#the one thing lloyd wants is to have an easy relaxed life surrounded by the people he loves
if i think too long about the ending making lloyd leave the home he worked so hard to save behind along with the new found family he sacrificed his life for so he can move to a place he has no emotional connection to where he only knows two people (one of which is actually following him from the aforementioned home) in order to make him get a standard "have a wife and children" 'happy' ending i start wanting to bite people not gonna lie

Random Drabble : Spinjitzu
Random oneshot including my FC, Mei-Lin! I’ve deliberately left things out about her as I am eventually going to write a story for her, and putting those things here would just spoil it.
I hope you enjoy the oneshot :)
On occasions, Lloyd would go off and wander around Ninjago city's central park. During the night time was usually when he'd be found there, or rather wouldn't, as most people would be either be asleep or inside. Some nights the boy wouldn't be able to sleep, being kept up with his thoughts and memories. Despite him and his father having now formed a new bond, that didn't change the past, it didn't change who he was or who his father was. His dad was still an evil warlord and he was still the green ninja. One destroyed, the other protected.
The attacks Garmadon made were less frequent now, only usually coming over to Ninjago to spend time with his son. He wanted to make up for the time he had missed due to the circumstances. As much as Lloyd was happy to finally spend time with his dad, as all he wanted was for his dad to pay attention to him, he couldn't help but be reminded of the time before then. The time where his father ignored his existence, didn't care about him. When he was hated by everybody simply because of the name he had. All the bullying and the torment, all the pain and loneliness. It all still felt so real in his head, even though it wasn't even really the case anymore. He'd never forgotten every whisper, every taunt, every insult scribbled on his locker. They were all permanent in his head.
When those nights came by he wouldn't sleep. He couldn't. So he'd simply leave those things behind in his room and go someplace else. That place was the park. He liked the park. It was calm, it was quiet, he could be left alone. It was the perfect place for him to be when he felt down. That night was no different.
He'd snuck out of his house, taking the five-minute tram ride from his house to the park and jumping off just outside the park entrance. The metal gate stood tall, a message written on the archway saying "park" for all those who wouldn't know. Who wouldn't know it's a park though? No one had seen him walk along the pathway, letting his surroundings be engulfed with trees and bushes and flowers. He walked along for a few minutes until he came across a specific tree, one with a small engravement in the bark. The mark was a very rough and un-even circle (or more rectangle), having been cut with a penknife. Upon approaching said tree he left the gravel pathway behind, walking along the grass and heading deeper into the trees. It was a lot darker off the path, the tree branches and their leaves only allowing minimal light through to the ground to illuminate it's own spotty, make-shift course. He used it as his guide, seeing as he wasn't able to see much else. Pretty soon he came to his little secret area. His sanctuary, if you will.
It was a small gap in the trees, a circle where the land indented a bit, and a pond sat on the other side of the circle. There was a tree looming over the pond, watching over it. The leaves hung down and were basically a shield so he could remain hidden in the dark, or if it rained and he needed shelter. There were a few flower patches dotted here and there. They were all small and dainty, easy to trod on if he wasn't careful.
With a sigh he relaxed his muscles and slowly looked around at his oasis, a smile spreading on his face as his mind blanked completely. The moon and stars shone down on him from the night sky above as he took in this environment. It was so different to the city. It was slow, and peaceful, and tidy too. He loved this place so much. He was so happy he'd found it.
He sat himself down by the pond, looking at the reflection in the water. His golden locks tumbled over one side of his face, hiding one of his emerald green eyes from sight. He just sat and stared at the water for a while, occasionally dipping his hand in and feeling the cold water pool around his fingertips. The water tickled his skin in an odd way, but it wasn't bad.
He took his hand out of the water, placing it down on the grass next to him. He released a deep breath and closed his eyes. He didn't allow his mind to wander, he kept everything silent. He listened to the air, and took in the sounds of the leaves rustling around him. He felt the grass brushing against the palms of his hands and suddenly that feeling was there. That weird feeling he couldn't quite explain. It started at his hand and traveled up through his body, coursing through all of him and spreading to his heart. This feeling was calm, yet brimming with energy. He could feel it wrapping around him, entrancing him and making him feel safe. Hopeful, even. It was a nice feeling, a wonderful one.
He slowly stood up, releasing the grass in his hands and raising them to his chest. A few moments later he began, slow and steady. He built up his movements, not rushing through them. He twisted his body and glided his hands through the air carefully, remembering the steps of Spinjitzu that his uncle had taught him and his friends over and over. He gradually began to pick up the pace as he let go of it all, ignored the world's outer shell and absorbing what was flowing through its inner shell instead. The very core of the earth was flowing through him and it felt like he was being given the biggest hug he'd ever received (well, next to Kai's). He felt safe, he felt happy, he felt free. He also felt a slightly stronger source of energy coming from behind him. He smiled to himself, halting with his motions with his hands out in front of him.
"I know you're there Mei." He heard her jump down from a tree branch, crunching the grass beneath her as she landed.
"Guess I wasn't quiet enough." She seemed chirpy as she approached him.
"I thought you were asleep." The boy turned to face his friend, seeing that she was still in her pajamas, but had shoved on her favourite purple hoodie to keep warm.
"Nope." The light brown haired teenager shook her head. "I was wide awake."
"Is that why you followed me? You couldn't sleep?" Again, she shook her head.
Nah, I just..." The girl shrugged. "You seemed sad. And I was also kinda curious to see where you were going at—" She pulled out her phone, the screen illuminating her freckled skin as she checked the time. "—2AM."
Lloyd nodded and shrugged as she looked up at him, putting her phone back in her pocket. That was fair enough. Why would Lloyd need to be out at two in the morning? Why would he want to be out at that time?
"I just needed to get away for a bit, ya' know?" Mei-Lin placed her hands behind her back and looked to the side.
"Yeah, I know." Her eyes seemed to glaze over as memories clouded her vision. Lloyd knew what she was thinking of and he couldn't help but frown. She didn't like talking about her past. Lloyd knew simply because she'd told him. She only really seemed to trust him. No one else. Not even Master Wu, who knew about it anyway (that dude knew everything, it was nuts).
The girl lifted her head up, a sigh leaving her lips and her pupils coming back into focus. She began taking everything in, slowly twisting her body around as she took the chance to look at the place. "Nice secret you've got here, come here a lot?"
"Eh," The blonde put his hand out and shook it a little. "Kinda. I mean, I used to come here a lot but...life's been good at the moment."
