Dioscuri from Locri Epizefiri
Right Dioscuros, west pediment sculptural complex, Marasà sanctuary ca. 450-400 BC. Greek civilization, Parian marble. Museo archeologico nazionale di Reggio Calabria, Italy
wiki photo edited
Castor and Pollux (or Polydeuces), twin half-brothers (heteropaternal superfecundation) in Greek and Roman mythology, known together as Dioscuri or Dioskouroi Their mother was Leda, but they had different fathers; Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, while Pollux was the divine son of Zeus, who seduced Leda in the form of a swan. They are sometimes said to have been born from an egg, along with their twin sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
Epizephyrian Locris (Locri Epizefiri) = Locris on (epi-) the west (Zephyrus, the west wind)
The last of the Greek colonies founded on the territory of present-day Calabria. One of the most culturally dazzling cities of Magna Graecia during the Greek Classical and Hellenistic periods and Plato described it as a city "governed by beautiful laws"

Might be wrong about this, but the snake statue in The Next Prince episode 4 looks to be based off of a real Naga religious statue at the Monkuware Thao Wessuwan Temple in Chiang Mai, which I only know because Pompam Niti (GMMTV actor) posted a pic of going to worship at it earlier today. And even if it’s not specifically based on this statue, it’s still interesting and relevant to The Next Prince to know the tradition around the serpentine Naga figures in the region.
Tumblr media
Here’s the only Anglo resource on it I found after a bit of digging. If nothing else, you can enjoy the incredible butch Australian social worker giving the video tour.
youtube
It’s interesting to see how The Next Prince, with it’s explicit commentaries on colonialism and European culture so far, seems to be playing with the negative cultural associations with snakes born from Abrahamic religious traditions that much of the international audience grew up with. Snakes are manipulative, evil, satanic since the garden of Eden. Are we meant to apply those values to the Phuchongphisut family in the same way we’re meant to make those connections to Slytherin in HP?
Meanwhile, Thailand’s traditions around the serpents, along with much of South and Southeast Asia, is linked to the Naga figure that we see above. I’m just grabbing this info from Wikipedia so I’m glad to hear more insight from people with more familiarly. According to the wiki article, Naga’s are divine beings that can take the form of snakes, humans, or half-snake/half-humans. As in much of religion outside of the Abrahamic traditions, nagas aren’t essentially good or bad.
Some beliefs that might help in appreciating The Next Prince (we’ll see 🤷🏻‍♀️):
1. Their role as followers of one of The Four Heavenly Kings (4 kings sound familiar?), Virupaksa, who guards the Western direction
2. Like the Phuchongphisut family crest, the nagas are depicted with gems and jewelry, as they hail from the underworld (caverns included), where precious stones can be found.
3. Their also sometimes depicted holding Amrita, an elixir for immortality, which seems significant after the last conversation between Charan and the King, about the myth of the one mortal and one immortal Gemini twins, Castor and Pollux, in the constellation—another western myth contrasted with the South Asian beliefs of that same constellation, Mithuna, which in addition to the meaning of twins, also apparently refers to coupling up romantically and sexually, but specifically as a male and female pair, adding a-whole-nother layer of implications to the king shoving that painting in Charan’s face.
4. The story in the Lotus Sutra of Longyu, or the dragon girl, who upon listening to the Lotus Sutra be read aloud, transforms into a male Bodhisattva. It’s a story that’s been argued to either prove or disprove one had to be male to reach Buddhahood. The gender politics sound like they could mesh well with TNP.
The Next Prince’s juxtaposition of European cultural legacies against the South Asian cultural beliefs creates such a rich narrative tension for me. I’m looking forward to all the meta it’s gonna inspire and hope others pick up on everything it’s doing. So glad Domundi seems to have spent their hefty investment on the writing as well as the rest of the production!

