“(As of today October 5th 2020), I was gonna do another The Week In Tory but, try as I might, I could not find a thing they’d done wrong since Friday.
No corruption. No ineptitude. No lies. No hypocrisy. Just a solid 96 hours of honest, decent and reliable governance.
Only kidding: it’s an absolute shit-show...
1. A report found the “Eat Out To Help Out” scheme cost £500m and didn’t do a single thing to improve the economy of the UK’s hospitality sector
However, it did help to double the number of infections, although they forgot how to count, so didn't notice
2. As infections spiked, the government briefly woke up and introduced local lockdowns
But predictably, the local councils responsible for implementing the new plans were given literally (not making this up) 5 minutes warning and no additional resources whatsoever
3. It was revealed absolutely not a single penny of the £1.58bn “Arts Rescue Plan” announced to great fanfare in July has actually been handed out to the artists or venues relying on it
So unsurprisingly, the country’s largest cinema chain had to close, costing 5,500 jobs
But thankfully Work and Pensions Minister Thérèse Coffey was on hand to reassuringly tell them they can all become Care Workers with "very little training" (I'm sure nursing is a doddle)
Slight problem: in June the government froze millions in funding for training care workers
But it’ll be fine, won’t it? I mean, who needs to train care workers? We have plenty, don't we? Oh, hold on: this week it was revealed care workers are caring for 2,400 families each, which is 10x the recommended number
4. Good News for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as a poll of Tory Members found they think Gavin Williamson is even shitter than the Prime Minister.
Bad News: they think every other Conservative MP is better than the PM, and only 28% of them think he’s up to the job. And that’s his fan-club.
5. So UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson went on a charm offensive (and did both), and promised to build 40 new hospitals
Seemingly he had forgotten – or hoped we had – that he also promised to build 40 new hospitals a year ago, and then … how can I put this? … didn’t
The 40 new hospitals have £3.7bn budget
Unfortunately, 40 new hospitals would cost at least £24bn
And there's backlog of £6bn in maintenance and repairs, so the day it was launched the “new hospital fund” was £2.3bn short of building a single Lego Hospital
6. Last week Boris Johnson said the Covid rules were simple, then forgot them, then said they were complicated, then said he’d fine people breaking them, then didn’t fine his own dad
This week his own dad broke the rules for a second time and [tumbleweed]
So 6 days after the PM went on TV to assure us the lockdown rules were simple, the govt has announced it will announce some simplified rules. But not yet. Soon. In a bit. First we need another few levels of announcements about announcements, because there’s no rush fellas.
7. I always try to find a supportive and approving quote about Boris Johnson from an star-struck anonymous Tory MP: this week, I have an embarrassment of riches
“It’s like ‘carry on coronavirus’, with Boris as Sid James and Matt Hancock as Kenneth Williams”
“I find myself bewildered at the clownish lack of professionalism in Downing St”
“If you drop something which is entirely ornamental [meaning Boris] it tends to lose its appeal”
“We’ve gone from eat out to help out, to drink up and piss off”
8. The Tories called loudly for the firing of the SNP’s Margaret Ferrier for travelling by train after being found positive for Covid
No word yet about them calling for the removal Tory MP Peter Gibson, who travelled 250 miles by train with Covid symptoms
Peter Gibson is part of the new “Red Wall” intake of Tory MPs, so presumably was keen to return to his constituency to inform them that 1/3 of them would be £1000 a year worse off due to government cuts
9. It was revealed that 5 years after Tories pledged to end money laundering with the announcement “there is no place for dirty money in Britain”, absolutely no action has yet been taken, and the legislation has been gathering dust since 2015
10. But thankfully, non-corrupt ministers like Robert Jenrick, who takes “donations” (which are apparently different from bribes) from housing companies, are still doing the right thing, such as unlawfully overruling his own officials to grant a £50m tax saving to a donor
And a legal challenge was launched over a £580k contract to friends of Dominic Cummings, with no competitive tendering
Oh, and Health Secretary Matt Hancock takes “donations” from the horse-racing fraternity, and excluded the highly profitable Cheltenham Festival from the lockdown
The former Chief Scientific Advisor said Cheltenham Festival “probably helped to accelerate the spread” of coronavirus
11. Not that we’d know, because it appears a mere 227 days after the first case, the govt still hasn’t learned to import data into an Excel Spreadsheet
Any IT manager would tell you Excel is not the way to store the data of up to 67 million people – it is spreadsheet software for a max of 1 million records
16,000 tests were lost, and over 50,000 potentially infectious people may have been missed by contact tracers
12. On 2nd June, Boris Johnson announced he would take “direct control” of Covid
So 125 days later, he couldn’t tell us the social distancing rules, how many records had been lost, or explain why 4 different lockdown regimes exist in Greater Manchester alone
13. But human spork Health Secretary Matt Hancock rushed out to say NHS Test and Trace are working hard, neglecting to mention the slightly awkward truth that NHS Test and Trace is not run by the NHS, but by a private business under the guidance of the effortlessly terrible Dido Harding
Highly effective private business Serco do our contact tracing, which is why some of its tracing staff report being so under-occupied they have managed to watch 3 entire series of The Good Place and play computer games all day for months, while 60,000 Britons died
14. I have no idea if the Queen has noticed her government’s honesty, but this week she said “having trusted, reliable sources of information is vital”
