I'm 30% into TGCF Book 5 and it seems like Xie Lian's only solution to any problem is kissing Hua Cheng. Which. I mean I'm not complaining but, man will take any opportunity to think 'maybe kissing Hua Cheng will fix this?'
I mean kissing Hua Cheng does seem to solve problems but, it's just very funny. Also Pei Ming pressing Eming to Xie Lian's lips— pei ming clocked hualian so fast it's great.

Underrated book 5 moments
🦋 Hua Cheng being salty about Qi Rong copying his blood rain aesthetic with the gaudy hanging corpse foolishness.
🦋 Xie Lian fully shoving a butchers knife in Qi Rong's mouth for endangering his San Lang.
🦋 Banyue offering to put the small, sick Hua Cheng in a little pot because that made her feel better too.
🦋 Pei Ming and his "childhood friend" naming his sword after their ship name (no homo tho).
🦋 Ling Wen & Pei Ming being actual best buddies.
🦋 Everyone fighting for their lives in the stomach of a mountain spirit while Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are having quality cuddle time.
🦋 Qi Rong profiling Xie Lian as a bottom.
🦋 Xie Lian seeing Quan Yizhen's proper autistic hyperfixation on martial arts and going "same :D".
🦋 Pei Ming acting like the great⁶ uncle he is and telling his nephew to shut up and eat his dinner.
🦋 This illustration. Look at that scary little face. Look at Xie Lian having the time of his life. 10/10

This might be nothing but I do enjoy how often the 4-3 rule shows up in tgcf
I'm currently reading Xie Lian reasoning that Mount Tonglu having only 3 mountain spirits is strange, as there are meant to be four, and Hua Cheng listing all the stories grouped in fours to reason him out of it
But 3 is as much of an important number as 4 in this story
"are there not 4 calamities?" no. There are 3 supremes and one "near supreme" (something that canonically, is not a thing)
"are there not four famous tales?" no. There are 3 famous tales and one stolen fate
The Xianle trio
The three tumours
Trios show up in this book as a rule almost as often as quartets and that might not even be meaningful at all but at the very least it is interesting
Also Hua Cheng lit three thousand lanterns for Xie Lian, which isn't a trio thing, but it's also not explained why he chose that number specifically so I'm gonna throw it in here

Jun Wu, in his battle against Hua Cheng: 'His weakness must be his other eye!! If I blind him, I'll get the upper hand!!'
*Successfully digs his other eye out*
*Hua Cheng keeps fighting normally*
Jun Wu: THE FUCK
Hua Cheng was using the wraith butterflies to see himself as a 3rd person videogame, so he's not actually blind in battle.

✨️TGCF Thoughts✨️
For those who keep up with the audio drama...how we feeling about this week's update?
Are we alive? Are we breathing? Are we foaming at the mouth and biting at the bars of our enclosures?
Just wanted to check in on everyone after this update 😌😌😌 I would say I have brain rot but that would indicate there are holes in a structure so I'm leaning towards brain melt

Headcanon:
Feng Xin taught himself to draw his bow with his teeth after he broke his own arm in book 2 so he wasn't a totally worthless bodyguard...
...the skill goes mostly unused until the final battle in book 5 when he saves Mu Qing

Spoiler alert from book 4 and 5
I need this book to stop saying "aroused" in regards to the effects of the abundant spiritual energy after Mount Tonglu opened, especially after that aggressive makeout scene between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian on that altar. It just gives things a whole different context XD.