"True. It's definitely a lot better." The freckled-faced girl finished her 360-degree spin and was now grinning at her friend. He smiled back, finding it contagious. "So. What do ya' get up to when you're here?"
"It's kinda hard to explain..." Lloyd scratched the back of his head and turned away, now facing the water in the pond that was in front of him. His reflection stood alone momentarily before another came into view beside him. She waited expectantly, not forcing him to answer but still wanting him to. The boy blew the fringe out of his eyes, not that it worked, and tried his best to put the feeling into words.
"Okay, so..." He sighed. "Ya' know how I'm the Green Ninja, the ninja of life?" She blinked and nodded her head. Crossing her arms she sat down on the floor, Lloyd joining her. His hands reached for the water again, his fingers causing a ripple as they were dragged along the surface. Mei watched him mess around with a curious expression before sticking her hand in too. She drew back a little upon realizing how cold the water actually was, making her friend chuckle and smirk.
"And, you know I have no elemental powers?"
"Yeah?" Her tone was one of slight confusion, wondering why these linked to anything he was about to say.
"Well...Even though I don't have powers I can still like...feel life." The brunette looked at him, an arched eyebrow and eyes half shut as she tried to understand what he meant.
"Feel life?" She said in puzzlement.
"Yeah. Like..." The boy stood up off the ground and looked up at the sky. "I can feel life flowing through me." Mei-Lin didn't look like she understood fully what he meant. Not as in she didn't get what he was saying, more how it were possible to feel life. He wasn't too sure how either, but all he knew was that he could feel the energy of everything. If he focused hard enough, that is.
"I don't really know how else to put it." Mei-Lin shrugged.
"That's okay. I think I get what you mean." She stood up and looked up at the sky with him. "But, why do the Spinjitzu? Does it enhance it?"
"Yeah. And it's actually kinda relaxing to do." He glanced to the side to peer at Mei-Lin. She was staring upward still, watching the stars. She had hummed in response, not taking her eyes away from the scene above her. She was lost in her own thoughts again, Lloyd wasn't sure why though. Had he said something? He didn't think so. Maybe it was the night sky? Another past memory of hers? One he didn't know? He wouldn't be surprised if she had kept something from him, as she wasn't the most open person. Sure, she'd talked to him about things that bothered her, but he could tell when there were things she wanted to keep to herself. This could be one of these times. Or perhaps he was just over thinking things.
"I don't know Spinjitzu yet." She'd blurted out randomly, making the boy jump a little.
"You don't?"
"No. Wu says I will learn in time, but..." Her voice trailed off as she sighed. "He says that about a lot of things." The blonde boy chuckled.
"Yeah, my uncle has a tendency to be cryptic. But trust me, he knows what he's doing, just means you gotta be patient."
"I'm not saying I'm impatient, I can wait, it's just hard not to wonder sometimes." The girl let her head tilt down to the ground as she shook her head and sighed yet again. "Sorry, does that make sense?"
"It does, don't worry." The conversation stops for a while, both of them having sat back down to lie on the grass and continue looking upward, forgetting their worries. It gave Lloyd a chance to think to himself as Mei hummed a little tune. He probably shouldn't do it, Wu might get mad at him if he found out. He was waiting for the right time, Mei-Lin had told him this. But as far as he was aware she was more than ready to know. She had no elemental like him...at least they weren't aware of any elemental she may have. Wu hadn't said anything about it but it could very well be true. But...if he taught her Spinjtizu then Wu would only have himself to blame for not saying anything to them about her possible elemental powers, yes?
"Hey." His friend stopped humming and turned her face to look at his. "Get up." Lloyd grinned at her as he got up on his feet, his hands on his hips as he looked down at her. She didn't respond at first, not until the boy held out a hand to her and pulled her up off of her back and onto her feet.
"Okay," He took a hold of her arms and positioned them in front of her. "I'm gonna do this slowly so follow my lead. Tell me if you get lost." He stood in front of her, the same position she was in. He took a deep breath before slowly reciting the steps out loud as he did them. Mei-Lin only stood at the beginning, until she realized what it was Lloyd was doing and her face lit up. She watched his movements carefully and tried to copy them as best she could. She got stuck at a few points as she struggled to remember the order in which to do things, but soon she had the hang of it and Lloyd tried to let her do it on her own. He kept his eye out for any missteps or incorrect hand gestures, at the same time telling her when she was doing good so she didn't wonder.
"This feels really weird to do." She'd laughed as she kept her pace up.
"Yeah it will do, but you'll get used to it. Besides at least the others aren't here watching, right? I had to do it in front of everyone."
"It's not the doing it in front of people that bugs me, it's more just that it feels so odd. It looks like I'm just flailing my arms around." Lloyd snorted and smirked as he crossed his arms.
"We can stop if you want-"
"No!" She cried out, momentarily faltering. "No, let's keep going." The green ninja laughed at his friend. For a few more minutes he watched until she seemingly had the whole thing memorized. She wasn't making mistakes, having any blips, she seemed to be fine. Eventually, he found that her movements were more fluid and relaxed, her demeanor calmer than it usually was. She was letting herself go. It was rare to see her feeling chilled out. Even when she was having fun and hanging out with friends she didn't seem as relaxed as she was at that moment. The last time he'd seen her like this was when he'd woken up in the night and went to get a drink, and found her and his mom on the sofa. They had been talking, Koko cuddling her like she was her own daughter and Mei clinging to her like she was her birth mother. That was quite some time ago now, but Lloyd recalled the look on her face. It made him happy that she was calm. He'd snuck back to his room, not wanting to ruin the moment.
"I think you've got the hang of it now." The brunette stopped.
"Really?"
"Yeah. Wanna keep doing it, or head back home?" She didn't say a word, instead grabbing his arms and pulling him closer. She then latched onto his body and moved him to the right of her. Her hands moved back to the start position and she took a deep breath, closing her eyes and starting Spinjitzu all over again. The boy didn't say anything back either, he simply copied her and the two were in sync.
Life came flowing back into his veins, the feeling overtaking his systems yet again and making him feel at peace with everything. Nothing mattered. Nothing at all. This time he also felt a strong source of life coming from beside him, it was strong and more powerful than it had been before. It felt great, knowing that that was his friend, and that for the first time in a while, she was doing okay.
She was genuinely okay.

Travelers come here to enjoy the famous red rocks.
