The Flora of North America has lumped this taxon into Grindelia hirsutula. The Jepson E-Flora as well as PLANTS database retain G. stricta var. platyphylla. This California endemic is found in salt marshes along the coastal strand from Del Norte County south to Ventura County, including the northern Channel Islands.
