the team plans to get back into the suited looks for every on-the-road game during the remainder of the playoffs.

Just for fun, have some random tidbits and trivia about With a Little Help From My Friends. Much like the fic itself, this list got quite long, so I’m putting it under the cut…

I don’t write nearly enough about Eddie and Robin’s friendship, but in both ch 8 and ch 24 when Eddie is in dire straits, Robin is literally the first person he thinks of that he can go to for help.

In ch 10 while Eddie and Max are at the store, he’s debating between Red Vines and Twizzlers, eventually choosing Twizzlers. Later in ch 26 Max says Twizzlers are her favorite candy. And yes, it’s totally because of him.

In ch 12, all that stuff about Temple Grandin and the cows is true. And it totally seemed like something Suzie would just know, and Dustin would eagerly research because he wants to help his bestie.

When I wrote ch 22– the Jason in Pennhurst visited by a vision of El chapter— I had totally forgotten about how Jason kicked Gareth’s ass, but looking back and adding that tidbit to El’s motivations in keeping Jason exactly where he is gives it an extra zesty flavor.

Ch 28, the drabble where Wayne finally makes things official with Claudia, is probably the hardest I’ve ever laughed while writing.

Ch 33 contains a little drabble about Eddie and Chrissy just relaxing in a hammock together, and I honestly think it might be one of the best things I’ve ever written.

In ch 41 Steve probably seems pretty OOC at the beginning. That was deliberate— he’d just gotten back from spending a ton of time with his parents, and no longer has any idea who he actually is. By the end of ch 42 he’s getting back to his real self.

Also in ch 41 Steve refers to Grant as “T.B. Player” purely for a little in-joke with my own self regarding the movie That Thing You Do!, where the bass player never gets a name throughout the entire movie despite being a main character with lots of lines, and in the end credits is listed as T.B. Player. Justice for unnamed freak!

The part in ch 61 where first Eddie and then Steve are teaching Gareth to dance is one of my favorite scenes. If I could draw, I would’ve drawn it!

In ch 63– Will’s letters to Jonathan— I didn’t include Jonathan’s letters back because I just could. not. get his voice right. Jonathan, Nancy, Lucas, Mike, and ironically Steve are the characters that I have the hardest time getting into their heads. I love them all to bits but that’s why I rarely write their pov’s.

Ch 64 was a tough one for me to write and I’m not sure I managed to strike the right balance between Party shenanigans/hellcheer wedding planning vs Robin’s very real fears regarding her parents’ reaction to finding out she was dating Vickie. If I could rewrite the whole fic, this would be the chapter I’d start with. BUT, one thing I liked about it was Steve repairing the crocheted blanket just so Robin could unravel it again. In the Lostsoul Universe, many Party members have told Steve “I love you” but the only time he ever says it back is in this chapter, to Robin. Poor dude.

Ch 66 might seem way OTT but I stand by it. Because it happened to me.

I wrote ch 73 for the sole purpose of giving Eddie a kitten named Lucifer Dio. (Lucy for short!) He absolutely gives cat dad energy.

In ch 79 we find out how Henry Creel became Vecna. Dr. Brenner gave him an experimental drug I called “exousía”. This was a very deliberate choice. Exousía is a Greek word meaning power/control/dominion— all the things Brenner was so hungry for. I based this on googling the word “Soteria” (the implant in Henry’s neck) and discovering that it was an actual Greek word with the meanings of deliverance/healing/salvation. Food for thought!!! Honestly I was a little sad that nobody picked up on how clever I’d been with that name 🙄😂 but that was a really long chapter with a lot going on so it’s understandable.
