Lineage Challenge - Day 3 (Herrity Family)
Tumblr media
[Link to Playlist]
Here we are! A playlist that culminates in some of the old Irish folk songs sung by members of the Herrity family, as well as just vibes. There is also of course some overlap with Deaglán's own personal playlist, but for the lineage one I tried to target songs that can feature elements of the various generations. Also note that it's not organized in a particular order, so feel free to shuffle to your heart's content.
Much of the playlist is influenced by folk music — and also just Irish musicians in general — as it is a big part of the identity of the Herrity family. That aside, there are some conflicting elements in the playlist as well, pertaining to the overall essence of stillness and unobtrusiveness that govern much of the line's existence. Of course, for the moments where there are certain souls that venture out beyond the confines of the family's values, things have not always turn out very well.
Some standouts:
The Bold Fenian Men - OMNIA | Although the song itself was not written as an Irish rebel song until the 1910s, it speaks of previous Irish nationalist generations taking up arms in the 1800s. With the Herritys not only descending from Fionn mac Cumhaill who headed up the Fianna Eireann (of which the Fenians derive), but also having a branch of the family that split off into nationalism, this song was included as reference to these extended members of the family, although dead.
This is the Sea - The Waterboys | A song about relinquishing past tethers and letting go, and the internal struggle that it brings. It seemed quite fitting particularly for Deaglán and his siblings especially as the former ventures out into the world and strays far from his family ideals before returning home in his old age.
The Killer Was a Coward - Dermot Kennedy | A song that connects to one of the older members of the Herrity family tree, Feildhlim Herrity, who lost all of his brothers and sisters during the Williamite War (aka, The War of Two Kings), and for whom after getting revenge instilled the practice in the family of not getting involved in outside affairs, muggle or otherwise.

9:30 INTERVIEW: Amen Dunes
If you checked out any musical "Best of 2018" lists last month, chances are you came across Amen Dunes’ Freedom more than a few times. We chatted with Damon McMahon, the man behind the moniker, about the album and his current tour ahead of his 9:30 Club debut next week.
In an interview with Stereogum, you described feeling “very alone” in your songwriting process. Does performing and touring Freedom feel validating despite the somewhat lonely writing process?
It's an aloneness rather than a loneliness, as in solitary. When I tour and perform I always feel that aloneness when I play. That’s what makes me connect to the music and have a good performance.
You talk about New York a fair bit on Freedom. Was it a conscious choice to have the city play such a big part in the songs, or did living there just naturally inform the music?
My family’s from NYC and I grew up outside of/in the city, so in reflecting on childhood it was inevitable.
You’re doing a U.S. tour this month, including a stop at 9:30 Club, in support of the album. Considering Freedom was your first release since 2014, were you nervous to perform the new songs live?
Yeah, I suppose the first few shows I was, but I got used to it again real quick.
You’ve said in a few interviews that when writing lyrics, you make an effort to make the words match the sounds phonetically, and that it isn’t necessary that the words make complete and total sense. What attracted you to this style of writing?
I wasn’t attracted to it, instead it’s just how my music always came out of me, so I attended to it accordingly.
youtube
It’s been almost nine years since you released your first Amen Dunes project, and nearly five years since Love. What has inspired your newer sound, and how has it developed since the start?
I always want to try new sounds, so I guess I burnt out on the sound of Love or was ready to move on.
It was inspired by songwriters who were simultaneously complex and accessible. Over the years the sound has become more and more rhythmic, and I’ve been able to afford better engineering of the sounds.
Freedom has been noted as your most personal album to date. What influenced this project most, and what does it mean to you?
They’re all equally personal, this is the most open of them all. Couldn’t say what influenced it most but I’d say a couple things like mortality, childhood, Oasis, Aphex Twin, and Tom Petty.
Traveling state to state to share your music is an enormous act of expression. Wherever you go, what helps you stay true to yourself, and maintain the momentum that is required to accomplish this sort of mass communication?
I have to be making music to please myself. If I ever start to do it for you, he, she, them, I lose the plot and the connection.
-Carlos Lopez, Lissa Ogden, and Matt Herrity
Amen Dunes plays 9:30 Club on January 31, 2019. Tickets available here.

