Kanchenjunga Circuit - Taplejung to Sekathum
The start of a three week hike around Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. It lies on the far eastern border between Nepal and India, and unlike many of the Himalayan giants it stands alone rather than as part of a range. The hike would take me, and nine others travelling with The Mountain Company, from the jungle like lowlands to over 5,000m above sea level, and back in a…

Red Panda – Red Cuddler
Tumblr media
The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens), or Lesser Panda, is one of the species of carnivorans found in mountainous forests from Central Asia to the Indian subcontinent. Later, DNA analysis suggested that red pandas might belong in the bear family. However, later genetic research placed red pandas in their own family: Ailuridae.
Distribution and Habitat
The red panda lives in Nepal, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China, the Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan, southern Tibet, and northern Myanmar. The red panda's maximum global habitat size has been calculated to be 47,100 km2 (18,200 sq mi). This habitat is in the Himalayas' moderate climate zone, where the average annual temperature ranges from 18 to 24 °C (64 to 75 °F). It has been observed at elevations between 2,000 and 4,300 meters (6,600 and 14,100 feet) throughout this range. The red panda prefers steep slopes with dense bamboo cover close to water sources. It lives in temperate broadleaf and mixed forests as well as coniferous forests. It is mostly arboreal and solitary. In addition to fruits and blooms, it primarily eats bamboo shoots and leaves.
Conservation
The species has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2015. It is protected in all range countries. Their main risks include poaching, human meddling, and habitat loss and degradation. The total number of red pandas has reportedly decreased over the past two decades by 40%, according to researchers.
Lore
This is the only member of the Ailuridae family; the family consists of the red panda (the sole living representative) and its extinct relatives. The red panda was first formally described in 1825. The two currently recognized subspecies, the Himalayan and the Chinese red panda, genetically diverged about 250,000 years ago. The red panda's place on the evolutionary tree has been debated, but modern genetic evidence places it in close affinity with raccoons, weasels, and skunks. It is not closely related to the giant panda, which is a bear, though both possess elongated wrist bones, or "false thumbs," used for grasping bamboo. The evolutionary lineage of the red panda (Ailuridae) stretches back around 25 to 18 million years, as indicated by extinct fossil relatives found in Eurasia and North America.
The red panda's role in the culture and folklore of local people is limited. A drawing of a red panda exists on a 13th-century Chinese scroll. In Nepal's Taplejung District, red panda claws are used for treating epilepsy; its skin is used in rituals for treating sick people, making hats, scarecrows and decorating houses. In China, the fur is used for local cultural ceremonies. At weddings, the bridegroom traditionally carries the hide. Hats made of red panda tails are also used by local newlyweds as a "good-luck charm".
In western Nepal, Magar shamans use its skin and fur in their ritual dresses and believe that it protects against evil spirits. People in central Bhutan consider red pandas to be reincarnations of Buddhist monks. Some tribal people in northeast India and the Yi people believe that it brings good luck to wear red panda tails or hats made of its fur.
In Turning Red, the story follows Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who transforms into a giant red panda when she experiences any strong emotion due to a hereditary curse from her ancestor in ancient China. Sun Yee was the ancestress of the main protagonists, and she was the poet and the member of a hybrid from the Assassin Order and Templar Order, the real enemies of Conservationist Hunters, the peacekeepers of planet Earth that either hunt or preserve creatures or people from extinction.

Habre Update:
Exciting news from Taplejung; local artist Wang Lama recently completed his beautiful mural of the Red Panda in the welcome area of the Red Panda conservation Centre which is now known as Himalaya Habre Centre.
The custom-designed furniture and fit-outs is shaping up in one of the wood workshops at Lalitpur. Once done, it will be transported to Taplejung where the Habre Centre eagerly awaits its soft opening on the 22nd of April.
Following up to the interview by reporter Maheshwar Acharya with the SMA team at our Chakupat Studio, the Habre Centre also got a centre page featured in Nepali times (in English) and Himal Khabar (in Nepali) last week. The writer covered the exciting story of how SMA got the opportunity of designing first in the world red panda conservation center and the journey of its design & build process.
We cannot wait to hear about the stay-in experiences of the visitors this place will receive!