We enter flu season under a government you can trust, but who accidentally failed to send the flu vaccine to GPs for over a month
15. And the average hours for teachers increased from 53 to 70 hours per week, as they attempt to cope with endlessly shifting instructions
Teachers are also having to be cleaners in schools, as there is no additional money for adaptations to keep staff and students safe
16. As the government prepares for 4 million unemployed in 2021, Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak said he would introduce “job coaches”, and said 4 million of us being coached for *up to* 2 hours to do jobs that don’t exist would be “the first time that people will realise government could be helpful”
17. A report found “trust between ministers and staff is being severely eroded” by a 7-month delay in the bullying inquiry into Home Secretary and horcrux, Priti Patel
She then made a speech in which she voluntarily opted to define herself as opposite to those who “do good”
18. Possibly to distract from this, health minister Lord Bethell rushed out to claim Covid 19 would make us as proud as the Olympics
Covid 19 has killed about as many as you can fit into an Olympic Stadium, so maybe that’s what he meant
A quick detour into the magical, spinning world of gaffe-hamster Lord Bethell: last week he tried to distract from govt student cockups by claiming Covid 19 was predominantly caused by “late-night intimacy” and not by, for example, failing to trace infections
Earlier, Bethell tried to distract from govt A-Level cockups by claiming him failing A-Levels didn’t prevent him hustling to his lofty position (momentarily forgetting the hustling assistance he gained when his dad, the 4th Lord Bethell, hustled his way into a grave)
19. And finally, in an image that will haunt you, Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced he would only snitch on his neighbours if he was “watching them having an Animal House-style hot tub party”. Watching. He said watching. Matt Hancock. Watching.“-Russ

Hunter’s Moon Headcanons
I’m still kinda hesitant to post em, but screw it, I’mma gonna do it.
There’s still more to eventually list, I’m still kinda brainstorming. Also a shoutout to @linkedsoulwrites for some headcanons and tons of encouragement ;w;
Click the Keep reading button to check em out. (It all takes place after the story, so spoilers if you haven’t finished).
During their travel
They often stay at inns or any type of place that offers a room.
In the era they live in, the keepers do not hesitate to give them separate rooms. An unmarried couple in the same room together is kinda frowned upon.
Zack HATES it a lot, and HATES being lectured about it more.
Either Zack or Ray will sneak into each other’s room anyway. Damn the consequences!
Zack is aware he has bounty hunters after him, but doesn’t hesitate to take them all out. None of them can last very long against him and Ray.
To make ends meet, the two either loot what the bounty hunters have, they sell it off or they themselves take up odd jobs or even bounties while staying in a town.
Zack eventually figures out a way to get the bounty hunters off his back, and gives one of them his old false leg as “proof” for them to claim the money. Zack and Rachel live their life with no problems, everyone wins.
Zack normally gets Ray to read things for him, he only knows very little when it comes to reading.
There are days where they’re perfectly fine on funds and Zack lets Rachel explore to her heart’s content.
Zack secretly likes that glimmer in Ray’s eyes when she learns new things about each place they go to.
They don’t like to go into cities very much, aside from it being so crowded, they both feel wary since they grew up in shady cities themselves.
Rachel loves to learn about other cultures, ranging from how the people live to their religions.
Zack learns a little something too, but mostly shrugs it off.
He likes to poke fun about it too, her reactions are so amusing to him.
They both enjoy that sense of freedom from the places they once lived in. They are free to do what they want and go where they want to go.
There are rare nights of Ray having nightmares, it’s worse when she’s in a different room than Zack. She’ll either crawl into his room or he’ll rush to her aid. Fuck getting an earful from anyone else.
Zack sometimes gets nightmares as well, but mostly of the battle he had with Danny. Something about it left a nasty impact on him. Ray’s there to help remind him that Danny’s gone and never coming back to antagonize the both of them.
Zack’s Nightmare mostly consists of twisted forms of either Catherine and Danny, and even confronting the beast within himself.
When they don’t find a town to sleep in, Zack offers himself for Ray to sleep on. He’ll keep her warm while he keeps watch during the night.
The night after and they do find a town, Ray lets Zack sleep the hours he missed.
Zack will spend time with her and wander around town to make up for it.
When taking a job
Jobs can vary between simple labor to a dangerous bounty hunt.
Zack tries to take on the more dangerous jobs himself, but Ray won’t let him (especially since he has physical limits now).
They both have to remind each other to not take a job without being prepared first, either tends to forget...mostly Zack.
Ray is much more cautious during the more dangerous jobs, but notices the people there don’t fight with as much ferocity like Danny did. She refuses to lower her guard though.
Dangerous jobs are what keeps Zack’s bloodthirsty nature in check, it lets him kill people legally…and he’s totally okay with that.
Zack gets furious when Ray does get hurt, and also the other way around.
The more dangerous jobs mean bigger rewards so they can travel longer, even though Zack is reluctant to Ray tag along with them. Then again, he did teach her how to fight…and is pretty damn proud of it.
Though Ray is a very capable fighter, she still prefers to use a pistol. She becomes sharper each time she uses it.
There are rare moments where Zack could just knock a guy out and the job is done.
Some casual work Zack doesn’t mind too much, easy money.
They still have this dread of running into beasts again, or worse.
Around other people
They’re not new to receiving strange looks, because of the clothes they wear to the weapons they openly carry.
