was doing some digging on emotional intelligence because I got sick of hearing the phrase mindlessly repeated by corporate flack journalists to praise CEOs; kind of wondered where that bullshit came from. it turns out there are two kinds of literature on EI, the kind intended for publication in scientific journals & the kind intended for pop writing. It's a truism in pop writing that "emotional intelligence" is real and correlated with transformative leadership, but if you read the actual papers they're some of the most weakly correlated shit ever ostensibly measured by science and the nature of the correlation is not really explored. (do people with high EI - let's just assume it's a real thing you can measure - do well in leadership roles? Do they tend to be drawn to leadership roles or thrust into them by the nature of their high EI? Are both leadership (hence the capacity for transformative anything) and high EI typical results of a specific life trajectory? Who can fucking say.)
The pop literature treats this link as (a) slam-dunk certain and (b) causative, so it's become de rigeur to praise bloodless vampires firing half their staff for emotional intelligence on account of the number went up and that means Transformative Leadership.
The true kicker for me, though, is that even the scientific literature is hideously flawed. The methodology is shot-in-the-dark stuff and several papers have raised the question of what the tests actually measure, with the strongest candidate to me personally actually being conformity - on account of people who score high on EI tests typically give answers to questions and tests that either comport with the testmakers' assumptions or, worse, which comport with the average response of a testing group

Holy shit, I just found this picture of all the SAT/ACT prep books I worked my way through in high school, not to mention all the online tests and questions of the day that I did. It’s wild to look back and think about how much effort I put into tests that ultimately don’t matter in the long run. (5 years, y’all! I studied for these tests for 5 effin’ years!)
In honor of this nostalgia trip, I figured I’d share some of the tricks and tips I meant to compile into a post 3 years ago. The tests have changed since I took them, but this should be evergreen advice. I scored a 2330 SAT and a 35 ACT with these tips, for what it’s worth.
Don’t try to master the test material; learn how to beat the test. These tests are not like the finals your Lit and Algebra teachers are going to give you at the end of the year. You could learn the raw material, but learning to beat the test is much more efficient. Learn what grammar rules and math formulas they’re more likely to test so you know what formulas to apply first. Memorize a few stock essay templates, a few emotional but morally ambiguous stories and examples, and whip out essays that are little more than eloquent Mad Libs. Figure out how the test makers are going to try and waste your time, and then learn to counteract those tricks.
Understand why the wrong answers are wrong, not just why the right answers are right. Make sure you sit down after every practice test and go through every single question, even the ones you got right, to understand why each answer choice was presented to you, why each wrong answer is wrong, and why the right answer is right. The testmakers often function on the principle of the “least incorrect” answer, not the “most correct” answer. Being able to identify distractors will help you narrow down what the testmakers want you to pick. Moreover, understand what errors you made that led to you picking the wrong answer, and then make a concerted effort to recognize and preemptively correct those errors the next time you take the test.
Start studying early, especially if you aren’t aiming for a near-perfect score. I’d recommend hitting the books the summer after your freshman year. Pick up the subject that’s the least daunting for you, and get good at it. Once you have confidence in your abilities, move on to another section. With some aggressive studying, you might be able to get a score you’re happy with by sophomore spring or junior fall; my sophomore SAT score would have earned me a half ride to my state university. Get the tests done early when you have fewer obligations so you can focus on college apps, extracurriculars, and just having some free time when things get really hectic.
You probably don’t have to take both the SAT and the ACT. Most colleges accept both, though some colleges accept only one. See if all of your colleges of interest accept one of the two tests, and then focus your attention on that test only. If all your colleges accept either test, focus your efforts on the test that is easier for you.
Practice, practice, practice. The primary reason I kicked ass at standardized tests is that I knew practically every trick, question type, and shortcut in the book. Learn this test better than you know the back of your hand. Your most useful skill going into these tests is going to be your ability to ignore distractors so you can immediately start attacking the questions. Get used to the format. Get used to the time constraints. Memorize the directions at the beginning of each section so you don’t have to waste time reading them on test day. Don’t just do 2 or 3 practice tests and say “well, I basically know everything I need to know.” You don’t. The test makers live to use everything you don’t know on the test.