A Detailed Itinerary for the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek
The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is one of the most beautiful and challenging treks in Nepal. This trek takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to alpine meadows, and offers stunning views of the world's third-highest peak, Kanchenjunga. Here's a detailed itinerary to help you plan your journey, with some personal insights to make the experience more relatable and emotional.
Tumblr media
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, Nepal's bustling capital. Spend the day exploring the city's vibrant streets, visiting historic temples, and preparing for your trek. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as I packed my gear, knowing that a challenging journey lay ahead.
Day 2: Fly to Bhadrapur and Drive to Taplejung
Take an early morning flight to Bhadrapur, followed by a long drive to Taplejung, the starting point of the trek. The drive is bumpy and tiring, but the scenic views of the hills and villages along the way are captivating. I felt a sense of anticipation growing as we got closer to Taplejung.
Day 3: Taplejung to Mitlung (921m)
The trek officially starts today. The trail descends through terraced fields and small villages. The local children greeted us with smiles, reminding me of the warmth and hospitality of the people in this region. The walk to Mitlung is relatively easy, allowing you to ease into the trekking routine.
Day 4: Mitlung to Chirwa (1,270m)
Today's trek takes you through lush forests and along the banks of the Tamor River. The sound of the flowing river was soothing, and the greenery around us was a welcome sight. Reaching Chirwa, a small village with basic accommodations, felt like a small victory.
Day 5: Chirwa to Sekathum (1,660m)
The trail continues through more forests and crosses several suspension bridges. The terrain starts to get steeper, but the beauty of the surroundings keeps you motivated. I remember feeling a deep sense of connection with nature as we walked through the serene landscapes.
Day 6: Sekathum to Amjilosa (2,510m)
This is a challenging day as the trail gets steeper and more rugged. The climb is tough, but the views of waterfalls and distant peaks make it worthwhile. Reaching Amjilosa felt like a huge achievement, and the camaraderie with fellow trekkers was heartwarming.
Day 7: Amjilosa to Gyabla (2,730m)
The trek continues through dense forests of bamboo and rhododendron. The trail is less steep but still demanding. The beauty of the flora and fauna kept me going, and I felt a deep appreciation for the pristine environment.
Day 8: Gyabla to Ghunsa (3,595m)
Today, the trail opens up into wider valleys. Ghunsa is a beautiful village with traditional Tibetan houses. The altitude starts to become noticeable, and it's essential to take it slow. The warm welcome from the villagers and the comfort of a cozy lodge were very comforting.
Day 9: Acclimatization Day in Ghunsa
Spend a day in Ghunsa to acclimatize. You can take short hikes around the village, visit the local monastery, and interact with the locals. This day was crucial for me as it allowed my body to adjust to the altitude, and the interactions with the villagers were enriching.
Day 10: Ghunsa to Kambachen (4,050m)
The trek to Kambachen is long and demanding. The trail passes through beautiful landscapes and offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Reaching Kambachen felt like entering a different world, surrounded by towering mountains.
Day 11: Acclimatization Day in Kambachen
Another day for acclimatization. You can explore the area, rest, and prepare for the higher altitudes ahead. The majestic views from Kambachen were a constant reminder of why I chose this trek.
Day 12: Kambachen to Lhonak (4,780m)
The trail becomes more challenging as you gain altitude. The landscape turns more rugged and barren, but the views of the Kanchenjunga massif are awe-inspiring. Lhonak is a remote and isolated place, making it a true adventure.
Day 13: Lhonak to Pangpema (5,143m) and Back to Lhonak
Today, you’ll trek to the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp at Pangpema. Standing at the base of Kanchenjunga was an emotional moment for me, a mix of awe and humility. After soaking in the views, you’ll return to Lhonak for the night.
Day 14: Lhonak to Ghunsa
Begin the descent back to Ghunsa. The journey down is faster, but the memories of the higher altitudes linger. The sense of accomplishment kept my spirits high.
Day 15: Ghunsa to Sele Le (4,290m)
The trail to Sele Le is steep and challenging, passing through dense forests and high ridges. The trek is tough, but the thought of nearing the end of the journey kept me motivated.
Day 16: Sele Le to Cheram (3,870m)
Today’s trek involves crossing several high passes, offering breathtaking views of the mountains. The challenge of the passes was intense, but the stunning scenery made it worth every step.
Day 17: Cheram to Tortong (2,995m)
The trail descends through beautiful forests and along rivers. The descent was easier on the lungs but tough on the knees. The changing landscapes kept the journey interesting.
Day 18: Tortong to Yamphudin (2,080m)
The trek continues through lush forests and small villages. The return to lower altitudes brought a sense of relief and achievement.
Day 19: Yamphudin to Khebang (1,910m)
Today's trek takes you through terraced fields and traditional villages. The friendly locals and the beautiful scenery were constant sources of joy.
Day 20: Khebang to Taplejung
The final day of trekking brings you back to Taplejung. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming as we completed the circuit. The journey had been tough, but the experiences and memories made it all worthwhile.
Day 21: Drive to Bhadrapur and Fly to Kathmandu
A long drive back to Bhadrapur, followed by a flight to Kathmandu. Reflecting on the trek during the journey back, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experience and the people I met along the way.
Conclusion
The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a journey of a lifetime. It tests your physical and mental limits but rewards you with unparalleled beauty and unforgettable experiences. Each step brings new challenges and new joys, and the connections you make with fellow trekkers and locals add a rich emotional layer to the adventure. If you're considering this trek, know that it will change you in ways you can't even imagine. Happy trekking!