Hundreds of hiking trails and Jeep tours will lead you to some fantastic vistas, while a trip to Red Rock State Park will fully immerse you in crimson. But there is more to Sedona than to geology; Enjoy the history of the town by visiting the Palatki Heritage. And for a glimpse of the area's New Age culture, stop in at one of the many crystal-toting shops or art galleries at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village (many of these stores also provide maps for notorious whirlwinds).
[toc]
1. Hiking Trails
The area boasts more than 100 different trails, each offering its own unique experience. Most lead into the red rocks, giving brave explorers valuable photos of postcards. Visitors are fascinated with the many Sedona trails, but the most popular one is the Cathedral Rock Trail, which starts about 4 miles south of the "Y" intersection.
Although this is not the easiest trip, this road offers a great view of one of Sedona's most notable red rock formations. Recent visitors said the effort is definitely worth the point. For a less strenuous journey that still promises Cathedral Rock, try Airport Mesa Loop, an easy route near Sedona Airport.
Other common hiking trails include Bell Rock Road, Devil's Bridge, Boynton Gorge, and Palatki Ruins, home to a number of ancient Native American relics and cave paintings.
2. Jeep Tours
If your feet need a break from all hiking, but you don't have the stunning views of Sedona yet, book a jeep tour. A popular activity for Sedona visitors, these tours are usually led by a guide and vary by theme or activity level.
For example, the Ancient Ruins Tour offered by Pink Jeep Tours is very popular for history lovers because it visits a Honanki Heritage site, among other highlights. Meanwhile, the Soldiers Pass Trail offered by Red Rock Western Jeep Tours is a hit with those looking for a break from the crowds as it traverses a trail rarely used by other commercial groups.
If you want to get behind the wheel yourself, some companies, such as Barlow Adventures, allow you to rent a jeep and explore the surrounding red rocks independently (with some driving tips and maps). The trail is provided before driving).
3. The Vortexes
Sedona visitors often hear about tornadoes - energy vortices coming directly from the earth that can be felt by those present. These tornadoes are represented by unique rock formations thought to generate energy.
Although all Sedona is thought to be a whirlwind, there are four main cyclones in the city, each emitting its own energy. The vortices are classified as "feminine" (energy entering the earth) or "masculine" (energy leaving the earth).
The Airport Vortex, along Route 89A just west of the intersection of routes 89A and 179 (the "Y") is said to produce masculine energy, strengthening one's self-confidence and motivation.
Meanwhile, Rock Rock Cathedral near Red Rock State Park promotes feminine aspects such as kindness, patience, and compassion. Boynton Canyon Vortex, northwest of the "Y" along Dry Creek Road, offers a balance between masculine and feminine energy.
And Bell Rock Vortex, south of "Y" along Route 179, offers a combination of all three: masculine, feminine and balanced. Many recent visitors cannot speak enough about the beauty of Bell Rock, but there are also many smaller, more subtle whirlpools found throughout the area.
4. Red Rock Scenic Byway
The 7.5-mile-long Red Rock View Road, starting after you exit the road off Interstate 17, has a lot to see and do. In fact, it's often referred to as a "museum without walls." Highlights include sightseeing, hiking, biking and even golfing.
There are also two tornadoes to check out, Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock in the Village of Oak Creek (also known as the Big Park). The village also includes restaurants, galleries, and other shops to visit. Coconino National Forest is another popular stop, with many stunning views.
You can stop by the Red Rock District Visitor Center to select a map and get advice on trails and other activities in the area. Recent byway visitors gush about how beautiful the scenery is and can't recommend it enough.
Others warn that you may get distracted by the gorgeous scenery, so plan to make use of the many lookout points to safely admire the byway.
5. Chapel of the Holy Cross
If you only have time for a cultural venue, the Chapel of the Cross will be it. This magnificent church was designed by Marguerite Brunswig Staude who was a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) in the 1950s, protrudes from the red cliff less than 4 miles south of " Y "Sedona's intersection.
The main stained glass window is held by a huge cross and overlooks the Verde Valley. While many visitors have recently been raving about breathtaking views, most say the site's peaceful atmosphere is the central reason to stop.
Reviewers also warned of limited parking and heavy midday crowds - plan a morning visit for a quieter experience. Others say that it makes a nice stop along the Red Rock Scenic Byway (the chapel is located at the northern end of the highway).
6. Red Rock State Park
Although Sedona is surrounded by towering red rock formations, many recent visitors recommend a trip to the official Red Rock State Park specifically to see Cathedral Rock – one of Arizona's most famous landmarks.
This 286-acre nature preserve – located about 10 miles southwest of the "Y" (the intersection of routes 89A and 179) along Oak Creek – boasts great views of Sedona's more famous formations.
The park offers a 5-mile trail network that is composed of interconnecting looped trails. The Eagle's Nest Loop leads to the highest point in the park with an elevation gain of 300 feet. Stop in at the visitor center to learn about the area's history, guided nature walks, and moonlit hikes.
Reviewers raved about the natural beauty of the park and many go as far as saying it is their favorite place in all of Sedona. The park is famous for people of all ages because hiking trails vary in difficulty and length; It even offers Junior Ranger for children aged 6 to 12 years old.
7. Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village
When you need to take a break on the trails, exchange those hiking shoes for something more appealing and head to the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village (pronounced Tel-AH-ki-PAH- ki).
Located at the intersection of 89A and 179 routes, this sizable outdoor shopping mall is designed in the style of a traditional Mexican village. The complex was built on a former sycamore forest and is specially cared for to maintain existing trees.
As a result, many structures of the village were built around theaters, paving the way for interesting architecture and forgiving shade. The stucco walls include a lot of art galleries. New Age stores sell modern art and glassware, and restaurants, while cobblestone streets and mosaic fountains bring a gourd. ancient atmosphere charm.
Many tourists recommend spending a few hours surfing the Tlaquepaque and checking out local handmade jewelry, food, music, and especially art. Though many felt the wares sold here were too high-priced, reviewers still suggested a visit for the restaurants and architecture.
8. Verde Valley Wine Trail
When it comes to the land of wine, Arizona often doesn't come to mind. But the Verde Valley near Sedona provides a dry climate and access to water where grapes need to thrive. If you are a vino fan, consider taking a day to follow the Verde Valley Wine Trail;
This self-guided tour takes you to some of the area's most famous wineries, including Alcantara Vineyard, Trang Springs Wine Cellar, Oak Creek Vineyard, and Javelina Leap Vineyard, as well as several rooms. taste. Most stops allow you to tour the grounds and sample locally made wine.
Recent followers have praised the vineyards for their beautiful atmosphere and varied choices. You can download a passport on the trail's website, which once you get it stamped, allows you to earn special offers and prizes.
