1. Best book you have read in 2021 so far?

I have finished the Hornblower-Series this year and I absolutely loved them - but they are a series of books. With regards to a single book I would chose „Briefe bewegen die Welt“ (Letters move the World) by Hellmuth Karasek. The book is a selection of field post from soldiers throughout the ages. The oldest letters were written during the Thirty Years‘ War and it always amazes me how timeless notions of love, hope and despair are.

2. Best sequel you have read in 2021 so far?

Purpurrot - Tödliche Passion (Crimson - Deadly Passion) by Tom Wolf. It is the second book in a series of crime novels that are set in Fredrick the Greats Prussia. These books are well written and researched and the main character is just too hilarious.

3. A new release you want to check out?

Ferdinand von Schirach, a German author and lawyer has published a few books and pamphlets as of last that I have not read yet but I am normally not a person that is on the look-out.

4. Most anticipated book release of the second half of the year?

Not a classical „release“ but my university sells some of their books once or twice a year and everybody who studies knows how expensive textbooks can be. These sells were cancelled due to Covid but there are chances that my university opens up again soon - so, fingers crossed.

5. Biggest disappointment?

Honestly, there were no real disappointments! I had a very lucky and happy reading year thus far :-)

6. Biggest Surprise?

Conclave by Robert Harris by a wide margin. I knew that there had to be a plot twist somewhere in the book - but I could have never expected that turn of events …

7. Favourite new author (either new to your or debut)?

I have borrowed and read Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert some time ago and really liked it (contrary to my expectation). A month ago I finally bought a copy of the book and re-read it … I am complete taken with Flaubert right now.

8. Favourite New fictional crush?

Do I have a fictional crush? I am not quite sure if I have one but the most likely candidate for that would be William Bush from the Hornblower-Series. The men deserves all the happiness in the world and yet he was treated so harshly by C. S. Forester.

9. Newest favourite Character?

I can not decide between the Bishop Charles-François -Bienvenu Myriel from Les Misérables by Victor Hugo or Sheev Palpatine from the Star Wars saga.

10. A book that makes you cry?

I think there never was a book that made me cry … I have a heart made out of stone XD

11. A book that made you happy?

The stage play The Madness of George III by Alan Bennett never fails to cheer me up. The movie adaptation was so good but the original play is still ten times better!

12. Most beautiful book you have bought or received this year?

I have gifted myself a number of slipcases that were up for sale and they are all just so beautiful. I really can not decide which one of these collections I like best!

 13. What book do you need to read by the end of the year?

I have to read a few textbooks by the end of the year and I am actually looking forward to that. Furthermore, I have (or want) to read Nelson’s Surgeon by Laurence Brockliss,

John Cardwell and Michael Moss as well as Commander by Stephen Taylor. My aim is to learn as much as possible about the structure of the medical service in the British navy in the 18th and early 19th century.

This is Hellmuth, a character concept (I hope that is the correct term) created by the wonderful @thusfeathered !!! They took the German pilot from 1917 and developed him into a wonderful, tired dad. (Please not that Hellmuth exists in an au where he does not stab Blake and his legs are not burned. For info on him, please check out Feathers’ blog).  In any case, I fell in love with their concept and decided to draw their Hellmuth. This is meant to be a “photograph” of a young Hellmuth, before the war really took its toll on him. It’s not as well as I’d like it, (and I can’t draw/shade fur to save my life) but I hope you all enjoy!

John Chin Wins ‘Chipping All-In’ Charity Poker Tournament

Tournament raises more than $150,000 to assist MGM Resorts employees and their families economically impacted by coronavirus

The “Chipping All-In” charity poker tournament saw some of the biggest names in golf, poker elites and a basketball star hit the virtual felt with John Chin, a current Korn Ferry Tour player, claiming the win. Major champion golfers including Jimmy Walker, Michelle Wie and John Daly as well as Las Vegas Aces Head Coach Bill Laimbeer competed in the Texas Hold’em online tournament on Thursday, April 16 and helped raise more than $150,000 for the MGM Resorts Foundation’s Employee Emergency Grant Fund. The Fund provides the hospitality company’s employees and their immediate families with short-term relief in making payments or to meet obligations during unexpected hardships and emergencies. The Fund is designed to assist those impacted by the coronavirus, including part-time employees, on-call employees and those facing layoff or furlough.

