She remembered saying that earlier.

Look where you are now.

Running wild, holding her hand as the two of you laugh your hearts out, stumbling and almost greeting the ground with your face as the yells get even more distant with the farther the two of you get.

The two of you skid to a stop, slipping in a narrow alleyway, trying to hush your giggles but it was starting to look futile especially since you would burst out laughing when you saw each other’s faces.

Yuzuha finally takes initiative and drags you to the darkest corner, a hand on your mouth as she bites on her own lip to stop herself from chuckling. She glances over your shoulder to see the group of men pass by.

Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to piss some people off but they had it coming to them when they did things that were laughable.

She waits for a few seconds before pulling away.

You grin at her, hand on hers and she didn’t seem to mind. If anything, she was closer than before, even when she kept you silent.

“I’m glad.”

She looks at you, puzzled.

“You’re smiling again. You feel like the Yuzuha I know again.” You aren’t faking anything.

Her smile drops, brown eyes muddled, as if realizing that she was truly still in the same harsh world and this warmth in her chest was only momentary: was only when she was with you. A temporary happiness.

A glance at her watch and Yuzuha knows that the harsh world is going to get even colder. It’s way past six.

“Yuzu?”

Worried is your gaze and the same happiness also slowly dissipates from your eyes, like a drug losing its effects after a thrilling trip. Yuzuha hates seeing you like this. That sad pleading look you gave her upon realizing that she was leaving again, that she was going to become a different person again.

“I-”

“Do you have to go back to him? To Taiju?”

Yes. Her brother was home. Yuzuha would never leave Hakkai. Never… Not even for you.

“I have to go, Y/n.”

She leaves you there, dazed.