@a-chaotic-dumbass @nysus-temple here it is!! also tagging @godsofhumanity because you said something about calydonian boar hunt which i mention ever so briefly. the links will take you to fics i have written about the aforementioned occurrence since i will shamelessly take any chance to plug my writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Telamon (22) kills his younger half-brother, so both he and Peleus (19) are exiled by their father. Peleus is taken in by his uncle and marries his cousin. He eventually joins the Calydonian Boar Hunt, and accidentally kills his uncle/father-in-law, resulting in his fleeing for a second time. In this second exile he is accused of attempted infidelity by the King’s wife, whom he shunned. The news reaches his own wife, who kills herself, leaving the throne of Pthia to him. The King chases Peleus for revenge, organizing an attack on him by centaurs on Mount Pelion. Chiron aids Peleus and saves his life. This whole fiasco takes 9 years to unfold.
Peleus’ (28) success during the Boar Hunt results in his marriage to Thetis. A year after the wedding, he joins Jason on the Argo. Thetis gives birth to 6 boys before Achilles is born but they all die in infancy.
Priam (27) and Hecuba (25) introduce Paris (0) into the world and almost immediately abandon him into the wild. So far they’ve had Hector (8), his sister (7), Deiphobus (5) and the twins Cassandra and Helenus (4)
4 years later, Achilles (0) is born and dunked in the Styx; Thetis then leaves Peleus (34).
Phoenix (35) gets exiled and comes Phthia because Peleus (35) is his friend, Achilles (1) is living with his dad, he and childless Phoenix bond.
Patroclus (8) kills his playmate over losing a game of petteia; his father sends him away, Peleus (40) empathizes and takes him in, Patroclus and Achilles (5) meet for the first time (ROUGH SEAS)
Menelaus (16) and Agamemnon (21) seek asylum in Sparta, Clytemnestra (14) is immediately infatuated by Agamemnon, Helen (14) not so much. Castor and Pollux (14) are interested in the stories they have to tell.
Agamemnon (22) leaves Sparta to overthrow Aegisthus (20) in Mycenae; he (23) returns to ask for Clytemnestra’s (16) hand in marriage but she’s already married. He kills Tantalus and son (<1) and gets engaged to her (BLOOD-RED HANDS).
Helen (16) gets kidnapped by Theseus about a month later, the Dioscuri (16) bring her back; Clytemnestra (16) and Agamemnon’s (23) wedding gets pulled forward despite the mourning period out of fear for Clytemnestra’s wellbeing and because she is displaying symptoms of pregnancy. Peleus (43) leaves Achilles (9) and Patroclus (12) to go on a military expedition to Troy with Hercules and Telamon (46). When he returns it’s all he talks about and Achilles becomes obsessed with the idea of Troy. Podarkes/Priam (40) earns his epithet when his father (65) gets killed, Hector (21) has his first experiences with war. Telamon takes Priam’s sister as a concubine and she births Teucer, Ajax is 14 at the time.
Helen (18) gets wed off to Menelaus (20). Odysseus (22) marries Penelope (20), Agamemnon (25) and Clytemnestra (18) already have Iphigenia (1) and she’s heavily pregnant (OLIVE TREE)
Achilles (11) gets sent to Charon as a method of education, by now he and Patroclus (14) are inseparable.
Achilles (13) comes back home from Charon and teaches Patroclus everything he learned.
Helen (25) leaves Sparta with Paris (22) (WATCH THE STARS COLLAPSE), Hector (30) freaks out (GATES OF TROY); Achilles (18) impregnates Deidamia (17); Odysseus (29), Agamemnon (32), and Menelaus (27) come and get him for war (SKYROS); Penelope (27) is left alone with Telemachus (1) (CRAZY FOR YOU) and Orestes (10) and Pylades (12) are sent to Sparta to stay with Hermione (6) for her protection.
