andromeda | (dybmn? bonus)
a bonus vignette from spencer's POV. we find out how he really feels about reader. takes place the day before the argument at the bar.
note: this is not part six! takes place between parts four and five.
series masterlist
18+ warnings/tags: fem!reader, semi-graphic descriptions of sexual fantasies, some angst, you're not actually present, mention of alcohol, very vague discussions of murdery stuff bc he's supposed to be working, sassy spencer makes an appearance a/n: for all my angels who said they wanted a snippet of spencer's POV! i'm sorry if i'm overdoing it with this story or clogging the spencer tags, i'm just having a lot of fun! i hope you enjoy or that this may be clears some things up for you, pls lmk your thoughts:) ily!!!
Spencer is incessantly drumming the particle board table underneath his fingers.
The polymer veneer is one of his least favorite textures—he hates the grain of it and if he were to accidentally scratch the table with his nails he knows it would make the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
But of all the things he’s worried about, that ranks very low on the list.
He’s got a lot of mental tabs open all the time—and the tabs, he can deal with. It’s when he starts trying to operate with multiple windows that he begins to struggle. His brain, while it is a very fine tuned sort of computer, only has one monitor. Unfortunately, no human (except for the ones who’ve had their brain hemispheres surgically split) is immune to the inevitable pitfalls of multitasking. By dividing his mental energy between you and his job, he’s really fucking up his job. But he also thinks he really fucked up with you on that phone call the other night and for being as logical as he is he can’t seem to make that feel unimportant—even though he’s disgusted with himself for it because there are literally people dying.
Someone knocks on the open conference room door—he looks up, skimming his lips over his fist.
“What’s up?” he says too quickly upon seeing Emily’s mildly concerned face peering in on him.
Her mouth bridges into a sort of nonchalant frown and her brows kick up.
“Just… checking in. Haven’t heard from you all morning.”
“Yeah, the, uh—the geo-profile. I’m still… I’m still working it out.”
It’s not like he’s ever been phenomenal with his syntax in a social sense, but Spencer is certainly aware he’s doing even worse than usual right now.
“Okay. Uh… is there anything in particular stumping you, or…?”
“Nope. Just not enough information. But I’m—I’m going to keep trying.”
“Alright. Got your phone handy?”
It’s an odd question—of course he has his phone handy. He’s been doing this job longer than Emily has. How else would he communicate with the rest of the team? He bristles.
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t I?”
Emily shakes her head. She’s always been particularly good at reading his moods.
“You’re not under attack, Reid. I was just asking.”
Just as he’s about to say, why would you assume I’m not prepared for my job, he manages to swerve away and stifle the words with his fist. Instead he looks back down at his copy of the map and nods. In reality, he truly isn’t prepared for his job today. The reason he has his phone so close, fully charged and at top volume is because he’s worried he’ll miss a call from you.
Emily says something else, and he hums in response, and then she’s gone.
He shouldn’t be reading into your reticence this much. It’s not like you just sit by the phone all day, eagerly awaiting a call or text from him (like he does you). You have a life. You’re busy. And even if you are intentionally dodging his texts, he can’t entirely fault you for it. Spencer knows he’s clingy. He knows he’s overbearing. It’s part of why he panicked the other night and told you the whole humiliating story about Elle. Because he can’t ever just be cool and he felt the need to explain himself.
But the problem was, and is, that he doesn’t know how much longer he can go without saying those three words that fucked him over all those years ago.
So he’d danced around them. Applied them to someone else to try and avoid outright professing his all-consuming love for you over the phone. However you feel, Spencer has to assume he feels more. Spencer always has to assume he feels more because he usually does and it’s gotten him into trouble before. And now he’s pretty sure he was exactly right, as often is the case, because you didn’t tell him he was mistaken and you’d clammed up and you haven’t talked to him since and he’s not supposed to be reading into it this much.
Three victims killed and dumped within a 6 mile radius of the first victim plus one victim killed and dumped 23.8 miles away. That doesn’t make any fucking sense. Fuck this guy.
Spencer decides the problem is that he needs more caffeine.
Or possibly, if he were a different kind of man—copious amounts of alcohol.
So he stows his phone in a pocket and asks the first person he sees where the coffee machine is.
