honestly i ship the lavender winter polycule (hunter/willow/amity/luz) like BURNING so this all slots delightfully into it. i think it's totally reasonable that the kiddos might end up negotiating more complex and/or flexible entanglements with each other as they get older, that doesn't have to mean that they end their current relationships. like maybe it's just because i'm polyamorous but this has happened with So Many Groups Of Friends of mine.

gwen cooper 001: RELATIONSHIPS, INFIDELITY, AND MONOGAMY VS. POLYAMORY

TL;DR: GWEN COOPER IS POLYAMOROUS. rhys williams is and forever will be her primary partner. all ships with gwen cooper on this blog will follow this. her exploration and discovery of her polyamorous inclination was not the most honest or morally upright, but this does not discount that she is not monogamous.

GWEN COOPER has a complicated relationship with . . . well, relationships. for the entirety of torchwood, she is clearly in a “committed” relationship rhys williams. she has been, as far as we know, since college, though it took her some time to be attracted to him in the same manner that he was attracted to her.

THIS DOES NOT, however, stop gwen from stepping outside of the bounds of traditional monogamy on multiple occasions. we first see her respond to the sex alien’s advances in day one, when the alien was inhabiting carys fletcher. she continued to attempt to have sex with her once carys pushed her away upon realizing she was woman. this can be passed off as the influence from the pheremones the alien gave off, however.

ONLY A SHORT WHILE LATER, during cyberwoman, gwen began her affair with owen harper with an adrenaline-fueled kiss when they were both certain they were about to die ( initiated by owen, but fully accepted and returned by gwen ). after that, she began to sleep with him regularly, often spending nights in his flat when rhys thought she was at work.

A VARIETY OF FACTORS play into this -- disregarding carys, gwen had an emotional connection to owen in both their lifestyles and experiences, as well as the fact that she could not reach out to rhys at that point in time to share the changes in her life due to torchwood. in addition, it is confirmed multiple times ( countrycide, out of time ) that her sex life with rhys is subpar ( though there is proof this has taken a turn by day three ), and that her sex life with owen is far from the boring routine she has fallen into with her boyfriend ( countrycide, greeks bearing gifts ). this tryst continued throughout the first season until captain jack harkness, when they called it off when gwen had a fit of guilt. she later confessed the affair to rhys after dosing him with retcon -- not to reconcile, but to assuage her own guilty conscience that he would forgive her before forcing him to forget. he fell asleep due to the effects of the drug before she got her answer.

GWEN NEVER TOLD RHYS about carys or owen, and as seen in the james moran short story stakes on a plane, she’s not above using her sexuality to get what she wants/needs.

AFTER HER MARRIAGE, we see little to no references of gwen pursuing anything more than a passing interest/appreciation of something else. while i, personally, do not hold to the canon portrayal of jack and gwen as having a romantic interest in each other up to the day of her wedding, we know because of this that she is capable of harboring deep romantic feelings for people up until her actual wedding. however, she is not above feeling intense attraction to even strangers, even going so far as to claim them when jack comments on them ( virus ).

GWEN IS STILL not a fully monogamous person -- after her marriage to rhys, there is little to no chance of her pursuing any sort of relationship with anyone who is not part of torchwood ( in terms of canon -- plotted roleplay relationships are another story ). she has a deep connection to them beyond what anyone else could have. while she’d gladly partake in sexual adventures with any one of the team, it would be kept secret from rhys.

THOUGH GWEN IS OPEN to multiple sexual partners, she is fiercely defensive of rhys, preferring to keep herself as is only sexual partner. whether jealousy or protectiveness fuels this, the idea of including him in any adventures outside their relationship is uncomfortable and upsetting to her.

GWEN IS NOT MONOGAMOUS. she has, however, been raised with the traditional and conservative ideals of one partner and marriage, and believes herself to be. were rhys comfortable with the idea of her having other partners at any point in time ( extremely doubtful in canon -- again, different on this blog ), she would happily indulge in a polyamorous lifestyle, with multiple committed and casual relationships, with rhys as her primary partner. as proven in canon, rhys is the only person she loves above all else, though she is capable of love for others ( outbreak ).

THIS BEING SAID: ALL SHIPS WILL BE SIMULTANEOUS WITH HER RELATIONSHIP WITH RHYS WILLIAMS. pre-marriage, this is likely either infidelity, or in the beginnings of an exploration of polyamory with rhys’ knowledge and consent ( reluctant at first, but freely given ). post-marriage, this is with rhys william’s full consent and knowledge, with the idea that rhys is and forever will be her primary partner.
