Ajax release third kit inspired by Bob Marley and 'Three Little Birds'
Tumblr media
5:30 AM ETAjax are the latest club to release their 2021-22 third kit in a busy week that has seen a deluge of new auxiliary strips dropping all around Europe. However, rather than delving into the past or revamping a design of old, the Eredivisie club have taken the opportunity to pay homage to one of their key musical inspirations. The shirt is a tribute to the late, great reggae legend Bob Marley, whose classic anthem "Three Little Birds" can regularly be heard echoing around the terraces of the Johan Cruyff Arena on matchday.2 RelatedIt all began in fairly unlikely circumstances during the summer of 2008 when Ajax travelled to Wales to face Cardiff City in a preseason friendly at Ninian Park. The Dutch fans were asked to remain in the stands after the final whistle to help ease congestion outside, during which time they were entertained by the stadium DJ. Three Little Birds was one of the songs played. It was instantly embraced and is still sung to this very day.Indeed, Ajax have adopted the reggae anthem as an unofficial club song and will now take to the field with three little birds on their jerseys -- etched in the famous red, green and gold colours associated with Marley's Rastafarian religion.Rise up this mornin', smile with the rising sun.Introducing our new 21/22 third jersey, inspired by our collective love for @BobMarley and his Three Little Birds. pic.twitter.com/YiPUS7AR19— AFC Ajax (@AFCAjax) August 20, 2021As well as his music, Marley was also known to be a passionate lover of the game and his Wailers 5-a-side team even took on FC Nantes -- who were reigning Ligue 1 champions at the time -- in a casual kickaround in the early 1980s, before taking to the stage in the French city later that night."I am beyond touched that Ajax has taken Three Little Birds and made it their anthem," said Marley's daughter, Cedella. "Stories like this warm my heart and show how impactful songs like Three Little Birds can be. Soccer was everything to my father... and to use his words: 'football is freedom.'"Ajax's new third kit forms part of a larger Marley collection which also includes a tracksuit, sweater, t-shirt and a pair of limited edition Samba sneakers, complete with red, green and gold stripes, as well as the club crest on the tongue.
Tumblr media
This isn't the first time we've seen Marley's image gracing a football shirt either, with Irish club Bohemians launching their own limited edition jersey for the 2018-19 season. The shirt was intended as a tribute to the Jamaican legend, who staged his last ever open-air concert at Boh's Dalymount Park ground in Dublin in 1980.Introducing Bohemians' new away shirt! Tumblr media
The Sounders' psychedelic 2021-22 away shirt celebrates the life and career of the 1960s rock legend, whose band The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992."Seattle was and always will be Jimi's home. The Sounders are Seattle's own, as well," said Janie Hendrix, president & CEO of Experience Hendrix. "Collaborating with the Sounders to create a jersey is our way of playing for the home team. Jimi was all about honoring the place you come from. This venture allows us to give back to the community he loved. That's something I think would make Jimi proud."- 2021 MLS schedule: The games you cannot miss - ESPN+ viewer's guide: MLS, Bundesliga, Serie A, FA Cup and moreSounders star Nicolas Lodeiro helped launch the new Adidas uniform, which has been officially dubbed "The Jimi Hendrix Kit" by the club. The jersey conjures images of the electric guitar great in his pomp with a purple haze effect all over, trimmed with bright flashes of orange and yellow -- accents as bold as love.
Tumblr media
Hendrix's signature has also been added to the bottom-left corner of the jersey while the inner neck features a tape graphic of hand-written lyrics from the song "Straight Ahead," which was included on posthumous 1997 album "First Rays of the New Rising Sun."
Tumblr media
This is no castle made of sand either, with the Sounders' Jimi Hendrix kit also placing a strong emphasis on promoting and supporting local community causes. Proceeds from the first 30 days of sales will be donated to five non-profit organisations, all of which are geared toward advocating youth sport and/or art and music. What's more, the right sleeve of the shirt also features the salmon logo of the Puyallup Tribe, who still serve as first nation stewards of the land throughout the Puget Sound in Washington State and have recently signed a charitable partnership deal with the club.
