I’m on a reading kick. Do you have any novels or short story collections you’d recommend?
!!!!!! omg yes i deffo do, ty for asking!
my major problem is that i give basically all my books away haha so im sure ive forgotten a lot of what i liked but anyhoooo!!!
short stories
daphne du maurier: ive read several of her short story collections & they were all great! don’t think you can go wrong whatever you pick
kelly link - pretty monsters
philip k dick: i read a 5 volume set of all (or most? idk) his short stories in chronological order & no regrets! don’t think you can go wrong whatever you pick
alice munro - runaway
nadine gordimer - the soft voice of the serpent
neil gaiman - smoke and mirrors (i find his short story collections to be a bit of a mixed bag cos im not into like sestinas or lovecraft ff, but there’s also always some gems!)
angela carter - the bloody chamber
roald dahl: ive read a few of his short story collections (for adults, though tbf i remember revolting rhymes being a lot of fun too) and they were great! assume you can’t go wrong whatever you pick
novels
dh lawrence - st mawr (i think this is technically a novella, you might only be able to find it in a collection...? it’s really fucking good though)
william morris - news from nowhere (or, an epoch of rest: being some chapters from a utopian romance...yes this is essentially socialist propaganda, and wot?)
aldous huxley - the island (60s huxley!!)
david mitchell - ghostwritten (first novel, structurally pretty similar to cloud atlas but i think this is probs both better AND a better intro, especially cos it’s kinda worth reading his bks in chronological order bc they’re loosely connected & that pays off later)
sarah waters - fingersmith (the novel the handmaiden is based on; set in victorian britain)
cs lewis - the screwtape letters (epistolary demon pov)
jane austen - lady susan (epistolary novel, extremely fun villain)
jasper fforde - the eyre affair (first in a series, super meta, welcome to literary crime!)
kurt vonnegut - cat’s cradle
jd salinger - franny and zooey (probably a novella? the sequel novellas & short stories are also excellent)
daniel defoe (?) - moll flanders (published 1722 but it feeeeels way more modern than, say, dickens)
lev grossman - the magicians (first in a series, sort of a realistic hogwartsy universe, with in-universe narnia-esque books but with clocks....im not explaining this well but it’s sooo good)
franz kafka - the castle (unfinished but still)
richard matheson - I am legend (will make you hate the film though, if you don’t already)
umberto eco - foucault's pendulum
robin sloane - mr penumbra's 24-hour bookstore
g willow wilson - alif the unseen
xiaolu guo - a concise chinese-english dictionary for lovers
milan kundera - the joke
diana wynne jones - howl's moving castle (an american made me read this, so i assume the joke lands with a non-british audience, haha)

22?? maybe??
time heist
circa nowhen
me being like u can have a little 12, as a treat, as a break from 10
i really love this episode idk why
is it all the familiar faces? is it my childhood love of ocean’s eleven? is it clara’s fucking suit? is it the doctor calling himself out in yet another scene so brilliantly delivered by capaldi? is it the line “not the last of its species, the last two” and its subtle parallel to two time lord disasters?
whatever it is i do genuinely love this episode
the runaway bride
circa 2007
i just really really really love donna
like yes she’s so mad and spends the first twenty minutes yelling at the doctor
oh god i missed that he called her unimportant too that kills ME
but then by the time we get to her finding out that her fiance was just using her? like the doctor’s realization of that moments before her? my heart is aching
her protectiveness immediately after of the doc?
and then he takes her to the creation of the earth???
and she stops him??? from taking vengeful time lord thing too far???
and then the end scene is so tender and Soft and i’m crying because i want them to be best emotionally supportive buds travelling the universe together forever
blink
circa 2007
i was trying so hard to figure out why this was 2007 and not 2008 like the rest of season 3 and finally i think it was bc at the end we have a year later and then she meets 10 and martha, but it hasn’t happened yet for them, but i still don’t know exactly how we got that time
anyway time is one big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff
both doc and companion lite episodes are interesting to me and i’ll have to keep an eye out moving out of rtd era bc i can’t really recall many?
anyway this whole ep is gold and baby mulligan sells it here
thanks for making us afraid of statues doctor who
turn left
circa alternate 2007 (and 2008 and 2009)
i put this one here bc the turning point is in 2007 and i was trying to mix up 10 as much as i could...but it does lean heavily on the events of seasons 3 and 4 so idkkkk
anyway i love donna noble just gotta repeat that
rose!!!! i forgot that every time rose comes back on the show she just glows up more and more
also it really strikes me how much she is playing the doctor’s role here (she even points it out herself) which makes me have a lot of 13 feels thx
‘i shan’t it’s christmas’
ICONIC
‘the most important woman in the whole of creation’
it’s so wild bc that line stuck with me when i first watched it in high school and it still makes me emotional
but you know what resonates now?
the ‘i’m tired. i’m so tired.’
