(Double Vision: repeating the text from my previous post....) 80 cents on the dollar. I am going to be very honest. As a child I never would have believed such inequalities could persist into my adult life, and I must admit that I naïvely believed progress and parity would surely be achieved when I arrived to my professional, young-adult life. It almost seemed so. Perhaps this is because, with one brief exception, I never had a male boss--even my female bosses had female bosses. I fortunately wasn't aware of a glass ceiling. I never felt that anything or any -ism stood in the way of my pursuit of happiness--I now work for myself, my partner and I own a home and are an equal team in raising two sharp minds. I am teaching, as I was taught, that anyone can achieve anything they set their mind to. However, as a parent these last eight years, I have forced myself to review the facts before sharing them with the next generation, and each time I do I am shocked and saddened to find that women still encounter blatant inequality in the workplace. I did my due diligence for this post, as I encourage everyone to do in this current climate of dubious-fact flaunting, and according to the United Nations, the international wage gap will not close for the next 70 years--as in, not even in my life time. These numbers and their cultural and social implications cannot be ignored or denied. This is why I strike today. This is why I reserve my dollar--rather my 80 cents--to spend it on another day. This is why I wear red, a color of energy and action, in solidarity. Because these inequalities should be seen and heard and felt. Because I have never considered myself a member of the fairer sex--just the fair sex will do. ................................... Seeing stars come out at night is rare in a city such as New York where a daily veiled miasma hovers in between us and the sky...perhaps this is why we are so taken with the imagery of celestial forms-?