9. Sedona Spas
It should come as no surprise that this city of spiritual healing has no shortage of spas. You'll find basic massages and salt scrubs, but many Sedona spas also add some local accents to their treatments.
For example, Mii Amo Spa at Enchantment Resort offers a special package infused with Sedona clay, along with Native American-inspired therapies. For a New Age experience, A Spa For You helps balance your chakra by introducing polarizing gemstones to its deep-tissue massages.
Sedona's recent travelers have also proposed Sedona's New Day Spa and Inner Journey because of the soothing atmosphere and various treatments. Customers claim to have left feeling nothing short of relaxed and rejuvenated.
Before deciding on your treatment, you should note that some resort spas only offer treatments for hotel guests, so it's a good idea to call ahead and check. Hours and prices vary depending on the facility and the desired treatment. For more information, visit the spa page of the Sedona Tourism Board website.
10. Palatki Heritage Site
For a glimpse of what life was like in the red rocks between A.D. 1150 and 1350, drive to the Palatki Heritage. These ancient cliff houses were once home to the Hopi tribe and are now one of the largest cave houses in the area.
The hieroglyphs that cover the walls of the site impress many visitors. Recent visitors also praised the information staff and enthusiasm. There are three hiking trails at Palatki Heritage Area - one that takes you directly to houses on Sinagua cliffs, one that leads you to a view of the housing and another to hieroglyphs.
Each of these roads is about 1/4 of a way in size and are all recommended by travelers.

10 Keys to Well-Being (Plus Motivational Quotes)
The very interesting Greater Good Science Center at UC-Berkeley has some assertive and scientifically-based ideas on wonderful topics such as well-being, fulfillment, meaning, happiness, flourishing, etc. Along with U-Penn’s Positive Psychology master’s program, these are two powerhouse schools that take the science of optimism, happiness, flourishing, and well-being seriously. It’s neat to see, since at times in the past, topics such as these, or “psi“, or values and virtues such as meaning, goodness, love, and wisdom were not considered suitable subjects for psychological science to research and investigate. In this blog, I discuss ten keys the GGSC, positive psychology, and I suggest for greater fulfillment, joy, contentment, and success.
Altruism
“Altruism is when we act to promote someone else’s welfare, even at a risk or cost to ourselves. Though some believe that humans are fundamentally self-interested, recent research suggests otherwise: Studies have found that people’s first impulse is to cooperate rather than compete; that toddlers spontaneously help people in need out of a genuine concern for their welfare; and that even non-human primates display altruism,” according to the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC). Altruism is one of the “values of the wise” — values that inspire and attract wise persons (for example, wisdom vs. foolhardiness, and truth vs. wishful thinking). I pair it with kindness and magnanimity, creating a mighty triumvirate of loving instinct.
A few quotations about altruistic behavior, self-sacrifice, love, and goodness:
“If you truly want to live up to the ideals our forefathers had in mind, if you sincerely care to embody the spirit of Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed, stop hating and start loving. Love even when you don’t really feel it, even when you think you’re faking it. Soon, you won’t be faking it anymore, and you’ll be a better parent, a better friend, a better American, a better person.” ~ Alan Colmes
“Brotherhood is the very price and condition of man’s survival.” ~ Carlos P. Romulo
“There is no greater satisfaction for a just and well-meaning person than the knowledge that he has devoted his best energies to the service of the good cause.” ~ Albert Einstein
“The lover of mankind strengthens men, for he himself wishes to be strengthened; he helps men toward success, for he himself wishes to achieve success.” ~ Confucius
Awe
“Awe is the feeling we get in the presence of something vast that challenges our understanding of the world, like looking up at millions of stars in the night sky or marveling at the birth of a child. When people feel awe, they may use other words to describe the experience, such as wonder, amazement, surprise, or transcendence.
The most common sources of awe are other people and nature, but awe can be elicited by many other experiences as well, such as music, art or architecture, religious experiences, the supernatural, or even one’s own accomplishments,” the GGSC notes. I think of it as wonder; as vision; as radical creative thinking. Mindfulness and gratitude are aligned with seeing the world with awe. These special experiences fire our synapses and engender a greater sense of well-being.
A few quotations about Awe:
“The real voyage of discovery consists of not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” ~ Marcel Proust
“Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful, for beauty is God’s handwriting — a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” ~ William Butler Yeats
Find the Good Side of Things, People & Changes
Ever heard an old person either say “Kids today!” or “Damn liberals!” or hear a young person absolutely demonize or denigrate an individual with whom they don’t agree (or, as in Dana Carvey’s impression of “grumpy old man“, just be sour and mad at the world)?
As can be gleaned from this Q&A with the engaging researcher Robert Sapolsky, political differences is a major issue nowadays — much more so than in the past. It divides us in homes, in communities, and in the United States. Add money to the mix and it’s political gamesmanship and subterfuge writ large.
But seeing differences between the self and the other is often not healthy. Tribalism, Sapolsky notes, is oh-so-easy. He says: “The easiest symbols that we grab on to in deciding if someone is an “us” or a “them” are visceral ones. Being disgusted by someone’s personal behavior—the way “they” do stuff—is a much easier entrée to hating them than disagreeing with their views on the trade deficit. Primates are hard-wired for us/them dichotomies. Our brains detect them in less than 100 milliseconds. Our views about things are driven by implicit (unconscious) processes.”
Gosh, that leaves one with a negative feeling. As Sapolsky puts it: “It’s depressing as hell.” That it is.
Here are some quotations to increase well-being by seeing commonalities, others’ perspectives, and being forgiving and humble – basically, optimism and positive thinking before judging:
“We spend so much time talking and judging what we think we know. . . We need to ask more questions and spend more time listening. Really listening, not just waiting for our turn to talk or be thinking the whole time how we are right and they are wrong. We also need to shift our mindset and see things from other people’s perspectives. Really appreciate and respect their perspective, not just be thinking how our’s is morally superior. We need to give more than we get in all interactions with others. Live to serve and to help make a difference in other’s lives. In short, leave this life better than we found it.” ~ Robert L. Lloyd
“All too often, visions of virtue or decency have been invoked to brand as immoral and dangerous anyone who is different. Such aggressive moral dogmatism — which, it is worth stressing, can occur on both the political right and left — is one of the greatest enemies of human dignity.” ~ Elizabeth Kiss
“Judging others takes a great deal of energy and, without exception, pulls you away from where you want to be.” ~ Richard Carlson
Mindfulness
The GGSC has this to say about this slightly-elusive value: “Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens.
Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them—without believing, for instance, that there’s a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to think or feel in a given moment. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.”
Once you get your head around it, practices that lead to greater mindfulness — including but not limited to meditation — you can benefit from the positive effects on the human brain. Here is what my old friend Laurent Grenier, an author who found some interesting ways of dealing with his quadrapalegia, counsels:
“If you lead a happy life, of which you may be to some degree unmindful, never let a day pass without reflecting on the life of misery you could be leading instead. Imagine having lost everything and everyone you love. You will be happier for the realization that you are spared this misery.” Hard to do, but good advice. A good movie can help, I think.
Here are some quotes on this fascinating skill that will surely lead to greater relaxation, health, and well-being (and who knows, perhaps happiness and success):
“Practicing mindfulness over time reveals and develops the qualities of wisdom and compassion, the twin virtues of the discipline. Wisdom means seeing clearly into the fundamental nature of reality. Through meditative practice, we can deeply recognize the eternal arising and passing away of all phenomena and see the unsatisfactory quality of ordinary human experience that derives from the illusion of the self as an entity separate from the rest of reality.” ~ Mark W. Muesse
“Each moment of the year has its own beauty, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Research has suggested that in a few short weeks, mindfulness meditation practice can bring about physiological, psychological, and social benefits in our lives. From increases in gray matter in the brain to alleviating physical ailments such as migraines and fibromyalgia, the benefits of mindfulness and meditation practice more generally have been touted for everyone ranging from executives to schoolchildren.” ~ Hooria Jazaieri
Compassion
Next among values and phenomena that can lead to more well-being in the lives of aware individuals is this “suffering together.” Compassion is a deep empathy, a lovingness, a true caring. “While empathy refers more generally to our ability to take the perspective of and feel the emotions of another person, compassion is when those feelings and thoughts include the desire to help. Altruism, in turn, is the kind, selfless behavior often prompted by feelings of compassion, though one can feel compassion without acting on it, and altruism isn’t always motivated by compassion,” the GGSC points out.
As usual, when trying to figure out exactly what a particular value or virtue really means, I look to a wide array of diverse quotations to elucidate the concept. That is what Values of the Wise is all about.
Quotations about compassion:
“With compassion, we see benevolently our own human condition and the condition of our fellow beings. We drop prejudice. We withhold judgment.” ~ Christina Baldwin
“The Good Samaritan story illustrates altruism. Filled with compassion, he is motivated to give a stranger time, energy, and money while expecting neither repayment nor appreciation.” ~ David G. Myers and Jean M. Twenge
“We humans have the capacity to change the world with acts of love and kindness. Let’s start by teaching our children the importance of compassion.” ~ Goldie Hawn
Industriousness
A Buddhist proverb counsels, “If we are facing the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.” You may have also heard the oft-quoted, “Idle hands [or an idle mind] are the devil’s workshop.” If you’ve ever watched/read “Little House on the Prairie,” you know how deeply-ingrained hard work, discipline, industriousness, and persistence are in the American ethos. We work too hard now, considering how much of a cut of the profit workers receive, and considering that famous economist John Kenneth Galbraith predicted in the 1940s or 1950s that by 2000, we should be working less than twenty hours a week due to the awesome increase in technological capacity.
Well, a short workweek may not have come to pass, and America may be one of the hardest-working, most sober/religious of nations, but it still is a virtue — and one that can lead to well-being, contentment, and prosperity. Once one gets to about $75,000, happiness levels out, but up to that point, it is hard to be happy in the modern world if one is deprived, poor, or otherwise harried.
Industry vs. inferiority is a key milestone in human psychological development according to prominent developmental psychologist, Erik Erikson. As Lumenlearning.com points out, “During the elementary school stage (ages 6–12), children face the task of industry vs. inferiority. Children begin to compare themselves with their peers to see how they measure up. They either develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in their schoolwork, sports, social activities, and family life, or they feel inferior and inadequate because they feel that they don’t measure up. If children do not learn to get along with others or have negative experiences at home or with peers, an inferiority complex might develop into adolescence and adulthood.”
My sister is exemplary of effort and striving. She is actively a daughter, wife, mother of three, business owner, and reads and shares information passionately. She really gets a charge out of this lifestyle, and productivity is the result. I admire someone who finds one or more avocations and pursues them indefatigably — even in the absence of pay or a mandate. Indeed, as the quintessentially-American proverb has it, “People may get more tired by standing still than going on.”
Here are a few quotations about industriousness, effort, productivity, and dedication:
“Americans have shifted away from an energetic, purpose-driven, higher-order pursuit of value, and are instead moving toward security, insulationism, materialism and minimum-commitment thinking. Rather than building upon our history of sacrificial innovation and difficult labor, regardless of immediate or tangible personal benefits, many Americans are seizing our economic prosperity as an opportunity to slack off and opt for personal leisure, [and] short-sighted consumerism….” ~ Joseph Sunde
“Work saves us from three great evils: boredom, vice, and need.”~ Voltaire
“No ethic is as ethical as the work ethic.” ~ John Kenneth Galbraith
Empathy
Yet another key to well-being is empathy. The GGSC indicates that “[e]mpathy seems to have deep roots in our brains and bodies, and in our evolutionary history. Elementary forms of empathy have been observed in our primate relatives, in dogs, and even in rats. Empathy has been associated with two different pathways in the brain, and scientists have speculated that some aspects of empathy can be traced to mirror neurons, cells in the brain that fire when we observe someone else perform an action in much the same way that they would fire if we performed that action ourselves.”
Take David Brooks’ advice and don’t confuse empathy with rationality: “People without social emotions like empathy are not objective decision-makers. They are sociopaths who sometimes end up on death row.”
Here are three unique perspectives on empathy from three disparate individuals:
“Don’t judge anyone harshly until you have been through his experiences.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“To separate egoistic distress reduction from empathy-based altruism, Daniel Batson’s research group conducted studies that aroused empathy. Then the researchers noted whether the aroused people would reduce their own distress by escaping the situation or whether they would go out of their way to aid the person. The results were consistent: with their empathy aroused, people usually helped.” ~ David G. Myers and Jean M. Twenge
“Wealthy Christians talk about the poor but have no friends who are poor. So they merely speculate on the reasons for their condition, often placing the blame on the poor themselves.” ~ Jim Wallis
Forgiveness
This beautiful and difficult virtue is one of humanity’s highest levels of achievement. Well-being is inextricably tied to the emotional grudges one holds, I’m afraid (I say that because I feel justice more easily than I feel forgiveness). But, it’s true. It’s tied to psychological well-being, heart health, and optimism. In fact, hostility and it’s ugly little brother cortisol is/are one of the main psychological predictors of heart disease!