“Looks like you found it earlier,” the woman says, glancing pointedly down at his mostly empty mug. A playful smirk tugs at pinkish-brownish lips. She’s pretty, he realizes distantly. But he registers it the same way he’d take note of the model of a car, or the species of a bird, or the kind of shoes someone is wearing. It doesn’t actually interest him. It’s just part of processing his environment. “I can show you to it?”
He doesn’t have the heart or energy to explain that someone else brought him his cup earlier and he’s not flirting with her.
“If you could just point me in the right direction…?”
She laughs, short and dry, before she’s pointing down a hall.
“Kitchenette down there and to the left.”
“Thanks,” he mutters, already walking away without sparing her a second glance.
She’s the kind of woman he would have paid a lot more attention to before you came along. Not that he’d ever sleep with someone on the job (not since he was 25, anyway), but if he’d met her under any other circumstances he probably would have cared more about the way her pupils dilated and her eyes had widened slightly and she’d adjusted her posture and all the other small things people do when they’re attracted to someone else. 30 year old Spencer might have slept with her. 27 year old Spencer definitely would have slept with her. Current Spencer obsessively pines for a woman who is already his girlfriend and whom he has yet to sleep with at all far too much to think about other women like that.
But god, does he think about you like that.
His feet carry him down the dim, carpeted hallway but really it took barely a nudge and he’s thinking about you like that. At work. As he’s pouring himself coffee.
Spencer is confident in the fact that if anyone were to look at him right now, they’d never guess he’s running clips of you in his mind like a dirty supercut. Because he’s just pouring coffee. That’s one good thing about having all those tabs open all the time. He can toggle between them quickly. He has enough going on in the background that people look at him and all they can tell is that he’s thinking hard about lots of things. Some of them just happen to be the way you look when you’re naked on his bed, skin shining and glazed eyes sleepy, parted lips higher in color than usual and catching your breath. Some of them happen to be your hair brushing his stomach before he gathers it back for you. Some of them happen to be the way your thighs feel on either side of his face, or how you stretch around his fingers, or how you might feel when you stretch around his—
He hisses as hot coffee overflows from the mug and burns his hand.
Maybe he’s not as calm and collected as he thought.
But on top of all the other things he’s dealing with, having been so close to actually sleeping with you the other night is really fucking with his head. Even if he tells himself he wouldn't have done it, he knows himself better than that. He's too familiar with the effect you have on his judgement.
“Found it okay?”
Spencer looks down, surprised to see the woman from earlier sitting at her desk and watching him as he quickly passes by on his way back to the conference room. Her legs are crossed. She’s wearing a pencil skirt and a flouncy sort of blouse which seems impractical for working in an FBI field office. Maybe she notices his eye catching on her figure and misguidedly swivels her chair to give him a better look. But all he’s noticing is that it doesn’t look like yours. Now he’s picturing the curve of your hip dripping in silk after that first night at Rossi’s. How your waist and your stomach feel when he slides his hands over you. This woman—she might as well not even be here for all he’s actually seeing her.
“Yeah. Thanks again.”
Then he’s gone. Very briefly he acknowledges that he should feel sorry for so obviously brushing her off, but he doesn’t care even close to enough. He sets the coffee down on the table and rounds to the board where one of several maps is taped. On autopilot he draws lines between dump sites because one of the background tabs had deduced, while he was busy watching you like porn, that the distance between dump sites form the beginnings of the constellation Orion with some mathematical precision that’s too exacting to be coincidental. Orion’s Belt plus the most recent victim. Betelgeuse.
There are ten formally named stars that make up Orion. He marks all of them, but circles the transposed coordinates of Bellatrix, Saiph, Rigel and Meissa as the next most likely dump sites. Most probably it will be Orion’s head. They’re all in wooded areas. He calls Garcia. Garcia will call Emily, wherever she is. If the unsub sticks to pattern, which they always do, they have until midnight. It’s trite, really. Predictable, like people always are. Far too quickly he drinks half the cup of scalding coffee and retraces his steps through the office to find the bathroom.
It’s empty. The fluorescent lights hum. Spencer washes his hands with cold water and presses still wet fingers to his eyes. You’re waiting for him behind the black of his lids.