How the Write Communications Section of The BEC Exam Tutorial?
Student Questions on the Written Communications Section
Since the BEC Exam is the only CPA exam with a section on business writing, then students naturally have a lot of questions on it. The most common questions I hear include: “How do I start preparing for it?” “How is it graded?” and “Do you have any tips on passing it?”
When I took the BEC exam, I passed with a near-perfect score of 98, and in this article, I am going to share the same study tools with you that I used myself. We will address the exam structure, how the exam is graded, tips for preparing, and an outline strategy.
Exam Structure
After completing the first four testlets on the BEC exam, students move to the fifth and final testlet, which is on written communications. In this section, students write three business documents (essays) that make up 15% of the student’s BEC score. Keep in mind that only two of the three essays count toward the student’s score, since one of the essays is “pretested,” meaning that it’s being tested to officially include in future CPA exams. Of course, you will not know which essay is pretested, so give each one your best.
After reading the writing prompt, students are then required to write a relevant and well-structured essay. There is no requirement on the number of paragraphs; the exam simply requires a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Personally, I like the four-paragraph structure, because it allows for two full body paragraphs without taking too long.
Grading of the Written Communications Section You might be surprised to learn that the written communications section is almost always graded by a computer instead of a human, which we can use as a strategy for preparing. If a student is close to the passing threshold, then a human scorer will grade the essay instead.
What are the criteria for a high score on the written communications section? The testmakers evaluate the essays according to two main criteria: technical writing and writing skills. Technical writing refers to how helpful the writing is to the audience and how relevant it is to the issue. You can think of this as the focus of the content area of the essay. For example, if the writing prompt focuses on debt financing, then all of your content needs to be relevant to debt financing. A crucial part of technical writing is making sure you incorporate as many relevant keywords into your essay as possible.
With the essays being graded by computers, my personal opinion is that every sentence does not have to be perfect. Focus on including relevant terms and the proper use of English, but don’t get too worked up over perfection. It is a business essay, after all, not a New York Times Bestseller.
Writing skills refers to the organization and expression of ideas, meaning that students need to properly organize the essay into an introduction, body, and conclusion. Additionally, students need to implement clear sentence structure, in addition to using proper grammar and spelling.
Preparing for the Written Communications Essays
You might be asking, “Should I specifically prepare for the written communications section?” Well as you are preparing for the other sections of the BEC exam, you are indirectly studying for the written communications section. For example, if you’re studying the IT section and learning key terms about topics like firewalls, then if you get a writing prompt about the pros and cons of firewalls, you will already be prepared—the relevant vocab will already be in your mind. Because of this indirect studying, I don’t find it very useful to study for specific content (technical writing) for the written communications section.

