ok I just received the Autobiography of Mr. Spock and holy fucking shit
the section about kirk fully made me throw the book down, walk away, and lay on the floor for about 5 minutes
we have obviously "I have tried on many occasions to write about Jim Kirk. This seems to me an increasingly impossible task. Jim Kirk lies at the very heart of this account; he is present on every page, the ink in which these words have been written...How do you write about someone you have so deeply loved?" Which is just the most romantic and beautiful thing I have read in my life.
we also have "He changed the rules so that people would live. Jim was very bad with rules. Sometimes that could be irritating. More often than not, it was exhilarating."
the one that made me bawl "That letter took a while to reach me, and I often think of it, in transit, containing the news that Jim was both alive and dead. That was the only time that I regretted my mission to Romulus, and I did regret it, bitterly. If only I had been present, somehow. Perhaps I might have saved his life, again (although he told me, once, that he would die alone). Was that not what we did, after all-save each other's life, again and and again? At the very least, I might have seen him, one last time. I have not been to see his grave. I believe I can permit myself one illusion in life." which just...holy FUCK
(you will see him again spock I swear 😭)
and the one that hit me like a brick, referring to the first time he met Jim, "I recall that Jim's face like up, with a smile like the sun. 'I think,' he said, 'that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.' He was not wrong."
these motherfuckers i need to be sedated like yesterday

Make It So Friday

I really liked this book, but, it was also one of the hardest to get into of the Autobiographies. I think part of that is because Spock is one of the most dense story wise characters there is in the Star Trek universe, he has had even more time spent on him than Kirk. Honestly, in every generation there seems to be a Spock, and, for the most part, while they’re a lot a like, the also each add to the layered onion that is the character.
So, because there are so many Spocks, and such a rich and layered story, this book seemed to be so so much more interwoven with the canon from the screen (I mean, if I'm recalling correctly, they even used canon from the Animated Series, which was awesome).
It tells the story of Mr. Spock from his birth through right before the 2009ish reboot movie. And, even more interestingly, it’s not just him writing his autobiography, but, he’s also sort of writing it to Jean-Luc Picard (see, layers upon layers). As usual, the author blended the canon with the non-canon, and, McCormack also got the voice of Spock almost perfect. It was such a fun read.
Twiddles thumbs and waits impatiently for The Autobiography of Benjamin Sisko

i just. imagine outliving every single person you've ever loved. every. single. person. not only that, but because of the simple fact that you're in the goddamn space navy, a lot of these people die pretty tragically. your father, overcome with a disease that strips him of his dignity as the ambassador to a race that relies on calculated pride. your mother, always so warm and caring, falling to memory loss until she doesn't recognise you, her favourite person in all the galaxy. your first captain, your first friend, disfigured until he's near unrecognisable and it's your responsibility, yours, to get him to a place where he can die at least a little more happy than he otherwise would have. your two best friends, the only two people in your entire almost 200-year-long life that you trust completely, are only around for less than a quarter of said life because they're human and you're not (well, half) and you knew the whole time they would die way before you. and one of them, the one you call soulmate, brother, lover in your native language, disappears and dies far before his time, without any time for you to prepare for it. and the other? you rely on him for so long and then, without warning because he was healthy until the day he died because he's a doctor goddammit, he's gone.
and now what? what else do you have? so you dedicate the rest of your days to saving a planet destined to die. all of your hard work, and still, romulus falls to political destruction anyway. and in your attempts to save it, you go to the one place the universe thinks you need to be, but it hurts, it hurts so damn much because they're all back, and they're all so young, and things aren't quite right, and even though part of you is happy to help them along the same wonderful path you experienced, part of you also grieves for the repetition of the losses you have faced. you don't want your younger counterpart to have to endure it, but he does because that's just the will of the universe, and you are powerless to stop it.
imagine that.

Emma & Mr. Knightley from 'EMMA' || Spock & Jim Kirk from 'STAR TREK' || Parallels
This was inspired by the similarity I noticed between the last two quotes.
S1 E16: The Galileo Seven, Star Trek: The Original Series (1966) // EMMA, dir. Autumn de Wilde (2020) // S3 E24: Turnabout Intruder, Star Trek: The Original Series (1966) // Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, dir. Nicholas Meyer (1982) //Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, dir. Just realized I've never done this (or I don't think I did in any case)
Favourite Star Trek Novels
Personal favs :
• A. C. Crispin, Yesterday’s Son and Time for Yesterday (best Spock characterization ever; Spock who is all there for his son with Zarabeth, but who is continuously thinking about Kirk and going home to him; time shenanigans)
• Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath, Price of the Phoenix and Fate of the Phoenix (obvs!)
• Jean Lorrah, Vulcan Academy Murders (for those who love their Amanda/Sarek with a side of Amanda whump)
• Barbara Hambly, Ishmael (which I should not like because I do not like Westerns at all)
• Andrew Robinson, A Stitch in Time (fantastic novel that is very Garak/Bashir. Very. Siddid el Fadil and Robinson shipped it and it shows)
• Jerri Taylor, Mosaic (one of the best ST novels, bar none; rich Janeway explorations and fascinating temporal mechanics)
Slashiest TOS novels :
• Everything Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath, Triangle, The Prometheus Design, and (slashiest by far) Price of the Phoenix and Fate of the Phoenix
• Della van Hise, Killing Time (obvs; the original slashier version is easily available as a pdf online)
• The Motion Picture novelization (obvs, the footnote)
• Theodore Sturgeon and James Gunn, The Joy Machine (obvs)
• Everything A.C. Crispin
• Everything Vonda McIntyre, especially The Entropy Effect and the TWOK and TSFSnovelizations
• Everything Jean Lorah (spirkitude on top of fantastic writing)
• Everything J.M. Dillard, especially Bloodthirst and Mindshadow
• Everything Diane Duane (@dianeduane is one of us)
• Diane Carey, especially Cadet Kirk (YA and adorable Kirk and Spock interaction/friction)
• Margaret Wander Bonnano, Strangers from the Sky
• Una McCormack, The Autobiography of Mr Spock (you want to cry about just how lonely Spock is for no longer having Kirk in his life? This) (also one of us)
• Howard Weinstein, The Covenant of the Crown (a fairly nondescript TOS novel that will slap you in the face with sudden and unexpected k/s-coloured paragraphs)
• D.C. Fontana, Vulcan's Glory (Spock can easily be read with spirk-coloured glasses; also it is very good writing)
Happy reading!