People think of them as quite the odd couple, Zack is a blunt man of little words to the people while Ray’s demeanor is kinder.
Of course, people tend to gossip when they see an unmarried couple together. It makes Zack pretty pissed, but Ray’s there to calm him down. He’ll even flaunt his affection for Ray to spite the gabbers.
Ray does most of the talking for the two, since Zack will either say very little, swear with every sentence, or plain argue.
Smiling people used to piss Zack off, but he has Ray, so fuck it.
Zack always keeps his face covered, be it with a face-mask to even wrappings.
Zack doesn’t care if people look at him strange, but won’t hesitate in giving others the death stare if they look at Ray the wrong way.
When they finally have a home
Zack and Ray are both glad they both have a place to call their own.
Plus, no worries about having to go into separate rooms, they can sleep in the same room to their heart’s content.
They do have neighbors, but their homes aren’t very close by…which is good for Zack…for…reasons.
They live in a small town, there is a city only a carriage ride away, so it is well stocked in trade.
Ray is quick in adjusting to the new life, though it took Zack a little longer.
With his bounty gone, no one knows of Zack’s past crimes, which is hard for him to get used to…but he can’t really complain…probably.
Zack does the heavy work, Ray helps cook and clean, though she does try to teach Zack, but he refuses to go anywhere near fire, even if it’s small.
Zack feels weird dressing in regular civilian clothing when outings with Ray ask for it.
Likes when Ray does it though.
Zack worries about people finding out about this other side of him, or even of Ray’s former life.
Rachel does help quell his uncertainties. She’s here to make sure his inner instincts don’t get the better of him, and reminds him that they both swore to keep their secret forever.
The town does hold their own festivals, Ray is always excited to go, Zack is pretty meh about it because that means being around large crowds of people. He relents anyway, they do have some pretty damn good food.
There have been moments people asked for Zack’s “help” since he’s crazy strong. He does hate being told what to do, but if the job involves smashing things, then sign him the fuck up. Sometimes watching the people’s stunned reactions is entertaining to him.
·After a busy day, the two enjoy relaxing in their home together, be it on a couch or a bed.
Zack’s Bestial Side
Zack has a very hard time controlling it, Ray is around to help his human side keep it in check.
It emerges most commonly when he either picks up the scent of blood, or when his most primal instincts are most active, such as rage, hunger, or even lust.
He really hates when it shows and does his absolute damndest to ignore it. It doesn’t feel right to him.
It causes him great pain when it does show, the body isn’t meant to change into something else so quickly.
He has nearly gone full beast once, and only once. His physical body completely changed, but his mind was still there. Zack worries the next time, he won’t come back.
Zack can barely make a sentence when he’s mostly beast. It’s a body he’s not adapted to and can’t understand it.
His body wants to act mostly on instinct, so it’s hard for him to act using sense of self.
Signs of his bestial side showing is most commonly a glow in his gold eye, claws, and sharp teeth…sometimes growling.
He has increased strength and speed as well, it did show once during a bounty hunt, poor guy immediately surrendered – taking him in alive increased the reward…so…yay?
There is a time his beast side craves blood, and he winds up biting himself out of frustration.
Zack reluctantly asked for Ray to put him down if he does lose his sense of self, because he won’t be able to live with himself if he harms or kills her.
There are some humorous moments, he does tend to act a bit doggish, like chewing whatever he got his hands on when he’s bored.
Ray does notice this and teases him a little, sometimes calling him a puppy.
He does not like that, and doesn’t know why he lets her get away with it.
Parts of Zack’s past (will work on Ray’s later)
Zack did have people he made a sort of silent truce with. A band of gypsies nursed him back to health when he was knocking on death’s door in his teen years. It was a short period of time where he and them did good turns for one another.
Zack killed or knocked out anyone who gave the gypsies a hard time, and they gave him cover to hide from authorities, and sometimes their share of food.
Eventually the city rounded them up for false crimes and wasted no time in execution.
That’s when Zack escalated his killings.
Zack has had sex before, but HATED IT (mostly himself). He did it as a desperate survival necessity. He never did it again, until he met Ray, and for all the right reasons.
There are times where his human side did kick in and would give up his steal of food to a kid starving on the street. A semi-hopeful attempt to keep them from becoming like him.
Even he had dreams of escaping the hellhole he lived in, but they are just dreams.
Zack learns about places to avoid, the ones with the foulest stench meant it was riddled with disease, and he stays the fuck away.
Those with red lamps are where the lowest of the low go, he can pick off city victims easily there…but the residents creep him the hell out.
Sometimes he’d sneak into the main city, besides for looking for victims, but also better scores of shit to steal for his next meal.
He learns that his victims give him a better reaction when he wants to give chase.
Zack is used to living in poor conditions, rotting in jail was nothing to him, hence why the court of judges pushed for execution (or tried, mwahaha).
Love Life (NSFW)
They are not secretive about being a couple.
If Zack wants to kiss her, then he god damn will. So will Ray.
Zack will fight until the ends of the Earth when it comes to having a single room. He only stops when Ray doesn’t want too much trouble.
Zack is pretty damn affectionate towards Ray, when he tries to say it, he feels like his tongue is in knots. Actions are easier to convey. Ray learns to read his body language rather quickly.
Ray eventually made the first move of becoming intimate. (NSFW starts here)
Zack was unsure at first, he did want her, and was surprised with how bold she was. He did not hesitate to take the hint.
