Pentire Street Productions present William Shakespeare’s perennial tale of Machiavellianism – RICHARD III.
In this reimagination, The Tragedy of King Richard the Third has been set in London’s East End, 1966, with the title role being split into two characters.
Performing at the Barons Court Theatre from the 31st October to 19th November 2017 (excluding Monday 6th & 13th November).
After months of gang violence, an uneasy and tenuous peace returns to the East End. With Edward on his deathbed, who will claim the inheritance of The Firm? His younger twin brothers may have their eyes set on leadership, but they are not alone: they will have to do everything they can to secure their rule against the threat of Edward’s daughter. Meanwhile, more gangs assemble south of the Thames in preparation for a bloody takeover to oust the Krays from their throne, one which will shake the criminal underworld of London to its core.
The eponymous role of Richard III has been reinvented as two characters in this production to echo the most infamous gang leaders in 1960s London.
Shakespeare’s perennial tale of Machiavellianism has been transformed by Pentire Street Productions to follow an indomitable rise to power in the East End. The production company was formed by a group of students to not only undertake projects in film and theatre, but to also build educational outreach programs to bridge the gap between the amateur and professional industries.
Pentire Street Productions Previous work (film): ‘Best To Say Nothing’ (2016), ‘In My Mind’ (2017) Previous work (theatre): ‘Rubber’ – Edinburgh Fringe 2016. An immersive show set and performed in a car that deals with an abusive relationship and sex trafficking. As an intimate piece, two audience members are driven around in a fly-on-the-wall experience. 2 x 5*, 2 x 4* – ‘Chilling and absolutely essential to partake in’, ‘Rubber will be your Fringe highlight’. We will be performing ‘Rubber’ again in London in early 2018.
Previous work (education): Through 2016-2017 we set up a Schools’ Film Festival, in association with the University College London Volunteering Services Unit, where we offered inner London secondary schools the chance to make a short film following from a series of workshops from aspiring students, who themselves had received workshops from industry professionals. http://ift.tt/2xjzsiN
Cast: Richard III – Duncan Mitchell (Guildford School of Acting), Samuel Parkinson (Drama Centre London) Queen Elizabeth – Beatrice Lawrence (Central School of Speech and Drama) Duchess of York – Debbie Bird (ALRA) Clarence/Buckingham – Harry Omosele Princess/Lady Anne/Secretary – Bibi Lucille Salmons Rivers/Catesby – Brian Adam Merry Hastings/King Edward/Murderer/Mayor/Tyrell – Cyril Blake

Creative Learning
Hey, everyone! It's Luther here, work experience student from QUAD.
Today I’d like to talk about creative learning, what it is, my thoughts on it and I’ve also had a chat with QUAD’s Education Curator, Sandra.
So what is Creative Learning? Well, creative learning is where you use your ideas and imagination to enhance the education experience. At QUAD it’s a big part of what they do within the community.
As I said earlier I was able to sit down with QUAD’s Education Curator, Sanda. There are many facets to Sandra’s job. She’s in charge of both the Young Peoples Program and the Formal Education side of QUAD.
The young people's program consists of Kids QUAD (ages 7-11), Digi Squad (ages 12-16), Young Creatives (ages 14-19) and QUAD Future (ages 14-25).
The Format booklets get created every two years, they're an exhibition resource for the Format International Photography Festival. There is one for key stages 1 and 2 and one for key stage 3 plus. Sandra also creates shorter resource booklets for every exhibition at QUAD.
With the Formal Education Sandra works with Schools (both High School and Primary School), Universities and Sixth-Form Colleges. She encourages these organizations to bring their students into QUAD, she liaises with them and organizes the dates, the event or class that the students will be doing and where.
Sandra got into the job by starting with a photography degree, then working in a photography archive which lead her to a government admin job and finally to QUAD, exactly five years ago from when this was posted.
The following are my ideas to use in DigisQUAD in the future.
Double Exposure Lesson. - Have everyone take a Portrait and Landscape then take the images in Photoshop and teach them how to make an artificial double exposure shot.
Pick your favorite fictional character, celebrity, content creator or athlete and get a picture (preferably head shot), then create a Justin Malleresc piece of art. You can find some more of his work here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These were my thoughts on QUAD’s website.
To find the Quad website it took an easy google of “QUAD”, I was presented with reviews of QUAD and directly underneath the showtimes section produced by Google there was a link to derbyquad.co.uk, the main page is colourful and has lots of information. Upon hovering over the “Whats on” tab you are presented with multiple options, it's easy to find what you’re looking for and the website has a good flow. The four tabs I was interested in were Exhibitions, Events, Courses, and Education. It’s simple to go to the program pages and learn about each program and what it has to offer.
What Looks Interesting?
“The Machine Made: Art, Robots, and AI” looks interesting and is something I was looking at going to before I came to do work experience.
Under the “Events” tab the “Artificial Intelligence Discussion” struck as something interesting and with depth, which would enhance the philosophical discussion.
What are some things other Art Societies do that we could try?
At the QUAD I would like to partake in a debating society, I would also like to learn more about different and new ways to display art in new mediums. i.e. AR, VR.
Tumblr media
At the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland, I partook in an “Immersive Installation”, in which you use Virtual Reality technology to watch a short collection of films by different collaborative artists in 360. The installation lasted 55 minutes and was £20
At Nottingham Contemporary they do “Spot Talks” where you can “Gain a new insight into the exhibitions”. The main attraction is that you can ask the Gallery Assistants questions about the work, their meaning and origin. They are informal and last from 20-30 minutes. It’s free but looks like a good way to bring people in and have them engage with events.
At Nottingham Contemporary they do a lot of school trip openings for free, these tend to be on the last days of the gallery, this is converse to the activities they do with young people, for instance, “Creative Connections: Nottingham” is a Photography course where the participants go out and take photos in Nottingham. This Ran from the 19th of July to the 31st.
With the school based activities, you can improve your communication skills and articulation skills in terms of being able to explain, elaborate and justify your opinion on a piece of Art. With the latter, it’s all about learning a skill, in this case, Photography, and, of course, putting it into practice.
Thanks for reading!