At first you would whine, and he would kiss you and you’d moan into his mouth and say his name when he opened you up as far as you would go. The air would be thick and warm with sex and vanilla perfume. Afterwards he’d take care of you and buy new sheets for his bed in your favorite color even if they didn’t match the walls and there would be nothing you’d want for that he couldn’t give to you ever again.
But.
That’s all contingent.
No matter how often he fantasizes about it, no matter in how much detail, and regardless of how often those details change wildly, one thing always stays the same.
The shape of your lips, swollen from kissing, bending around five or six vowels and only two consonants (it seems odd that there are only two consonants in I love you), sometimes before you start, sometimes in the middle or right at the peak—but always there, always moving in slow motion—and always silent.
In real life, they’d be aloud. It’s why his fantasies aren’t good enough. It’s why he can’t stop fantasizing about it. That’s the only part that really matters to him. The rest varies.
Not because having sex with you doesn’t matter—it matters so much he almost shatters his molars whenever he starts picturing it around other people. But because Spencer can’t have sex with you until you love him.
And he worries that you can’t love him until you have sex with him.
The last time he thought that about a person, it didn’t turn out well.
Maybe there is some magic number. Some amount of times you need to have sex with someone before they’ll love you back.
If there is, he knows for a fact it’s more than 32.
And he also knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he cannot have loveless sex with you thirty three times while he waits to find out.
Not again.
But he's going to hold out as long as he possibly can until you say it because he so badly wants you to love him back. He'll let the weight of every ignored text, every reminder that you don't feel that way about him, hang from his shoulders until he collapses. And then he'll probably try to get back up.
Recycled paper towels scratch against his skin. He dries his face and hands and throws them crumpled into the trash can.
Outside the restroom, he pulls out his phone. For safety reasons and paranoia disguised as professionalism, you’re not his lock screen. It’s a photo of the Andromeda Galaxy. Whatever distance lies between you and Spencer, it could always be greater. No matter where you are in the world, you will always be the same 2.537 million light years away from Andromeda that he is.
It makes Orion feel much closer. You, too.
He sends you a text—the third message in a row.
The distance between blue bubbles feels like light years.
I’ll be home tomorrow. I miss you.

I have a question about your prep for oil painting, or more like when ur practicing. Do you use a specially treated paper to practice with oils (studies, quick thumbnail sketches, etc) before using canvas or do you just sketch ideas, layout on canvas and then under paint? I enjoy the medium a lot but I actually want to sketch and do studies in oil (without much drawing involved) but don’t want to waste canvas. Also hate painting gesso over stuff repeatedly. Is paper something you have tried? Any advise would be appreciated o wise onion painter
Ok, so as for my personal habits, I tend to do "Practices" digitally [I have a tablet and SAI] or sometimes on paper like so: [garlic is pencil on paper, rest are digital]. I do draw thumbnails but they are usually in marker or pencil in my sketchbook, and are little more than like, very stylized symbols representing subjects or different compositional patterns. Most of my painting planning and composition happens via digital photo collages.
Tumblr media
The rest of my very long answer is under the readmore
I'll do colour studies occasionally if I'm feeling particularly anxious about a picture, OR if it has a colour range that I am yet unfamiliar with. I have done a couple colour studies for my current big picture with the cattle, one I did on location so I could have an example of the colours present in the landscape to my eye, and another of a seascape because this cattle picture will be my first significant effort to include the blue colour range into my vocabulary, and also to spend some hours painting clouds to get a feel for them. [for context, when I began with my current method of painting I began only painting white objects against back fabric with a value range from chromatic black to titanium white and then added in new colour ranges one by one once I was fluent in all of the preceding colour ranges] When it comes to your practice [and I mean "Practice" as in everything you paint overall] I think you might find canvas panels very helpful, as they take up very little space BUT they are still rigid and therefore don't need to be taped to a board or anything. They also come in a really wide variety of sizes and are very affordable. If you enjoy using canvas paper then you should continue what you are doing, but try different kinds of surfaces. Some people prefer to do oil paintings on sheets of copper. There will be a material that suits your style and your personality, you just have to find out what it is. I like belgian linen, but others may prefer gesso'd particle board.