Zack does like to get Rachel riled up, it makes her desire him more.
Rachel learns to do the same, and she can see it in his eyes. (His gold eye glows much brighter)
Zack has a damn hard time controlling himself though, there are times he’d bite or lightly claw her, and he’d quickly apologize after.
Sometimes his moans are replaced with growls.
They both prefer a position where they can see each other, their love and lust filled expressions are one of many turn ons for one another.
Zack does cave into his instincts a lot when he’s intimate, almost like a hungry wolf. He gets very explorative with his mouth.
When Ray does the same, she finds out he’s a lot more sensitive than she thought, Zack almost tore the mattress to shreds while preventing himself from pouncing on her.
They both know people will talk, but screw them…they love each other. They’ll officially tie the knot sooner or later. They’re spiritually married.
Ever since becoming intimate with Ray, another instinct woke up inside of Zack. It shows itself maybe once or twice a year, but he does go into a sort of heat for a few days.
Zack was so confused and internally embarrassed. Complained a lot about the house being too hot, which left Ray puzzled (it wasn’t hot at all).
As soon as he so much glanced at Ray, his head filled with tooooonnsss of thoughts and urges. Fuck, it almost left him drooling.
He locked himself in their room, thinking he might hurt her if he lost control of himself.
Ray got worried and figured out how to pick the lock (or Zack did a shit job at locking it)
Zack tried to get away or hide, it only made her more concerned.
Poor Ray got herself into a pretty big predicament as soon as she laid a hand on Zack.
She did get the idea that he wanted to make love, but damn, she didn’t expect HOW BADLY, Zack literally ripped his own clothes off with ease. (She had to buy new ones)
Ray couldn’t even think straight when the deed was being done, he touched every inch of her body. He did bite an absolute lot. The mattress and wooden bed frame didn’t even survive, RIP.
Ray couldn’t walk the next day, she does figure out what Zack’s “problem” was. Sort of never lets him hear the end of it. Zack is so damn embarrassed…but slightly refreshed. Apologizes a thousand times.
Next day, Zack sleeps on the sofa (Ray kinda earned it for putting up with him). The following night, Ray allows him into her arms…after they replaced the bed, of course.
Ray eventually figures out when his “problems” surface and notes it on a calendar…one she has to tuck away from any visitors.
Zack doesn’t know if he should be worried with how precautionary Ray gets around that time.
She doesn’t fucking joke about being precautionary. She makes lists of do’s and don’ts along with buying extras of everything.
Ray doesn’t mind when Zack gets a little too passionate, but sometimes she will tell Zack that he does need to cool it. Claws can be a little much when he can barely control himself.
In an attempt to cease his need to scratch, Zack wound up breaking the head board.
Both Zack and Ray are really fucking glad their neighbors aren’t close.
They do keep their bedroom secrets to themselves, though it’s hard for Ray to explain bite marks. Sometimes she stays at home until they’ve faded enough to not be noticeable.
When they aren’t exhausted (can’t say for the certain days though), they do like to whisper to one another.
Ray has a habit of drawing shapes on Zack’s body when they’re relaxing after a passionate session.
When days are normal, there will be days where just cuddling and sweet kisses will suffice, but if either do get in the mood, they both can read each other’s body language rather well.
Sometimes Zack nuzzles without thinking.
Rachel finds it both adorable and endearing.
Rachel likes it when Zack isn’t hiding his real self, she calls him handsome every day to remind him of that and not his scars.
Zack is internally ecstatic when she says it.
They’re both everything to one another, the two have changed their lives for the better and are glad they’ve met.
Zack has never known what love is like, but he knows for damn sure he feels it when he’s with Rachel.
Rachel knows that Zack hates formalities, but she’s noticed that he reacts differently when only she says his first name. He doesn’t get agitated anymore, but instead, he really likes it.
His beasty behavior does make showing affection a little awkward, when he does want to give Ray a simple kiss on the cheek, he might lick on accident.
Even though he hates dressing in civilian clothing, he still enjoys going on outings with Ray.
The two will tell each other often how grateful they are in their life.
They both enjoy the roles of husband and wife.
Home Life
There are times where Zack has troubles getting up because of his leg, Ray is there to help him.
Some days Zack will take the false leg off when it becomes too uncomfortable to keep on. Ray got him a walking cane just for those days.
Sometimes he still walks with it with the leg on, mostly on regular outings. Cobblestone streets are hard for him to keep balance. Regular brick streets are much easier.
Ray thinks he looks fancy when he does walk with it.
When they’re not out to work on a hunting job, the two do like to spend time together, either at home or out in town.
Ray enjoys in taking the task in fixing up Zack’s wrappings, Zack secretly admits to himself that she does a better job at it than he does.
Zack does learn how to actually fix stuff than just outright smashing everything, he wants to help too if they’re living together for the rest of their lives.
Future Plans
After a few months of settling into their new home, Zack proposes to Ray. She accepts without hesitation.
Zack enjoys the thought of Ray being a mother, he wouldn’t mind starting a family with her, but there’s a bit of a problem with that idea
The two tend to travel a lot when they go out to do bounty hunting jobs.
They still have Old Blood coursing through their veins, and they worry about passing it on to any future children.
They still can’t shake the thought about what Danny tried to do with her, and fear that such a result may still happen.
They do consider the thought of settling for good and possibly adoption.