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Dublin-based club Bohemians were at it again as Irish post-punk band Fontaines DC sponsored their new away kit. The kit, which features the band's name across the midriff, will help raise funds to support a homelessness charity with 15% of proceeds being donated to Focus Ireland. We're extremely proud to be a part of the new Bohs kit in conjunction with Focus Ireland as they are two organisations that we hold very close to our hearts. @bfcdublin @FocusIreland https://t.co/X8GITXdSGa pic.twitter.com/6GptJrKaTF— Fontaines D.C. "Having a Dublin football team having 'Refugees Welcome' be the biggest thing on their shirt, that's amazing."In the recent past, we've even seen huge clubs like Paris Saint-Germain buddying up with rock royalty to produce special one-off shirts.Indeed, the Parisians joined forces with the Rolling Stones to produce a whole range of merchandise, including replica shirts, apparel, skateboards and even crash helmets.OFFICIAL: PSG have launched their "unique collaboration" with the Rolling Stones. #PSGNoFilter pic.twitter.com/Dh9mySO5RP— Jonathan Johnson (@Jon_LeGossip) October 18, 2017 After scoring a number of hits in the early 1990s, Scottish pop band Wet Wet Wet decided to invest some of their earnings in their hometown club, Clydebank, by taking over as shirt sponsor.1⃣3⃣ 👕 Clydebank 💰 Wet Wet Wet"Wet Wet Wet arguably started the whole bands sponsoring football teams by pumping some of their pre-Love Is All Around royalties into their hometown team in 1993." pic.twitter.com/QLAKRyhHqh— FourFourTwo (@FourFourTwo) January 29, 2018 DJ and Brighton & Hove Albion fan Fatboy Slim had his record label Skint sponsor the shirts of his beloved hometown club for a period in the early 2000s.The 1999-00 Brighton & Hove Albion home shirt is a classic. There are great soccer goals, and then there is the sweet *ping* of perfection
Tumblr media
Plus Crystal Dunn mocks the divers of the world, and the beautiful megging of Leroy Sane in this week’s Tactically Naive.
Back from our break — a lovely time, thanks for asking — and straight into a pretty strong week. The good things were good, and the silly things were also good, and so football, which is always good, was particularly, pointedly good. Hooray.
The impromptu festival of PING
We don’t know exactly which footballer had the idea. Made the calls, sent the email round. Dropped it into the NO MANAGERS ALLOWED!!! group chat. But we’re grateful. This weekend’s European football was the usual blend of chaotic and predictable, engaging and tedious, except for some reason it was also a festival of trying score ridiculously beautiful goals.
And the gold medal went to a demonstration — perhaps the perfection — of one of football’s most pleasing occurrences. The perfect contact. The finding of the sweetest of the sweet spots. The ping.
Kicking a football has never actually made a ping sound. Even the most perfect contact comes out as a resonant thud. The ping, then, isn’t onomatopoeic in any real sense. Instead, it is a kind of aspirational metaphor: the sound that the sweetly caught ball should be making, when compared to everything else around it.
Very few finishes, even the sharpest, say ping. This, from Gonzalo Higuain who apparently plays for AC Milan now, is a lovely piece of strike-work: instinctive, precise, exactly the kind of thing he should get around to doing in an important game at some point. But it’s a touch too scruffy, a touch too poached. Ping, done right, starts with the explosive p but then rings out through the innnnnnnngggggg.... This one’s rustled into the net far too quickly.
Higuain's goal pic.twitter.com/e8G4xm0jPN
— #FreeLocatelli (@semo33) September 23, 2018
We’re getting closer with this effort from Cristhian Stuani against Barcelona, though Tactically Naive is going to contend that this goal sits at the level just before the ping: the thwack. The difference is in both set-up and contact. Where the ping is usually a true volley and always exceptionally precise, the thwack is a simple case of hasty redistribution. That ball needs to go in that direction as quickly as possible. Thwack. Sorted.
youtube
But it’s okay. The ping is real, and it’s here, and it’s your friend:
John McGinn scored THE goal of the day. No arguments. pic.twitter.com/95LlLOyvjX
— Soccer AM (@SoccerAM) September 22, 2018
What a thing this goal is. Impossibly perfect contact, impossibly beautiful arc, and then a little clip on the crossbar for extra style points. You can almost hear the ball singing with pleasure as it slides through the air, rubbing itself against the wineglass of the universe. “Piiiiiiiiinnnnnggggg!”
