I thought I swore off my hero academia years ago but here I am reading Yesterday Upon the Stair. Not particularly interesting (not a fan of Fanon Deku) and hard to read (cringy) at some points, but I was curious about what people were raving about. Maybe it’ll get better in the next 50 chapters. Just gotta hold out and maybe I’ll find a great fic. 4/10 so far.

thoughts: ugh, what a good fic. it hurts in all the right ways, and dadzawa and hurt!bakugou is satisfying in a visceral way.

When Midoriya Hisashi finally comes home from years-long work outside the country, Izuku expected to have some family down time that he hadn’t ever had with him since… well, forever. Catching-up talk, maybe. Chatting while drinking coffee or eating ice cream at some fancy outdoor patio. Definitely fumbling around for an explanation about him developing a Quirk pretty much out of nowhere.

However, his expectations were turned upside down, because apparently, his father isn’t what he seems, and Izuku doesn’t know what to expect anymore.

What Izuku knows is that the appearance of Midoriya Hisashi triggers a domino effect that sends his whole world toppling down. And honestly, being accused of turning around and becoming a villain is just a bonus. When have life ever passed the chance to fuck him over, anyway?

thoughts: this is, hands down, my favorite fic of the week. i was completely blown away by the sheer concept of the fic. it’s so interesting, and such an original take on “villain” (in a loose sense) Hisashi that i won’t spoil, but it makes for an interesting and tense read. please read this. i absolutely lost it reading this fic.

A Hero for a Villain by ZeroUnitRGB

Those words had not been used to disparage Shouji’s appearance. Rather, they most certainly came from a place of sympathy. Shouji had a hard time believing they were evidence of the villain’s hypocrisy, but a reflection of his own loneliness. So even though he was a hero student on the opposite path, he’d made a vow back then. And even though it had been years ago, he swore he would see it through.

thoughts: oh, shouji is so underappreciated and this fic is a great look into his character and his thoughts! i really enjoyed it. [contains heroes: rising spoilers]

thoughts: while deaging fics are usually not my fare, this fic was an absolute find and such a great read. sweet, soft, angsty, and funny - covers it all and wraps it in a package of tiny deku.

thoughts: oh, i loved this au to bits. this fic turned my heart inside-out. i loved the dynamic, and i loved seeing how management student!izuku differs from canon in both a bittersweet and touching way, and how that changes his path forward. (and his relationship with shinsou).

thoughts: oh, yeah. oh, yeah. love seeing fics that bring up some painful pasts, and i like that this one focuses on izuku & todoroki.

thoughts: the author and i have been talking about this au for ages and it’s finally posted. i have seen this au at its bare bones and it is now blossoming into a great fic. if you’re looking for tsukauchi fic, bakugou goodness, or izuku whump this one’s for you!

An ABO AU (Rated M at the highest, btw. If there’s sex, it’ll be like one or two scenes that are cut aways. The M rating would mostly be for the subject matter in general.)

Okay. Before you start running away screaming I have mixed feelings on this particular fandom AU, too. I’ve seen it done really well and really badly and it’s become sort of like this “I kinda want to try it and see if I can’t make one of the good ones that even people who don’t like this genre don’t mind reading” lost Unicorn of a writing challenge. I’ve just never really been able to settle on a fandom to try it out on, or gotten past thinking up one or two scenes.

Recently the old muse has actually thrown a plot at me for this for BakuDeku that’s pretty structured and has a clear start middle an end.

General Idea: Izuku decided when he turned four that he and Kacchan were meant to be together. When he presented as an Alpha, this desire only increased (and his possessive leanings suddenly made much more sense!), no matter what Kacchan presented as. If he had to resign himself to being a pervert who wanted another alpha, then so be it. To his great relief, however, Kacchan presented as a Beta and Izuku didn’t need to worry. Izuku knew full well he was one of the few willing to put up with Kacchan’s harsh and brash personality.