When the pair go to a nearby city to pick up some things like new clothes (Zack has a tendency to tear em up), or something for the house, they come across a kid being chased down for stealing bread. Zack’s all too familiar with that situation, Ray stops the vendor from hurting the kid and pays for the bread. Ray sees that nostalgic look on Zack’s face, and asks if he’s thinking of taking the young kid in. Of course, he shyly nods.
The kid distrusts them at first, but Zack is the one that talks to him because he knows of it’s like. The kid doesn’t feel alone when it comes to struggling on the streets, and is actually glad he’s being given a home.
Takes all of them a while to adjust to a new addition to the home, but eventually start behaving like a normal family.
When they settled, Arty seems to fit in to the family rather well. They’re all a bunch of misfits, and it couldn’t be more perfect.
Their adopted child is named Arthur, but prefers being called Arty. He thinks his full name is dorky.
Arty’s father was a military man, he never returned home when sent to be on duty. His mother passed away from illness and no other family members wanted to take him in.
The couple do plan on what to do next, they can’t go out to do regular hunting jobs and Ray doesn’t trust in leaving Zack alone to do them without her keeping his humanity in check.
Apparently hunting and trapping is just as good, Zack gets to kill something while the pair stay in the area. Who knew pelts could sell for a good amount? Even if his methods weird people out.
Their kid asks about stories of their travels a lot, and enjoys hearing every word, though Ray has to dumb down the violence.
Though Zack and Ray are both caring parents, they are diverse in their own way. Ray is the nurturing parent, while Zack is the dad you’ll take with you if someone threatens to beat you up.
Zack was worried about their adopted son being scared of his scars, but he doesn’t mind them at all. He thinks his scars prove his dad is tough. Zack is amused by it and plays along.
Both Zack and Ray feel touched when they’re addressed as Mom and Dad.
Zack is hesitant to tell their adopted son how he lost his leg, but he keeps the summary very simple. He lost it in a fight to save Ray, and that is that.
Since Arty knows his new dad used to be a street rat like him, they both tend to share stories of tricks they used to pull when stealing or evading the authorities, sometimes they learn something new.
One day, Ray becomes very ill, Zack is panicked and their adopted son fetches a house doctor. Her illness is due to pregnancy, Zack nearly faints. They are all surprised, both Zack and Ray are a little nervous though because of those inner fears. They do want the child more than anything though.
They assure Arty that they want him to stay in their life too, he’s their child also.
The child is a normal human baby, with no evidence of old blood.
They have a son, named Reese.
Both Arthur and Reese get along very well, though they are little trouble makers.
Zack will teach his sons how to fight and hunt when they’re older.
Ray teaches all of her boys how to read (even Zack).

Wombwell Rainbow Interviews
I am honoured and privileged that the following writers local, national and international have agreed to be interviewed by me. I gave the writers two options: an emailed list of questions or a more fluid interview via messenger. The usual ground is covered about motivation, daily routines and work ethic, but some surprises too. Some of these poets you may know, others may be new to you. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.
Julian Stannard
is a poet and a university teacher. He obtained his PhD. from UEA and is now a Reader in English and Creative writing at the University of Winchester, where he is the Programme Leader for the MA in Creative and Critical writing. He writes critical studies – his most recent book was about the work of Basil Bunting   (http://writersandtheirwork.co.uk/index.php/author/authors-s-u/201-stannard-julian) – as well as reviews, essays, and poetry. His most recent collection is What were you thinking? (http://www.cbeditions.com/stannard.html)(CB Editions, 2016). His work appears variously in TLS, Poetry, Manhattan Review, Poetry Review, Poetry London, Spectator, Guardian, Telegraph, The Honest Ulsterman, The Forward Book of Poetry (2017) and Nuova Corrente (Italy). An essay on the poetry of Leonard Cohen appears in Spirituality and Desire in Leonard Cohen’s Songs and Poems (Cambridge Scholars, 2017.) He is at present writing a study of British and American poetry entitled Anglo-American Conversations in Poetry: 1910-2015 (Peter Lang). He has read at various literary festivals, including the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, as well as literary venues in the UK, mainland Europe and the USA – including London, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Paris, Rome, Prague, Genoa, Munich, New York and Boston. He teaches for the Poetry School (London) and is often invited to organise and lead workshops in a freelance capacity. He is both a Hawthornden and Bogliasco Fellow and has been a visiting Erasmus scholar at Charles University Prague and the University of Warsaw. Presently he is an External Examiner for the MA in Creative Writing at Birmingham City University and has been nominated for both Forward and Pushcart Prizes for his poetry. From 1984 to 2005 he lived for long periods in Italy, where he taught English and American Literature at the University of Genoa. He has written poetry about that mysterious port city and is now working on a bilingual publication of his Genoese poems for Il Canneto Publishers ( Genoa).

The Interview
1. What inspired you  to write poetry?
As a young kid I was sent to a boarding school near Sheffield. I had been living in Malaysia  up until that moment  so boarding school  felt like an unexpected  and unwanted incarceration; it could be  nightmarish at times, and it was always  extremely cold! Reading –  as is so often the case, I think,   was  a way of coping generally  and English  was more or less the only thing I was  reasonably good at . At ‘A level’  we studied  the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins  who, it turned out, had actually taught at the school in the  19th century,  and  we also studied The Waste Land  which seemed to resonate across the years. Something in my head said   ‘Holy shit, I think I like this!’