The true ping is precious, and scarce. In every other possible world, John McGinn has sent that ball dribbling out to the corner flag, or yammering into the crowd, or straight into the face of the nearest defender. Only here, for us, did he manage to produce this. It’s not often that we get to live in the shiniest timeline. But every ping is a little shiver of light in the darkness.
Obviously, Villa lost.

The Goldilocks’ Porridge Theory of Diving Indignation.
There are three ways to think about diving, and two of them will do you no good at all.
The first, the saltiest option, is Full Moral Righteousness.
Diving is a sin, and a stain, and a blight on the game. It is a sickness, it was almost certainly brought to the game by somebody suspiciously foreign, and it should be rejected by all right-thinking people. Bring in suspensions. No, bring in the cane. That’ll sort it.
While occasionally fortifying, this is incredibly difficult to maintain in the long run. For a start it’s incredibly tiring to be so angry with something that happens so often. Even the world’s most fervent anti-diving pundits, those of the Premier League a few years back, tended to award themselves a little rest whenever somebody English fell over.
Then there’s the awkward fact that occasionally footballers don’t get the fouls they deserve unless they fling themselves to the floor. Sometimes it isn’t the player, but the game.
The second option, the too-sweet one, is the blithe handwaving of any and all simulation. Again, it’s not terrible on occasion: it suggests that you, the Diving Ignorer, are a well-adjusted person with a healthy perspective on this sport, which is just a game, and so not worth getting all het up about. But ... well, too much sugar is very, very bad for you.
Fine! Great! A dive? That’s fine. That’s absolutely fine. They’ve scored the penalty. Life’s rich tapestry, eh? Win some, lose some. On we go. Sure we’ll get a decision soon. Hey ho.
At which point your friend leans over and asks if you’re okay, and you realize you’ve clenched your fist right through your glass and there’s blood dripping down your fingers and also you’re standing on the table and being asked to leave the pub.
The key, as with all things, is balance, along with a little healthy mockery, which is why Crystal Dunn must be given any chair she likes.
Give me more! #NCvPOR | #NWSL | #NWSLChampionship pic.twitter.com/d60HaYfSn2
— WoSo Comps (@WoSoComps) September 22, 2018
Hold diving in contempt, yes, but don’t let it destroy you. Let diving go, as you must, but don’t let it pass completely. Look diving in the eye, laugh, and then fling yourself on the floor in a heap. The simulation of the simulation exposes the ridiculousness of the simulation. Not too salty, not too sweet. Just right.
Zito’s nutmeg corner
Sane: "The experience that we have of our lives from within, the story we tell ourselves about ourselves in order to account for what we are doing, is fundamentally a lie – the truth lies outside, in what we do.” pic.twitter.com/u8n1Y904xt
— Zito (@_Zeets) September 24, 2018
Leroy Sane is an absolute bastard, isn’t he? Some players, when they’re running, really look like they’re working hard. Arms and legs whirring, head banging up and down. And then along comes Sane, who moves likes an ice dancer. It’s grotesquely unfair, in that it’s unfair just how grotesque he makes everybody else look.
Liverpool on 18 points. City and Chelsea both on 16. Whisper it, but we just might get an actual title race in the Premier League. Been a while.

Aston Villas Jack Grealish is PUNCHED by pitch invader
This is the thug who was arrested after assaulting Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish during the Second City derby at St Andrew’s.
The assailant has now been identified as father-of-one Paul Mitchell, who is thought to live in Birmingham.
A determined Grealish had the last laugh by picking himself up after the vile assault and scoring the match-winning goal in the second-half.
The incident occurred in the ninth minute of the game when Mr Mitchell wearing a flat cap ran onto the field from the Tilton End and punched Grealish in the head from behind.
The 23-year-old fell to the floor but thankfully did not appear to be badly hurt. A steward, helped by both sets of players, then restrained the man.
Shortly after the incident Grealish scored what would end up being the match-winning goal and jumped over the hoardings to celebrate.