Achilles (18) goes to Phthia, his father (52) gives him gifts and weapons, Achilles takes Patroclus (21) and Phoenix (52) with him (SAY YOU REMEMBER ME). At Aulis, Iphigenia (11) is brought in as a supposed bride for Achilles, but she is sacrificed (WEDDING ALTARS AND SACRIFICIAL SHRINES). Electra (10) and Chrysothemis (4) are now alone with their mother.
Achilles (25) kills Andromache’s (35) family and she flees to Troy, where she remeets Hector (37) whom she knows from 29 years prior. They get married and a year later Andromache gives birth to Scamandrius/Astyanax.

Hello? Who's there?
This is an ask blog for Celestial Encounters, an AU made by @sainteclectic that you can find extra information about here. Basically, HMS and all the other albums are deities, while Whole (Harmonia) is just some guy who works at a corner store. HMS (or Pathos, Logos, and Psyche) are the primary gods, and they created or formed the other gods as offshoots of themselves, representing aspects of their power or performing duties for them.
Asks are preferably directed at someone specific, but you can also just shout into the void and see who answers. blog rules and further information about the characters are below the cut, but here's the short list:
Pathos (he/she/they) is the god of the moon, emotions, and justice. Under her are Castor (CiD; he/him), the god and entropy and injustice, and Thalia (Fine I'm Fine; any), god of celebration and euphoria.
Logos (she/her) is the god of the sun, logic, and progress. Under her are Pollux (The Before; she/her), god of apathy and downward spirals, and Theseus (...you know; he/they), god of perseverance and change.
Psyche (it/they/rarely she) is the god of the stars, the soul, and the underworld. Under it are Charon (Handsome Devil; he/they/it), god of judgement and passing on, and Lethe (Forest for the Trees; he/it), god of mania and overgrowth.
Aaand Harmonia (he/she), a normal mortal who doesn't know what he's doing here either.
Rules
I honestly don't really have anything except for being generally respectful of the blog owner and not getting too rowdy. {suggestive stuff is fine, use your best judgement on that kind of thing} go wild go crazy
Longer bios
pathos is the god of the moon, emotion, and justice. she gives humans their feelings, compassion, and drive to do what they feel is just. he has a strong sense of justice himself, though that sense might seem intense and destructive at times. despite his seemingly righteous goals, he's often blinded by them and is reckless as a result. she's driven purely by emotions, being a conduit for the feelings of humanity, and often doesn't think things through. logos despises their perceived immaturity, believing her to be too rash and emotional to know what's best for mortals.
logos is the god of the sun, logic, and progress. she grants humanity reasoning skills and technological advancements. she enjoys seeing them develop, but she's grown to dislike mortals for all their flaws and failures. still, she's devoted to giving humanity a flawless future - but she doesn't take their feelings about that into account, only what's "objectively" best for them. she approaches things from a purely practical perspective, not caring much for the emotions of the mortals who will be affected. this constantly puts her at odds with pathos, who thinks her methods are ruthless and cruel.
psyche is the god of the stars, the soul, and the underworld. they represent the spark of life in all things, the driving force that makes them unique. in return for giving humanity their sentience, it sacrificed its own personal identity, instead becoming a vessel for the wayward and damned souls that stay trapped behind their mask. it's exhausted from its duties of managing living and dead souls, as well as keeping logos and pathos from destroying humanity with their constant bickering. they like to go and watch the humans when it gets stressed out. it makes them happy to see mortals living their lives, using the gift of free will they granted them.
harmonia is a normal human living in a semi modern setting. the setting is sort of mixed with a bit of fantasy, because they still know gods exist and worship them and all that, which basically just means there's temples to them instead of churches. he's a minimum wage worker, painfully average, depressed, and barely presentable. she doesn't interact with many people outside of coworkers and customers, and she's certainly never interacted with literal deities before... until now.
thalia is a god of celebration and euphoria, especially after hard times. she represents the kind of overjoyed catharsis you get when you're finally free from your problems. he's worshipped in dances and song, and though they're more of an underground worship god than mainstream one these days (and she prefers it that way), many celebrations like graduations or weddings still include a toast to thalia as part of their tradition.
