Modest Mouse // Teeth Like God's Shoeshine
Here's the man with teeth like God's shoeshine He sparkles, shimmers, shines Let's all have another Orange Julius Thick syrup standing in lines The malls are the soon-to-be ghost towns Well, so long, farewell, goodbye

But you, you, tag along
And we, we, all been wronged
And I get dizzier by the mile"

Every Record I Own - Day 763: Modest Mouse The Lonesome Crowded West
I started listening to Modest Mouse after playing a show with them back in ‘96. In the nearly 27 years since then, my attention span with regards to their output has ebbed and flowed. They were a prolific band back in the day, releasing double albums in both ‘96 and ‘97, while also releasing five EPs and singles in that two-year period. I was a broke college student at the time, too poor to buy any records, so my fandom really just consisted of listening in on my housemates’ spins of their records. I loved some of those early 7″s and I loved the debut album, but when a copy of The Lonesome Crowded West wound up in our house, I found myself retreating to my basement room to throw on His Hero Is Gone or whatever else it was I was obsessing over at the time.
This wasn’t a deliberate slight on The Lonesome Crowded West. The barked vocals and mangled guitar work on album opener “Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine” should’ve been right up my alley. But I was generally more drawn to their fractured down-and-out pop songs, and the new album seemed more like drunk and rowdy indie rock. It would be a few years before I heard a new Modest Mouse song that drew me back into their world.
But The Lonesome Crowded West was the album where the band went from being local heroes to national darlings of the bespectacled sweater-clad punks. If you lived in a college town or a decently hip part of a bigger city, you probably heard Modest Mouse in coffee shops and bars. Friend’s houses. Record stores. Over the PA between bands at venues.
I bought this 2xLP when it was reissued in 2014 because I had heard bits and pieces of it out in public over the years, and its charms were beginning to grow on me. I loved the ominous spaghetti western twang of “Cowboy Dan” and the bittersweet nostalgic pop of “Trailer Trash.” It was still a daunting record in length and it still felt a bit more ferocious than what I ultimately craved from the band, but I was glad to have the album in my collection.
I’ve now thrown on The Lonesome Crowded West more since the passing of Jeremiah Green than I ever did in years past. It’s been scratching a very similar itch to Dead Moon, a band that’s been sorta unavoidable here in the Northwest the last few decades. Dead Moon always seemed like they belonged to a different, older crowd. But once I started listening to their albums on my own a few years ago, I realized how many of the songs I recognized from hanging out at the Cha Cha Lounge or record shopping at Singles Going Steady or waiting for the next band to go on at The Comet. It sounded like being young and living in my first apartment on Capitol Hill. Like Dead Moon, The Lonesome Crowded West wasn’t a part of my private soundtrack, but it was certainly a part of my public life.
Nostalgia can be a poison, but it can also keep us tethered to some aspect of our youth. And that reminder can help keep us in touch with some side of ourselves that isn’t quite as cynical or browbeaten by the world around us. At the very least, it can remind us of a time where we didn’t worry about our peers passing away in the blink of an eye. We were young and careless and going through the growing pains of entering adulthood, and while I don’t want to pretend that they were easy times, they certainly weren’t without a sense of wonder, freedom, and possibility.