2. Who introduced you to poetry?
Our A level English Lit teacher was an irascible drunken left-wing Scotsman who was nevertheless on occasion  quite brilliant. He didn’t discourage drinking; in fact, he probably saw it as part of our wider education (an extra-curriculum activity), so we would trek across the damp hills looking for accommodating Public Houses.  In the 1970s no one seemed to bother that much about the legal dimension.  A barmaid would say ‘I suppose you’re going to say you’re eighteen?’ and we would say ‘Yes’ in the deepest voices  we could muster.  The beer flowed and in  our state of  inebriation  we would sometimes   talk about  poetry, and  even begin  to write it, in  our heads at least.  At the ages of sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, drinking and writing poetry  and  smoking hash were somehow inter-related and it felt better than most of the other things you were expected to do. The English teacher had a record of Eliot reading The Waste Land which, as it most  likely seemed the easiest option, he   would  play quite often, invariably nodding off before  we got to What the Thunder Said. We knew much of it off by heart. At University, in 1983,  I met Fleur Adcock , who came to give a reading and I realised in an instant that  poetry could be conversational,  colloquial and utterly contemporary. For me this was a real breakthrough!
3. How aware were you of the dominating presence of older poets?
In those days it  was still mostly all about older poets, but less so after meeting Fleur.  At University I read  a lot of medieval poets, including Chaucer, who were in turn  indebted to classical poets.   Later when I moved to Italy in the 1980s I learnt that every school child  could cite something  from Dante’s Divine Comedy. And I learnt that Liguria and Genoa, the city  which for a decade or so  became my home , had a rich literary history.   Which included the presence of Byron, Shelley, Dickens, Lawrence, Charles Tomlinson,  Hemingway, WB Yeats, Ezra Pound, Max Beerbohm, Basil Bunting , Camillo Sbarbaro, Eugenio Montale, Giorgio Caproni, Dino Campana. This year, much to my delight,  the Italian publishers Canneto has published my book Sottoripa (2018), which is  a bilingual  publication of my poems about Genoa, translated by Massimo Bacigalupo. http://www.cannetoeditore.it/libri/arte-e-grafica/sottoripa-poesie-genovesi-di-julian-stannard/ In 2013 the title poem had been  made into a short film by Guglielmo Trupia  which was nominated  at the Rain Dance Film Festival https://vimeo.com/82730928 But it was also in that period –  the 1980s – I got hold of a copy of Michael Hofmann’s Acrimony  –  an outstanding  collection by such a youthful poet  – Again  it  was a case of reading old and new voices  – and then finding  one’s own voice.
4. What is your daily writing routine?
I begin new poems with a mixture of hope and fear and excitement.  Because  I spend a lot of time teaching in  a university which also means  marking, and all that other bureaucratic stuff and then, when possible,  enjoying some recovery time,  I don’t always have a consistent writing routine but I take the opportunities when they arise  – on the train maybe, or weekends or during holiday  time. I spend a lot of time working on drafts or reading new poetry. I like listening to music, especially Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis,  Charlie Parker et al. This helps me write or re-write or just relax. When  my younger son was living  with me I would  listen to  a lot of  Rap – whether I wanted to or not – and when it comes to   the Notorious B.I.G , I have acquired a coating of  expertise! And  sometimes I send poems to friends to see what they think.
5. What motivates you to write?
A response of a kind.  The general weirdness of stuff I think – overheard conversations, things I‘ve read, billboards, train announcements (endless!), anger, desolation, joy, memories. I think we’re living in particularly challenging times; the political climate is worrying, more food banks, more homelessness, more poverty, fear of losing one’s job. The wider international situation too.  I have always been a loyal supporter of the Labour Party so that in itself brings  highs  and lows, rather like watching  your football team play brilliantly for much of the game yet somehow  throw it away  right at the end. Brexit fills me with immense sadness. 6. What is your work ethic? Teaching  often  consumes swathes of my life, it’s  draining , but because I also teach creative writing  I can, from time to time, get inspired by student  work which is wonderful too. It’s a delight to come across real talent and help nurture it.  I like to read  a lot of contemporary poetry and new fiction  generally. I am asked to review quite frequently which is a discipline in itself, a kind of homework, and a way of keeping up to date. Travelling often produces new poetry. Notwithstanding work pressures I manage to write a fair amount; and if a poem demands  to be written I  usually find the time to answer those demands! It’s a lot more enjoyable than writing some anodyne document or funding bid. 7. How do the writers you read when you were young influence you today? Their influence never really goes away, even if you spend a lot of time with newer or different  voices. I think  those ‘early’ poets helped fashion a way of thinking  about poetry  – and it’s  always a great pleasure to return to their  writing, whether it be those earlier generation such as the modernists  –  Eliot ,Pound, William Carlos Williams, DH Lawrence  – or  poets such as Frank O’Hara or Robert Creeley,  and/ or Lowell, Berryman  and co. Not to mention those older contemporary poets, especially if they are still producing new work: poets such as Fleur Adcock, Christopher  Reid, Hugo Williams, Maurice Riordan , Selima Hill, Michael Hofmann-  to name a few.