theseus is an interesting case. he was a human who strived to attain godhood by replacing his body with animal parts, hoping to be inhuman enough to ascend to godhood. logos respected the grind but hubris is still a crime, so they should probably punish his soul post death. pathos got into a debate over the fact logos is the most hubris person ever, of course she'd say that, and psyche allowed him to be a minor god of persistence and change as a compromise. he's more like a patron saint than a god in his own right, people pray to him for minor things these days, like personal growth or doing good on a test.
castor is the god of entropy and injustice. despite this, he's not generally a misanthropic god. instead, he's the god you turn to when you need strength in the face of an uncaring universe. fighting an oppressive system, getting vengeance for your suffering, seeing the beauty in decay, that kind of thing. he's representative of pathos' domain in justice and the cruel world that requires it! the emotional motivation to do better is nothing without the logical understanding of how to do it, though.
his twin pollux is the misanthropic one, representing apathy and downward spirals. she's the embodiment of the kind of nothingness you feel while trapped in depression. despite this seeming like an emotional thing, it's instead symbolic for the pit you can fall into when you can't feel emotions healthily. so she serves under logos because, while logos represents progress, that doesn't mean anything without the emotional drive to move forward.
charon is a chthonic god, specifically of judgment and passage into the underworld! charon is under psyche, who's The god of the underworld {taking care of souls and all that}, and he's basically a collector of souls that try to escape them - think thanatos trying to take sisyphus, who refused to die naturally. but it often gets into trouble with psyche because it likes to "play with his food" before taking them to it. they appreciate a good game of cat and mouse, and they respect those particularly crafty mortals that successfully elude them. meanwhile psyche just wants him to do his fucking job.
lethe is a nature god, but in the same way early nature deities like pan also represented madness. he's a god of doomed journeys, mania, and overgrowth. he's the voice in your head that tells you to leave the well-trod path and lose yourself in the gnarled branches and twisted pathways. legend says you might enter his domain if you get lost in the woods, and if you do, you might never escape... used as a cautionary tale to keep kids from wandering off, but people also make offerings to it before going traveling or hiking as a way to avoid their journey ending poorly.

Theseus #10 (The Abduction of young Helen) With Theseus’ strength and greatness having spread throughout Greece, Pirithous, demigod king of the Lapiths, tests Theseus by stealing a herd of his cattle. But when Theseus rides him down, Pirithous courageously turns to meet him, and the two, respecting the others beauty and bravery, unite in friendship. Later, Theseus attends Pirithous’ wedding with his wife, Hippodamia, where the centaurs become drunk, and the violent battle of the Centauromachy takes place. Another episode has Theseus and Pirithous both vowing to wed Daughters of Zeus. First, they journey to Sparta, abducting the child Demi-god Helen, as she danced in the Spartan Temple of Artemis Orthia. Narrowly escaping the Spartan warriors in pursuit, Theseus later gives Helen to his mother for safekeeping until she comes of age. According to Homer, Pirithous was born from Zeus (in the form of a stallion), mating with Dia. While others place Pirithous as the son of King Ixion. Pirithous and Hippodamia give birth to a son, Polypoetes, who, having been one of the suitors of Helen, later became a famous hero of the trojan war. He led forty ships, and was even one of the warriors to hide in the trojan horse. Helen and her siblings have a bizarre and fascinating origin story. Helen’s mother was Leda, a beautiful Spartan queen. Zeus, lusting for her, transformed into a swan and flew into her embrace escaping an eagle, and the pair coupled. Leda also slept with her mortal husband, King Tyndareus, and later, born from two eggs were Helen and Clytmnestra and twin boys; Castor and Pollux. The Temple of Artemis Orthia was religious site for Spartan boys and girls. Orthia was originally a local goddess of fertility, nature, and vegetation. Later this goddess was combined with Artemis to create the dual goddess “Artemis Orthia.” Ancient scholars mention a rite-of-passage ceremony where young spartan boys were whipped as they attempted to steal cheese from the altar. Young girls had their initiations as well, with chorus dances and fertility rites.