Pink Kong Studios Debut VR Animation Aurora at the Audi Dublin International Film Festival
This time of year features a plethora of immersive film premiere’s thanks to festivals like Sundance, Tribeca and SXSW. While those are all in the US, there are plenty of other films festivals featuring 360-degree and virtual reality (VR) content. Last month was the Audi Dublin International Film Festival and as part of its Immersive Stories Conference, Irish creative  Pink Kong Studios debuted its first animated VR short Aurora to the public.
Aurora immerses the viewer in powerful visuals and sounds of nature. The emotive storyline offers a captivating experience, inviting viewers to reflect on the nature of time itself.
Directed by Aoife Doyle and produced by Niamh Herrity alongside writer Denis James Ryan, the team were awarded a bursary of €30k EUR by ADIFF, Screen Training Ireland & Audi Ireland to produce Aurora. Director Aoífe Doyle explains: “Emerging technologies have always been on our agenda since myself and Niamh founded the studio in 2014. Aurora has afforded us the opportunity to realise a goal of creating a storytelling piece in VR. It’s amazing that you can don a headset and be transported to another world. That’s the great thing about immersive storytelling!
“We hope AURORA gives the audience a space to experience and reflect on the passing of time. Time can be profound and precious, and we really wanted the audience to take a moment and appreciate that. The story follows the lives of a young family and all who inhabit the films vividly coloured landscape. We really wanted to create an emotional and immersive experience. As we watch the seasons change Nature herself becomes a central character in the piece”, continues Doyle.
Created in just four months, Aurora stayed true to Pink Kong Studios 2D sensibilities,  with the virtual environment incorporating both 2D and 3D elements. The film premiered as a room scale experience utilising HTC Vive allowing certain elements of the film to be interactive.
“If you’re patient and still, you can enjoy the beauty of a fawn and its mother grazing a few feet from you but move too quickly towards them and you have the ability to spook them…just as you would in real life. The desire to implement these additional experiences for the audience within such a tight schedule led us to bring Peter Craddock and the team at Manchester based Studio Liddell onboard the project. We worked closely together to stay true to the vision of Aurora and I’m really proud of what the whole team achieved in such a short turn around,” Doyle adds.
Aurora will be taken to several more festivals and VR events around the world. Currently there’s been no mention of a wider home release. You can see the trailer here, and for any further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Lineage Challenge - Day 4 (Herrity Family)
Tumblr media
Dubheasa Joanne Herrity
Uncontrollable, untamable, unruly. In spite of being the oldest, Dubheasa was only responsible when it came to looking after her younger siblings, but otherwise would throw all manners of caution to the wind. Vulgar, candid, and a little too reminiscent of her mother for her grandfather's tastes, she was the wildcard, yet arguably the most publicly "successful" of the late Victorian era Herritys. She was sorted into Ravenclaw House during her time at Hogwarts and had the honor of becoming Head Girl in her last year.
Tumblr media
There was something about the portrait of Dubheasa hanging in their grandfather's house that always made him a little bit sad. It wasn't more than a few years after their parents had passed that Lachlan Herrity had commissioned portraits of all of his grandchildren, but the eldest girl's was certainly the most somber of the bunch. It was, Deaglán had to admit, somberly accurate as the last time that he saw Dubheasa ever truly joyful was when they were still young and wild (and free) in Limerick. The weight of responsibility suited her ill in spite of her ability to carry it with determination. Yet still, the corners of her mouth were always downturned and her lips pursed in a perpetual way as if she was stuck in a conversation with a world that did nothing but displease her. She was often harder on Deaglán than she was on the others —an element that in his teens put a bit of a strain on their relationship— and seemed to wish to mould him for a role of which she did not consider herself suitable, nor want to be constrained to. She later apologized, but Deaglán knew she wouldn’t have done things any differently if given the chance. The value of her own personal freedom was too high to relinquish, as was his.
Closest to the youngest of her siblings, she often felt very protective of Poppy and continued to look after her best interests in life when guardianship later fell upon herself after Lachlan’s eventual passing. With little mind paid to the estate that would pass over her in the line of inheritance, she expressed herself primarily through politics, making her way up to becoming the head of the Department of International Magical Co-operation in her later adult years while advocating extensively for the suffragette movement (often dragging Deaglán and Poppy along with her) in addition to expressing a desire for a sovereign Ireland. She championed the registration of a more successful and globally-connected Floo network during her time and eventually retired to the family’s former home in Limerick where she took a more casual approach to voicing her opinions and took up playing music once again as she did in her youth. Every now and then when Deaglán would stop by amidst his travels, he opted to play music along with her and it was at those times, in spite of all that they had both accomplished and the turbulence of their relationship, that the displeasure in her features seemed to momentarily lift.