The Cave of 10,000 gods as Hua Cheng's epic gamer moment (spoilers)
The more I think about it, the symbolism of Hua Cheng making all those dianxia statues right in the middle of Tonglu, Jun Wu's domain, is genuinely so epic-
Jun Wu was a man who through the bitterness and resentment of his own plight, set Xie Lian's fall from grace in motion and made him believe he was worthless, powerless and unworthy of simple dignity. His anger was the reason Mount Tong'lu erupted every so often with a new supreme according to Mei Nianqing, his anger was the reason for monsters coming out of the Kiln and causing chaos. Yet within the Kiln, there's a whole gazillion statues in reverence of the god Jun Wu was made so insecure by: in a place formed and shaped so heavily by hate, there's a cave signifying love. Compared to the whole mountain, it's small, but it was enough to keep Hua Cheng going. That small amount of faith, friendship, belief, love, connection is what drives TGCF in general, and what makes Xie Lian stick to what he believes is right rather than giving in to the deluge of pain and anger. The combined power of hualian and them being in love is what overpowers Jun Wu in book 5, and the Cave of 10,000 gods is a literal testament to that love.
Everything Hua Cheng did in the Kiln is basically the equivalent of giving the middle finger to Jun Wu in retrospect, even if he didn't know the full extent of it. Saving the humans by sacrificing his own eye, the effective opposite of what Jun Wu did when calming the Kiln by sacrificing the live humans. He jumped down from heaven, Jun Wu's corrupt domain. He made several statues for the 1 god that irks Jun Wu the most because he chose to not go out murdering people and Jun Wu wants the satisfaction of knowing anyone else - especially Xie Lian - would do the same as he did. He emerged a supreme that even Jun Wu had to admit was a force to be reckoned with. Everything about Hua Cheng's time in the Kiln is even more iconic in hindight; such a satisfactory win against Jun Wu by none other than Hua Cheng, it's perfect.

Hua Cheng is not the reward for Xie Lian's suffering. Hua Cheng suffered because Xie Lian suffered after all. Xie Lian was just lucky that someone....loved him that much.
There is no grand amazing world altering moral lesson at the end of TGCF, though some may say staying on the path of good and righteousness no matter what evil comes your way. However, in truth, Xie Lian stayed good because he couldn't bear to be evil. Hurting people has only ever hurt him. The way he so deeply regrets what he did in the past, it shames him because seeing his enemies suffer would have never brought him satisfaction. The same way Bai Wuxiang had to keep finding new enemies to fight because revenge doesn't make the pain go away and won't bring back what was lost. It's not a revelation that revenge is bad or a waste of time, but that it won't change how broken you are inside.
Xie Lian stayed true to himself but the reason he's so happy at the end of TGCF is not because of that. Hua Cheng would love him no matter what he did after all, and Hua Cheng knew Xie Lian so well, right down to the worst he was capable of, he knew Xie Lian would never hurt people, but it ended up boiling down to Hua Cheng choosing Xie Lian over and over again. Through the pain and suffering and sorrow. After everything, Xie Lian was just lucky.
It's painful, knowing that that's exactly how life works. Xie Lian was lucky that there was someone willing to fight for him and by his side for 800 years. Xie Lian was loved and adored the way everyone deserves to be loved and adored. A home was created for him and his pain did not feel meaningless at the end.
But what about Qi Rong? The neglected child who didn't get his happily ever after, except in headcanons? He didn't ask to have bad adults that never corrected him. He didn't ask to.crave attention so much that he'd rather be tortured than ignored.
What about He Xuan who lost everything for something that was never his fault? Getting revenge didn't get that back, it just made him lose more. Where is the home and happiness that He Xuan deserves once and for all?
What about Bai Wuxiang..... The version of Xie Lian that never got a Hua Cheng. That just kept suffering till he went mad.
What about Shi Qingxuan who had luck for majority of his life but will now live and die in insignificance, once again through no fault of his own. Or is he at fault for never asking his brother how he took care of the problem?
What about Ling Wen who loved and killed but never stopped loving. Who went to great lengths to revive her lover just to lose it all. What about Ling Wen who achieved so much but has lost one of her best friends and won't get the one she loves?
Unlucky. That's just it. Things didn't work out for them.
In the grand scheme of things, whether you're evil or good, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. Not all bad guys 'reap the consequences of their actions'. Not all good guys get a happy ending. Xie Lian was lucky, and I'm so happy for him. But every time I remember the others....it brings me to tears.