“Where..are we? What is this place-?”
“DUDE LOOK!!! I found a SWORD!!”
“But that down! We don’t know if there’s anything on it-“
“Dude, look around. There’s no cordyceps here. There’s so many people! It’s so lively- I…”
“Yeah. I guess there is. I…we need to figure out where the hell we are.”
“IS THAT LAVA??? I wanna go-!”
“No percy.”

AU where Dio and Percy went through what Ellie and Joel did in the last of us, under different circumstances—the infection was from Tartarus, gods lost their power, and various people replaced the originals from TLOU.
But one day they were brought back to the normal PJO universe we know. Via a portal. This blog is them, trying to adjust to normal life again. In a world, (universe), where none of the horrible things they went through happened. And they meet other versions of themselves. Except, well, with their canon traumas.
This is my AU and will also include some of my own personal headcanons! Just a heads up.
Tumblr media
Names: Dionysus/Mr.D. Perseus/Percy Jackson.
Age: When Percy was teleported, he was fourteen in the universe he came from. Dionysus is just as always, millennia old.
Gender + Pronouns: Percy—AFAB, transmasc | He/Him. Dionysus—AMAB, genderfluid | (currently settling on) He/Him.
Sexuality: Percy—Bisexual. Dionysus—Pansexual.
Parentage: Percy—Sally Jackson and Poseidon. But he never actually gets to know his biological father until he’s brought into the original universe. His mom died the same way Ellie’s mom does because, Percy is immune. Dionysus—Zeus, who he hasn’t seen in years. Semele, who he hasn’t seen in years either and may be dead.
Tumblr media
Appearance: Percy—bite mark on his arm, which didn’t ever infect him. But does make a black spot on his veins in that area. Longer hair, which is messy and uneven. He couldn’t exactly cut it well during the apocalypse. They didn’t have time. More scars, and wears older clothes. Dionysus—had long hair for a while, but chopped it off when it started becoming a problem. He cut it off with a weapon he found, not scissors, so it’s messy and uneven. The curls do still show. Has more scars because he turned mortal, including the one on his right temple like Joel. In this AU, like how Sarah died, Castor and Pollux die.
Some Personality traits: Percy—somehow more sassy. He annoys the shit out of people for fun. Also more on edge and defensive, paranoid and calculating. He’ll be aggressive when you first meet, forgetting that not everyone is out to get him anymore. Dionysus—colder now. He’s protective (of Percy), always has his guard up and is on edge, very suspicious of people, and carefully plans out every interaction he has with most people. Also forgets that not everyone is out to get him anymore.

In character tags:
the water is poisoned. 💧 (just Percy.)

My HCs what they look like
Pollux he/him
Built like a rugby lock. 6'5, big guy, chubby (!), thick wrists and fingers, big hands, broad shoulders, one of the strongest campers in terms of brute strength. BICEPS.