Lineage Challenge - Day 1 (Herrity Family)
Tumblr media
Herrity Family Coat of Arms
𝔣𝔦𝔡𝔢𝔰 𝔣𝔞𝔪𝔦𝔩𝔦𝔞 𝔰𝔬𝔩𝔲𝔪 — trust in family alone
The Herrity family crest came into record around the mid 17th Century with the coat of arms shifting slightly amid the Williamite War in Ireland.
The Crane crest atop the mantling is symbolic of vigilance, justice, and longevity, while the presence of the bird marks peace of home and family. In addition to its more primary significance, the presence of a crane plays a part in the legend of Fionn mac Cumhaill from Irish Mythology, a seer with a thumb of magical knowledge. Speculated to have been a student at Hogwarts and potentially one of the original ancestors of the Herrity family, the crane heading up the coat of arms counts doubly as a gentle nod to the presumed ancestral line, in addition to its Fenian members now since deceased. The Herrity line has had several seers within its tree but the ability seems to have suspiciously vanished from the line with the extinction of the Irish cranes.
The Annulet to the right of the coat is symbolic of continuity, wholeness, and protection, stressing the importance of maintaining the family along with the Chevron pattern gracing the back of the shield in aqua, evergreen, and crimson. The Lozenge to the left of the coat is a symbol of honesty and constancy and it is also a token of noble birth.
Lastly, the Nail is borne through the coat as a reminder of poignant suffering that the first bearer of the arms, Feildhlim Herrity, underwent; added after losing many of his brothers and sisters amid the Williamite War. The crimson chevron too is symbolic of the disastrous passing while the matching thread acts as a warning to hold the family close. With the reclusive and solitary nature of the Herrity lineage who keep to themselves in the wake of tragic events, a great deal of emphasis is placed on sustaining the familial unit, as is reflected in the coat of arms.
Well, it's not quite how I envisioned it but the general idea is there! Did I also take some historical liberties for the sake of plot? Yes... Sue me.

Lineage Challenge - Day 2 (Herrity Family)
Tumblr media
The main snippet of the Herrity Family Tree, inspired by @gaygryffindorgal 's family tree image for the Goldcrests
Here it is, a (still somewhat incomplete) family tree for the Herrity family, but the bulk of it (aka, the "important people") are present and accounted for.
If there's one thing that the Herrity House is terrible at, it's keeping records of their own people. After all, when you're as reclusive a bunch as they are, sometimes it can be hard to truly trace things back to people who simply want to be left alone. Meddling in another's affairs has rarely ended well for a single member of the Herrity line, but through intentional communication and keeping things within the familial unit (and in the early days, mostly between Purebloods), later records of the families members were written down by way of gathering information through word of mouth. The last seer in the family line, Doireann Herrity, used her gifts in the realm of divination to fill some of the gaps and transcribe what she could, though much after the original bearer of the Coat of Arms remains inconclusive beyond what is believed to be their original ancestor, Fionn mac Cumhaill.

Lineage Challenge - Day 6 (Herrity Family)
Thank you for a lovely time, @kathrynalicemc ! That's Day 6 of the Lineage Challenge complete :) Although I only had the mental energy for 5/6, I dare say that it's not too bad for my first go around!
Day 6 - Ask Game
Canon or Fiction? If your family is a Canon one you made your own: What drew you to that specific family? Did you make any changes to Canon, and if so, why? If your family is completely original: Where did the Family name come from? What was your inspiration and who was the first OC you created for it?
The Herrity family is completely fictional! The name simply came about from being pulled from my head, though it was admittedly a toss-up between Kearney and Herrity. The latter won out due to its meaning being more in line with what I was hoping for the family. Specifically, "Member of an Assembly."
The starting point in my mind for the family was actually Deaglán's grandfather, Lachlan Herrity, though the rest of the grandkids were quick to follow (I backfilled the parents afterward).
A big part of my inspiration for Deaglán's association with travel and photographic journalism actually came from Diane Arbus — the process of going around, taking photographs of both the muggle and magical world that showed a wide array of people, places, and things.