A steward restraining him appears to kick the Aston Villa captain and is later led away by police.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has been assaulted by a man during the Birmingham derby
He struck the midfielder in the head with his right hand from behind, knocking Grealish over
Thankfully the 23-year-old did not appear to be badly hurt and the man was restrained
In the shocking incident the man sprinted onto the field in the ninth minute and struck Grealish with some force – to cheers from some supporters.
The intruder was quickly restrained by stewards as several other Villa players rushed in to confront him.
The Aston Villa bench were all on their feet to check on Grealish while Birmingham City players came over to apologise to the Villa captain.
Grealish later smashes home a goal in the second-half and leaps over the hoardings to celebrate with Villa fans.
But in doing so, he appears to be punched and kicked by a steward to get him back over the hoardings.
The end of the footage shows a steward being led away by a police officer.
After the game, the match-winner Grealish said: ‘I was just unaware of it at the time obviously I think we had a throw in in the corner, I was walking into position and I felt a whack around the side of the face.
‘Obviously there’s rivalry and stuff in football but I don’t think there’s any place for that really. But I just tried to get on with my job in the end and I think I did, scored the winner and we’ve come away with three points.’
A spokesman for Birmingham City Football Club said the pitch invader will be banned for life.
They said: ‘Birmingham City Football Club would like to apologise to Jack Grealish and Aston Villa Football Club for an incident in this afternoon’s derby match.
‘We deplore the behaviour of the individual who committed this act and rest assured he will be banned from St. Andrew’s for life. The Club will also support any further punishment this individual may face in the eyes of the law.
‘The Club will be working with the relevant authorities to investigate all the circumstances and we will be reviewing our stadium safety procedures.
‘What happened has no place in football or society. Jack is a Birmingham lad and regardless of club allegiance should not have been subjected to this – there are no excuses.
‘Again, we apologise to Jack and all at Aston Villa Football Club.’
A steward and the players quickly ran over to deal with the pitch invader after the incident
Aston Villa players ran over to confront the man but they were able to keep their cool
Birmingham City players rushed over to check on their opponent and apologise for the attack
The man was led away by police and stewards, blowing kisses to the crowd on his way out
At half-time, Aston Villa coach John Terry was first speak with the Englishman along with manager Dean Smith.
On the way down the tunnel, Grealish was subject to further goading home supporters nearby, chanting ‘one punch and he knocked him out.’
He was led away by police, blowing kisses to the crowd as he left.
A post on the force’s official Twitter feed read: ‘ARREST: Following the incident on the pitch involving an attack on an Aston Villa player; a man has been arrested and en route to a custody block. Further details to follow.’
Responding to the incident, an EFL spokesman said: ‘The EFL condemns the mindless actions of the individual who encroached on to the pitch at St Andrews on Sunday afternoon.
‘It’s a situation no player should ever be faced with.
‘In all circumstances the playing surface is for players, not supporters and those playing in the game must be able to do so safe in the knowledge they will not be subjected to this type of behaviour.
‘Whilst this incident falls within the remit of the Football Association, we will work with all the relevant parties to address the issue of player and match officials safety on the pitch and ensure the appropriate action is taken.’
This is the second incident within a week in the United Kingdom where a fan has attacked a player on the a football field.
This is the second incident in the United Kingdom within a week after an incident in Scotland
Rangers defender James Tavernier was involved in an altercation with a fan on the touchline
On Wednesday a Hibernian fan confronted Rangers captain James Tavernier during their Scottish Premiership clash at Easter Road.
The fan jumped over the hoardings and booted the ball away from Tavernier as the he was about to take a throw.
The pair then squared up and pushed each other before security and police dragged the man away.
The incident at Birmingham City followed a feisty opening to the game, in which Birmingham’s Maikel Kieftenbeld was booked for scything down Grealish, while there were also clashes between fans outside the stadium before kick-off.
Police had to hold back fans while at least one man was seen being treated by paramedics after suffering a head wound.
Fans and players have been reacting with shock at the incident on social media.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville called for a heavy punishment on Twitter. He wrote: ‘The club are going have to take a huge punishment for this to act as a deterrent in the future . A Points deduction or Empty stadium for 10 games !’
Gary Lineker branded the attack ‘abhorrent’, adding on Twitter: ‘Well done @JackGrealish1 for keeping his cool.’