He could wait.

Katsuki, in the meanwhile, is a late presenter and is pretty sure he’ll be an alpha like his mother or at worst a beta like his father (he prays for it every night).  However, his worst nightmares come true when he presents as an Omega at home and realizes his entire life is over. Omega are sent away to start families. They don't get to be heroes. They don’t get to be in charge. They sit in some home waiting for an alpha that will own them, for all intents and purposes. His mother, bless her, can’t bear to let this happen to her boy and helps Katsuki hide his status and pays off a doctor to write him down as a Beta.

Everything goes perfectly as he continues attending U.A. until Katsuki hits an early heat at school and it all comes crashing down around him when someone finds him.

Pros: I have a lot of it thought out and pretty solidified in the old noggin already (as you might have noticed from the detailed summary above) and it’d cross “Write an ABO fic” off the old bucket list. So, that’s a plus. I’d also get to continue exploring a jealous/possessive Izuku and do some world building.

And again, I’ve got enough of it in my head I might just do it anyway.

Cons: It’d be kinda dark which defeats the purpose of looking for something light hearted to relax with. That and the entire premise would involve an Alpha!Izuku and a (secretly) Omega Katsuki, which is kinda funny ‘cause I usually prefer it the other way around but that’s what the story wants. *puts head on table* It has me conflicted. That and all the scenes I picture involve Izuku being closer to my portrayal of him in say, One Exception, more so than Garden Boy. So it’d be a fine line between “I want to keep him Canon” and “How much can I get away with by focusing on his negative traits more with ‘He’s an Alpha’ as my justification. In other words, I still want an aggressive/protective Izuku, but I want to touch on his kind side, too. It’d be hard to find that balance. XD

Forced Company

Situations that force Izuku and Katsuki into the same space are always fun. Especially if it involves forcing them to work together/talk/get stuff out of their chests, etc. Someone just suggested a Road Trip AU that might work, but I’m kinda leaning toward sticking closer to canon if I can.

I kinda of like the idea of either splitting them up from everyone else during a battle and dropping them in either the middle of dangerous territory (like a villain’s lair, etc.) or in the middle of nowhere (Survival! XD).

Pros: It’d be easier to be light hearted and funny while still getting in my serious moments. Lots of room for various moods, which is nice.

Cons: I’m concerned I’ll just be recycling material from my other fics. My Villain Deku fics & Garden Boy covered a lot of ground considering their relationship and interpretations of it and stuff that’s very canon-based meta and head canons, so I’m not sure how much I want to type the same stuff in new scenarios over and over. XD

I guess I could solve that with an already established relationship, but I like characters getting together more than reading about them already in a relationship (unless it’s got drama, like unhealthy dynamics or something). Ha ha ha. It’s the romance lover in me. :P

Something With Dominant Katuski

I really like aggressive, dominant, violent Katsuki but I’m having a hard time coming up with something longer than a one shot or that doesn’t over exaggerate him. Sadomasochistic themes are fine, but I don’t want to take it too far.

But there is something fun about Aggressive Katsuki and just an unfazed Izuku like “He’s awesome” that has a nice counterbalance.

My general problem with this is I have a lot of loose scenes in my head, but nothing really solid or resembling a plot. It’s more like stuff I’d probably just include in whatever prompt I end up with. XD

Monster AU

Just for kicks it might be fun to play with a “one of them is a monster’ AU. I’ve seen a lot of good ones and whether it’s something like a Tokyo Ghoul fusion or Soul Eater Fusion (both of which are kinda like the ABO prompt in which ‘I want to write one, but have never really settled on a fandom for it’) or just ‘Oops, he’s a mermaid/werewolf/vampire/whatever’ sound like fun.

Pros: Lots of potential for fun things. 

Cons: A lot of these don’t lend themselves too well to sticking close to canon. The more AU and away from canon a fic gets, the more I think I should just be writing an original story, so that’s a dilemma. XD