Fluffy blonde hair, cowlick left temple which always stands up
Square face (think like Nick from Heartstoppers), straight nose, thick eyebrows
Brilliant purple eyes, long blonde eyelashes
Full and quite girlish lips, normally grinning
Mole under his eye like Caz
Exclusively wears kilts and knitted jumpers, workboots
Caz (Castor) they/them
You wouldn't think they and Pollux were twins
Lean and lithe, 6'2, seems taller than they are, angular quite elegant hands, easy way of moving,
Pink hair, wavy-curly, natural hair colour is a deep secret
Loads of moles, nose piercing, loads of ear piercings
Purple eyes, slightly lighter than Pollux's - more like violet, Lee is low-key obsessed, dark eyelashes that almost looks like they're wearing eyeliner. Dark brows
Aphrodite kids gave them a charm so they never have to shave their face which helped heaps with dysphoria <3
nice collarbones
Very mischievous grin, rarely not smiling
knows they're hot
varied dress sense. cool jackets, crop tops, wide-legged jeans, patterned button down shirts with sleeves rolled, palazzo pants, docs, tailored slacks, eclectic. HATES tight/skinny trousers and the camp shirt. Will not be caught dead in either
Theo (oc) she/her (when older)
Shorter than her siblings, when she's full grown about 5'5,
Curly dark hair, tends to keep it close-cropped to cheek-length
really light grey eyes, very soulful, and super dark eyelashes,
high-cheekbones, sharp jaw, lips a perfect pout,
throat something an artist would faint at
very androgynous (like her dad -- clearly effeminate but there's a boyishness there too)
likes to wear glitter round her eyes
excellent dress sense, very 20s-30s inspired (despairs over Will's fashion choices). Makes the campshirt look great somehow
Takes heavily after Mr D as he looks classically
Lee he/him
just a hair shorter than Caz, 6'2, surfer body, tan, biceps (!), stronger than he looks, leggy
spitting image of his father -- but definitely in his boyish youth way. Lee can't grow facial hair to save his life
Curling gold hair,
sharp jaw, nice arch to his neck, noticeable Adam's apple
blue-green eyes (one of the differences between him and Apollo), dark curled lashes
long, flat nose, classically handsome
light dusting of freckles everywhere
great arms
blonde leg hair
Comfy running shoes, baggy shirts OR singlets, no inbetween, has been known to wear dungarees,
Will he/him (when older)
Taller than Lee and loves it, 6'3, surfer body, tan, broad shoulders, very muscled arms
Also spitting image of his dad, he and Lee could pass as full siblings. But he's overall taller and broader and just bigger somehow. Like. He's A presence
Curling golden hair, tighter curls than Lee and a little frizzy because he doesn't take great care of it
FRECKLED. Freckles upon freckles,
Dimples, slight gap toothed, jawline to melt on
Ready smile, baby blue eyes
sun tattoo
The worst sense of style in the worldTM. Huge fan of the campshirt

The Prophet Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath
Artist: Cornelis van Poelenburch (Dutch, (1594-1667)
Date: c. 1630
Medium: Oil on panel
Collection: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, United States
Description
Cornelis van Poelenburch was an important representative of the first generation of Dutch artists who drew inspiration from the landscape and culture of Italy. He is celebrated for his small-scale paintings of arcadian, biblical, or mythological subjects that featured figures in an Italianate landscape, often with Roman ruins. This work was painted in Utrecht, after the artist had spent nearly a decade in Italy, and although the landscape setting here is imaginary, the ruin on the left is based on the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Roman Forum, built in 495 BC.
The Prophet Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath illustrates the biblical story of the encounter between prophet Elijah and a widow and her son gathering sticks when he arrives at the town of Zarephath. Elijah asks her for a piece of bread, and the destitute widow invites him to her home where she uses her last bit of flour and oil to bake for him. The prophet then blesses the woman and her child, and assures them that their supplies of flour and oil will never be diminished. Shortly thereafter the son dies, but because of Elijah’s fervent prayers, God returned the boy to life.
1 Kings 17:8-16 (NIV)
Then the word of the LORD came to him: “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’ ” She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.

Would pay money for an extra book that just went into Camp Jupiter’s war games + Camp Half-Blood capture the flag.
Includes rules, notable games, common strategies, and general information about them.
Would anyone else want that? No idea. Would I want that so I don’t have to keep thinking about it because my list of posts I have lined up is getting longer and longer, yes.
Okay that’s it :3
*Ignore what I’ve said about Aphrodite cabin post, temple hill post, that castor, Pollux, and Dakota post I’m gonna make a post about the games.