she doesn’t want any of that responsibility and weight and doesn’t think she’s important and doesn’t want to keep fighting
and that’s me crying
i forgot how hard this episode goes with the alt timeline stuff like it is not even remotely in the vicinity of fucking around
and honestly the risky choices they make could potentially not land at all and could feel like they’re there for shock value but everyone onscreen (and behind it too i imagine) is pouring as much truth as they can into it and is committed to the actual horror that is this alternate timeline and it absolutely lands
god what an episode
nightmare in silver
circa nowhen
so that may have been a lie i think this one actually goes vaguely in the future
anyway here it helped breakup 10 eps so that’s good
i was like why an abandoned amusement park that’s cool but odd
and then i realized neil gaiman that’s why
anyway cybermen are more interesting when there’s more than just a painfully slow build to a reveal of a cybermen army ready to take over oh noes
and so HOLY SHIT SMITH
11 vs the cyber-planner is actually unbelievable???
his acting my god
it’s interesting bc there are a lot of similarities to the end of season 12 plot wise
but tonally this episode is so wildly different and serves a completely different purpose in the narrative and season that i have no motivation to draw parallels bc they’re both just doing interesting but separate things
smith and jones
circa 2008
who’s ready for some martha jones????
martha just deserves better. like. all the time.
i mean this is martha ‘you’re a doctor? yeah well i’ll call you that when you earn it’ jones
judoon platoon upon the moon
that’s all
haha dr. stoker i see what u did there
there are so many moments where you just have to be like what the fuck am i watching and the vampire lady drinking out of the doc’s neck with a straw is definitely up there
i level up every time martha calls herself a doctor or says that she’s going to be one
the lazarus experiment
circa 2008
we r rolling folks
how many doctor who episodes has gatiss been in my god????
black tie episode niiiiiiice
we’ve been name dropping harold saxon in literally every single episode present day this season and last my goodness
i can’t imagine what that’s about lol
maybe we’ll find out tomorrow

Uriel & Lucifer Meta post 2x05 - Weaponizer
So I was rewatching 2x05 - Weaponizer and I couldn’t help but start thinking a few things that just stuck with me...
First, let me remind you that Lucifer advised Uriel to lose the coat and he actually did it after his confrontation with Amenadiel... But let’s move on...
Tumblr media
Please listen to this song while I go a bit crazy. It’s part of the episode’s OST.
It’s the We Don't Eat by James Vincent McMorrow.
So in this episode, a strange humanisation of Lucifer begins... He refuses to believe there is no other solution as there is always another way...
First, let me tell you that I believe that Uriel on some level cared about his big brother’s opinion so he lost the coat but as the ending of the episode was coming to a close before the fight and then during it, I started to have this crazy meta forming in my head. My stomach bubbled and so I had to share it. Why? Because I believe that it might be of great consequence for the third season.
Now there will be a duality in this post. Lucifer’s wavering emotions between hate and love for Dad and what I call Uriel’s meta post.
Let’s visit the first scene at the church... I firmly believe that if you want to know the real Lucifer you should watch 2x05 and particularly the scene before the church fight up to the very end. Anyway, in the church, we are greeted by an obviously abandoned place where there are dozens of lightened candles. That’s not just for the decor of that scene...
Tumblr media
This the first heartbreaking scene of the episode although I doubt many realise why.
A) Lucifer took the time to light all these candles.
According to my fate lighting, the candles are supposed to show how we should ‘melt’ for the sake of the rest of the people around us while quietly lightening the path for them without showing off our generous actions no matter whether they are small or big.
In a sense, I believe this is a preparation of what Lucifer will be willing to sacrifice for Chloe and Mum. On the other hand, lightening a candle is an act of prayer itself which brings us to my second point.  B) Lucifer not only lightened the candles but he chooses a church.
In that moment he begs Dad to help. He tries to get back home and I believe that Lucifer was praying for more than just Uriel that night. Perhaps in a sense, Lucifer needed Dad to watch what was happening in his ‘house’ and within his family. It was the cry of a son screaming at his father to finally look and actually see. Brothers had just turned against each other and an innocent soul was at stake. Perhaps that was what broke Lucifer more. Dad’s absence while he let Uriel meet his end.
C) Until the very end, Lucifer believed there was another solution and indeed there was an unexpected one. Death.
Now moving on to Uriel. As I have said before I’ve never got why Uriel comes to L.A. to get Mum back to Hell or even extinguish her for good, fights Lucifer, threatens him with Chloe only at the end to tell him that the piece was on Earth thus starting a whole chain reaction which laid us to 2x18... With that in mind, I watched 2x05 under a completely different light.
Uriel’s quotes near the end were:
1) 'Cause for once in my life, I'd like to be surprised, but no.
Does that mean he was gifted with omniscience? Perhaps but we saw that Lucifer could follow a pattern but still Uriel could not figure out how the blow would come. In my perception, it meant that Uriel could see the colour green but he didn’t know if it was a leaf or a whole tree.
2) In my version, you refuse to give Mom up and your human friend dies.