You have several points going on in your question, so I will address them individually:
Not wanting to "Waste Canvas" Canvas is not a precious commodity. It is a raw material which can be used in the process of painting, therefore, its value lies in the work hours and expertise of the craftsperson who uses it. One of the most common uses of canvas is in art training. So you are not "wasting canvas" by using it for the purpose of learning the skills necessary for painting: that is a perfectly acceptable use for canvas, and all other materials. I'm not "wasting" a pair of hiking boots by walking at the bottom of a mountain, I'm using them, and if I don't use the boots at the bottom of the mountain I will never get to use them at the top.
Putting Gesso over oil paintings Don't do this. Gesso is a water based paint so it dries much faster than the oil beneath it. If you want to paint over a painting you can either paint over it with a neutral oil colour, OR, just do the new painting over it without the middle stage. Some things to watch out for if you reuse canvas this way: Ridge lines [bits of textured paint from the previous painting sticking up through your new painting might take away from it], oil layers [remember the fat over lean rule when choosing a canvas to paint over. if you have high concentrations of oil, aka fat, on the canvas already, it might be better to choose a different canvas], dryness [try to only paint over pictures that have had a good amount of time to dry.] Basically all of these warnings are to prevent cracking and other conservator problems with your paintings. A good painting can happen to your canvas at any time and it would be a shame to paint something you really like and have it crack later from poor application.
"Without much drawing involved" Painting is "mass drawing" [shapes not lines] with colour, so you can't really avoid drawing if you want to paint. This doesn't mean you have to use pencil or other dry mediums if you don't want to though, painting a value study [mass drawing] with oil is a very popular technique which many employ. I'd recommend that you look into "imprimatura" and "grisaille", two methods of value painting used for oil.
In conclusion, I don't want to get all "just be yourself" in here, but i'd recommend you research the different techniques and materials available to you and pick the one that has the fewest barriers to your work flow, feels the best to work with, and creates the final product that you want to create. If you were me I would tell you to work on belgian linen stretched canvases and occasional cotton canvas panels, but you may prefer something different so that advice may not be helpful. Keep at it!

baby steps: noah marshall x mc
937 words. plotless. tw: mc is getting used to eating solid food again after being saved.
“So this is the famous french dip with au jus that I’ve heard so much about,” you grin, teasing Noah.
“You remember that,” he blushes.
You sniff, unsure about this. You’d been on a liquid diet for ages since coming back. It had been Tom and Connor’s plan since you threw up from fries. Keeping down food had been hard at first. Remembering to eat. Being alive was hard. It was shitty how hard the adjustment was after being a disembodied shadow for so long.
“You can just have the au jus if you don’t think you're ready,” Noah offers, leaning on the counter next to you. He’d cut the sandwich in half.
You take a deep breath, “I never want to have bone broth again,” you scowl, sick of it. Sick the lack of texture. “‘Sides,” you reach out for Noah’s hand, “how else am I gonna taste test the Baby Jane menu?”
“I still have to sign the lease,” Noah reminds you.
“Oh please,” you wave off, “they’d be crazy not to give you the place. Lot’s been empty since we were kids. I’m actually surprised it’s still standing, and right on the highway too.” Westchester was a small town. People only drove by on their way to New York City.
You pick at the sandwich first, tearing a piece of bread. “I still can’t believe you know how to bake.”
“It’s really easy,” Noah points out. “Salt. Flour. Yeast. Bread flour is the game changer. Not that all purpose stuff.”
You stick your tongue out at him.
“Don’t knock it till you try it.” The asshole winks at you.
You kick him lightly.
Then you have to pause to wiggle your toes. You had toes again.
You pinch your arm.
Yup. Still here. Alive.
You pop the piece of bread into your mouth.
“Mm.” Oh fuck it was good. Light and fluffy. You’d forgotten what chewing was like. Better than the store bought white bread that stuck to the roof of your mouth. Still, you tease Noah, “not bad.”
Noah puts a hand over his chest, “that’s it.”
You laugh at him, “okay. It’s really good. I’m surprised you don’t have your own starter.”
“I do actually,” Noah tells you, “gotta save that for the grilled cheese later. It’s mind blowing.”