Berkeley’s GGSC has this to say: “Psychologists generally define forgiveness as a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness. Just as important as defining what forgiveness is, though, is understanding what forgiveness is not. Experts who study or teach forgiveness make clear that when you forgive, you do not gloss over or deny the seriousness of an offense against you.”
Alan Scott puts this virtue in this light: “I think there is a human condition where many people assume that if we forgive others for the wrongs they do to us (or those close to us) that we are, in a sense, letting them off the hook when perhaps they should be punished. The offender gets to go on their merry way through life, while we are still suffering because of their actions. I almost felt like if I forgave someone, then I was condoning the wrong that they did! Not so. Forgiveness is a necessity for us, not vengeance. God is the true judge, not us.”
I may not see it as a God thing, but I do see the psychological research point to the benefits of forgiveness when it comes to mental health and a flourishing life.
“You hold too much anger inside. It poisons you. Do you want to carry so much pain into your next life? …You must forgive. You must let go of your pain. You must let go of your anger.” Those are the wise words of the Chinese healer who tries to get Michael Keaton’s knotted-up and angry guy character to relax before his cancer kills him. It’s a fascinating scene in a fascinating movie called My Life.
Here are some quotations about forgiveness as a virtue:
“The greater you are, the more you must practice humility.” ~ Ben Sira
“So many of us hold on to little resentments that may have stemmed from an argument, a misunderstanding, the way we were raised, or some other painful event. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us — believing that this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship.” ~ Richard Carlson
If one by one we counted people out
For the least sin, it wouldn’t take us long
To get so we had no one left to live with.
For to be social is to be forgiving. ~ Robert Frost
Generosity
If there is one important thing my mom has taught me through deed and words, it is generosity. She gives, gives, gives. This doesn’t mean that she is a saint, but it does mean that she gets a great feeling from what she perceives as one of her true callings: to make a positive difference in others, in society, and in the world. She puts her money where her mouth is, as it were. I have seen a very compelling correlation in her between happiness and generosity. It’s a thing:
As Amanda L. Chan points out in this article, “Giving of yourself — whether it be your time, energy or money — isn’t just a boon to those you’re helping. A wealth of research shows that generosity can also have benefits for the giver, ranging from a better outlook at your job, to more years of life.” So give of yourself — your time, your money, your energy, your advice. Mentorship, volunteering, and charity are true ways to greater happiness, well-being, and meaning in life.
Don’t feel bad if you get a charge out of helping others and giving of yourself. That is how the brain evolved — we find certain things rewarding, such as food, sex, competition, and helping behavior. Feel good if you help another person; you deserve it! You could have ignored their need. The warm glow of givingness is something to cherish, not spurn.
Three other succinct quotes about generosity:
“One act of beneficence, one act of real usefulness, is worth all the abstract sentiment in the world.” ~ Ann Radcliffe
“I’ve never known any human being, high or humble, who ever regretted, when nearing life’s end, having done kindly deeds. But I have known more than one millionaire who became haunted by the realization that they had led selfish lives.” ~ B. C. Forbes
“To do good without ulterior motive is a generous and almost divine thing in itself.” ~ Francesco Guicciardini
Social Integration
Last, but certainly not least, social integration. Social interaction, social relatedness, inclusion, relationships – whatever you want to call it. It’s good. I should know; I have been terribly lonely and felt like a bit of an odd bird in some significant periods of my life. For a while there, I was on Prozac, living alone, doing my thesis on suicide, smoking marijuana, and wondering if life was worth living. Needless to say, I saw more of my therapist than I did women on dates. I just wasn’t in the zone, and my mental issues led to my social isolation, and my social isolation fed my mental issues. I sort of felt inferior to others; unliked; and yet superior to most others. It was quite a quandary.
Science is clear on this topic: human beings are social creatures, and though we do need some individuality and alone time, the feeling that we are alone, different, unworthy is only pernicious. It can lead to suicide, substance abuse, studying philosophy (!), and depression. Anomie is a unique version of this that has been described for some time in sociology. Yes, pets are good and helpful!
Yes, I am now married and even recently bit the bullet and started attending the local Unitarian Church! I have pets I am very fond of, I write every day, take classes, and exercise and fish oil!
On this page, Juliana Breines asks whether some social ties are better than others when it comes to contributing to well-being. She writes: “There’s no question that the digital age has changed the way we relate to one another, sometimes to our detriment, as MIT psychologist Sherry Turkle has argued in her book Alone Together. Though many of us can count Facebook friends into the thousands, research suggests that loneliness is rampant in the United States—we have fewer close friends than we did a generation ago—and takes a severe toll on our health.”
Here are some quotes about social connectedness as related to well-being. The Wisdom Archive holds other quotes about social relatedness, integration, affiliation, and connectedness, and is searchable for free.
“To the extent that we can characterize evolution as designing our modern brains, this is what our brains were wired for: reaching out to and interacting with others.” ~ Matthew Lieberman
“Social situations do profoundly influence individuals. But individuals also influence social situations. The two interact. Asking whether external situations or inner dispositions determine behavior is like asking whether length or width determine a room’s area.” ~ David G. Meyers and Jean M. Twenge
“Humans are a profoundly social species; our drive to connect with others is embedded in our biology and evolutionary history. It begins at birth, in our relationship with our caregiver—and the effects of this relationship seem to reverberate throughout our lives. When we’re cared for as children, we’re more likely to have healthy, secure attachments as we get older.” (the Greater Good Science Center)
I wish well-being, peace, and happiness for you. I will leave you with these:
I believe in courtesy, in kindness, in generosity, in good cheer, in friendship and in honest competition. I believe there is something doing somewhere, for every man ready to do it. I believe I’m ready, RIGHT NOW. ~ Elbert Hubbard
The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter. ~ Mark Twain
Optimism has an important place in some, thought not all, realms of your life. It is not a panacea. But it can protect you against depression; it can raise your level of achievement; it can enhance your physical well-being; it is a far more pleasant mental state to be in. ~ Martin E. P. Seligman

Meet Your 2022 NBA Champions, the Philadelphia 76ers
For our 2017-18 NBA Season Preview, we're doing deep dives on five teams who can beat the Warriors in the next five years—and the players who can push them over the top.
