I rewatched Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night and the scene that brings the most emotion out of me is still when Mei loudly screeches that she doesn’t want the group to disband and belts out a song with her terrible voice but with such passion that you can feel the emotion coming through the screen. In any other story the moment would be framed as her being desperate and cringe, but this anime is about how that’s okay.
Honestly I haven’t seen any other stories treat characters like Mei with so much compassion, but YoruKura makes a point of highlighting that while she definitely lets her passion take her too far sometimes, there’s a love at the core of her that reaches the people who are truly worth holding on to.