2. Family Ties: What other families are related/connected to this one? Are they Canon families or creator made families? (Tag them!)
No canon or created families at the moment, but that doesn't mean never! I'm always happy to make connections so feel free to reach out if you'd like to discuss something.
3. Foundations: What year and which OC was the founder of the family line? If the family goes back hundreds of years and you don’t know the first member, tell us about the oldest OC in the family you have created.
Feildhlim Herrity is considered to be the "founder" of the family line, tracing back to the late 1600's. He is recognized partially as the originating member due to the drastic circumstances that created a new family coat of arms and instilled the generational values of the Herrity family. After losing all of his brothers and sisters in the Williamite War (aka, The War of Two Kings), he retreated into a solitary life after enacting an unfulfilling revenge and furthermore discouraged stepping outside of the family from any subsequent members of the family line. In spite of his status though,, Fionn mac Cumhaill is considered to be the oldest ancestor, albeit not an OC.
4. Fun Facts: Do you have any misc lore you have that you haven’t had a chance to post about? Talk about anything you like!
Not presently that I can think of, but I'd be happy to divulge anything specific for #5 below.
5. Free Space: Feel free to ask any creator a question not listed here and maybe you will get one in return!
Ask away!

࿐ Background ࿐
Hometown:
Deaglán grew up in Limerick for most of his childhood and spent a great deal of time within the company of his family, less so among their magical neighbors. At the age of eight, Deaglán and his siblings moved into their grandfather’s home in a neat little town they call Belfast — or rather, the countryside along the outskirts of the city, away from all of the riots and turmoil within the muggle community and the politics of the wizarding one.
࿐ Family ࿐
Mother: Genevieve Purísima Herrity neé Boera
Tumblr media
Born in Girona to a pro Quidditch player and a muggle lawyer, Genevieve spent her early years flip-flopping between a life of magic and a life of muggle-hood. A gifted singer with a mind too strong for those around her, she did not fare well with her peers at Beauxbatons and decided to switch to her mother’s alma mater, Hogwarts, in her second year and her parents resituated in Edinburgh.
Hogwarts turned out to be close, but not entirely what she wanted either, so in her fifth year she transferred out to the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts to finish her schooling. During that time, she continued sending letters to her friend-turned-sweetheart, Rowan Herrity, who seemed intent on pursuing her in spite of their new disconnect.
After graduation, she married Rowan, and opted to more casually pursue a career in singing while simultaneously trying to convince her husband to pull a little farther away from his familial obligations, not interested in the slightest in being the Lady of Mulstone Manor. Such a perspective drove a bit of a wedge between her and her father-in-law, Lachlan Herrity, but Rowan nevertheless agreed to, at the very least, beginning their life together separate from the life of his father and the estate. Unfortunately, their time was cut short when she was bitten by a venomous tentacula when Deaglán was eight. Rowan did his best to save her from the predicament but ultimately fell victim to the same fate as well.
Father: Rowan Marcus Herrity
Tumblr media
The only son and heir apparent to a more reclusive pure-blooded family, Rowan first took interest in plants as he watched the raspberry bushes grow around the property of Mulstone Manor and observed some of the more magical plants in the greenhouses. When at Hogwarts, he was sorted into Ravenclaw and swiftly allied himself with fierce and like-minded students, including Genevieve Boera in second year, a newly immigrated Slytherin who he took a liking to. While upset when she chose to leave for the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts for her last two years of schooling, he did not stop in his efforts to remain in contact with her and maintain their relationship. He was quick to propose to her after graduating from Hogwarts in spite of complaints from his father, who thought Genevieve was more encouraging of poor decisions and was steering Rowan away from the family and into a life more fitting for a muggle.
An avid herbologist, Rowan devoted his life to the study of dangerous plants, both magical and otherwise. After leaving home, he built up a life with Genevieve by his side, and five kids (each with a few years between them). No more than a year after the youngest child was born, Rowan died trying to save Genevieve from a venomous tentacula, leaving Deaglán and his siblings to go live with their grandfather. While the inheritance was secured, Rowan had written it in his will that the children would not receive it until one of them married or the youngest came of age — a notion that Deaglán always a thought had to deal less with his siblings and more with the frustration toward his grandfather.