But didn’t that happen? Didn’t Chloe reach death in 2x13? So perhaps Uriel was right after all but that’s not all...
3) L: Maybe you're not as good at this as you thought.     U: Maybe I'm building up to a big finale.
Now Uriel’s reply here made sense for me. In Hell, we saw that Mum remembered Uriel as the son who was always attached to her. He said ‘Don’t leave me not again’ indeed Mum remembers him as the boy he once was which makes me believe that perhaps Uriel loved her as well so he knew of the big finale in 2x18, something that is supported by the next lines.
4) L: No Heaven, no Hell, just just gone.     U: Finally, a moment of clarity between us.
Call me an overthinker but what if Uriel was giving Lucifer a hint of what he could do and that is why he told him before dying about the piece? Or perhaps the piece part belongs to the better understanding of the patters. Still, Mum did end up in a place which was not Heaven nor Hell so Uriel was right and by bringing the blade and notifying Lucifer of the piece, Uriel did help sent Mum to her own dimension.
5) A sequence will begin, and two days from now your cute little human will finally die.
Here we recognise that Uriel could control a sequence further ahead in time so what if that sequence lasted months or even years? Aka Chloe’s poisoning because if she wasn’t with Lucifer that night in 2x10, he would have had sex with Gina and Chloe might never have had the case of the smuggling poison which led them to the professor at some point... She did almost die and a new pattern began which as Uriel explains:
6) Patterns are tricky like that. Takes time to get a real sense of them.
I’m not sure whether Uriel was talking about the fight (doubtful in my speculation belief), or how at the last moments he realised that he had to die in order for a new pattern to start its sequence in which, he was the key that had to be pressed in order for everything to literally unravel as we saw in 2x18. Or three what if Uriel was telling to Lucifer that you Lucifer will need time to see the pattern, make a real sense of it and not feel threatened by it...?
Chloe’s love & miracle status, Mum, his wings, in my opinion, might have been part of a pattern which started once Uriel died... If Lucifer never had the sword he never would have perhaps gone to Vegas after Chloe was poisoned, Linda would have never learned the truth and would not have helped for Chloe to be saved... So many things would have gone differently if Uriel had not died and so the pattern is still in motion but Lucifer needs to actually make sense of it...
Finally, at the end of the episode, Chloe reads the book Coraline by Neil Gaiman and although that part is important from the book I would like for this post to rethink the lines...
As the first stars (Morningstar) came out, "Coraline finally allowed herself to drift into sleep (Chloe?). "While the gentle upstairs (Heaven/Dad?) music of the mouse circus "spilled out onto the warm evening air, telling the world that the summer was almost done (see the last 2 songs in 2x18 where a storm is coming and that the world is unravelling also the spoiler of Sinnerman as the darkest force Lucifer has faced so far).
I might be overthinking things but they make sense for me... If you have made it to the very end thank you, as you know that I tend to have this crazy scattered thoughts which are bubbling violently to get out once they are formed sometimes.
Last note... Just notice the lyrics of the song I gave you earlier... The one it is heard as Lucifer gets to the church to meet Uriel...
Two thousand years, I've been in that water Two thousand years, sunk like a stone Desperately reaching for nets That the fishermen have thrown Trying to find, a little bit of hope
okay but I like the beginning of the song a lot more...
If this is redemption, why do I bother at all There's nothing to mention, and nothing has changed Still I'd rather be working at something, than praying for the rain So I wander on, till someone else is saved Do search for the rest of the lyrics... They are beautiful.

"Sometimes, God; Breaks our spirit to save our soul. Breaks our heart to make us whole. Allows pain so we can be stronger. Sends failure so we can be humble. Allows illness so we can take better care of ourselves. Takes everything away from us so we can learn the value of everything he gave us...”
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

48. what is the worst way to die? Old. Frail. Lonely.
49. if you could be entirely invisible for a day, what would you do? Knowing me, I would do bad things. So, I shall not continue saying. Hahaha!
50. What are you planning on doing with your life? I honestly don’t know. Anywhere the wind blows, I guess.
51. Favorite Disney movie? Has to be Zootopia, Lilo and Stitch. Oh, and Mulan.
52. Do you believe in aliens? Maybe.
53. Are u an unstoppable force or an immovable object? Definitely an unstoppable force. I think it was in 2014, my Mum got worried with how much of a workaholic I got for ONE event. I left the house at 7 am and get home by around midnight or at 1 am.
54. If you were in front of a nondescript door that’s only property was to surprise you when you open it, would you open it? (remember, a “surprise” can be good or bad) Maybe but with caution. :P
55. (Witter’s addition) What kind of house would you get if you had the funds to get literally anything you could ever dream of? I’ve always loved Victorian houses. Oh! And English cottages. I don’t know. It could be just me, you know.
56. (Jajersz’s) Do you have any regrets? (My answer: Yes. The scar on my arm. But all those things I’ve done in the past, it taught me something. It taught me to be stronger than I was then.)
