Arts District - Businesses
Click on the name of each establishment to be taken to their respective post complete with longer descriptions, graphics, and fics with their location featured in them. Search the tag “#vb arts district” to find businesses, housings, and inspiration for anything relating to the Arts District.
Elements of Art
The premiere art gallery in the city. A variety of works are displayed in showcases weeks after weeks. Many aspiring artists only hope to one day have their works displayed inside these walls.
Fresco
A collective group of businesses are located in what the townies called “Fresco”. Much like Uptown’s “Plaza,” Fresco is a series of shops that open up to a common, open air courtyard. The main difference, though, it that Fresco is much more affordable and more laid-back. Art supply stores, a bakery, a bar, and a number of other business can be found here, most of which are open twenty-four hours of the day, seven days a week. Perfect for the artists who get inspired at 3 in the morning. Several shops offer discounts to college students (%15 off purchases of $20 or more) and art professors (25% off purchases of $30 or more).
Gouache
Gouache is a sandwich shop that has been a district favorite for that past seven years. The owners of Gouache name their sandwiches after the famous celebrities or “famous faces” of Verona Bay and only serve those sandwiches on the menu. Many people, especially those living in the Arts District, often aspire to have Gouache name a sandwich after them. Once you have your own sandwich at Gouache, you can officially say you’ve made it.
Raku
Raku is not your typical art club. No, it really takes to heart what the Arts District is all about. They have paint drums you can play, boards full of paint-filled balloons to pop, and an entire wall that is repainted blank every night so the party-goers can graffiti it. Expect to be covered in black-light-reactive paint by the end of the night. Think Blue Man Group on crack.
Scoops
Scoops is an old fashion ice cream shop that both manufactures and distributes its own line of premium ice cream, frozen yogurt, and other frozen novelty items. Family-owned. Originated back in 1937.
Splatter!
It’s a pottery and paint studio. Classes are held during the day that teach techniques at any range from beginner to expert. There are also rooms in the back that you can pay to use as an art studio. You may use their machinery, but you must bring your own art supplies!
The Digital Bean
The Digital Bean is a cyber cafe and bookstore rolled into one. Come here for one of the best spiced chai Lattes in the Bay, not even Starbucks can compare. Settle in front of one of their mac computers or venture up the wooden staircase to the bookstore.
Ariel’s Treasure Trove
This is probably the only artsy thrift and pawn shop you’ll find in Verona Bay. You probably won’t find pricey jewelry, televisions, or collector’s edition baseball cards, but if you’re looking for something colorful, unusual, or artistically old fashion, then speak to the owners.
34th Street Ink
Everyone’s into self-expression, so why not express yourself with body art? 34th Street Ink Shop is where you’d get your body art down, whether it’d be tattoos or piercings. Oh, and by the way, don’t let the name fool you; it’s not on 34th street.
Sweet Revenge Bakery
Who doesn’t love sweets? This bakery has been around for about eight years, but it is definitely one of the most popular tourist stops, ever since the owner competed on one of Food Networks cake decorating competition shows. Though he places second in the final round, it did get him a lot of TV exposure and the opportunity to bake a huge display for San Diego Comic Con a year after the shop opened, boosting his clientele. If you’re ever in the Waterfront or Uptown districts, be on the lookout for one of their cupcake trucks—they have two—for yummy treats on-the-go!
Camp Barks-A-Lot
The perfect place to leave your little puppy while you’re away! This doggy daycare/boarding company has only been open a few years, but is a favorite for many Verona Bay residents. They will not only house, feed, and play with your dog all day long, but they will also groom him or her, too, if you’d like.
The ARC (Arts & Recreation Center)
A state-of-the-art facility that’s perfect for any person of any age. Art classes, book clubs, tutoring services, dance classes, after school programs, gyms, sports courts, and a pool, the ARC has it all. Open Monday-Sunday 5am to 10 pm.
Hero’s Hideout Comic Shop
“We’ve Got Issues!” This local comic store has only been around for three years, but is definitely the perfect haven for any comic lover. They’ve got tons of comics, gear, collectibles, and more! Don’t see the comic you want on the shelf? No worries! Just fill out the form at the front counter and you’ll hear back within 10-15 business days about your inquiry. They’re getting ready to test out a subscription box—because those are all the rage right now—so be sure to sign up on their website or in store as soon as possible!