Grandfather: Lachlan Cathal Herrity
Tumblr media
Born and raised in Belfast and having spent most of his life within the confines of Mulstone Manor, Lachlan lived a comfortable albeit reclusive life that only became more so after the death of his wife, the late Lady Venetia. Caretaker of the estate and guardian to Deaglán and his siblings, Lachlan sought to mend the bridges that he burned with Deaglán’s father after he had left home and hopefully find a new heir for the estate. He was a stern man with a rough voice whose thousand-mile eyes and tone were the only betrayers of his caustic and severe manner, offering a softer look into the depths of his dilapidated spirit from years of solitude.
He tried to do well by his grandchildren even if he was terrible at showing it, and while in control of their money and future for the time until they came of age or married, he intended to do everything he could to secure the future of not only his family but his home.
Elder Sister: Dubheasa Joanne Herrity
Tumblr media
Uncontrollable, untamable, unruly. In spite of being the oldest, Dubheasa was only responsible when it came to looking after her younger siblings, but otherwise would throw all manners of caution and, well, manners to the wind. Vulgar, candid, and a little too reminiscent of her mother for Lachlan’s tastes, she is the wildcard of the Herritys.
Younger Sister: Margaery “Maggie” Anne Herrity
Tumblr media
While Lachlan favors Maggie for being the most well-behaved of the bunch, Deaglán always enjoyed her company for the fact that she seemed to have an unrelenting imagination capable of dreaming up the most wild ideas.
Younger Brother: Cillian Tadhg Herrity
Tumblr media
Cillian enjoys the life of leisure the most out of all of the Herrity children, and would likely be the happiest taking over the estate if he wasn’t one of the furthest down the line and terrible at management to boot. While he could never intentionally hurt a soul, making tough decisions was not a line that he could pick up.
Youngest Sister: Patricia “Poppy” Herrity
Tumblr media
The family “baby,” Poppy is prone to mimicking Dubheasa in her behaviors, but in Deaglán’s eyes is all the more charming for it. She’s slightly temperamental, especially when things don’t go by “the rules” (or whatever her definition of those rules may be), but she’s just as quick to placate situations as she is to instigate them.

Personality & Attitude: Deaglán moves through life with a relaxed sense of humor, constantly teetering between the practical and the dreamy and somehow striking a harmonious balance for both. Although it may seem to some that he is always looking upward to the neglect of what’s right in front of him, he does not intend to lose his footing by any measure. He has a strong sense of familial obligation and cares deeply for those that show him kindness in return. He is, admittedly, one of the softer Slytherins of his bunch, but he merely does not see his own ambitions in conflict with others and would rather help everyone to raise up their own simultaneously rather than tear them down to get ahead.
Priorities: His family, his life goal(s)
Strengths: Compassionate, diligent, intuitive, creative, sociable, gracious, easy-going
Weaknesses: Defensive, reticent about his problems unless asked directly, can be passive-aggressive, and occasionally melancholy once goals are realized (”What’s next?”)
Stressed: When things remain stagnant for too long; when things don’t get completed; when being hounded by his grandfather; when making little decisions; when around magical plants
Calm/Comforted: Reading to Poppy; being near the ocean; picking raspberries; journaling (i.e., unburdening his mind)
Favorites: Exploring new places, jam and scones, sitting by a fire during a thunderstorm, craftwork
Colors: Earth / warm tones (sage, brown, clay, etc.)
Weather: Misty and foggy
Hobbies: Playing the tenor banjo, looking at star charts, keeping up with current events (muggle and wizard), traveling
࿐ Relationships ࿐
Friend(s):
Antonio Rosier @hufflefluffs -  Deaglán met Antonio while traveling abroad to France, inquiring into the possibility of interviewing him for a piece on wizard singers of the world. After connecting over music, his Spanish heritage, and this and that, the two became friends and stayed in contact. Bradford Pendleton @kc-and-co -  Deaglán spent much time commiserating with Brady over their shared disdain for the Care of Magical Creatures course at Hogwarts. Every now and then, Brady has even offered to slip him some answers to questions on his homework. Vinny Raymond @hogwartsmysteryho - Deaglán met Vinny after accepting to tutor the younger student in History of Magic and the two have been good friends ever since. Aileen Ua Breathnach @captainhowlreportingforduty -  Deaglán initially met Aileen at a dinner party when they were kids and eventually ended up becoming friends after all of the events henceforth that they would run into each other at.