8. Who of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?
There are so many! There’ s a kind of resurgence in the world of  poetry I feel. I could roll out  a list off the top of my head but I am surely  leaving people  out; but the list would surely include Caroline Bird, George Szirtes, Kathryn Maris, Andrew Macmillan, Declan Ryan, Emily Berry, Tim Cumming,  André Naffis-Sahely,  Claudia Rankine, Sharon  Olds, Annie Freud, Ishion Hutchinson, Luke Kennard, Richard Skinner,  and some pieces  from  Bobby Parker  and Ocean Vuong too. I would also want  to acknowledge the dark genius  of Frederick Seidel, the intimations of mortality still coming from the pen of Clive James. And I take my hat off to my former student and colleague Antosh Wojcik who’s making   quite a name for himself as a performance poet. And why? Variously and varyingly  there is so much  energy  here, a lot of drive, and risk- taking,  and moments of candour (Lowell said ‘ why not say what happened’?)  and plenty of ludic mischief  too and experiment  with form;  in effect some lively conversations between poetry and prose, including  prose poetry, and other media too, including social media.  Some of the poets above work across genres: variously novelists, translators, essayists,  reviewers,  editors, teachers, events’ organisers  and  publishers . Difficult not to mention Charles Boyle, ex-poet, and now writer of prose under various names and the founder of CB Editions. The blogging of Katy Evans-Bush  –  fine poet – has been  significant and the gregarious Bethany Pope, poet and novelist, is now writing more or less daily reports from China.   I look forward to reading her next book.
9. Why do you write?
After forty years or so of doing it  –  oh  my God ! – it’s become a habit, a way of thinking and even a way of  living. Sometimes reportage, sometimes invention, I guess it’s a way of dealing  with some deep, not always unpleasant,  itch  – which in turn probably answers to  all  sorts of Freudian-like  neuroses… Writing, at times, is totally satisfying and, in a practical sense, quite easy to do. I don’t need a studio or a theatre or complicated props.  Just the page itself, I guess, which  is a kind of stage. 10. What would you say to someone who asked you “How do you become a writer?” I’d say Read, read and read yet more  and try thing out. Experiment, take risks, be thick-skinned,  and try and get  plenty of sleep!
11. Tell me about the writing projects you have on at the moment.
My last  English collection came out in 2016 –  What were  you thinking? (CB Editions http://www.cbeditions.com/stannard.html) ; so  I’m grappling  with the creation of a new MS – several pieces of which  have been published in  magazines. Any new collection  has , at least for me , a rather  aleatory dynamic –  feeling  my way forwards, as it  were, letting  poems butt their way in, or conversely slide away … I’m also writing a book called Transatlantic Conversations – which is about the relationships, harmonious or otherwise,  between British and American  poetry; this is for the publisher Peter Lang. As well as the above ,I’m  also working with  the novelist and artist Roma Tearne on a collaborative  project  called  Heat Wave  – It’s s a sort of dialogue between  poems of mine and Roma’s  fantastic  paintings . Not an ekphrastic venture I hasten to add. More a dark night of the soul with some gleeful moments too! A kind of synaesthetic fugue…. It’s coming out next year thanks to Green Bottle Press. We’re planning  several readings /events so watch this space!

Police Corruption In small town
I feel it’s the right time to shine some more light especially on a town of corruption. A town only someone who lived there nearly 20 years can verify as reality. I would like to start by saying that this is long overdue. A child molesting rapist who used my little sister as one of his victims faces no persecution. This man to my knowledge was arrested in a sting called “Operation Black Widow”. I thought finally, he’s going to prison. I kept hearing my dad was still hanging around this pedophile. For those that don’t know me well, this man was my dad’s best friend. This guy used to wait for my dad to go to work and stop by to masturbate and try and rouse my then 9 year old sister into sex. This went on until she was an adult and moved away. My dad had no idea, and either did I. Todd had a way of making you think he was “Mr wonderful”. I know now that it’s a manipulation tactic of the wicked. When my dad found out, he wanted to kill this man. Could you blame any father for having that feeling. I mean my sister was raped a few years before by a younger man, but it was still rape. I will never forget the blood stain on her pants. My dad looked at me and said “ I’m going to kill him”. I said “dad let me handle it”. I did exactly that. The person who committed the heinous act to my sister had to have reconstructive surgery on his face. I headbutted him twice. I ended up charged with simple assault. I spent time in jail, and was sentenced to indefinite probation. So the day my dad asked me to help him go kill Todd, I declined. I didn't believe it to begin with, and I saw what happened last time I took the law in my own hands. Also, I couldn’t fathom the thought this went on underneath my nose. I couldn’t imagine the shame or guilt my dad had.
I want everyone to know, to my knowledge neither was persecuted for rape or molestation. I, however was sentenced for two headbutts. Most dad’s or brother’s might have done worse than I did. I felt I made the point very clear as he begged for mercy. Now, why did I take the law into my hands you may ask? Well, this is a town of injustice. A police force more concerned about making teens and young adults lives miserable out of sheer boredom then actually protecting and serving. When my sister was a victim of an apparent rape they dropped her off at my mom’s and suggested my mom take her to the hospital “she may have been raped” they said. There was hardly any investigation into the rape, however the cops main concern was whether my sister had drank alcohol or not. Which brings me to my false imprisonment. I spent 5 days in jail while I waited for a bed to go to treatment for alcoholism. Sounds normal right? 5 days in jail without any charges accept a serious alcohol problem. I couldn't be held at the hospital where I would've been safe and under professional care. When I went through DT’s so bad from alcohol withdrawal there I got scared and ran away from the hospital in my underwear in the middle of winter. I was found in a shed nearly froze to death. You ask why did you run? I honestly cannot tell you why. I felt like I was hallucinating, but it felt very real. So real that I thought I was being held prisoner by evil people to be persecuted and killed.(There’s a story exactly the same just different content in the back of the Alcoholics Anonymous book). I was transported the next day to County Jail where I spent 5 days incarcerated before riding hand cuffed in a cop car 2 hours to treatment. I, someone with a history of seizures should not have been confined in jail. The then state’s attorney visited me in jail and apologized that they were holding me there. Any true professional would've admitted me to a psychiatric ward or just helped me through the DT’s I was experiencing. I feel like I was imprisoned unlawfully and plan to seek justice.
