The Talla/Alara conundrum: a followup
Tumblr media
(Image cropped from the Official Orville Instagram - and only cropped to remove some time-specific wording at the bottom)
A few weeks back I posted an item about similarities I spotted between Halston Sage’s Alara Kitan and Jessica Szohr’s Talla Keyali, the actor/character who succeeded her midway through Season 2 of The Orville. It’s been getting some reblogs lately, so I thought I’d do a quick followup. (BTW the earlier post is positive in tone - I love both characters and Jessica is a terrific addition to the show. No complaints at all.)
My comments in a nutshell were that it was taking a little while for Talla to get her own voice in the show, and the episode “Deflectors” felt like it had been written for Alara as it touched on many aspects of Alara’s character arc (and I think it would have set things up nicely for Alara’s departure in “Home” too). But I loved the episode, and loved Talla in it.
We’ve had a few episodes since then and Seth MacFarlane and his writers, and certainly Jessica herself, have done a terrific job of giving Talla her unique voice, and I think last night’s episode, “Blood of Patriots”, coupled with the amazing “Identity” two-parter, really drove this home. I honestly don’t want to spoil anything about “Blood of Patriots”, but Talla was amazing in the episode and any “concerns” (and that word frankly sounds like I’m overselling things; I barely call them concerns - “Deflectors” was the best Orville episode ever until “Identity” came along a week later) that I had about Alara’s successor are pretty much gone.
That said, I am still very much looking forward to Alara and Talla meeting on screen. I’m sure it’s going to happen eventually (there’s no way Seth will be able to resist) and I think it will be amazing.