I am. Very stressed. And nervous. And also my phone isn’t charged so that’s fantastic but also I couldn’t really sleep like a normal person in the night so :/
Anywho, Idk. Idk why I’m so nervous, maybe I’ve been conditioned this way LOL but. I think it’s okay if I attach less infinitely  large value to this test. I’m going to just look forward to not having to study freaking Piaget and endocrine hormones anxiously for days, weeks, and months. It’s so weird, like a final wrap-up of my whole summer. I guess ideally I want 520+ but that’s sorta unrealistic, so I just want to do okay enough to get into an okay school. And not hold myself up to any ultimatum.
I feel like I do best when I’m nonchalantly doing practice tests and I know the test center is going to be WACK AS HELL but, hopefully I can sorta emotionally shut down enough to do the best on my test (oo rhyme). I’m more nervous that I’ll forget something there and not get refunded LOL. But hopefully that won’t be a problem since I’ve checked what they want and have multiple back-ups. I think it’ll be okay.
Yeah. At the end of the day, I have no idea what the testmakers put on the exam or what tricks they slide in with their greasy aamc hands, so all I can do is focus on what I can each step of the test. Ear buds are meh but. Maybe I won’t need them? Would be cool if no one starts crying there because I think I would feel super bad and sorry for them... But I can’t really help them in that scenario, so I hope it works out for them no matter what happens.
Maybe it’ll go super bad. :/ But honestly going the PhD only path isn’t a terrible choice nor is it one that I’m opposed to. I’m pretty flexible with what I want in my life, I feel. I think I would feel bad financially wasting resources, but... :/ That’s also a :/ thing I think... I can’t change that anymore, nor is it useful to compare myself to other people who have less/ more than me. I think I’ll do just okay and that’s okay.
So. I don’t have too much to fear, maybe I’ll forget crap or whatever but even if I forget something here, I probably remembered something there, etc. I think I just gotta stay calm and see if there are other ways to finagle the answer (and if not I’ll just guess, which is something I’m p good at anyway :P). I think I just have to be focused during my test. Focused in my nonchalant way. I think I can relax after getting through the check-in. I’ll take a deep breathe and start the C/P section. Hopefully take momentary breaks every now and then to re-focus. And also for CARS and B/B, and P/S.
I think I’ve personally worked really hard this summer, and also this summer’s been hard for a lot of reasons, like not being able to go back to Vassar and also K. But I think, like what R said, my hard work will hopefully pay off and I’ll do okay on the test. I guess a miracle would be nice, but even if I don’t get what I would love to score, I think I’ll be okay no matter what happens. :) And also thank fuck I’ll be DONE. By tonight, I never have to take this goddamn exam again (because I think if it’s so bad it’s something I would have to retake, I think I’ll just do PhD-only or something. I mean, maybe not but we’ll see.)

I also can't remember if this was a district thing or because we used Scantron bubble sheets but testmakers couldn't put more than 3 of the same letter answer in a row without breaking it up with a different letter. In other words, there couldn't be 4 C's in a row.
I think it was because the Scantron grading was automated since I'm pretty sure teachers who made non-scantron multiple choice stuff could still do that.
Every single time I say the phrase “I was classically trained in the art of multiple choice tests” everyone in the room who’s not a millennial laughs at my joke while all the other millennials in the room immediately look like they just walked in on a funeral by accident.

How I Scored a 98 on the BEC Exam?
When I took the BEC exam, I passed with a near-perfect score of 98, and in this article, I am going to share the same study tools with you that I used myself. We will address the exam structure, how the exam is graded, tips for preparing, and an outline strategy.
Exam Structure
After completing the first four testlets on the BEC exam, students move to the fifth and final testlet, which is on written communications. Of course, you will not know which essay is pretested, so give each one your best.
Tumblr media
Grading of the Written Communications Section
The testmakers evaluate the essays according to two main criteria: technical writing and writing skills. Technical writing refers to how helpful the writing is to the audience and how relevant it is to the issue. You can think of this as the focus of the content area of the essay. For example, if the writing prompt focuses on debt financing, then all of your content needs to be relevant to debt financing. A crucial part of technical writing is making sure you incorporate as many relevant keywords into your essay as possible.
Preparing for the Written Communications Essays
Even though you don’t need to prepare for the content of the essays, you might need to prepare your writing skills. If writing essays is not your forté, or if English is not your first language, then I would suggest spending time developing your writing skills. Find a writing topic that interests you and then practice writing brief four-paragraph essays on the topic. After you write the essay, then you want to review it to learn from your mistakes. I recommend going to the free and incredibly useful proofreading website Grammarly.com. Grammarly will analyze your writing for errors and suggest alternate wordings. Through writing essays and then analyzing them, your English writing abilities will steadily improve.
