Reforms are ballyhooed, but martial law remains.

We think those who sought to spread chaos have taken a lesson from their mistakes. After five years of martial law purportedly imposed to restore order against terrorism and other political violence, some Filipinos are predicting a gradual return to constitutional government, while others warn that such optimism is unjustified. "We are going back to normal," said a high-ranking official in Manila, encapsulating a new mood in the country.

However, Marcos has not yet given up his tyrannical ability to rule by decree. In fact, the President is criticized for keeping martial law in place to maintain his own power in an International Commission of Jurists report on the Philippines that was released last week*. Hundreds of such detainees continue to be held captive despite Marcos' two public statements this year promising to free any captives against whom no charges have been brought.

Even some of the President's most heralded initiatives have turned out to be less significant than first thought. For instance, few of the 1,000 prisoners Marcos has vowed to free are accused of political offenses. Only 17 of the prisoners on the list are political prisoners, according to civil rights investigators; the others are accused of regular crimes. Furthermore, despite Marcos' assurance that prisoner abuse will be severely punished, the Commission of Jurists claims that torture still takes place in Manila's "safe houses," where suspects held before detention centers are housed. As a result, the prisoner release has become, in the words of one dissident churchman, "basically meaningless and hypocritical." Additionally, despite Marcos' assurance that mistreatment of prisoners will be severely punished.

However, supporters of Marcos' actions insist that the Philippines still has a much less oppressive political climate than many other regimes in Asia. One ambassador asserts that it is wrong to classify the Philippines alongside Iran or South Korea as human rights violators, not to mention the majority of communist nations. It's true. It is a high bar for any government, but Marcos himself has stated that "any violation of human rights is one too many that may not be tolerated by the new society."

The New Society:

Once upon a time, in the vibrant town of Montopolis, a new society began to emerge. Within Montopolis, the Jewish community thrived, establishing a synagogue that served as a sanctuary of faith, knowledge, and compassion. Jewish traditions and teachings were embraced by all, fostering an environment of acceptance and appreciation for diversity.

The Indians, with their rich cultural heritage, brought forth their songs, dances, and ancient wisdom. They shared their stories of resilience and spirituality, teaching valuable lessons about harmony with nature and the importance of communal bonds. The residents of Montopolis marveled at the beauty of Indian culture, forging friendships that bridged gaps and overcame prejudice.

The Italians, renowned for their passion and love for life, added a vibrant flair to Montopolis. Their food, art, and music transformed the town into a hub of creativity. Pizzerias became gathering places, where people from all walks of life came together to savor culinary delights and engage in lively conversations.

Amidst this multicultural tapestry, the common white man found a newfound sense of belonging. No longer defined solely by his ethnicity, he discovered that his identity was shaped by his interactions with others. United by a shared vision, the white man alongside his fellow community members worked towards a brighter future for Montopolis.

Theodore Roosevelt's words echoed through the streets of Montopolis, reminding its inhabitants of the importance of kindness, equality, and justice. "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are," became a rallying cry, motivating the townsfolk to uplift one another and make a positive impact on society.

As the years passed, Montopolis became a symbol of hope, proving that unity could overcome any adversity. It stood as a testament to the power of inclusivity and collaboration, inspiring neighboring towns to embrace diversity and build stronger communities.

In Montopolis, the Jews, Indians, Italians, and the common white man forged friendships that transcended backgrounds and created an extraordinary society. They lived by Roosevelt's philosophy, recognizing the strength that lies in coming together, acknowledging differences, and celebrating the shared values that make us all human.

Music Video

I have found one of my favorite songs, “Waiting on the World to Change” by John Mayer, has recently been very applicable to my life recently, now that I left the masses. When I first met Clarisse, I could tell that she was different, creative, and inquisitive. After meeting her, and Faber, I have found myself also waiting on the world to change, just like John Mayer and his friends in this song. Mayer starts his song off with;

“Me and all my friends

We're all misunderstood

They say we stand for nothing and

There's no way we ever could

Now we see everything that's going wrong

With the world and those who lead it” (Mayer). 

I used to be part of the world that I no despise so much. I never understood why people were so attached to their alternative beliefs. For instance, when I was working as a fireman, an old lady refused to leave her books, even though we were about to burn them. I was backing out of the house when,“ Beatty flicked his fingers to spark the kerosene. [I] was too late. [I] gasped” (Bradbury 37). My reaction, of gasping, revealed my surprise that the lady would rather be burned alive than live without her books. This was an important part of my life, which would lead to me finding an interest in books. 

Another interesting part of the song is in the final stanza when Mayer sings;

“One day our generation

Is gonna rule the population

So we keep on waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change” (Mayer). 

Once I gave up my job as a fireman, and found a group of men and women in the forest, I realized these lyrics were very relatable. When Granger was explaining the purpose of their group, a clear connection to these lyrics can be made. Granger said, “‘It’s not pleasant, but then we’re not in control, we’re the odd minority crying in the wilderness. When the war’s over, perhaps we can be some sort of use in the world’” (Bradbury 146). Obviously, Granger plans for the group to one day be the leaders, just like John Mayer, but until then, Granger is planning to wait it out.
