It’s rooting nicely and I look forward to putting it outside this summer.

I am still waiting with bated breath, especially since it seems that the others aren’t rooting well or their radicles are shriveling, but I have at least one seemingly healthy Tephrocactus geometricus (purple variant) seedling! (8 days after sowing.)

It looks like a little totoro friend with its stumpy cotyledons. 🥺🥺🥺

Updates incoming; brace for plants.

@strawberrycinema and I have been on the hunt for some Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile, serving my enemy Asteraceae) for a while. Assuming it weathers the transition to my porch, it’ll be a fun new perennial and another useful presence.

This little dicotyledonous fella is Tephrocactus geometricus, or it will be once it hits the point of chunky ensoulment and I stop having to babysit it. The fact that it germinated at all is amazing, but it’s a long road from here to it being safely established.

All the way from Serbia it was, and I gotta say it’s imbued with high hopes. The last of six. A trooper, really. Everything rides on him.

Nestled among this very from-the-hip setup are some ironwort (Sideritis syriaca, blessed Lamiaceae) seeds. I’ve wanted this stuff since my lucky little jaunt on the Mani peninsula — it makes a really interesting tea and it was properly captivating in habitat. I spent a few hours hiking to and poking around a ruined stronghold full of spent Sideritis husks last summer, and I’ve been chasing that high ever since.

Ada (for sure Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia, possibly species ionanthushas, Gesneriaceae) has been in continuous bloom since at least early October. Five overlapping sets of flowers. Thank you, friend. I promise I’ll dust her off soon.

A few weeks ago, I dragged @fallonbean out to watch me get the ink I’ve considered for ages. A partial copy (23 of 61 lines) of Ötzi’s medicinal tattoos, which my family’s joked about since I got into the case as a kid. Now that they’re healed it feels like I should share with you nerds.

If there’s interest I’d be happy to do a proper writeup on the tattoos (mine and original), the scholarship around them, and the case in general. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how interested people are, and I’m always down to geek out about everyone’s favorite 5,300-year-old müder victim.