You giggle. It was adorable how into cooking Noah could get. You didn’t know the difference between tri-tip and sirloin but you could listen to Noah go one about it for hours. You liked watching him move around the kitchen, shredding cheese and sauteing vegetables.
You had a newfound appreciation for the mundane. Anytime spent with Noah was special to you.
Next, you pull out a piece of the thinly sliced beef, popping it into your mouth before you chicken out.
It was. . .you chew, unable to place the flavor. . .you remember the cold seeping into your body, the wind going right past you, the smell of iron and rot and dirt in your jaw. . .
You grip the counter, swallowing the bite. You hope it stays down. You can practically feel it crawling down your throat, landing in your stomach with a heavy thud.
It felt wrong.
Eating, being solid-
It was so hard to get used to.
Stay down, you tell yourself. It was a tiny bite.
You were sick of pedialyte and strained chicken broth. You could do this. You’d managed to keep your sanity through it all, you could do anything.
“You okay,” Noah squeezes your hand.
You nod, “yeah. It’s nothing just…give me a moment.” It was hard to be human again.
“Maybe you should stick to bread? If it’s easier.”
He was so sweet. Noah who never left your side when you needed him most, who gave you all the space you needed to recover, who made you laugh when you felt like shattering. Noah Marshall who made it all worth it.
“No.” You insist, “Let me try another piece,” you decide when the slice of beef doesn’t give you nausea. When you manage to keep the bite down, you decide to have another.
This time you focus on the cheap particle board bar top in Noah’s tiny home. The entire neighborhood was rundown, but quiet. There were never any issues except the neighbors sunday get together that would go on until 2 in the morning.
Secretly you liked hearing the noise. It gave you something to focus on when you woke up from another nightmare back in that place.
You rip another piece with your fingers.
This time it’s juicy, the beef tearing to pieces easily. You lack the words, barely remembering food enough but it’s good. It’s a lot like deja vu, the flavor of beef was familiar but you couldn't remember how.
“I like it,” you tell Noah.
“Does it live up to expectations?” He flicks your nose.
You flip him off. “Company could be better.” You tear another piece of bread off. Small bites. You could do small bites. “I like getting to chew.” It sounds insane. “Fuck, that’s sad.” You slump in the bar stool.
“No,” Noah reassured you, “it’s cute.”
“Liar.”
“I’m not lying.”
“Okay,” you scrunch your nose up, “so we’re both pathetic.”
“Maybe,” Noah grins.
You laugh, covering your mouth with your hand.
Maybe you two were sad losers barely working on getting GEDs after flunking high school for supernatural reasons, but you wouldn’t want to be with anyone else. Things as simple as doing the dishes was tons of fun when you got to flick soap bubbles at Noah.
“So when do I get to try the grilled cheese?”

Wholesale Office Desk Purchasing Guide: How to Find Cost-effective Products
When purchasing office desks, especially in large quantities, companies typically focus on balancing price and quality to find cost-effective products. Wholesale office desks not only help businesses save costs but also enhance the overall functionality and aesthetics of the office space. However, with so many choices available, finding the right and reasonably priced product is not always easy. This article provides a guide to wholesale office desk purchasing to help you meet your needs while ensuring the best value.
1. Determine Your Budget
Before starting the purchasing process, it’s important to clearly define your budget. The price range of wholesale office desks varies widely, from budget-friendly basic models to high-end, stylish designs. Setting a reasonable budget will help you narrow down your options and ensure you don’t exceed your company’s spending plan.
It’s recommended to allocate the budget based on the needs of different office areas. For example, common work areas may require a large quantity of basic desks, while executive offices or conference rooms could opt for higher-quality, uniquely designed desks.
Tumblr media
2. Understand Material Differences
The material of an office desk greatly affects its price and user experience. Understanding the pros and cons of different materials can help you strike a balance between quality and cost when purchasing in bulk.
Wooden Office Desks: Solid wood desks offer great texture and durability but are typically more expensive. Composite wood or particle board desks are more affordable and suitable for companies with limited budgets. Metal Office Desks: Metal-framed desks provide sturdy construction and suit modern office styles, with prices usually in the mid-range. Glass Office Desks: Glass desks are stylish but can be difficult to maintain, making them suitable for areas that prioritize design. When purchasing, weigh the durability, maintenance cost, and appearance of different materials to find the most suitable product for your needs.

