This is the the 8th entry of 'Since I've Been Gone' taken on 2019 9th July, my 26th birthday and back from Auckland. This webbed case belongs to the evergreen bagworm moth (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis), they weave cases mixed with silk and plant matter for camouflage. As the name implies, this species specializes in evergreen trees, Coppell Nature Park is ideal with the red cedar that cover it. The females will stay in larval form, while males become adult moths seeking female pheromones. Once mated, the females will die and the offspring hatch from the eggs inside her and emerge from her body and case to start the cycle over. Of course, this one looks like it's dead based on the small hole on the right implying a parasitoid wasp must have found it. This is the 8th Part of my series 'Since I've Been Gone'. On the same day as the previous post, I found moth known as a sad underwing (Catocala maestosa) as it's camouflaged against tree bark. The adults show themselves during July-October, so I was just in time to see it. This is the 230th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on 2021 5th March during my time with @americanconservationexperience, I found another of those hairy panther ants (Neoponera villosa), but this time I kept my distance. Apparently, there are even queenless colonies of these ants whose dominance hierarchy is established through biting and boxing. I actually was unfortunate enough to get stung on the neck by one of these in my tent during one of the nights we stayed in Brazoria, but this one wasn't the one that bit me. This is the 162nd installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same day as the last post during my time with @americanconservationexperience, I knew that harvester ants, including these red harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus), were seed-harvesters. In hopes to see their harvesting in action, I gave them a prickly pear fruit I opened up to see them go at it while I worked. This picture was I came back later, finding that they seemed more intent on getting rid of the fruit than making a meal of it; they covered the wet parts in sand, removed seeds to the edges of the nest, and removed whatever else they could to also be added onto the edge of the nest.
