maybe i should just prep like 3 or 4 games recreationally. pretending that it’s in case i ever acquire a ‘group’ and wish to pitch them options. when in fact. i don’t enjoy optimism such as this

the true nightmare of an interest in running tabletop rpgs is trying to find literally any game that isn’t about the fucking lovecraft mythos

inaugural worldbuilding/how-to-play-a-ttrpg meeting with the people in my cohort im going to run a dungeon world game for ended with me asking about their favorite fantasy stories or any set pieces or atmosphere they particularly like. the answers i got back were:
1. “uh, i like the caves from the lord of the rings.” “the mines of moria?” “yeah, those ones. those are great!”
2. “i really liked eragon because there wasn’t a battle at the end of the lord of the rings so i thought eragon was a lot more satisfying. also the eragon elves were better.” “interesting. what about the elves was better?” “i don’t know, i can’t remember the books”
3. “i came to fantasy fiction late in life, so i don’t really have any favorites. but i did recently see all three lord of the rings movies in one day! i like forests and the shire”
meaning i’ve been asked to run a campaign that is, functionally, lord of the rings milieu fanfiction, for people with only vague memories of literally anything about the lord of the rings
i love being extremely qualified to do tasks

of course, now i understand that that was wrong, which is why instead i just attempt to subtly one-up the other players in my ttrpg games by creating the character who will most appeal to the particular narrative and trivia interests of the gm