3. Functionality and Comfort
Office desks are more than just places to put computers and files; functionality is also a key factor in determining their value. When buying in bulk, prioritize desks with ergonomic designs. Desks with adjustable height, adequate workspace, and cable management systems can provide employees with a more comfortable and efficient working experience.
Additionally, different desk configurations may affect pricing. For example, desks with drawers, filing cabinets, or dividers may meet various office needs. Choosing functional desks based on the specific nature of the work and usage scenario can further enhance the value.

4. Find Reliable Suppliers
Finding a reliable supplier is crucial when purchasing wholesale office desks. Quality suppliers can not only provide good-value products but also offer excellent after-sales service and product warranties. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a supplier:
Quality Assurance: Ensure the supplier provides detailed product specifications and quality certification for the desks. After-Sales Service: Good after-sales service can provide peace of mind for bulk purchases, including installation, repair, and replacement services. Customer Reviews: Check the supplier’s customer reviews or case studies to learn about their reputation and product quality, helping you make an informed decision.
Tumblr media
5. Bulk Purchase Discounts and Negotiation
One of the advantages of buying office desks in bulk is the ability to get discounts. When negotiating with suppliers, not only can you secure a lower unit price, but you can also ask for additional services, such as free shipping, installation, or extended warranties.
Moreover, if your company has specific customization needs for the desks, such as embedding the company logo or selecting specific colors, bulk custom orders can offer more competitive pricing. Establishing a long-term relationship with the supplier often leads to better pricing and superior service.
Tumblr media
6. Consider Sustainability and Environmental Factors
In today’s eco-conscious office environments, more and more companies are considering the environmental attributes of office furniture. Choosing desks made from eco-friendly materials not only enhances the company’s image but also creates a healthier work environment for employees.
Some suppliers offer office desks made from environmentally friendly or sustainable materials. While the initial cost may be slightly higher, their durability and eco-friendliness can offer better value over the long term.
Tumblr media
7. Conclusion
When purchasing office desks in bulk, finding cost-effective products is not just about seeking the lowest price. It’s about considering various factors like budget, materials, functionality, and supplier reliability. By clearly defining your needs and carefully evaluating product quality and supplier services, your business can meet its office needs while maximizing the value of the desks. Highlights of solid hardwood furniture
Solid hardwood furniture is known for its quality, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Here are some key points about solid hardwood furniture:
Material: Made from planks or boards of solid wood, with no particle board or veneer. Each piece is cut from a single type of hardwood, such as oak, maple, walnut, or cherry.
Durability: Solid hardwood furniture is built to last, often outlasting furniture made from other materials. It can withstand daily use and can be passed down through generations.
Weight: Due to the use of solid wood, these pieces tend to be heavier than furniture made with other materials or construction methods.
Appearance: The natural grain and color variations of hardwood give each piece a unique and attractive look. Over time, the wood can develop a beautiful patina.
Finish: High-quality hardwood furniture is finished with durable coatings like lacquer, oil, or wax to protect and enhance the wood's natural beauty.
Sustainability: Hardwood furniture can be a sustainable choice if the wood is sourced from responsibly managed forests.
Cost: Solid hardwood furniture is generally more expensive than furniture made from engineered woods or veneers due to the quality and longevity of the material.
Maintenance: While hardwood furniture is durable, it may require more care than other types of furniture. This can include regular cleaning, avoiding extreme temperatures and humidity, and occasional refinishing.
Craftsmanship: Often, solid hardwood furniture is crafted using traditional joinery techniques, which can add to its value and appeal.
Variability: Each piece of hardwood furniture is unique due to the natural variations in the wood grain, color, and texture.
Market Demand: There is a strong market for solid hardwood furniture among consumers who value quality, durability, and the environmental impact of their purchases.
Customization: Some manufacturers offer customization options for hardwood furniture, allowing buyers to choose the type of wood, finish, and design details.
When purchasing solid hardwood furniture, it's important to consider the type of wood, the quality of craftsmanship, the finish, and the sustainability of the wood source. Additionally, understanding how to properly care for and maintain hardwood furniture will help ensure its longevity and beauty.