Thanks to Dario Saric, coffee dates are now a game-day ritual among several members of the Philadelphia 76ers. The relatively overlooked sophomore initiated the custom during his rookie season as a way to learn about his new teammates, stay comfortable in a foreign land, and, most importantly, relax.
The 23-year-old was mystified when he first saw to-go cups, a symbol of the behavioral chasm that exists between the United States and Europe. "In Croatia, we have special bars for coffee. We sit there for three, four hours, read the newspaper, talk with each other," Saric tells VICE Sports. "It's not like here where you take your coffee and continue to do your work."
So they'll sit for 45 minutes or an hour and chat about life, women, NBA gossip, and general basketball matters. The American players debate the NFL while soccer is a topic of discussion among those who grew up in other parts of the world. Saric will tease Sixers point guard T.J. McConnell for downing lattes (American milk shakes) instead of a strong cappuccino. Joel Embiid often tags along, more in search of conversation than caffeine.
These excursions won't lead the Sixers to the playoffs, boost their collective three-point percentage, or formulate a scheme that'll eventually help them reign over the NBA. But for a young core that's endured unprecedented failure and numerous setbacks over the past few years, simply setting aside time to have positive bonding experiences may have unquantifiable long-term implications.
"It's one part of growing up in this process," Saric says. "Everything is easier on the court because of that."
On the floor, few players in the NBA possess Saric's size, intelligence, skill, and maniacal work ethi—not just a product of all the cappuccinos. The Sixers have, at times, semi-seriously banned him from the gym to keep him off his legs.
He entered the NBA last season with over half a decade of professional experience already under his belt, where he racked up numerous EuroLeague accolades. A boy surrounded by men, outplaying them at every turn. Chris Babcock, a player development coach for the Sixers since 2013, remembers flying overseas a few years ago to watch Saric play. They were in Belgrade, competing in an environment that can politely be described as psychotic—particularly if you were born in Croatia.
"I was sitting next to one of our Serbian guys and I had no idea what the fans were saying," Babcock says. "He goes 'You don't want to know, but it's not nice to Dario.' The kid was incredibly tough. They lost the game but he played so hard; didn't get distracted by everything that was going on."
On an injury-plagued team that was essentially trying to lose as many games as it could, Saric's initial adjustment to the NBA was bitter. He came over just a few weeks before training camp started and had very little time to get mentally or physically accustomed to the best players in the world. He struggled to finish around the basket, couldn't knock down threes, and was inconsistent when switching onto smaller guards on defense.
It was a chaotic, exhausting experience. Saric's legs weren't there, and his teammates didn't have enough talent and/or experience to lift some of the responsibility that eventually sagged on his shoulders. Saric recorded one of the 50 highest usage percentages in league history among rookies who played at least 2000 minutes (same as Kristaps Porzingis; higher than Karl Malone, Stephon Marbury, and Damian Lillard), and came around to win Rookie of the Month in February and March, when he averaged 18.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game.
Before the All-Star break, he shot a putrid 52 percent in the restricted area. "Unfortunately, he had to learn through playing," Babcock says. "But really that ended up turning into a strength of his. He got better at quick-ups, pivoting, finishing around the rim both through drives and through his post game."
After the All-Star break, when he became a full-time starter, Saric's field goal percentage in the restricted area jumped up to a far more respectable 60.3 percent, but he still struggled beyond the arc. His three-point percentage sunk below 30 percent, even though most attempts were uncontested and off the catch. Still, there are several reasons to believe this weakness can be corrected.
"It seems like a small distance, but the change from the international three to the NBA three is a pretty hard adjustment, especially in a short amount of time," Babcock says. "He has a good looking shot."
For the most part, the team hasn't tinkered with Saric's form—though they'd still like him to shorten how far he brings the ball back and focus on keeping his arc high—so much as they've instructed him to familiarize himself with the extended distance. It was his primary concern over the summer.
These fans get it. Photo: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports.
Saric will enter his second NBA season in a dramatically different role, and with a useful influx of talent and knowledge around him. If they are healthy, Embiid and Ben Simmons will be Philadelphia's two highest usage options, creating better looks for Saric than he had for most of last year. J.J. Redick can space the floor and Amir Johnson can anchor a bench unit. Rookie guard Markelle Fultz knows how to put the ball in the basket in countless ways. Saric won't be asked to make plays as a primary option. His looks will be more choreographed than random, and a higher percentage of his outside shots will likely come from the corner. His usage will shrink, his efficiency will rise.
But even if Saric makes noticeable strides in year two, Philadelphia isn't even promised a playoff spot, let alone championship contention. Cracking the league's upper crust is more of a long term goal. But if it happens, and Saric is able to transform into an exemplary complement to Simmons and Embiid, the 76ers could ultimately string together a dynastic run of their own, as pioneers of the NBA's next frontier—staying versatile without forfeiting size.
As teams all across the NBA hoard athletic wings who can shoot, defend, and maybe do a little something creative off the bounce, the Sixers are quietly defying convention. Simmons, Saric, and Embiid are all at least 6'10", and each channels several precious qualities that are unusual in players that size. If they can manage to stay on the court without constricting each other's space, and remain stout on the defensive end, the NBA will have never seen a trio quite like it before.
"Embiid can be one of the best guys in the NBA," Saric says. "And for me it's easier when I have Ben, who can share the ball, who can pass [to] me outside for my three pointers. Who can feed me in the low post. With Joel, I can play pick-and-roll. I can pop and he can roll. I can roll and he can pop. There are so many options in the game and I hope I can be an important part. They make it easier to play."
If all goes according to plan, Philly's collective ceiling is a contemporary iteration of the 1986 Boston Celtics, with a gigantic frontcourt that intuitively understands how valuable the pass that leads to an assist truly is. Nobody could stop that, including the Warriors. Unleashing three legitimate post presences that can function simultaneously without stepping on each other's toes? Who force double teams, shoot threes, and guard multiple positions?
Instead of trying to conquer Golden State by using its playing style against them, the Sixers could stay extremely large and subdue them with a contrasting strategy. They could bully them in a slower environment, exert control on the boards, and not feel any pressure to downsize thanks to the rare skill-sets found in their bigs.
Saric epitomizes the advantage. He's a walking mismatch in those jumbo lineups and as a small-ball five. For example, picture him at center, operating in space, with Robert Covington as a stretch four. (According to NBAWowy, last year those lineups outscored opponents by nearly 24 points per 100 possessions in 38 minutes.)