West Ham midfielder Declan Rice was quick to react to the incident, tweeting: ‘Absolutely disgraceful what just happened to Jack Grealish’.
Brighton defender Shane Duffy added: ‘That is a disgrace.’
Raheem Sterling said: ‘Idiot of the year… congrats on your lifetime ban.’
The club are going have to take a huge punishment for this to act as a deterrent in the future . A Points deduction or Empty stadium for 10 games ! https://t.co/wQtcAUuvnx
— Gary Neville (@GNev2) March 10, 2019
Twice in three days we’ve seen players attacked by supporters, what is going on? Football needs to stamp this out quickly. Only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.
— Charlie Adam (@Charlie26Adam) March 10, 2019
Absolutely disgraceful what just happened to Jack Grealish
— Declan Rice (@_DeclanRice) March 10, 2019
The game was televised live on Sky Sports Football and former Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie, on duty as a pundit during half-time, called for a severe punishment and suggested the game would have had to be abandoned had Grealish suffered a serious injury.
Hendrie said: ‘I’m all for the rivalry, I’m all for the banter, but that is literally the worst thing I’ve seen on a football pitch.
‘Jack Grealish, one of the key players – what if he breaks his jaw and has to go off the pitch? That’s one key player who is out of your side. If that would have happened, I think the game would have had to have been abandoned.
‘A fan running on to the pitch and taking someone like Jack out, that could have been anything, there’s knife crime… anything could have happened out there.’
Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness, also working for Sky Sports as a pundit ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Wolves and Manchester United’s visit to Arsenal, said: ‘It shows you there’s village idiots everywhere. It’s such a sad thing to see, what has possessed him to do that?
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said similar incidents could lead to the returning of fencing
‘Have I ever been in that situation? No. And I’m thinking, if I’m in that position, how could you ever restrain yourself if he’s done that to one of your team-mates? How could you?’
Gary Neville added that football could see the return of fences in stadiums: ‘It’s not the club’s fault in some ways because, as you say the village idiot you can’t stop him doing what he’s going to do. But as a deterrent for the future there has to be a huge punishment for Birmingham City for that.
‘Because in the future if any fan thinks they can just get a five-match ban or a season ban… We’ve seen horrific incidents in other sports where fans have been attacked more seriously than that.
‘If that comes into football we’ll have fences round the ground again. I think that’s a really serious problem that needs nipping in the bud and the club needs to take a huge punishment.’
The midfielder went on to score the opening goal for Aston Villa in the second half
Grealish went on to get a modicum of revenge in the second half when he opened the scoring for the visitors.
The midfielder hit a driving shot with his left foot past goalkeeper Lee Camp in the 67th minute, before going on to celebrate by jumping into the away end.
The Villa captain was subsequently booked for his celebration.

1-10 and the rest of the odd numbers
I hope you mean this list, if not let moiii know and ill get straight on it to answer the questions :)
1. How old were you the first time you fell in love? - I fall in love everyday with scenery, people I meet, discovering new music or/and stories I hear. But ive never really been ‘in love’ with a person romantically. Maybe one day I can add my significant other to the list of things I am in love with. I feel I want to answer the question though so ill say the first time I ever tasted pasta. instant love.
2. Name the first person who broke your heart - Lloyd the weather man when I was like 6 years old. My mum said I was obsessed with this weatherman when I was a toddler then he didn't do the morning weather for this tv show anymore and I was heartbroken. I feel that if you know me and heard THE story of my ex then you will know exactly who ‘broke’ (slightly squeezed) my heart. Cant break what you didn't have.
3. How many different best friends have you had in your life? - Well right now I have 3 amazing best friends, and I stay in contact with all my other close friends, but I have had including my incredible friends now - maybe 6?
4. Do you have a best friend? - Even better I have 3!
5. Do you have any specific talent? - I know quite a lot of ‘fun’ facts about pointless information that will impress you. Also I have a good memory?? if that a talent.
6. Do you fit into any stereotypes? - I mean I do listen to indie music and enjoy Thai food while believing in equal rights for all?
