Thinking about when Stede says “I know he wouldn’t have left by choice. He was either gonna watch the world burn or die trying. So which was it?” Obviously there’s been many people pointing out that he’s showing he really does GET Ed but the thing that stood out to me is that Stede is setting up the fact that the only way this would have stopped, the only way Ed wouldn’t have continued his list of crimes and dramatic upsets was if he was dead. If the first is true, he really does understand Ed then, the second is also true, he already subconsciously knows Ed is dead.
Which makes Stede’s decision to confront/negotiate with Zheng before the confirmation of mutiny even more impactful. He knows, he’s not stupid but he allows himself to believe Izzy because it’s easier. Then after being told “they killed him” and knowing he’s been lied to about it he still saves them and he does it with a smile on his face, being playful and never once actually confronting the crew for retaliating against Ed.
Yeah he knows Ed was troubled, he recognizes he hurt Ed pretty bad but the fact is he’s extremely capable and emotionally intelligent while still having genuine flaws and humanity.

Izzy and Ricky both having lost something of themselves, Izzy's leg, Ricky's nose. Both believing it's Ed and Stede's doing. Izzy being a veteran pirate legend who's going through an identity crisis and Ricky being a frustrated, upper class lover of pirate fantasy tales and wanting to live a different kind of life.
So...they're either gonna kill each other or fuck nasty, which one?

Look it’s a devastating moment (even if you didn’t/don’t love Izzy like I do because if watching Ed truly sob doesn’t tear your heart out idk what to tell you) but when everyone takes their hats off after Izzy’s death Fang also removing his headband is objectively funny because the idea of him holding it in front of his chest like an actual hat is hilarious
Fang is my gooey gumdrop and I love him so dearly every time I’m crying over this scene I look at this teddy bear of a man and while I know he’s hurting I can’t help but laugh

The new unicorn...
Izzy Hands' character arc is really highlighted during his conversation with Prince Ricky. "Letting go of ego for something larger... the crew." S1 Izzy Hands would have never made this connection let alone say it out loud to an enemy. He would have seen it as a revealing a weakness. To me his conversation with Prince Ricky paid more respect to his upcoming death than his final words to Ed simply because it highlighted the crew. "It's about finding the family to kill for when yours are long dead." I think that for a long time Ed was the only one he felt that way about and it was beautiful to hear directly from Izzy just how much he came to love and appreciate the crew.