Then there was an incident where I was backing up a friend in a fight. Little did we know that we were bringing 4 fists to a knife and gun fight against numerous people. What a bunch of wussies. My friend and I were about 16 or 17 at the time so I can’t imagine we needed that much heat on us. Long story short I’m not even the least bit scared. I went after the guy with the knife. At the same time an officer pulls in and everyone flees to their vehicles. The cowards get in their two cars and peel out, and my friend and I attempt to leave the parking lot when we are stopped. We had both had around 3 or 4 beers. Our night was just starting. The cop pulls my friend to his car for questioning as I wait patiently in the car. Another officer pulls up at this point to bring me in his car. I explain what happened, and right on schedule the cops only concern was whether I had been drinking or not. I said kind of irrelevant when our lives were in danger sir. Well while all this is going on the driver (my friend) is getting put into the back seat. I’m thinking “Oh shoot” he’s getting a drinking and driving because I was already getting an underage drinking ticket. Well you will never guess what happens next. A nice new car pulls up. A lawyer gets out (just so happens to be my friends father). He speaks with the cop and just like nothing my friend is set free to his dad’s care. I, however, didn’t receive such an option. The cop took me across town to my mom’s where I promptly called my friend to see what happened. The officer was small talking with my mom when I put it on speaker phone. I said “ so you didn’t get a DUI or an underage?” his response “nope”. I walked at the officer asking why I was the only when being persecuted for underage drinking when I wasn’t even driving? He then drew his pistol and told me to “get back”!!! I said “officer I’m like 15 feet from you is the gun necessary”? He was calmed down by my mom and re holstered his weapon. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe my friend got off scotch free. His car wasn’t even towed. Recently in late January I called my former friend’s dad (the attorney) to help me with some legal stuff, and he of course declined. I brought up( on speaker phone for witnesses to hear) “do you remember when you came and got your son and somehow got him out of A DUI/ and or Underage drinking, and left me to get an underage. Your son drank as much if not more at that point, yet his car didn't even get towed”. He said “ yes I remember that night”, but I still can’t help you. At that point our conversation ended.
That brings me to one of the retired Sheriffs( hmm wonder why he’s retired). His son threatened my life, he even threatened to “slit my dog’s throat”. If you knew me well, I don’t think it was wise of him threaten my dog Baby. I at that point went to his house to confront the drug dealer face to face. When I drove past (his father the sheriff) waved for me to come into the alley. As I approached I saw the coward who threatened me and my dog standing behind their fence with a hockey stick. His dad (the Sheriff) had we walk towards him. He then said “come here you little shit I heard you think your tough”. I said I hear the same thing, but my concern is your son is threatening to kill my dog and myself. He grabbed my coat and started to try and drag me into his garage to “talk”. I declined and swiped his arm away from mine and was prepared to fight. I then realized I was up against a deadly weapon and a town Sheriff. It was most definitely a lose, lose situation. I decided to retreat to my car helpless with even the law. This Sheriff knew of his sons cocaine and marijuana dealing. He would allow his son to rip people off and show up in his Sheriff car to make sure his son was unscathed. Wow, great police work. Obviously for me to know all this I wasn’t perfect. I’m not claiming to be, but my job description wasn’t protect and serve.
I have so many other stories of this corrupt town. You would not believe the truth I’m going to bring to light. All the persecution I endured will not be for nothing. There are others now suffering the same abuse by the hands of those who are supposed to “PROTECT AND SERVE”. I want to be clear not all the officers are corrupt, nor do I have any proof of that. I want it known that this town that ran me out (thank GOD) is disgusting. As far as I know Todd(my dad’s pedophile best friend) isn’t on the pedophile registry, and to my knoledge has done about the same amount as me. LOL I’m attaching a video I found on YouTube. It exemplifies and proves what I’m saying is not false. I will go under oath if I have to. I will subpoena any and all witnesses because best believe I remember all their names and faces(even the officers). I want to remind you this is a small town in South Dakota with a police force and prosecution that ignores real crime like rape to persecute underage drinkers or pot smokers. To my knowledge because of their great work the city was able to build a new jail to house all the new inmates. I’m ashamed to call this place my hometown. In one of the last scenes they are in the ice arena where I helped put a banner up for a state championship. Instead of having year round ice for kids and hockey players to excel and compete at higher levels, the police force uses the building for special ops training. You heard me correctly. A town of 20,000 people with their own swat team. They’ve had like two homicides since like 1900. I wonder where the funding comes from? HMM
Thanks for reading! PLEASE SHARE//// Here is the link to see these officers gearing up for war in a town where I never used to lock my car door! Content not suitable for children. Watch at your own risk.