7. What’s your sexuality? - see I get asked this on nearly all my asks, I have only been with men in the past so for that reason I say that I am straight although you don't know and cant help who you fall in love with or who your soulmate is
8. What’s your favorite animal? - Otters. Hands down.
9. What are your favorite pet names? - Is this a kink shaming thing? Jokes. I have two dogs (Mollie & Bob). if we are kink shaming - call me princess and I'm yours. To be fair, call me anything remotely complimentary and I will melt. My mum calls me baby bear, princess and honeybee. I think that answered all form of this question.
10. What do you think love is? - Its a difficult one, I see my friends relationships, my mum and dad, my nana and papa and then others around me. And I think it is different for all people and every definition is different. I think its getting to know every part of a person and that vulnerability and the truth - then accepting that person for all the things that is good about them but also for all the things that maybe isn't as good about them. It not about the looks or that they make you smile or trust. Yes they are a massive factor in what makes a relationship work or keep going. But I would say comfortably in being in your own skin as well as in theirs but also accepting that person for being themselves.
11.When did you discover your favorite band? - well I have lots of many favourite bands. But since I did reblog a catfish&the bottlemen post as we type, I got into this band when they opened for another band called Little Comets. But it wasn't until I seen them perform on SoccerAM (I am a geek I know) that I really got invested into the band sooo 2013/2014??13. Do you want to have kids? - if you asked me this a couple months ago then I would straight up say no, but now I would ponder the idea.15. How did you lose your virginity? - not very well, still trying to find it. Aha. The person who should remain nameless, we were seeing each other for a good amount of months we were like 16/17 and his mum was on a night out and I went back to his and we did the frickle freckle. Any further details you want then you will have to buy me dinner.17. How many times have you fallen in love, requited or not? - many? 19. Have you ever cheated? - I personally haven't, I have kissed a boy (notice NOT MAN, as he is childish) to then later finding out he had a girlfriend. Don't worry he got his karma.21. Do you prefer the romantic or sexual aspects of relationships? - cant I have both? 23. Do you have a significant other? - Not at the moment 25. Do you want a significant other? - If it was to happen then I wouldn't fight it, I always seem to back away when someone shows interest, because the fear of ‘we will either break up or spend the rest of our lives together’ scares the shit out of me. But if the right person came around I wouldn't fight it. However I am not looking or going out my way to find anyone.27. Who was the last person you loved? - I fucked it up big time with him and he fucked it up equally. But I don't think it was love. I think it was more we were used to each others companies and had a load in common?29. Name a song that makes you want to fall in love - I think its difficult to answer because youll have THAT song that realtes to you and the person. But ones I like to listen to is. The Beatles - Something, The Beach Boys - God only knows, Ed Sheeran - Wake Me Up, Van Morrison..

Where are they now? The team from Kane’s last England U21 game
Tumblr media
Back in the summer of 2015, Harry Kane had just started to demonstrate the quality we’ve all become accustomed to by now after a breakthrough season at Tottenham.Kane scored 31 goals in all competitions during the 2014-15 season and hasn’t looked back since. The 27-year-old is now captain for club and country, and well on track to become the Premier League’s all-time top scorer and England’s as well. That form resulted in Roy Hodgson handing the striker his debut as a second-half substitute for Wayne Rooney in a friendly against Lithuania. He set the tone for his international career by scoring after just 80 seconds, adding the fourth in a 4-0 win. He’s been a regular for the Three Lions ever since, but he continued to turn out for Gareth Southgate’s Under-21s back in June 2015 in a disappointing European Championship campaign. With Kane leading the line, Southgate’s Young Lions were dumped out at the group stage after losing two of their three matches. Their fate was sealed in a 3-1 defeat to Italy, which turned out to be Kane’s final appearance – but what became of his team-mates that day? Jack Butland Three years after being given his senior England debut as a teenager against Italy when he was yet to play a minute of Premier League football, Butland continued to turn out for the Under-23s. Eight further caps followed for the Three Lions between 2015 and 2018, but he never fulfilled his potential as a future England No.1. His reputation has never quite recovered since Stoke’s 2018 relegation and subsequent struggles in the Championship. Most recently seen warming the bench for Crystal Palace.  