Mastering the Art of Concrete Finishing: Techniques and Tips
Concrete finishing is an essential process that transforms raw concrete into a durable and aesthetically pleasing surface. Whether you’re working on a patio, driveway, or indoor floor, the finishing stage significantly impacts the final look and functionality of the concrete. In this blog, we’ll explore key techniques and tips for achieving an impeccable concrete finish, ensuring your projects stand out in both form and function.
Tumblr media
Understanding Concrete Finishing
Concrete finishing involves the steps taken after the concrete has been poured and set to achieve a smooth, level, and attractive surface. This process can vary depending on the desired outcome, including the type of finish, texture, and color.
Techniques for a Perfect Concrete Finish
Screeding Screeding is the initial step in concrete finishing, which involves leveling the surface. A screed board is dragged across the top of the freshly poured concrete to remove excess material and create a flat surface. This step is crucial for ensuring an even base before any additional finishing techniques are applied.
Floating After screeding, the surface is smoothed out with a float. This tool helps to remove any small imperfections and brings the finer particles of concrete to the surface. Floating can be done using a hand float or a power float for larger areas.
Troweling Troweling is performed to achieve a polished and smooth surface. It involves using a trowel to work the concrete, which compacts the surface and removes any remaining blemishes. For a high-gloss finish, the surface may be troweled multiple times.
Texturing If you prefer a textured finish, various techniques can be used, such as brushing, stamping, or rolling. Texturing not only adds visual interest but can also enhance the slip resistance of the surface, making it safer for outdoor spaces like patios and walkways.
Sealing To protect the concrete and enhance its appearance, a sealant is applied. Sealers help to prevent stains, moisture infiltration, and surface wear. There are different types of sealers available, including penetrating, acrylic, and polyurethane, each offering unique benefits.
Tips for Achieving the Best Concrete Finish
Prepare the Surface Properly Ensure that the sub-base is well-compacted and level before pouring the concrete. Proper preparation minimizes the risk of cracking and other issues that can affect the final finish.
Work Quickly Concrete sets quickly, so it’s essential to perform finishing tasks promptly. Delays in finishing can result in an uneven surface and make the finishing process more challenging.
Use the Right Tools Invest in high-quality finishing tools suited for the job. Using the right equipment ensures a smoother finish and reduces the effort required to achieve the desired results.
Maintain Consistent Moisture Levels Proper curing is crucial for concrete durability and finish. Keep the surface moist and protected to prevent rapid drying, which can cause cracks and surface imperfections.
Consider the Environment Weather conditions can impact the finishing process. Avoid finishing concrete in extreme temperatures or high humidity, as these factors can affect the setting time and final appearance.
Common Questions About Concrete Finishing
Q: What is the best time to start finishing concrete? A: The best time to start finishing concrete is when the surface has set enough to support weight without deforming but is still wet enough to be worked. This is typically when the sheen on the surface has disappeared, and the concrete has stiffened slightly.
Q: How can I achieve a non-slip finish for my outdoor concrete surfaces? A: To achieve a non-slip finish, you can use texturing techniques such as brooming or stamping. Additionally, incorporating anti-slip additives into the sealant can enhance traction.
Q: What type of sealant should I use for high-traffic areas? A: For high-traffic areas, a durable and resistant sealant such as polyurethane is recommended. It provides a robust finish that can withstand heavy use and adverse weather conditions.
Q: Can I apply a colored finish to concrete? A: Yes, colored finishes can be applied using integral color mixes, stains, or dyes. These options allow you to customize the appearance of your concrete surface to match your design preferences.
Q: How do I fix minor imperfections in my concrete finish? A: Minor imperfections can be fixed by patching with a concrete repair compound and re-finishing the surface. For best results, ensure that the patched area blends seamlessly with the surrounding concrete.
Conclusion
Concrete finishing is a critical step in creating beautiful and durable concrete surfaces. By mastering the techniques and following best practices, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that enhances the appearance and longevity of your concrete projects. Whether you’re working on a residential or commercial space, understanding the art of concrete finishing will help you deliver outstanding results every time.