The field of 58 was narrowed down to a final table featuring Pat Perez, Danielle Kang, Aaron Wise, Chin, Graham DeLaet, Taylor Montgomery, John Oda and poker personality Maria Ho. Eventually, Chin defeated local Las Vegas and UNLV alum Montgomery in the decisive showdown.

“I had a great time playing, all to help out an amazing cause. I caught a lot of cards during the tournament and the chips went my way,” said Chin.

The biggest upset of the day came when golfer Keith Mitchell eliminated popular poker pro Phil Hellmuth 90 minutes into the tournament. Mitchell’s set of 6s surprised the poker legend, who went all-in with Ace-King and finished with a pair of kings.

Major donations during the tournament were made by Coca-Cola, Michelob Ultra, Shriners Hospitals for Children, among others.

Jyoti Chopra, Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity & Sustainability Officer for MGM Resorts International, said, “We thank all of our partners for producing a dynamic and engaging event and especially all the players for taking time out of their day to support our colleagues during the COVID-19 crisis. Chipping All-In was a great success raising needed proceeds, and hopefully generated a few hours of fun and entertainment to fans around the world.”

Lance Evans, Senior Vice President of Sports and Sponsorships for MGM Resorts, said, “It was special to see an amazing coalition of our partners – from big businesses to the sports community – rally together to create this event in a short period of time. We are very appreciative to have such great support across the board.”

Poker Pro Phil Hellmuth Attempts To Sell Vegas House on Twitter, Gets Roasted

Never content with slow-playing his hand, poker legend Phil Hellmuth put his home in Las Vegas up for sale.

However, the 15-time World Series of Poker winner attempted to cash out in an unorthodox manner. Hellmuth posted a link to the property on Twitter, asking his 283,000-plus followers if they wanted dibs on it.

What followed was brutal.

Here’s his original tweet, previewing the home with a $430,000 price tag and the hashtag #POSITIVITY.

Railbirds got a glimpse at the hand Hellmuth was playing and raised the stakes with a series of replies.

First, his followers criticized the house itself. Next, they wondered why the home was priced higher than online estimates. Finally, an intrepid investigator alleged the home might be in foreclosure.

Karina Jett, who also comes from the poker world, is Hellmuth’s friend and the agent representing the home. She says she had no idea he was planning the Twitter announcement and tagging her in the process, but she wasn’t surprised.

“That’s very much his personality,” says Jett, who wasn’t prepared to deal with the trolls.

To set the record straight, the home isn’t in foreclosure. She explains there’s an ongoing HOA dispute over the placement of pool equipment, which caused the home to be labeled incorrectly.

The list price is also fair, says Jett, who plans to challenge online estimates of the home’s value, which don’t take recent sales in the neighborhood into account. The home was on the market for a bit last fall with an asking price of $375,000.

“It’s funny because everyone is always so anti-bullying, but, boy, they go on Twitter and it’s a different story,” Jett says. “I’ve never had to deal with cybertrolls before. I guess people just like to troll celebrities.”

The house, built in 1974, is a rare find near the Strip in a historic part of Vegas, she says. It has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and over 1,600 square feet of living space.

The home is part of the Las Vegas Country Club community, which has a reported initiation fee of $2,500.

Team #HighVariance has a collection of photos we call "Blurry Selfies with #Poker Pros", and this special one is with none other than @philhellmuthpositivity. Yeah, people have lots of opinions on him; instead, I have an experience to share. Phil is sitting a #poker table very near me at @ariapokerroom.