Carl Jenkinson It was always adorable how much Jenkinson loved playing for the club he supported as a child, but it became increasingly clear over time that he wasn’t quite cut out for Arsenal. After eight years on their books, and three loans away, Jenkinson signed for Nottingham Forest in August 2019. He’s only been a bit-part player at the City Ground, totalling fewer than 1000 minutes across just 10 appearances in two full seasons. A boyhood Arsenal fan who lived the dream. He formed a formidable partnership with Ruben Dias in Manchester City’s 2020-21 title triumph and has started all three games for England as they’ve kept three successive clean sheets in the Euro 2020 group stage. There were plenty of bright moments in the years prior at Everton and City, having first caught the eye back at boyhood club Barnsley, but he’s finally delivering consistently and reliably for club and country. Ben Gibson The nephew of Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson, Nunthorpe-born centre-back started to break through for the Smoggies back in 2013 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club before he joined Burnley for a joint club-record £15million in 2018. Things didn’t go plan at Turf Moor; he scored on his only Premier League appearance for the Clarets, playing just 63 minutes in two seasons. He remains contracted at Burnley, but spent 2020-21 on loan at Norwich – he appears to have got his career back on track, having made 27 appearances in their promotion-winning campaign. Luke Garbutt Carlo Ancelotti famously had no clue who Garbutt is, which tells you the kind of impact he made during his 11 years at Goodison Park. After leaving Everton permanently in 2020, he joined Blackpool. The left-back was a key player as Neil Critchley’s Tangerines secured promotion to the Championship. Carlo Ancelotti on Luke Garbutt leaving Everton after 11 years at the club: “Who?” 😬🤣 pic.twitter.com/tZMSppRdAU — Joe Williams (@Joewillo180) June 30, 2020 Jake Forster-Caskey (Ruben Loftus Cheek, ’63) Brighton academy graduate Forster-Caskey hasn’t featured for the Young Lions since 2015, and his club career has unfortunately been severely hampered by injuries. The midfielder has made over 100 appearances for Charlton since he joined in 2017, but in May he suffered the second anterior cruciate ligament injury of his career and faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines. Loftus Cheek has received 10 caps for England, four of which came at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but there’s a sense his career has stalled after an indifferent season on loan at relegation Fulham in 2020-21. Nathaniel Chalobah Southgate evidently had a lot of time for Chalobah, and handed him his debut in the closing stages of a memorable 3-2 win away to Spain in the Nations League back in October 2018. But the midfielder hasn’t quite kicked on as his former Under-21s coach might have hoped he would, though he did play a prominent role for Watford as they bounced straight back to the Premier League in 2020-21. If it can happen for Kalvin Phillips… Never say never? Nathan Redmond Redmond moved to Southampton for a reported £10million following Norwich’s relegation in 2016. The winger has scored 27 goals in 199 appearances across five seasons for Saints. The winger made his first and only appearance for England as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany in March 2017. He remains eligible to make the switch to Jamaica, where he has family heritage, and in April 2021 it was reported that the Jamaican Football Federation had enquired about whether he’d be interested. Pep Guardiola’s a fan too… we think? Last night's game between Man City and Southampton was full of drama… A last minute winner ⚽ Mad celebrations 🙌 Plus an INTENSE full-time rant from Pep Guardiola to Nathan Redmond 😡😡 pic.twitter.com/FtjD1ac8HT — Soccer AM (@SoccerAM) November 30, 2017 Danny Ings A few weeks after his final appearance for England’s Under-21s – in which he played in the No.10 role behind Kane – Ings signed for Liverpool. The Reds were eventually made to pay £6.5million to Burnley for his signature after the case went to a tribunal. A months later, Jurgen Klopp arrived, and he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first training session under the German coach. Three years later, after just 25 appearances and four goals, he moved to Southampton where he rekindled his career, originally on loan. His 22 Premier League goals in 2019-20 saw Ings return to England contention, with a couple of caps in 2020 following his 2015 debut. Jesse Lingard One of the stars of England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, Lingard’s career seemed to hit a bit of a brick wall from there. He found his mojo again on a loan to West Ham during the latter half of the 2020-21 season, notching nine goals and four assists in 16 appearances for the club. After a couple of lively displays in the final pre-tournament friendlies, he can consider himself a tad unfortunate not to have made Southgate’s final 26.