Of course, for it all to work, Saric's aforementioned three-point shot must rise to a respectable level. He has to cut out his sloppy turnovers and become more of an impact defender, particularly on the perimeter.
According to Synergy Sports, Saric allowed opponents to score 1.45 points per possession whenever he switched screens. That number is abysmal—nearly twice as poor as Tristan Thompson, Draymond Green, and Blake Griffin—and ranked dead last among all players who logged at least 25 such possessions.
"He was thrown into our league really quickly without much prep, so as much of it is a physical thing, he's spent a lot of time with our defensive coach Lloyd Pierce, learning different angles, keeping a hand up against guards that can shoot," Babcock says. "We feel that he can guard multiple positions. He did it last year a little bit inconsistently, but he moves his feet well, he's strong and he's smart. With more experience, I think he'll just keep getting better and better."
The Sixers aren't discouraged by any issues Saric had on defense last year, in part because they allowed just 98.7 points per 100 possessions whenever he shared the floor with Embiid, who's essentially a parachute for teammates on the defensive end.
"Sometimes I can try to steal the ball and know I have Joel behind me," Saric says. "And know he can block the shots easy."
Keeping Embiid, Simmons, Fultz, and Saric together for the next five years won't be easy. The 2021-22 season would be the first of Fultz's second contract and the fourth of Embiid's max deal. Saric, Simmons, and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot are all extension eligible heading into 2020-21, and the former two could potentially command max deals. (Covington should also be on the books earning significant money.)
Philadelphia has its own first-round pick in the 2018 draft, plus the Los Angeles Lakers selection so long as it doesn't land second, third, fourth, or fifth. These picks will not be cheap. There are worse problems to have, but the Sixers could find themselves making some very difficult financial decisions down the line.
But if they let this core grow together, over coffee and on the court, and use the next few seasons to study the various ways they can play on both ends when Saric shares the floor with Embiid and Simmons, it'll be a revolutionary collection of talent—one that an aging Golden State Warriors squad would struggle to slow down.

Meet Your 2022 NBA Champions, the Philadelphia 76ers

For the most part, the team hasn’t tinkered with Saric’s form—though they’d still like him to shorten how far he brings the ball back and focus on keeping his arc high—so much as they’ve instructed him to familiarize himself with the extended distance. It was his primary concern over the summer.

Saric will enter his second NBA season in a dramatically different role, and with a useful influx of talent and knowledge around him. If they are healthy, Embiid and Ben Simmons will be Philadelphia’s two highest usage options, creating better looks for Saric than he had for most of last year. J.J. Redick can space the floor and Amir Johnson can anchor a bench unit. Rookie guard Markelle Fultz knows how to put the ball in the basket in countless ways. Saric won’t be asked to make plays as a primary option. His looks will be more choreographed than random, and a higher percentage of his outside shots will likely come from the corner. His usage will shrink, his efficiency will rise.
But even if Saric makes noticeable strides in year two, Philadelphia isn’t even promised a playoff spot, let alone championship contention. Cracking the league’s upper crust is more of a long term goal. But if it happens, and Saric is able to transform into an exemplary complement to Simmons and Embiid, the 76ers could ultimately string together a dynastic run of their own, as pioneers of the NBA’s next frontier—staying versatile without forfeiting size.
As teams all across the NBA hoard athletic wings who can shoot, defend, and maybe do a little something creative off the bounce, the Sixers are quietly defying convention. Simmons, Saric, and Embiid are all at least 6’10”, and each channels several precious qualities that are unusual in players that size. If they can manage to stay on the court without constricting each other’s space, and remain stout on the defensive end, the NBA will have never seen a trio quite like it before.
“Embiid can be one of the best guys in the NBA,” Saric says. “And for me it’s easier when I have Ben, who can share the ball, who can pass [to] me outside for my three pointers. Who can feed me in the low post. With Joel, I can play pick-and-roll. I can pop and he can roll. I can roll and he can pop. There are so many options in the game and I hope I can be an important part. They make it easier to play.”
If all goes according to plan, Philly’s collective ceiling is a contemporary iteration of the 1986 Boston Celtics, with a gigantic frontcourt that intuitively understands how valuable the pass that leads to an assist truly is. Nobody could stop that, including the Warriors. Unleashing three legitimate post presences that can function simultaneously without stepping on each other’s toes? Who force double teams, shoot threes, and guard multiple positions?
Instead of trying to conquer Golden State by using its playing style against them, the Sixers could stay extremely large and subdue them with a contrasting strategy. They could bully them in a slower environment, exert control on the boards, and not feel any pressure to downsize thanks to the rare skill-sets found in their bigs.
Saric epitomizes the advantage. He’s a walking mismatch in those jumbo lineups and as a small-ball five. For example, picture him at center, operating in space, with Robert Covington as a stretch four. (According to NBAWowy, last year those lineups outscored opponents by nearly 24 points per 100 possessions in 38 minutes.)
Of course, for it all to work, Saric’s aforementioned three-point shot must rise to a respectable level.
“He was thrown into our league really quickly without much prep, so as much of it is a physical thing, he’s spent a lot of time with our defensive coach Lloyd Pierce, learning different angles, keeping a hand up against guards that can shoot,” Babcock says. “We feel that he can guard multiple positions. He did it last year a little bit inconsistently, but he moves his feet well, he’s strong and he’s smart. With more experience, I think he’ll just keep getting better and better.”
The Sixers aren’t discouraged by any issues Saric had on defense last year, in part because they allowed just 98.7 points per 100 possessions whenever he shared the floor with Embiid, who’s essentially a parachute for teammates on the defensive end.
“Sometimes I can try to steal the ball and know I have Joel behind me,” Saric says. “And know he can block the shots easy.”
Keeping Embiid, Simmons, Fultz, and Saric together for the next five years won’t be easy. The 2021-22 season would be the first of Fultz’s second contract and the fourth of Embiid’s max deal. Saric, Simmons, and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot are all extension eligible heading into 2020-21, and the former two could potentially command max deals. (Covington should also be on the books earning significant money.)
Philadelphia has its own first-round pick in the 2018 draft, plus the Los Angeles Lakers selection so long as it doesn’t land second, third, fourth, or fifth. These picks will not be cheap. There are worse problems to have, but the Sixers could find themselves making some very difficult financial decisions down the line.
But if they let this core grow together, over coffee and on the court, and use the next few seasons to study the various ways they can play on both ends when Saric shares the floor with Embiid and Simmons, it’ll be a revolutionary collection of talent—one that an aging Golden State Warriors squad would struggle to slow down.
